Val and her friends arrived at the brawl and were led to an arena in the woods, but something felt very wrong when they were locked in cages until their fights were called, and as they watched the first fight, they immediately realized that the Brawl For It All was a fight to the death. Robin bargained with the organizer to fight Jack's fights as a well as his own, and Val was called to face her first opponent. Not wanting to take a life, she tried to fake it, but the announcer called her out and declared she had no choice but to finish it. Will Val choose to cross this line, or will she find another way out? Enter... if you dare. It's squealing martial arts and ninja death mayhem as Ali joins us to discuss Enter the Dragon (1973), directed by Robert Clouse and Enter the Ninja (1981), directed by Menahem Golan. Each of these films were seminal in their own way, the first as a tragically premature end-point for Bruce Lee's career, and the second as a statement of intent for the then-new Cannon Films Group. But we also address such existential questions as: IS "wait... what?" the new buzz-phrase of the decade? IS there any greater joy than watching a very small man beat up a very tall man? And of course, the age old conundrum: NINJA or NO NINJA? We will be announcing a Spoiler Territory section for both films, so if you haven't seen them before you listen, you can nevertheless avoid spoilers for Enter the Dragon by skipping ahead to the 1:01:41 mark, and for Enter the Ninja by skipping ahead to 1:45:14. “If it makes sense like I think it makes sense in my head, then we're onto a winner” The panel of peril place their bets on their praying mantis of choice, watch it get roundly battered by its mantis opponent, and then stick on this week's film Enter The Dragon (Robert Clouse, 1973). Lee (Bruce Lee) is a highly proficient martial artist and disciple of Shaolin. He is yet to encounter a man he can not defeat or school. So who better to task with bringing down secretive drug lord Han (Kien Shih) than our man in Hong Kong? Entering Han's martial arts tournament on his private island in order to gain intel, Lee is joined by Vietnam vets Roper (John Saxon) and Williams (Jim Kelly), as they all join the fight for their own reasons. Watch the trailer here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=81jCPIag4KA ********PLOT SPOILER ALERT******** Further fuelling Lee's quest is the revelation that Han has a habit of getting the sex workers on his island hooked on opium, and Lee's own sister took her own life following a brutal battle with Han's henchmen. Needless to say, somebody needs to have the last laugh – but will that person be the honourable Lee or the brass-handed drug lord Han? What the actual (back)flip did the panel make of this one? How the actual flip can they improve upon the Han's dastardly scheme? And who the actual flip will be victorious in this week's competition?
Enter the Dragon, a classic martial arts film from 1973, stars Bruce Lee in his final completed film appearance. Episode 297: The history of Chinese immigration to Canada is a story marked by adversity. Chinese labourers played a pivotal role in building the Canadian railway under harsh conditions, yet faced institutional discrimination, including the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1923, which limited immigration and separated families for years. Despite these challenges, the Chinese community's resilience has left an indelible mark on Canadian culture. Today, we honour their contributions and recognize the need to confront our history's shadows, striving for a more inclusive Canadian identity that values people of all backgrounds. Fifty years ago this month, most of the world was first introduced to a true legend of both cinema and martial arts with the release of this action thriller. Of course that legend was the late, great Bruce Lee who tragically passed away just about a month before this movie was to hit theaters. Needless to say, he left his mark playing Lee a Hong Kong spy/martial arts master who is tasked with infiltrating a mysterious island tournament being run by the nefarious Han played by Kien Shih. Lee also has help from two American martial artists who have joined this tournament played by John Saxon and Jim Kelly. Once on the island, they fight, they feast, and they.....interact with various elements (?) and what results is a rip-roaring kung fu classic. Directed by Robert Clouse, it's time to ENTER...THE....DRAGON! CHAMPION. CHARISMA. CHARACTER. These are the qualities that make a badass. Bruce Lee is the unconventional, influential, Kung fu champ on Mt. Crushmore. As Enter the Dragon approaches its 50th anniversary, Jim and A.Ron discuss the influence this movie has on Hollywood today. We lost the star of Bruce Lee too soon, but his artistry echoes on.
