The way I look at it, there are two forces at work to growing a sustainable writing business, or any business for that matter. There are external elements that people see: the websites, the blog, the books, the client conversations, the work you produce, and so forth. But then there is also the internal element—the mental and emotional journey you are taking. When you start taking your business seriously, it feels like the external elements are going to be what make or break you. You think it's all about learning to connect with certain types of people or understanding the craft of writing. But as you get your feet wet and establish yourself a bit, you come to understand that it's really more about the mental and emotional journey you're taking. People typically don't self-destruct because they don't know how to write a book outline or they get something wrong when putting their book on Amazon. They self-destruct because they haven't gotten a handle on their emotional and mental life as a creative and a business owner. That's why I'm honored and excited to have my friend, Chris Morris, as a guest today on the show. He's going to help us navigate some of these issues from the perspective of building our resilience and mental health as writers and business owners. Chris is the author of the excellent new book, Resilient and Redeemed: Lessons About Suicidality and Depression from the Psych Ward. He's written several other books on topics such mental health, faith, and chronic illness. Chris is also the host of the “Resilience and Other Things” podcast. I got to know Chris a number of years ago through my good friend, Jim Woods. I soon discovered that Chris, who is accountant by trade, was not only a thoughtful and kind person, but one of the most gifted writers I know. Let me share a bit about Chris in his own words. This is from the bio section of his website, https://chrismorriswrites.com. He says, “I spend my time writing about how to balance faith and difficult times. I have both mental illnesses and chronic illnesses, but I'm learning to thrive anyway. I've never been good friends with normal, but I'm well-acquainted with disappointment and pain. I guess that's why Redefining Normal is part of the code here, because it's been part of my journey.” Chris and I talk about several topics in this conversation, including: Why writers and creatives often uniquely struggle with mental health. The role that writing has played in his recovery. How he finds resilience in dark times. Practices and routines for staying mentally healthy. His thoughts on publishing pathways for authors. And more! You can check out Chris's books and podcast at https://chrismorriswrites.com. * * * Today's episode is sponsored by Karen Hunsanger, an incredible editor known as “The Word Wizard.” I've worked with Karen many times, and she is your secret weapon for crafting the highest-quality book possible. On today's episode of the "Helping Families Be Happy" podcast, host Dr. Carla Marie Manley, a practicing clinical psychologist, wellness advocate, and author based in Sonoma County, California talks to Justin Black who will talk about his book Redefining Normal: How to Foster Kids Beat the Odds and Discovered Healing Happiness, and Love. Among other things. Justin is an author, serial entrepreneur, and husband. Episode Highlights 01.40: As authors of Redefining Normal we talked about how generational trauma has impacted so much of our lives for our grandparents and for our parents and had a large impact on our life, says Justin. 03:27: It takes intentionality to combat something that is not beneficial for us mentally, spiritually, or physically when are sad and habits that were passed down to us by parents or who are around us that influence over us. 06:31: If you walk into a room and there is like a terrible smell, when you first hit you like, these smells terrible. But if you sit in that room for days or for weeks and you sit for months, you don't even smell anything anymore, says Justin. 06:45: As per Justin people have exercised a lot of unhealthy practices and habits from the generation of domestic violence and drug abuse and really relied on unhealthy habits and substances to really heal us or kind of put a band-aid on the things that they dealt with that were hard in our life. 08.38: Justin had so many amazing mentors and people who were successful around him. In a group home Justin was able to see other successful black men around him and it really changed his perspective. 10:19 Justin talks about his book Redefining Normal: How to Foster Kids Beat the Odds and Discovered Healing Happiness, and Love.  11:05: If a person only sees and experiences so much in their life then a lot of times, they are subjected to living that out, says Justin. 12:48: We continue to tell our family stories and our lives as testimonies on how we can be intentional about breaking generational trauma and barriers, says Justin. 14:23: One of the things that Justin wanted to build on with his young family is trying to make sure our environment is always fun and engaging, no matter the circumstances or situation. We're always engaging. 14:50: Create an environment where we can be open, honest, and loving to each other and have fun. Work on being there for each other as much as we can because you want to be intentional about just nurturing the relationships, creating the atmosphere of playfulness and engagement, says Justin. 19:49: As per Justin when it comes to mental and emotional stress, he and his partner try to do less pushing and less approaches of empathy, because these things are so serious.  21:30: Justin wants to just encourage leaders to love and how love and leadership are interconnected, and can't be separated. You can't love without leadership, and you can't be a leader without love. 3 Key Points Justin's foster experiences weren't necessarily always positive and in fact highly destructive in some ways but his support group, including his church, really gave him guideposts to help him change his life. In his book, Justin says that if you are going for foster care or in circumstances in life that you seemingly are out of control, even if it's just the 1% that you can't control, it can make an impact on how can you do the best with that and how that makes a drastic difference in your life and your future outcomes. Love is about service and not just only receiving. Love is about action and not only feeling and being super intentional around the ideas of love and how we can be super intentional about giving and receiving love. Tweetable Quotes "We are super intentional on how we can build a healthy foundation so we can produce healthy food for our children and those around us." - Justin "We always have choices in life as we can go down a path of least resistance and being our worst selves or something had happened to us that helps us go down a path where we become our best selves." – Carla "Internal locus of control means that wherever I end up in life, the things that I do, I won't blame, or I won't say that my life circumstances will result in other people's actions or won't be other people's fault. It will be on me for my success and my stability." - Justin "I don't think we understand how much of our identity come from two people coming together and deciding to have a child." - Justin Resources Mentioned Helping Families be Happy Podcast Apple Familius.com https://www.re-definingnormal.com/ Podcast Editing

The InPursuit Podcast: Insights from the Education & Workplace Lifecycles

I am honored to have a real changemaker on the show today. Justin Black and his wife Alexis have built a powerhouse movement helping youth and adults alike move past their childhood experiences and trauma to build a better future and life they deserve. It is my pleasure to amplify their story in my chat with Justin this week. Justin Black created the Rising Over Societal Expectations (ROSE) Empowerment Group with a vision to close the information gap for today's generation of Black and Brown young adults after his experiences as a Black male in the foster care system. He has also developed policy recommendations while working with the National Black Child Development Institute resulting in a publication titled The State of the Black Child Report Card: Washington State. Black studied urban and community development as well as a political and economic philosophy in countries such as Rwanda, Uganda, Senegal, and South Korea. In his spare time, Justin loves watching sports and enjoys hot wings. He aspires to challenge and expand the ideologies of how to build prosperous communities through interdependence and entrepreneurship. Alexis Black is a proud foster care alumni. She founded The Scholarship Expert where she authored The Scholarship Blueprint book and workbook along with an online course to assist students in graduating from college debt-free. She is also a foster care advocate working for the National Youth and Transition Database Reviewer. In late 2020, Justin and Alexis Black self-published their first book Redefining Normal: How Two Foster Kids Beat The Odds and Discovered Healing, Happiness and Love. Redefining Normal currently has over 200 reviews on Amazon and has sold more than 9,000 copies in the two years since it was published. That's an accomplishment in itself for a title that's kind of categorized as a memoir, where typically unless you're already famous, nobody's buying your memoir. In addition to book sales, Justin and Alexis are also doing workshops, keynote speeches, and other paid gigs related to the content of their book. So, in this episode we're going to dive into everything Justin and Alexis did to set the book up for success, and how you can borrow the same tactics for your own side hustle. Being healthy spiritually, physically, and mentally doesn't just happen by accident. It takes intentionality in every aspect of life. But sometimes we get so comfortable in unhealth and dysfunction, we don't even realize that what has become normal to us is not in fact normal. It takes a lot of internal work but also a lot of help from those we trust to help us see the things we've become blind to. So, how do we redefine what's normal? Let's talk about it! What are you doing that brings you joy in this season?  We want to hear from you! Text Life in Motion to 23101 and follow the prompts.

Coming up on the one-year anniversary of their Book "Redefining Normal" Justin and Alexis update our audience what they have been up to and what is coming up for them.Growing up, they didn't believe they had a future. Together, they are building forever. Alexis Black was six when her mother died and thirteen when her father went to prison for child endangerment.  After subsequently surviving a long and abusive relationship, the college junior promised her foster parents that she would avoid romantic entanglements for at least a year. But when she met incoming freshman Justin on the first day of their scholarship program, they both felt the world melt away, leaving just the two of them in the room.  Justin Black lived in abandoned houses in the poorest section of Detroit before his parents surrendered him to CPS at the age of nine. He stayed in the child welfare system until he was graduated from high school. Determined to be the first in his family to pursue higher education, Black attended Western Michigan University, where he met beautiful third-year Alexis. At first,  their past traumas--and their age difference--conspired to complicate their attraction. But the joy each took in the other eventually conquered those obstacles, and these two survivors journeyed hand-in-hand toward healing. In their stark and often shocking story,  Alexis and Justin reveal how two people brutalized in childhood managed to defy the odds, get healthy, and build a new life together. Guided by hope and a sense of purpose, as well as a desire to help others who have similarly suffered, they learned to reject the abusive patterns of their past, thereby breaking the cycle of generational violence and neglect.  Written in alternating accounts,  Justin and Alexis offer a thoughtful exchange of ideas and personal experiences illustrating how anybody, no matter their background, can heal and find joy. We talk to them about how they met and started their romantic relationship. They are now working as full-time entrepreneurs. They started an organization called Redefining Normal to talk about mental health boundaries, healthy relationships, definitions of love, community success, and all of the things in the books. They have several workbooks, graphic novels, and other items in the works. It's been quite an unsettling and uncertain time, with COVID-19 impacting eating and drinking behaviors in dramatic ways: In this podcast, our analysts discuss highlights from our ongoing eating occasions research and provide insights on changes in behavior during the 2019 to 2021 time period. Topics discussed include changes in early morning eating occasions, lunch, snacks, eating away from home, use of leftovers (and restaurant food) and interests in premium foods and beverages.  A close parallel to this podcast: Our new report, Redefining Normal: Spring 2021 Eating Occasions, examines how, over a year into the pandemic, consumers continue to seek out certain aspects of “normalcy” in day-to-day eating. However, some behaviors have been and will continue to be impacted by the pandemic, including when we're choosing to eat, where we're eating, who we're eating with, how we're sourcing, and the need states driving our food and beverage occasions. Utilizing The Hartman Group's proprietary Eating Occasions Compass, this report explores American eating and drinking occasions in spring 2021 compared to both the beginning of the pandemic (spring 2020) and pre-pandemic (spring 2019). You can obtain your free copy of Hartman's Redefining Normal: Spring 2021 Eating Occasions report here

In today's episode, our guests are Justin Black and Alexis Black. Justin Black founded Rising Over Societal Expectations (ROSE) Empowerment Group to close the knowledge gap for today's generation of Black and Brown young adults after his experiences as a Black male in the foster care system. Alexis Black is a foster care graduate. She created The Scholarship Specialist and wrote The Scholarship Roadmap book and workbook and an online tutorial to help students graduate from college debt-free. She is now a foster care volunteer and works as a database reviewer for the National Youth and Transition Database. Today, they will share with us what they have gone through in foster care.  [7:45] Why should we listen to you? They should listen to us because everybody has a perspective of the ordinary. And everybody's normal is entirely different. [9:35] What were your experiences like growing in foster care? How we laid out the book was we each wrote our alternating perspectives because even though we are together, we are very much individual people with dreams, goals, and pains. I grew up in an emotionally abusive and toxic environment until I met Justin. That's how our story intertwines together the past that we once experienced when we met in college. [21:00] What was the vision for the book? We originally started the book as more of a selfish project of getting closer together before getting married because the divorce rate is exceptionally high. We're an interracial couple, which makes it more difficult. It was more of a way of getting closer together and making sure that we have everything out there on the table and we're completely vulnerable and open with each other. And that's how we love each other through that process. [25:39] Do you think your past makes it easier to step into certain situations? Absolutely. I always tell people that our past in foster care prepared us to be entrepreneurs. Being a foster parent, you develop the skills of being resilient, flexible, and resourceful. And that's just basic coping mechanisms and survival mode. Having faith in the vision and sees the end goal keeps me going. Of course, having my partner has always encouraged me. [32:02] What promise did God make to the world when He created you? God uses us as messengers, and he gives us promising talents and abilities to solve the problems that the world has created. He gives us his skills and abilities to go into the world and spread His words, His love, and His truth. If we continue to submit ourselves to God and be obedient, then we have the power to solve the issues in His world.  Key Quotes [22:10-22:13] “Sharing your story gives other people the courage to share theirs.” [33:10-33:12] “You have the power to redefine what has been normal to you.” Learn more about Justin & Alexis Black on: Website: https://www.re-definingnormal.com/  Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/redefiningnormalmemoir/  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/re.definingnormal/

In this episode we discuss Redefining Normal. 2:48 Venturing Out So today we're talking about redefining normal and this really was inspired by a conversation we were having. I was mentioning how,  going out into the world now that things are opening up. I mean, they've been opening up for awhile, but I think we've started venturing out more than usual.  KISMA I'd say that's fair.  Nick I even took a trip. I flew across the country, and it was fine, but it's just, it's a little bit sensitive. And so my go-to is like, well, I can just be inside the house and be a hermit and work from there and teach from there and coach from here, you know, like everything. KISMA 3:48 What happens to those three bodies? Many people can resonate with that idea of like, well, let's just stay home and feel all cuddly and cozy and safe and never go out again.  KISMA I think I even more so have that tendency of like being the home body.  Nick Yeah you're more hermity than I am, but I've grown into being quite the hermit over COVID.  KISMA Yeah. I think there's that part of your nature too. That's just like, yeah, we're good. We got everything that we need right here. Nick And we do, I'm so grateful. But then what does that mean for, you know, if we just look at three pieces, your mindset, your physical body and the energy body. If we're not actually out in the world, mindset and you know, emotional body, but if we're not out in the world interacting and being with other humans, what happens to those three bodies? You look at the mental, emotional and the physical and the energy bodies. KISMA 6:40 The inertia sets in So long as you're getting some fresh air and things like that, do all your exercise, you can maintain your body. Like you can do all that stuff. You can maintain a really great immune system in that way and really great health. But you have to make concerted efforts to do it. Well, you know, what we saw over the past year is that certain people did that and certain people didn't. We're not making any of it right or wrong, but you know, people went through their own thing around it and some people got super fired up. We decluttered the whole house. I learned how to cook a lot better, you know, like all sorts of things and, and other people drank a lot and just really kind of closed up in their holes. In TV, again, for all different reasons and we're not making any of it wrong, but that has obviously the physical effect and that inertia sets in. Nick 11:52 Self-trust Not knowing who to trust and that erodes a self-trust. And so now it's like entering back into the world and the trust isn't really there. And I think ultimately, you know, cause I want to give our listeners some tips on how to reboot the whole system so you can have your normal and it's healthy for you. I think self-trust is a really good place to start because if you're not trusting yourself, you won't really know what your true normal is, what a healthy normal is.  KISMA That's right.  Nick So maybe it's spending five to fifteen minutes every day, just kind of anchoring into your core values, your beliefs, whether it's affirmations, whether it's Nick's meditations or my meditations, but to really get centered, you know, for us, it's like, or at least for me, I'd be like connect to Source, connect to God, connect to Universe, remember who you are as this spiritual being, and really bring in that so that you can trust yourself as a human being again, then you can start to trust the world outside or at least trust that you can navigate it. KISMA 16:39 Dysfunction can be very normal I think those are things that are really important. Cause a lot of things are very normal, dysfunction in family is extremely normal. But is that the kind of normal that we want? Nick Exactly.  KISMA And you see it from family to family, like, remember when you were a kid and you know, you do dinner at your house, the way that you do it. And then you go over to your friend's house and it's like radically different. That's like one normal versus another. Nick 18:07 New Normal So when I think about a new normal, I think about it kind of in terms of, well what's really that conducive environment for myself, that's going to help me thrive, help me be more of me and help me do the things that I'm here to do.  Nick That's right. Get to what you want, what you want to do while you're here and create the normal reverse engineer. I like it.  KISMA

Justin & Alexis share how they found healing, happiness, and love after their childhood experiences with trauma & toxic relationships. "I struggled with anxiety, depression, PTSD. I tried to commit suicide a few times... layers of trauma. It wasn't until I met my foster, now adoptive, parents that I got to start on that healing journey with them. Description: Foster youth today face incredible challenges building a stable life when they age out of the child welfare system. Fewer than ten percent ever graduate college, and tragic reports have outlined crises of homelessness and poverty among these young adults. But some foster youth have found healing and restoration through caring foster parents, a deeply embedded sense of personal agency, and connections to strong networks of support. We can learn a lot from the stories of these individuals about how to better serve young adults in foster care as they approach adulthood. In this episode, Naomi and Ian are joined by https://www.re-definingnormal.com/ (Justin and Alexis Black) — Authors and founders of “Redefining Normal.” Alexis and Justin share their story of transformation as they escaped a past of abuse, neglect, and trauma and began to build a future together, with the help of amazing foster parents, a strong faith, and a web of critical supports. Alexis and Justin defied the odds — graduating from college and becoming authors, public speakers, and serial entrepreneurs. Today, they have dedicated their career to building awareness around the challenges foster youth face and advocating for practices and policies that will help foster youth escape the cycle of trauma and find healing. Of all the things we take for granted, parental love is pretty high on the list, and yet few things are as important in setting our expectations and opportunities in life. But what happens when a child can't depend on his or her parents? This is the story of https://www.re-definingnormal.com/about-us (Alexis and Justin Black), two young adults who grew up in the nation's foster care system, and how, as young adults, they have overcome traumas of abandonment, abuse, and neglect to build a more hopeful life together.   Alexis (who was my student in AEI's Summer Honors Program) and Justin joined me for this episode of “Hardly Working” to discuss their upbringing; what families, community, and government need to do to better help foster and at-risk youth; and their recent book, “https://www.re-definingnormal.com/ (Redefining Normal: How Two Foster Kids Beat the Odds and Discovered Healing, Happiness, and Love” (Global Perspectives Publishing, 2020)).

As a young boy you are living in the poorest section of Detroit before your parents surrendered you to the foster care system, you are nine years old. What can you trust when your world flips upside down overnight? In another part of the world, a young woman endures the death of her mother and her step-father's imprisonment. She too will enter the foster parent system. She then escapes a highly abusive relationship. Promising her foster parents not to get involved in dating for awhile, she is off to College. As both enter college, they meet and in spite of all the other students, it is only each other that stand out to the other. This is the true story of Alexis Black and Justin Black and what they had to learn to be able to stay in their relationship. Old learned behaviours from their pasts started to play out in their relationship. Old unconscious patterns threatened all hope for a shared future. This is how two foster kids beat the odds and discovered healing, happiness, and love.

Having once thought, “perhaps this will all blow over,” we are now knee deep in changing family dynamics, changing what it looks like for kids to “go to school” with distance learning, and adults shifting to a more long-term working from home situation. Normal is being redefined. Even still, nearly six months in to COVID-19, things feel raw and exposed. With the end of summer and the beginning of the school year, there is a sense that “I'm not ready.” Maggie named that she is feeling ill-equipped to teach children and also help to them deal with social isolation… Simply put: We are not able to meet all the needs for all the kids.Danielle names there is a hard balance: how do we manage screen time and engage with our kids and work (from home)? We are having to trust our kids lot more and these family dynamics are continuing to develop as we find ways to deal with losses and managing emotions. In the midst of  a continued need for social distancing, how do re-form, or form from for the first time, community? Just how well were we connected before COVID?As we enter into the political season it feels more divided than ever across our nation—people seem to be  lining up to pick sides! We can ask ourselves: How much capacity do I have in this season, in a global pandemic, being maxed out with personal and/or work life, do I have to engage people who aren't like me… or who disagree with me, when I still want to connect and be seen and heard?Danielle says the reality is we just don't want to  know people who are like us and yet we do just want people to know people like us. We want to agree because it feels good. And when we disagree, we aren't just having disagreements [about politics], people believe that these things are connected to the core of who they are.Danielle challenges us as we engage in debate and discourse this political seasons to ask ourselves: Am I in my body? Am I present with what I'm thinking? When you're in your body you have a harder time accusing and dehumanizing another person. Honor humanity by being a human: be in your body. What if I am in my body and my neighbor isn't in their body? Start by asking questions, “You don't seem to be with me right now, where are you?” Start with curiosity. Acknowledge what you see them, it disarms them.If we can have a conversation with someone without being seen and heard, what was the point of the conversation? If someone hears what you said, they're going to remember what you say. They remember it in their bodies, for good or bad.Danielle's tips for engaging with others in this political season who may disagree with you:Practice hospitality to the other person.Offer yourself kindness. — If you're not ready to engage or in a place to engage, then don't.Have self-awareness—what am I feeling? And where am I feeling it in my body?Stay with it: Danielle believes that our culture wants to disconnect from the conversation around race, racism and white supremacy because there is a sense of SHAME. But we need stay with it: take breaks, do work on your own, but then reengage in this important conversation.Don't engage over social media because you remove the human part of being human—our bodies. Our bodies regulate with other bodies. When one person's body is dis-regulated it disrupts other bodies present. Therefore engaging over social media takes away our ability to regulate our bodies.Anger can be arousing and exciting over social media. And yet anger can cause damage that will require repair that you may not be able to over social media. When we enter into a place that requires repair there can be this sense of despair, hopelessness, "this isn't going to get better.”  We need sit in that for moment and mourn. We need to feel the weight of our grief for there can be no movement out of grief without engagement. We must allow space for our anger to transform into grief so that our grief turns to lament and morning which leads to repair and reconciliation and healing. There's been much debate around Abortion / Pro-Life this political cycle and it is not as black and white  as much as we'd like it to be, it's so much more nuanced. There is this sense that if we are supporting the dismantling of systemic racism and white supremacy that somehow we're also supporting abortion. Danielle asks why do you think these two are linked? We can not do “the work” for others. If we give someone the completed work or “the answer,” without the scaffolding, framework and structure, it has no place to land.Maggie talks about story work engagement and how others may be able to “see” clearly what's happening but the person who is sharing does not. To just name or tell them what's happening without building the framework to support that idea, it won't hold and stick for the person.  Danielle says this is why math teachers tell you to “show your work” and not just give the answer. You have to know the steps involved in how and why you got there. When you compare your answer with another person on how you got to a conclusion, you can look and see where things are the same and where they aren't the same and use that as a basis for repair, if needed. We simply need community. We need someone else's eyes and ears, to guide and walk with you. And we can still do that even in COVID. We can still make phone calls, send text messages, have FaceTime/zoom meetings… We still have the ability to connect and reach out. Some ground rules for difficult conversations around politics:Honesty — Honesty requires truth-tellingHonoring Boundaries - honoring the agreed upon time frame or topic of discussionOpenness — Are you willing to really hear another person's point of view?Maggie shared about “My Mouth is a Volcano” children's book she read to her kids about interrupting and honoring other people's important words. We must be wiling to listen. Danielle says we need to watch out for Name Calling, it's a red flag! If you go to name-calling, you have gone off the rails in your conversations/discussion. When you feel yourself slipping into name calling, it's important to reflect on what you're defending. What is hurting that you feel like you want to hurt someone else? You may need to take a break "a grown-up timeout" and reevaluate how to reengage and if repair is needed. Perhaps a therapist is needed. There's no shame in asking for help!We learn and grow experientially. And we do so together. We would love to hear from our listeners! What has been helpful?
