“When I noticed that an educator had expectations for me or wanted me to succeed, or believed that I could succeed, I actually worked harder in those classes. For the educators and teachers who said, ‘I really care about you, I see your potential,' those are the classes I actually worked hard in because I wanted to do it not just for me but for the educators themselves and those who believed in me.” - Justin Black Ever Forward Club's Ashanti Branch is joined by Justin Black. This week's episode is about self-publishing, which we've covered before. But this week's guests have turned the success of their book into a full-time business that's still growing in momentum. In late 2020, Justin and Alexis Black self-published their first book Redefining Normal: How Two Foster Kids Beat The Odds and Discovered Healing, Happiness and Love. Redefining Normal currently has over 200 reviews on Amazon and has sold more than 9,000 copies in the two years since it was published. That's an accomplishment in itself for a title that's kind of categorized as a memoir, where typically unless you're already famous, nobody's buying your memoir. In addition to book sales, Justin and Alexis are also doing workshops, keynote speeches, and other paid gigs related to the content of their book. So, in this episode we're going to dive into everything Justin and Alexis did to set the book up for success, and how you can borrow the same tactics for your own side hustle. Tune in to The Side Hustle Show interview to hear: where the inspiration to write Redefining Normal came from how Justin and Alexis build and used a launch team how they've created several other revenue streams Full show notes

Redefining Normal: How Two Foster Kids Beat The Odds and Discovered Healing, Happiness and Love #RedefiningNormalBook What is it like to grow up in the foster care system? Justin & Alexis share how they found healing, happiness, and love after their childhood experiences with trauma & toxic relationships. "I struggled with anxiety, depression, PTSD. I tried to commit suicide a few times... layers of trauma. It wasn't until I met my foster, now adoptive, parents that I got to start on that healing journey with them. I could go to counseling and actually work on things and not just focus on surviving each day." -Alexis Black Book and Website: Buy their book on their website for 50% off Autographed Copy with Code: 50OFFRN https://www.re-definingnormal.com Social Links: Facebook: @redefiningnormalmovement https://www.facebook.com/redefiningnormalmovement Instagram: @re.definingnormal https://www.instagram.com/re.definingnormal/ ROSE Empowerment Group: https://www.roseempowermentgroup.com https://www.instagram.com/roseempowermentgroup/ Podcast: ROSE From Concrete Podcast https://www.buzzsprout.com/1246289 --- For support, giveaways, and to participate in the #MomentumChallenge, join the Faith Hope Love Women's Community on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/faithhopelovecommunity/ Music: "The Joy" by John Stratton (given permission to use) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yds65yDX0B8 Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/moorefaithhopelove Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/moore.faith.hope.love/ Website: https://www.moorefaithhopelove.com #faith #hope #love #faithhopelove #podcast #bible #biblestudy #therapy #trauma #fostercare This episode was #madeonzencastr

Of all the things we take for granted, parental love is pretty high on the list, and yet few things are as important in setting our expectations and opportunities in life. But what happens when a child can't depend on his or her parents? This is the story of https://www.re-definingnormal.com/about-us (Alexis and Justin Black), two young adults who grew up in the nation's foster care system, and how, as young adults, they have overcome traumas of abandonment, abuse, and neglect to build a more hopeful life together. Alexis (who was my student in AEI's Summer Honors Program) and Justin joined me for this episode of “Hardly Working” to discuss their upbringing; what families, community, and government need to do to better help foster and at-risk youth; and their recent book, “https://www.re-definingnormal.com/ (Redefining Normal: How Two Foster Kids Beat the Odds and Discovered Healing, Happiness, and Love” (Global Perspectives Publishing, 2020)).
