Tread Merrily 2024 continues with an episode of ALF known as "ALF's Special Christmas" — although it will be referred to as “ALF'S Christmas Special”. When the Tanners take the opportunity to spend Christmas at a cabin in the woods, ALF grumbles about the lack of indoor plumbing and electricity. His antagonism gets so bad, Willie sends him outside for a few hours. ALF ends up driving into town with the cabin's owner, who also volunteers as Santa at the local hospital. There, ALF learns the "true" meaning of Christmas as guest stars Cleavon Little and Carl Franklin class up the joint. Will the Tanners find ALF before he's mistaken for a toy? Also: a wild Molly Hagan appears! Erik and Justin end up watching almost two hours of ALF thanks to a typo. "ALF's Special Christmas" proves to be Seasonal Affective Disorder in TV form and it inspires a lot of dark comedy. Justin is convinced TV in the late 1980s was all in soft focus. The ALF impressions are abundant, but there's nary a Max Wright impression to be heard. Justin realizes the problem with Gordon Shumway answering to "ALF." Erik's qualitative objection to Ben Stiller comes to light. Unfunniness gets examined. The pair debate whether or not Edgar Wright should make Don't and an actor brings a new spin to the tired Lamaze joke.

Tune in as Dustin Holden (Dustin Can Read & Watch, The Rewatch Recap) collaborates with Arthur once again to review and recap Once Bitten, the 1985 vampire movie that takes its audience on a campy ride as a high schooler becomes the latest target of a centuries-old vampire who requires the blood of male virgins in order to sustain her youth and immortality. Bits and pieces of vampire lore that include a shout-out to the sci-fi novel Blindsight by Peter Watts (which 2CC had covered earlier this year), the fun that can be had with a phone-filled pickup bar, and the ways in which this movie's dated comedy has aged make up just a few of the subjects that this episode discusses. Shat the Movies: 80's & 90's Best Film Review

One Shat host is a social justice warrior. The other hates Mel Brooks movies. So "Blazing Saddles" seemed doomed from the start. But there's magic in Gene Wilder, Cleavon Little and the old frontier. Listener Ed took Shat The Movies way back to 1974 for this satirical Western that Gene Lyons argues isn't racist, sexist or even remotely offensive (other than one particular performance). Dick Ebert was impressed with the "real Hollywood Western" feel of the movie, attributing the incredible cast and chemistry to divine intervention, and also the groundbreaking farts. In this episode, the Shat Boys discuss the connection between "Blazing Saddles" and "La Bamba," cheer for Slim Pickens and Harvey Korman and wonder at how cleverly the film breaks the fourth wall. You know those episodes where Gene gets excited and quotes the movie a lot? Yeah, it's one of those. Laugh Tracks Legends of Comedy with Randy and Steve

Meet Leo Bloom, The Waco Kid, Willy Wonka, Dr. "Fronk-un-steen" and so many more when you meet this week's Legend -- actor, writer, and director Gene Wilder. From a serendipitous meeting with Mel Brooks, Gene would build an astounding career with characters that always balanced the comedy with some human heart. Gene made just 37 movies over the course of his career, but for people born in the 1950s he was seemingly ubiquitous. Gene ended his most active years with a series of films with fellow Legend Richard Pryor, and he went into semi-retirement after the tragic death of his wife Gilda Radner. But occasionally, Gene would pop up on television in small but juicy role such as his guest spot on Will and Grace which earned him an Emmy for best guest actor in a comedy series. As always find extra clips below and thanks for sharing our shows! Want more Wilder? Gene was essential to Mel Brooks' raunchiest and most provocative movie -- Blazing Saddles. Here's the full clip of Gene's Waco Kid explaining the facts to Cleavon Little's Sheriff Bart. https://youtu.be/hYTQ7__NNDI?si=qlE_g3kh6KHxZJoM Gene's breakout film role was as nervous accountant Leo Bloom in The Producers. Paired with Zero Mostel, the duo made a irresistible comedy movie team. https://youtu.be/QgJBvEMOpWQ?si=zccr3lJNF65XnTXW Young Frankenstein is the pinnacle of Gene's work with Mel Brooks -- it's elegant, even touching in places -- yet filled with the clever and often naughty comedy expected from the duo. https://youtu.be/2p5AG0Tqh3A?si=nSahuc1C_0Po-U6G Gene made a series of highly successful films with Richard Pryor including Stir Crazy in which their wildly different personalities come in handy when they are sent up the river for a robbery they didn't commit!https://youtu.be/oyU6En9HN8E?si=1M4iLuToIAhjsxmr

1974 brought the controversy and the funny with Mel Brook's Blazing Saddles. This flick undertook the mission of taking on racism and westerns through the story of a black, half-Dutch, sheriff appointed to a small town of morons to reduce it's worth so a dirty politician can buy it up and gentrify it. Blazing Saddles features the sparkling chemistry of Cleavon Little and Gene Wilder, alongside a large cast of familiar faces from the old silver screen, in a satirical flick that made $120 million and was nominated for 3 Oscars. But does it hold up? Listen in as Jon, Colin, and Brent debate what's twue, and where the white women are at, as we whip out this verdict.

Come back with us to the 70's for two music-focused films that you may know more for the songs on their soundtracks than for the story content. We start off with "FM" from 1978, with an incredible cast, including Martin Mull, Cleavon Little and Eileen Brennan. The plot follows the staff at a radio station in Los Angeles that is struggling to maintain it's integrity while corporate forces want to blindly pursue profits. It's a noble tale, but it doesn't completely hit the target. We follow that up with the massively superior "Car Wash" from 1976, which was written by Joel Schumacher. The film is a funny, honest look at the team of oddballs working at a Los Angeles car wash, and follows them over the course of a hot summer day. There is a parade of peculiar customers, some pranks and hijinks between the workers, and plenty of social commentary that still feels pointed now. These movies are both fun looks back and are worth searching out, but we highly recommend Car Wash. We then proceed to list the various things we've been watching for fun. Please let us know what you thought of the show, and send us some suggestions for future episodes. You can email us at flickersfrom@yahoo.com or flickersfrom@gmail.com. 1974, hell of a year - Richard Nixon becomes the first US president forced to resign after the Watergate Scandal, a 55 MPH Speed Limit imposed to preserve gas usage US-wide, and Mel Brooks releases 'Blazing Saddles' - a western satire. When a film has a five-minute, pre-recorded warning about the context of the film, you know you're in for something. 'Blazing Saddles' stars Cleavon Little, Gene Wilder, Harvey Korman, Madeline Khan, Mel Brooks, and many more in this eyebrow raising faux-western. Tread Perilously starts a Grab Bag month with the penultimate episode of Supertrain -- "The Green Girl." When Supertrain hosts a televised poker tournament, all the cardsharps from around the country climb aboard for a chance at the $500,000 pot. They're all eccentric and rich enough not to notice the prize money is slowly being replaced with counterfeit currency by the newest addition to the circuit. Will Chief of Operations Wayne Randall discover the truth in time or will he abscond to Cabo San Lucas with the criminal and her ill-gotten gains? Also, can the Big Lewbowski, Roddy McDowall, Cleavon Little, and Clyde Kusatsu save this from derailing? Erik's faith in Supertrain finally wanes. A Battlestar Galactica digression breaks out. Music streaming services get reviewed for reasons. A split decision occurs over The Rolling Stones' "Start Me Up." The choice to use Texas Hold 'Em in Casino Royale gets examined. Justin suggests P.J. Soles as a better choice for this week's key guest role. Jodie Foster enters the discussion, as does James Garner. Overboard might be a worse film than Soldier, but the listener will have to decide. Memories of Supertrain's Weird Baby Man come into play and more Book of Boba Fett talk occurs.

Before acting, Gilliam was a member of the Coast Guard's boxing team where he won 201 out of 217 fights. He remained in the boxing world for decades, working as a referee in California. While working as a fireman for the city of Dallas,[2] Gilliam appeared in the role of "Floyd", the desk clerk in the film Paper Moon. He then went on to appear in such popular movies as Blazing Saddles and Back to the Future Part III. Performing in Blazing Saddles was difficult for him since he played a despicable racist who repeatedly racially insults the African-American characters as "niggers," especially the hero, played by Cleavon Little. Gilliam was so uncomfortable that he apologized to Little who had to remind him that the slur was simply in the script and was treated unambiguously negatively since he was playing a villain.Gilliam has had roles in movies such as Honeymoon in Vegas, Thunderbolt and Lightfoot, Farewell, My Lovely, Fletch, Gator, Telefon, and The Terror Within II. His television appearances include Alice, Charlie's Angels, The A-Team, The Dukes of Hazzard, The Fall Guy, and he appeared as a regular on Evening Shade.

This is a VERY divisive, satirical take on racism and is full of terms completely inappropriate and harmful toward many groups, specifically the Black community. The Plotaholics Podcast: Movie Reviews

This week, the Plotaholics dig into Jim Carrey's first leading role in the 1985 vampire-comedy, Once Bitten. In this film, Carrey plays Mark, a high school virgin whose girlfriend, Robin (Karen Kopins) is just not going to be having sex with him anytime soon. Mark teams up with his buddies, and they venture into the big, bad city of Hollywood (in an ice cream truck, no less) to try to get lucky. It is here that Mark meets the Countess--a beautiful vampire who must feed on the blood of a virgin three times before Halloween is over, or risk losing her ageless looks. Once Bitten is charming and incredibly dated. See how Shane and Bryan feel about Carrey's turn as the angsty teenage vampire.Support the show (https://plotaholics.com)

Jim comes back from vacation to learn that fellow PIs are losing their licenses through a series of set-ups. He teams up with a crack squad of motormouths to figure out what's going on, who's behind it, and why the private security firm Waterbury wants to do this in the first place. It's a fun David Chase-penned romp with that lovely Rockford Files stiffening of fantastic character play from guests Cleavon Little, Simon Oakland and Val Bisoglio. Hey all. Welcome to episode one. I have been wanting to start this show for a while but could not figure where I wanted to go. But then inspiration took hold and I knew I had to sit down and record, right where I was. Thus, this first episode does not have the best sound quality. I knew I had to hit record and that even setting up properly in my studio would kill the spark. In this episode I talk about the pimptacular life of little Nissan guy and his cane led life. I also talk about Honda guy and why he is not pimptacular. Also Richard Pryor, Ice-T, Steve Martin, and Cleavon Little. Don't be Honda guy. Alan and Walt wrap up the credits and begin to discuss the camera movement toward the men working on the railroad. We get a good look at the rail line and number of people doing the work. There seems to be a good number of overseers keeping on eye on the work being done. Eventually Lyle shows up and talks about the heat of the day before a Chinese worker passes out. Lyle unceremoniously demands they dock him a day's pay for nappin' on the job. At that moment, we get a story from actor Burton Gilliam about a discussion with Cleavon Little about some of the language his character has to use. Alan and Walt discuss some of their outdoor labor experiences before wrapping up the minute. We hope you enjoyed today's episode. Mister Dugan had the potential to be a hit show. It was a topical series about a recently elected idealistic black congressman who has to contend with his less than helpful staff. Norman Lear was producing, Cleavon Little was the star. However, just days before it was to air on CBS in 1979 Lear himself pulled the show from the schedule. What went wrong? The boys are agog at how the minutes are lining up and they revel in their good fortune. It's no surprise at all, to discover that Bill is more polite than Matt. Ricky wants to show Jimmy something and he “whips out the brochure.” The fellas cast Cleavon Little. Bill tears thru an IMBD page and wants no chiming in from Matt. Matt wants Bill to enjoy more episodic television. Jere Burns gets a lotta chatter and rightfully so. The boys break down the brochure and the continuing Roma sales pitch. The fellas consider an “infinity of Perhapses.” Matt schools Bill on “second-acting”and also being grateful. We all agree that things that make us go out, better be puppy worthy. Nitty McPickerton wants the prop department to shove this sales brochure up their asses. Some housekeeping about Columbo and the Mamet family. An unprecedented SECOND “Who Would They Play” in one episode is forced upon the fellas by one Bob Urich. Some more Romaville spitballing. The boys take a minute to celebrate the halfway point, and to look ahead to the second act!!!

This week, we saddle up with The Next Picture Show's Keith Phipps to look back at the 1974 Mel Brooks comedy classic Blazing Saddles! Equal parts raunchy and deliciously subversive even today, Blazing Saddles is a beautifully acerbic parody of the classic Western, following a black sherriff (Cleavon Little) tasked with defending/offending the puritanical town of Rock Ridge, while scheming huckster Hedy ("Hedley!") Lamarr (Harvey Korman) plots the down's demise. It's a drop dead hilarious movie that still holds up today, and is a wonderful testament to one of comedy's greatest filmmakers. Második évadunk első adásában Gene Wilderre emlékezünk: Mel Brooks 1974-es westernparódiájában a Blazing Saddles (magyarul Fényes nyergek) című filmben ő játszotta Waco Kidet, a legendás pisztolyhőst. Milyen jelzőkkel lehet körülírni Mel Brooks tabudöntögető, harsány humorát? A Cleavon Little által játszott főszereplő, a 19. századi telepeseket fekete bőrszínével megbotránkoztató Bart sheriff mitől működik, mitől ő a film legizgalmasabb karaktere? Vakfolt podcast is back, baby!
