The 2018 Mary Kay Place vehicle “Diane” may be a bit of a gloomy drive around a weathered stretch of the Northeast, but luckily it includes a bevy of character actresses and Broadway legends in the passenger seat. Estelle Parsons, Andrea Martin, Joyce Van Patten, LaChanze, Celia Keenan-Bolger, Phyllis Sommerville, Dierdre O'Connell and Glynis O'Connor bring life to a movie essentially about the inevitability of death and what it takes to make peace with yourself before it's your turn. Filmmaker Marco Calvani talks with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™ about “High Tide” his feature film debut that stars Marco Pigossi (Lourenço) as a Brazilian undocumented immigrant adrift Provincetown in the late summer. The film is about a young man coping after a break up & left adrift in Ptown with his travel visa running out. Lourenço then meets Maurice a Black American & a romance evolves. The film distributed by Strand Releasing premiered at South by Southwest & was released in NYC earlier this month followed by an expansion to Los Angeles & will begin a run at Waters Edge Cinema in Provincetown & Coolidge Corner Theater in Brookline, MA on Friday November 1st.

Amongst theater people, Estelle Parsons is revered as an actor's actor. She won an Oscar as Best Supporting Actress in "Bonnie and Clyde", another Academy nomination for her work in "Rachel, Rachel". Five Tony nominations, a BAFTA award, an Obie, a Theater World Award, and has been inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame. She created a memorable character as Bev Harris, Roseanne's television Mom. And that doesn't even scratch the surface of Estelle's acting or directing credits. As a director, she has staged works by Shakespeare, Brecht and Oscar Wilde amongst others. She's a former artistic director at the Actors Studio and is still a stalwart at that esteemed institution. She is, she says, most alive on stage in front of a live audience. Alec then speaks with Co-Associate Artistic Director Estelle Parsons, who has been with the studio since 1962. Parsons earned an Academy Award for ”Bonnie and Clyde,” the second film she ever made, and has earned five Tony nominations and two Obies in her illustrious career. Abductions in the 1970s are characterized by cases that gained a level of popularity on their individual merits. The Pascagoula Abduction for instance was a media sensation that occurred during a very prominent UFO/humanoid flap. It's also the first year that a handful of abduction cases were reported. Interestingly, they all occurred within 10 days of each other. In 1974, The Carl Higdon abduction captured the attention of national headlines, and one year later, the Travis Walton case captured widespread press attention, primarily because it was a missing person's/murder case before it became an alien abduction. In 1975, 25 abduction cases were reported, setting a new record for the most reported in a year. Aside from the publicity of the Walton case, it's believed that the premiere of The UFO Incident, starring James Earl Jones and Estelle Parsons, depicting the abduction of Betty Barney brought forth many experiencers, including Patty Roach, who experienced an abduction with her family in 1973. The abduction experiences of Brian Scott became known due to the film's release as well. Other abduction cases would come to the forefront in the 70s, such as the cases of Lee Parish, and the Stanford Three. All of these cases that I have mentioned we have covered on the podcast before, so it only makes sense to bring the most obscure cases to the table. Researcher Cole Herrold (New World Explorers Society) joins me discuss some of the strangest cases you've never heard before. An unannounced visit by Roseanne and Jackie's parents throws the Conner house into an uproar. Dan and Jackie urge a usually outspoken Roseanne to stick up for herself. Hostility and craziness abound, but the biggest shock comes when Bev announces they are considering moving to Lanford, though later dismisses this as just a casual idea. Bruce Willis makes a surprise cameo appearance as himself during the end credits. Note: This episode marks the first appearance of Estelle Parsons as Beverly Harris, Roseanne and Jackie's mother.

Born and raised in New York City, Marie Wallace found herself drawn to the footlights at an early age. She appeared in her first professional production, off-Broadway, as a teenager. She also modeled, both on the runway and in print. In 1959, Marie landed her first Broadway show: as one of the showgirls in the original production of "Gypsy", starring Ethel Merman. Her list of Broadway credits grew to include The Beauty Part (1962-63); Nobody Loves an Albatross (1963-64), with Robert Preston; The Right Honourable Gentleman (1965-66) with Coral Browne and Frances Sternhagen; Sweet Charity (1966-67) starring Gwen Verdon and Ruth Buzzi, and directed by Bob Fosse; Mert and Phil with Beverlee McKinsey and Estelle Parsons, and directed by Joseph Papp; and The Women (1973) with Myrna Loy and Kim Hunter. She also toured the U.S. with Jackie Gleason in a production of Sly Fox. On TV, Marie guest-starred on Car 54 Where Are You?, The Phil Silvers Show, The Perry Como Show, and Victor Borge's 20th Anniversary Show, among others. She played three roles on the Gothic soap opera Dark Shadows, beginning in 1968: evil Eve, demented Jenny Collins, and antique shop-owner Megan Todd. Megan became a vampire, and the day the character met her demise, Marie got a call from her agent with another job. "I said, 'I've just been staked,' I'd better take it!," she recalled years later. Marie then moved to NBC and originated the character India Delaney on the 1970 Another World spin-off Somerset. She remained on the show until 1972. In 1978, she played Johnsie Lafite on The Guiding Light. In the early 1980s, Marie went to Los Angeles on a television assignment and stayed for two years, making guest appearances on several shows, including Fame and Fantasy Island. While there, she also appeared in commercials. The actress returned to New York and established a career as a professional photographer, shooting assignments for many clients in New York. She also continues to act on stage and television. In the winter of 1993, Marie worked with Dark Shadows star Jonathan Frid as he made his directing debut on a stage production of The Lion in Winter, at the Georgia College Theatre in Milledgeville, Georgia. Heading up a cast of students, Marie played Eleanor of Aquitaine. In 1999, she had a brief role as Molly O'Day on One Life To Live. She's been a fan favorite at the annual Dark Shadows Festivals, often performing dramatic one-woman shows and readings. She is currently working on a book about her stage career, In Shadows and On Stage, with publication planned for late 2004. Read a preview at Marie's official site, part of Dark Shadows Online.

HELEN WHITNEY, WRITER, DIRECTOR, PRODUCEREmmy and Peabody award-winning, film producer, director and writer Helen Whitney has been a prolific creator of documentaries and feature films. Her compelling subject matter has included topics such as youth gangs, presidential candidates, the McCarthy era, mental illness, Pope John Paul II, Great Britain’s class structure, homosexuality and photographer Richard Avedon. Among the actors she has worked with: Lindsay Crouse, Austin Pendleton, David Strathairn, Brenda Fricker, Teresa Wright, Estelle Parsons.Throughout her career, she has maintained a deep interest in spiritual journeys, which she first explored with her documentary The Monastery, a 90-minute ABC special, about the oldest Trappist community in the Americas. Whitney followed this film with a three-hour Frontline documentary for PBS, John Paul II: The Millennial Pope, and in 2007 she produced The Mormons, a four-hour PBS series that explored the richness, complexities and controversies surrounding the Mormon faith. Following the Sept. 11 attacks, she produced Faith and Doubt at Ground Zero, a two-hour documentary that examined how religious belief – and unbelief – of Americans was challenged and altered by the spiritual aftershocks of 9/11. The film has been repeated numerous times since it first aired in 2002, and it was a PBS featured presentation on the 1st and on the 10th anniversary of the attacks. One of Whitney’s recent works examines the power, limitations, and in rare cases, the dangers of forgiveness through emblematic stories ranging from personal betrayal to genocide. This film involved shooting throughout America, and such countries as South Africa, Germany, Rawanda, The three-hour series, Forgiveness: A time to Love and a Time to Hate, aired on PBS in 2011 and it also inspired Whitney to write a book of the same title, with a forward written by the Dalai Lama. The filmmaker has also received an Academy Award nomination, the Humanitas Prize, Emmys, two DuPont-Columbia Journalism Awards and many other recognitions for her work. She is a Woodrow Wilson Fellow, and has presented her films and lectured at universities, museums and churches around the country (including Yale, Princeton, Harvard, Brigham Young, Stanford, the National Cathedral, the Corcoran Gallery, the Minneapolis Art Institute). Into the Night: Portraits of Life and Death, a two-hour feature documentary, features fascinating, unexpected voices from various walks of life: old and young, believers and nonbelievers, the dying and the healthy, well known and obscure. Among them: Caitlin Doughty, an alternative mortician and bestselling author with her own YouTube following; Adam Frank, an astrophysicist and NPR commentator, Gabriel Byrne, renowned actor of stage and screen; Jim Crace, award-winning novelist and environmentalist; Max More, a cryonicist and futurist; Stephen Cave, a British philosopher; Phyllis Tickle, a near-death experience spokesperson and religious historian; Pastor Vernal Harris, a Baptist minister and advocate for hospice care in African-American communities; Jeffrey Piehler, a Mayo Clinic heart surgeon. However varied their backgrounds, all are unified by their uncommon eloquence and intelligence, and most important by their dramatic experience of death. Each of them has been shocked into an awareness of mortality–and they are forever changed. For them death is no longer an abstraction, far away in the future. Whether through a dire prognosis, the imminence of their own death, the loss of a loved one, a sudden epiphany, or a temperament born to question, these are people who have truly ‘awakened’ to their own mortality.Into the Night creates a safe smart place that allows people to talk about a subject of universal importance. It is the conversation we yearn to have, but too often turn away from in fear and distress. Yet our culture is at a critical turning point, driven in part by the baby boomer generation that is insisting on a new openness and on this deeper conversation. Our film speaks to this emerging movement with a novel approach meant to provoke searching conversations, both private and public.Ultimately the film is meant to raise questions, not to provide answers. How could it? Death is “that undiscovered country,” as Hamlet so famously described it, “from whose bourn/No traveler returns.”https://www.intothenightdoc.com See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

"We’re all fools. You can’t be part of the human race and not be a fool to somebody." Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward had already been married for a decade before Newman decided to make his directorial debut with Woodward as his star in 1968’s Rachel, Rachel. The film was a small character piece that likely garnered box office and awards attention because of the caliber of those two people heading it up. It was nominated for Best Picture in 1968, but seems to be largely lost in time these days. How well does it hold up today? Is it worth looking at? Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we continue looking at and celebrating 50th anniversaries of films from 1968 with our series on the Best Picture nominees of that year by talking about Newman’s film Rachel, Rachel. We talk about why we think the film largely is forgotten these days, what works with it and what doesn’t. We look at Woodward’s performance, clearly a performance that stands out as the principal reason to look at the film. We chat about the other performances in the film, notably Estelle Parsons as Rachel’s friend, and what they bring to the table. We look at what Newman does as a director and talk about how well it works when paired with the cinematography and editing. And we debate what awards and nominations we would’ve bestowed on it if it was up to us. It’s an interesting film to look at for context of the time, but doesn’t stand out as something worth looking at for anything more than that. Still, it allows for a great conversation, so tune in to this week’s show! The Next Reel – when the movie ends, our conversation begins. Barnet Kellman is most closely associated with being part of the creative team of the groundbreaking TV series Murphy Brown directing every episode of the first three seasons of the series (in addition to the series finale.) But he's done so much more and his journey to get there included displaying pure chutzpah at Colgate University to working in small theaters in daytime drama in New York to becoming a go-to name in Hollywood for directing TV pilots; a first episode that (presumably) sets the template for what is to come. (And, to his credit, those pilots included Mad About You, Suddenly Susan, The George Lopez Show and many others.) In fact, we get some insight into what can make a television pilot special enough that viewers will want to spend seasons/years with the people in that world. Now he's imparting much of this wisdom to the young, creative minds of tomorrow as a Professor of Cinematic Arts at USC, as well as going back to his roots in the theater this summer directing Judith Ivey and Estelle Parsons in Israel Horovitz's play "Out of the Mouths of Babes" Off-Broadway at the Cherry Lane Theater. A smart, funny, talented man - great storyteller - fantastic conversation - enjoy Barnet Kellman! Also, indulge me for a few minutes as I share a few words about Prince and seeing him live in 1981 opening for The Rolling Stones.  Things did not go well for him that day - but it obviously didn't seem to hold him back any. -LM

The story of an unlikeable (by everyone) white man named Jeff Gerber who wakes up one day as a Black man in the 1970s. Challenging notions of white liberalism, disparity, and pushing the envelope of racial comedy in its time, Watermelon Man pulls no punches. More than simply a morality tale, Van Peebles takes a stab at the heart of what it means to be a man of color during that time.
