Back for a special Remembrance Day episode! Heather Klages was close with her grandfather, a World War 2 Veteran. While sharing a couple stories about him way back in Episode 11, Heather brings more detail and more stories about his time overseas during the worst global conflict in the history of the world. She also shares more about a trip she took with him back to Holland and how Canadian soldiers are revered there. Heather also gives us her grandfather's response when asked about his opinion regarding Christmas decorations before November 11th. She also explains why she's currently a member of the Royal Canadian Legion and how they continue to keep the Poppy and Remembrance Day relevant to Canadians and how they help in the community. Someone Completely Interesting, keeping the life and memory alive of Someone Completely Interesting. We will remember them.
We explore an overlooked esoteric giant, an individual considered a main modern Pagan Gnostic and advocate of the concept of Chthonic Gnosis. That is the German philosopher and psychologist Ludwig Klages. Beyond his breathtaking Gnostic metaphysics, we'll find how Klages' work interacts and overlaps with Jung and Nietzsche – and why his views have been erroneously connected to National Socialism. For this odyssey, we have the pleasure of being joined at the Virtual Alexandria by Dr. Paul Bishop, author of Ludwig Klages and the Philosophy of Life.Stream Meet The ArchonsSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/aeon-byte-gnostic-radio/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

What's holding you back from living your dream life? Is it you? In this life we have choices, and we choose where we sit. I'm just going to throw out my favourite Harry Potter Quote here: "It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities" - Albus Dumbledore We have choices in this life, they can take you anywhere and beyond what you ever envisioned for yourself. We love this conversation with local radio host and celebrity Heather Klages (who will most likely hate that we called her a celebrity lol)! She speaks about her humble beginnings, big city living, and living her current dream life here locally. It was wonderful to hear about the strong people in Heather's life that shaped the kind and giving soul that we have living here in our community. How lucky we are to have her! Is there something that you can choose to do today that will help you move toward something you want out of this life? Take a minute to think about it, or take a few minutes to write about it. Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast, we talk to musician and ace copy editor Jon Klages, whose grandfather, musician/producer/record label owner Enoch Light likely was the genesis of the Stereo revolution. Yes, you heard me right, classically trained violinist Enoch Light was one of, if not the first, to realize that by placing more than one microphone in a recording studio, you could create a fuller, more dynamic sound to your then, Hi-Fi, and now Stereo system today. Whoa. While Enoch released 25 plus records in his career, it was his record labels Grand Award, Project 3 and Command that really are his legacy. The labels, specifically Command, were known for their audio fidelity as well as their groundbreaking abstract artwork, gatefold sleeves and extensive liner notes that make them so unique. Be it space age pop, jazz, classical, film scores, Bossa Nova or anything else under the sun, Enoch Light was a pioneer in bringing the best music to the consumer in the best light (pun intended) possible. We talk about Jon's being in the recording studio with Enoch and mother Julie Light Klages at many sessions Enoch oversaw with his pipe at the ready. We also spoke about Jon's father, lighting designer William Klages, winner of seven Emmy awards, who worked with both Ernie Kovacs and host Josh Mills' mother Edie Adams at NBC in the early 1950s. We talk to john about his own musical career in the 80s as part of the “Hoboken Sound” with The Individuals, his move to Los Angeles and playing with the LA music scene surrounding the Paisley Underground and his 2021 solo debut Fabulous Twilight. Oh and did we mention that Jon copy edited the upcoming Ernie Kovacs book Ernie in Kovacsland from Fantagraphics coming July 18? Or that he's copy editing Edie Adams second autobiography as well? No? Well, take a listen to this episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast for some serious greatness.

Six more 70's movie reviews for you, and they are more disconnected than usual. It doesn't matter but usually our movie reviews have at least a lil thread that combines at least some of them, consciously or unconsciously. I guess 2 of these do, gawd. Anyway let's start. First up is (Cotton comes to Harlem 1970), an early blaxploitation film that is as weird as the term blaxploitation. We are ongoing in our efforts to unpack the term Blaxploitation, but we try to unpack this movie here today as best we can. Next up (The Great white hope 1970). Here we have Darth Vader and Jane Alexander telling the true story of boxer Jack Johnson. Enter racism. Movin along we have Gravedigger and Coffin back in (Come back Charleston blue 1972) I guess it's a sequel? Next is (Burnt offerings 1976). Karen Black, Oliver Reed, Rocky's coach, and the mighty mom from Butterflies are free, are coming and going from a house stuck in the twilight zone. Almost done, and here's (Sea gypsies 1978- AKA Shipwrecked) A hippie takes his two kids, a reporter, and a stowaway on a sailing trip around the world. I bet it's gonna go great. Ending things today we begin our journey through the 3 70's film of German Director Margarethe Von Trotta. We oddly go 2/1/3 soooooo here's (The second awakening of Christina Klages 1978), and I can at least say here that the films premise is a ten outta ten for me. Thanks for listening folks. Please give us all the stars and write us a nice review about how you are glad there's three 70's movies scientists out there plugging away, and doin their best to make sense out the giant acid trip that was most 70's movies.

This month I chat with David Beth of Theion Publishing, who is also the founder of the Kosmic Gnosis esoteric current. David and I discuss the ancient gods, the proto-human worldview, the stumbling blocks of modern occulture, and a topic near and dear to both of us, the problem with championing spirit over soul (and celestial over chthonic). What would life look like if we didn't rationalize and analyze every experience? David breaks down everything in a way that is easy to understand, and explains how this worldview treats the concepts of Masculine and Feminine. We both reference Ludwig Klages' "Of Cosmogonic Eros", which is available through Theion Publishing's website: https://theionpublishing.com/

Episode 18: Artist Tom Thomson's Mysterious Death in Algonquin Park On Tuesday, July 16th a little over 104 years ago, after almost a week of fruitless searches, the body of Tom Thomson was found on Canoe Lake just east offshore from Little Wapomeo Island. Over the next few days, chaos and confusion seemed to have reined on Canoe Lake. This is the second of a three-part series on the life, the body, and the legend of Canada's artistic icon Tom Thomson. In Part 1, I focused mostly on Thomson's time in Algonquin Park, some of the people he met, and his journey as an artist. In this second part, I will share what happened to his body after it rose to the surface of Canoe Lake on July 16th, 1917. In Part 3, I will focus on the mystery and mythology that has grown up around him since the 1940s and discuss why he has become such a part of the Canadian national identity. Below is the list of biographical and musical references used as the research basis for this series. Episode 17: Tom Thomson's Art and his Introduction to Algonquin Park On Sunday July 8th a little over 104 years ago, Tom Thomson was wearing 'khaki trousers, white canvas shoes, a lumberman's grey woolen shirt and no hat' as he headed off south down Canoe Lake in Algonquin Park. According to the Algonquin Park weather station, the average temperature that day was 16.4 degrees Celsius and about a centimeter and a half of rain had fallen. As all good outdoorsmen do, Tom likely had checked to make sure his spare portaging paddle and a little food were properly tied in place, his tackle box and his sketching outfit were beside him and his trolling line set before he pushed off the dock that dull and wet day. Unfortunately, that would be the last time that Tom Thomson was ever seen or heard from again. This is the first of a three-part series on the life, the body and the legend of Canada's artistic icon Tom Thomson. In Part 1, I focus mostly on his time in Algonquin Park, some of the people he met, mostly on his journey as an artist. Part 2 will be mostly about what happened to his body after it rose to the surface of Canoe Lake on July 16th 1917. Professor Richard Wolin (CUNY) delivers a talk on 'Walter Benjamin Meets the Cosmics' for the TORCH Crisis, Extremes, and Apocalypse network. The “Cosmic Circle” was a Männerbund (society of men), anchored by the inimitable Stefan George, that prowled the Bohemian districts of fin-de-siècle Munich. Its members were committed aesthetes who celebrated matriarchy and hierarchy, engaged in séances and bacchanalia, and, during the late 1890s, hatched a improbable scheme to awaken a comatose Nietzsche through free form dance. They flirted with Ariosophy and contributed to Stefan George’s yearbook, Blätter für die Kunst, which unashamedly featured a swastika on its cover. Among its members were: Ludwig Klages, Alfred Schuler, and Karl Wolfskehl – the so-called “Jewish Cosmic.” Walter Benjamin eulogized the Cosmics: he corresponded with Klages and employed their ideas as the methodological cornerstone of his celebrated Arcades Project. Why did he revere their work, and why has the “Cosmic connection” been so little discussed in run-of-the-mill Benjamin scholarship?
“There’s a taste revolution going on around the world right now, and everyone wants better.” If you enjoy craft beer, then this episode is a must listen! Ilan Klages-Mundt (@insightilan) is the co-founder/maestro of Insight Brewing, which occupies a 20,000 square foot facility and tap room in Minneapolis. Some of their well-known beers include Hell Chicken, Troll Way, Sunken City, Lambton Dragon, and Devil’s Companion. During college, Ilan tasted a craft beer in Denmark that literally changed his life. The Belgium beer, named Westvleteren 12, was voted No. 1 on a Top 50 beer list, and Ilan had purchased two expensive bottles to sample. After his first sip, Ilan’s lip began to quiver because he had never tasted anything so good before. From then on he knew his calling was craft beer. Ilan read stacks of books about brewing and then traveled the world for a year working at different breweries in England, Japan, Denmark, and Belgium. He had pulled together $3,400 and bought a one-way ticket to England were he began at Fuller’s Brewery. With minimal funds, he traded his labor for food and a place to sleep at each location. The grunt work was difficult and exhausting but necessary for Ilan to understand every detail of the brewing process. Upon his return to Minnesota, Ilan moved in with his aunt and began the daunting task of starting his own brewery. In spite of his passions, he lacked the business skills needed for such a costly endeavor, so he partnered with a few local business leaders who each provided a unique and complementary area of expertise. After nearly a year of raising capital, largely via small increments from friends and family, Insight Brewing became a reality in November of 2014. His desire to share great tasting craft beer with the people of Minnesota is in full swing, and Ilan continues to collaborate with breweries around the globe. I hope you enjoy our conversation! Some topics mentioned and discussed: Illan’s passion for music, specifically playing and teaching the cello Insight Brewing’s plan to acquire a new 17,000 sq. ft. facility Hilarious world travel stories The idea of simplicity when it comes to brewing beer Losing out on a $25,000 fellowship that he planned on using during his year of travel Difficulties in raising capital and dealing with naysayers Alcohol culture in the U.S. versus other nations The effect prohibition had on local breweries The state and national craft beer market Parallels between the food and craft beer revolution Ilan's favorites related to the twin cities: 1. Favorite Meal Under $15: Pizzeria Lola - Korean BBQ Pizza 2. Fascinating Person You Would Like to Have Dinner With: R.T. Rybak 3. Favorite Public Space: Minnehaha Park and Fort Snelling 4. State of the Union Message: "People have to be able to work together. We are so so so much more similar than we are different."
Tom Thomson is one of Canada’s most celebrated artists and cultural icons. However, the events surrounding his tragic death in 1917, at the age of 39, continue to be source of interest and controversy. Was it an accident? Suicide? Or, a conspiracy to hide a grizzly murder? Join us as we chat with distinguished Thomson researcher, Gregory Klages, about his new book, The Many Deaths of Tom Thomson: Separating Fact From Fiction.
The glory days of 2003 when I was going to review every short story that I read and publish it at The Coode Street Review of Science Fiction. Sanity prevailed, but reviews did appear. Thomas Mann referred to Ludwig Klages (1872-1956) as a “criminal philosopher,” a “Pan-Germanist,” “an irrationalist,” a “Tarzan philosopher,” “a cultural pessimist… the voice of the world’s downfall.” Yet, Walter Benjamin urged his friend Gershom Scholem to read Klage’s latest book in 1930, at a time when Klages was increasingly bending his anti-Semitic philosophy of life (Lebensphilosophie) in a political direction. It was, Benjamin wrote, “without a doubt, a great philosophical work, regardless of the context in which the author may be and remain suspect.” Nitzan Lebovic, historian at Lehigh University, has set himself the task of unfolding the ways in which Klages’s philosophy became both an inspiration for Nazi cultural politics and a subterranean source in the history of critical philosophy from Benjamin to Giorgio Agamben. In this podcast, we discuss his book The Philosophy of Life and Death: Ludwig Klages and the Rise of a Nazi Biopolitics (Palgrave Studies in Cultural and Intellectual History, 2013).
