In this special “Flipping the Table” episode of my podcast, “The Restaurant Prosperity Formula,” Jonathan and Brianna Cowan, multi-unit restaurant operators, take control, turning the tables on me for an insightful interview. Here's a glimpse of our conversation, full of takeaways on leadership, persistence, and what it takes to thrive in the restaurant industry. I've known the Cowans for going on 15 years, and I've seen their transformation into prosperity firsthand. They own a 65-seat restaurant and cater around 100 weddings per year, offering a full suite of services from rentals to food to bar service. They're currently building out a 12,000 square foot space with a restaurant on the main level and a wedding venue on the second floor. They're documenting the process on their YouTube channel, Wooden Paddle. They also have a podcast, which they named based on something favorite restaurant coach says, “The Ready Fire Aim Podcast.”

Therapy on the Cutting Edge

In this episode, I interview Carolyn and Phil about their decades of research on couples and the changes they experience after the birth of the first child. They discussed how Carolyn had been an elementary school teacher and was pregnant with their second child when they moved to Berkeley where Phil was starting his new job at the University of California, Berkeley. They discussed how their own life experiences led them to be interested in the effect of having children on the couple's relationship, and created a study where couples joined a group during their third trimester of a first pregnancy, and worked together until their child was four months old. In comparison to the control group, who were not offered the couples group intervention, the couples in the groups maintained their relationship satisfaction, while the couples in the control couples with no intervention experienced a significant decrease in satisfaction, which was also reflected in studies by others that followed. The Cowans then worked with another group of couples from when their first child was making the transition to school, and followed them until the children entered high school at 14-15 years old. They discussed the exercises they used during these inventions, and how it was so significant for these couples to talk with their partners in a safe setting about the key issues in their lives and to hear others' experiences and discover that they were not alone during these difficult times. The first two studies were with nonclinical couples in the community. Later, they received a grant to work with low-income couples who had few resources for support, which was designed to increase fathers' engagement with the mothers and their children. Once again, they found positive results in terms of the quality of the couples' relationships as partners and parents, of parenting that was less harsh, of the children having fewer troubling behaviors, and in many cases, increases in income. Phil and Carolyn explained that the majority of current grant funding is siloed, with separate funding for children, for mothers, and for fathers, and and almost no programs taking a family systems view. They feel that the lack of a systemic perspective misses opportunities to take a broader perspective on family development and to work with parents, non parental caregivers, children, and fathers, which can lead to improved outcomes for parents and children, and be more efficient and cost effective. They referenced a study they are overseeing now that has also included employment support, since this is so integral in family functioning for low-income families. Their intervention work has been replicated in the U.K., Germany, Malta, and most recently in Israel. Philip A. Cowan, Ph.D. and Carolyn Pape Cowan, Ph.D. are clinical psychologists and professors Emeriti at University of California, Berkeley who have conducted three significant longitudinal research studies on couples relationships after the birth of the first child. They have received grants from the National Institute of Mental Health and the California Office of Child Abuse Prevention. Their three projects, the Becoming a Family Project, the Schoolchildren and Families Project, and the Supporting Father Involvement Project, which is an ongoing collaboration with Marsha Kline Pruett, Ph.D., M.S.L. ABPP at Smith College and Yale University, have studied the effects of interventions on the couples relationship, father involvement, child wellbeing and a number of other factors. Their group model for couples is being conducted throughout California, in Connecticut, Alberta Canada, England, and Malta. Carolyn and Phil Cowan received the the Distinguished Contribution to Family Systems Research award from the American Family Therapy Academy (AFTA) and the Best Research Article award, along with Marsha and Kyle Pruett, Ph.D., M.S.L. ABPP and Jessie Wong, Ph.D., from the Men in Families Focus Group of the National Council on Family Relations (NCFR). They are the authors of When Partners Become Parents: The Big Life Change for Couples, and there are “training the trainer” trainings in their Supporting Father Involvement program through Brazelton Touchpoints Center, which is part of the Division of Developmental Medicine at Boston Children's Hospital, a teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School.

In the 1950's, photography was considered a hobby that only White people pursued. It was not a job and it was not something Black folks really considered. Cameras and film were expensive. Education was expensive. And there was rampant racism. Adger Cowans believes that the camera is a tool to do research. That belief has led him to assist Gordon Parks at Life Magazine, become the first Black union photographer in the film industry as well as becoming one of the cofounders of the Kamoinge Collective.

One of my most meaningful episodes yet! This is so important for every first responder or shift worker out there. Assessing yourself in all areas of life is crucial and an important habit to get into… this includes relationships, personally, finically, and your particularly your health.   I talk a lot about the importance of building wealth outside the workplace, but without your health, there is no wealth or true freedom. We are fortunate to have benefits and depending on where you are those coverage’s can vary, so use it and invest in yourself first. I can personally relate to the power of Dr. Cowans work as a naturopathic doctor. To be truthful I didn’t really understand the scope of a Naturopaths work, but I was referred to Dr. Cowan, and now here we are.      After my initial testing, I learned that I was operating and producing only 40% of my capacity and energy levels because my cortisol levels were shot. This was due to many things (which we discuss in our interview). In this episode, I was an open book and shared my test results. It was an eye-opener, but more importantly, I hope it helps others. Dr. Cowan shares that after the thousands of tests his team has done with first responders particularly, my test results were “textbook first responder and shift worker numbers”.   There’s a trend here and it needs to be addressed. Believe it or not, root of most issues start in your gut, and the connection between “gut and the brain”. If neglected, it can lead to, anxiety & stress (which I was experiencing), depression, and even mental health issues.   So go get tested and see where you’re at. Be proactive, not reactive towards your wellness.     Guest Bio   Dr. Cowan ND is a Board-certified Naturopathic Doctor and leading authority and practitioner of high-performance medicine who is most recognized for his work with professional athletes both nationally and internationally. Around Our House: Well, here is a final update on my experiment to ditch my smartphone and convert to a simple cell phone with no data and no apps. It was all going ok enough, I was still communicating with the world, though more slowly and quite cumbersomely. The audio on it was quite terrible, as can be heard on episode 14, where I used my speakerphone to interview Luke Cirillo at Out of Ashes Farm. The camera was horrible and I never used it. I couldn’t figure out how to load music files and listen to them. Texting was functional but slow, and group texting was not an option,  which I realized put me out of the loop on conversations between family and friends both. Those are all the bad things. The best thing about that crappy phone was that it didn’t connect to facebook, instagram or email. I was thankful for that and I am grateful for some of the new habits and boundaries I have created around these platforms. My crappy phone recently died after getting soaked on a particularly wet day of spring skiing. I was glad I still had my old Iphone. The minute I reconnected it, I myself felt more connected, which is truly a weird thing to me. For the foreseeable future I plan to use my iphone and approach the technology with respect and healthy boundaries. In other news, Emily and I recently filled our freezer with local meat. We purchased a beef box from Vaquero Ranch at the recommendation of our friends David and Meagan from Boundless Farmstead. Their beef box is a great product and it doesn’t demand quite as big a financial commitment or freezer space as a quarter, a half, or a whole cow. With the box you get a variety of cuts from ground beef, to steaks, roasts and stew meat. The price is fair, the transaction was personal and friendly and the quality of the meat is top notch.  Also this last month we purchased our half hog from the good folks at The Great American Egg in Powell Butte Oregon. We had signed up for a butchering class, where we would have been hands on in breaking down our half hog and preparing it for our freezer. I was bummed when the class was cancelled due to Snowpocalypse 2019. Central Oregon Butcher Boys ended up doing the work for us. They provide a great service and do an excellent job. If you have a farm raised or hunted animal that you need butchered in central Oregon, these are your guys.  So I read a really interesting book this last month. It is called Vaccines, Autoimmunity and the Changing Nature of Childhood Illness. The author, Thomas Cowan, is a medical doctor with over three decades experience working as a pediatrician. Dr Cowan talks about how the goal of the extensive vaccine program suggested by the CDC is to provoke an immune response, and that is precisely what we are seeing with the alarming rise in the rate of autoimmune illness and chronic disease in children. These conditions include food allergies, environmental allergies, asthma and autism. Dr Cowan also talks about what we deny our children when we vaccinate them and protect them from the opportunity to aquire certain illnesses in childhood. Childood illnesses such as the flu, chicken pox and the measles and their accompanying fever, are rites of passage of sorts for a childs immune system. This is something that I feel is often anecdotally reffered to, knowledge that exists as an old wives tale of sorts. Dr Cowan explores the science behind how the immune system develops and the difference between immunity conferred by vaccines versus immunity acquired through illness. This information is particularly relevant currently in Oregon, where HB 3063 is being hurried through State Legislature. This bill aims to mandate full compliance with the CDC vaccination schedule for children in Oregons Public and Private School Systems. I urge families to do some research into the implications of this before they offer their support for this bill, or through inaction do nothing for or against it. I fully appreciate the sensitivity of the discussion over vaccines and understand that people have very strong and deep feelings on both sides of this issue. I just hope people understand the consequences we may see when if we give up our freedom of choice on this issue. For more information on this, you can visit oregoniansformedicalfreedom.com The information in Dr Cowans book dovetails nicely with the work of Dr Zach Bush, of Farmers Footprint, which I talked about and recommended on last months show. Our choices of how to fill our pantry and how to feed our bodies directly affect our health and the health of our environment. How are some of these choices being made for us, with things like GMOs sneaking onto grocery store shelves or the effects of being downwind or downstream of the application of glyphosate/Roundup on foodcrops. If you are interested in learning more about the science surrounding how our bodies are responding to vaccines, pesticides, and environmental toxins then you need to look into the work of Zach Bush and Thomas Cowan. They are shedding light on the science that the CDC, the FDA, Big Agriculture and Big Pharma are hesitant to aknowledge or downright trying to suppress. Understanding the issues that these two Doctors are highlighting is one of the most important things you can do if you want to be an informed advocate for your health, the health of your family and the long term sustainability of our species. That sounds dramatic, and it is. This is serious stuff that deserves our attention. What kind of things are you learning on these topics? Who are you reading? What films are you watching? I admit, I am taken by the info these guys are putting out there. But I remain open to hearing other opinions. I would love to hear some rational critiques of these doctors work so that I can more fully understand these issues. So if you have come across some compelling information on these topics, please share with me! I suppose this is a good time to move onto our guests for the show today. As I mentioned early, Rae Alberg and Lauren Van Coutren joined me recently for a talk about the Bend Forest School. Rae Alberg is an educator, mother, and lover of all things colorful, creative, muddy and green. She has over 15 years of experience in the early childhood field, many spent working, thinking, dreaming and planning a program that supports the whole child. Rae has a Masters Degree and Oregon Teaching License in Early Intervention/Early Childhood Special Education as well as a graduate certificate in Infant Toddler Mental Health from Portland State University. In 2016, Rae became a Certified Forest Kindergarten Teacher through CedarSong Nature School’s Teacher Training program..  Lauren Van Coutren has always felt at home in nature. Growing up in the woods of Maine, she spent most days outside, exploring the natural world around her.  Lauren feels that these childhood experiences contributed to her passion to provide children with experiences to heal and grow in nature.  After graduating with a BA in Therapeutic Recreation, Lauren found herself in a Psychiatric hospital working with adolescents. She led groups to teach her patients healthy ways to cope with stress and build confidence. This work was deeply important, but Lauren knew there was something missing. This feeling led her to Bend in 2006 to work for a Wilderness Therapy program. The missing piece was nature. It was here that she witnessed her students grow in lasting and life-changing ways. Lauren was no stranger to this transformation for herself. She was challenged in ways that ultimately built confidence and instilled personal growth.  Lauren earned a MA in Early Childhood Education. Lauren’s most recent educational experience has been as a elementary teacher in the Bend La Pine School District. For 6 years, Lauren has worked as a 3rd grade and Kindergarten teacher. Working at LaPine and Rosland Elementary schools in LaPine, Lauren was able to utilize abundant nature opportunities right in the schools’ backyard.  I hope that you enjoy my talk with Rae and Lauren. I like to understand the etymology of words, particularly in Arabic because it can be poetic at times.  For instance, the Arabic word for human being is Insaan.  From what I could find, it could have two roots, one is to forget and the other is to relate, to love or be loved.   So now I'm thinking wow! to relate, and to love or be loved, that makes sense that they're similar, that's what relationships are, the ones you choose anyway. Because I'm reminded of folks who say, "you don't choose your family". Which touches again on transgenerational trauma, experiences that shape a generation, and impact another. Paul Raeburn, in his book "Do fathers matter? what science is telling us about the parent we've overlooked" describes the research conducted by the Cowans, a married couple, both psychology professors at berkley university. And they like most couples have had to deal with challenging conflict after their children were born, they also noticed the same trend in their circles of friends and family. This led them to take a look at research out there and they found studies across the world that traced the beginning of difficulties in relationships to the early years of becoming a family. This had led them to ask the question "what is wrong with us?" So the Cowans engaged a number of couples In a longitudinal study that followed couples before they became parents and until their children were 18 months of age.  The study found that 20% get divorced by the time their children are of kindergarten age, with the remaining 80% having severe reservations about their marriage or heading toward divorce.   Keep in mind the study was conducted between 1979 and 1990, when women were not as likely to be working outside the home as they are now. There was some good news, the children of present dads, or fathers who were fully present in supporting their partners' pregnancy had an easier transition years later when they went to kindergarden. They think that happier couples, are more nurturing which in turn results in children who enter school feeling loved and supported.   Ever since we got married, I started paying attention to older couples, those who've been together for a long while, overwhelmingly the things I heard revolved around respect, communication, and placing their relationship ahead of the children.  There are many programs that address parental skills, and what I like about the Cowans and the work they've done, is that they've found that, more than parenting skills, it's how couples communicate and overcome conflict that contributes to the family being healthy and happy.   According to Paul Raeburn, Amina Alio, a professor of Community and public health, at the University of South Florida, along with her colleagues, found that fathers who were involved with their partners during pregnancy reduced the risk that children would die in the first year of life. The death rate of infants whose fathers were not around was nearly four times that of infants whose fathers were involved.   Infants whose fathers were absent, and had no involvement in the pregnancy, were more likely to be born with lower birth weight and to be born prematurely.  Anemia, high blood pressure, and more serious ailments were also more prevalent among women whose children's fathers were absent.   So if you're a future dad, and you're taking time off to attend all the prenatal appointments, if you're allowing your partner to be heard about their fears, actively listening and being present, you are actively contributing to the survival of your child.   Have a friend who's about to become a dad? ask them about their experience so far, let them talk. We also explore 5 female artists (Lorna Simpson, Valie Export, Ana Mendieta, Ewa Partum and J.C. Cowans) who we admire for their beautiful and detailed illustration of Womanhood through Art. And finally, our C.F.O (Chief Feminist Operative) Anna Quick- Palmer writes and reads about what Fistula is and how the rarely spoken about birth condition plagues women and girls in the developing world.
