The InPursuit Podcast: Insights from the Education & Workplace Lifecycles

I am honored to have a real changemaker on the show today. Justin Black and his wife Alexis have built a powerhouse movement helping youth and adults alike move past their childhood experiences and trauma to build a better future and life they deserve. It is my pleasure to amplify their story in my chat with Justin this week. Justin Black created the Rising Over Societal Expectations (ROSE) Empowerment Group with a vision to close the information gap for today's generation of Black and Brown young adults after his experiences as a Black male in the foster care system. He has also developed policy recommendations while working with the National Black Child Development Institute resulting in a publication titled The State of the Black Child Report Card: Washington State. Black studied urban and community development as well as a political and economic philosophy in countries such as Rwanda, Uganda, Senegal, and South Korea. In his spare time, Justin loves watching sports and enjoys hot wings. He aspires to challenge and expand the ideologies of how to build prosperous communities through interdependence and entrepreneurship. Alexis Black is a proud foster care alumni. She founded The Scholarship Expert where she authored The Scholarship Blueprint book and workbook along with an online course to assist students in graduating from college debt-free. She is also a foster care advocate working for the National Youth and Transition Database Reviewer. Alexis helps fundraise for programs supporting foster youth such as Hope Pkgs, the Seita Scholars program, and The Nsoro Foundation. She's studied abroad eight times during her undergraduate career in countries such as Hong Kong, South Korea, and South Africa. She also co-developed two study abroad programs. In late 2020, Justin and Alexis Black self-published their first book Redefining Normal: How Two Foster Kids Beat The Odds and Discovered Healing, Happiness and Love. Redefining Normal currently has over 200 reviews on Amazon and has sold more than 9,000 copies in the two years since it was published. That's an accomplishment in itself for a title that's kind of categorized as a memoir, where typically unless you're already famous, nobody's buying your memoir. In addition to book sales, Justin and Alexis are also doing workshops, keynote speeches, and other paid gigs related to the content of their book. So, in this episode we're going to dive into everything Justin and Alexis did to set the book up for success, and how you can borrow the same tactics for your own side hustle. Coming up on the one-year anniversary of their Book "Redefining Normal" Justin and Alexis update our audience what they have been up to and what is coming up for them.Growing up, they didn't believe they had a future. Together, they are building forever. Alexis Black was six when her mother died and thirteen when her father went to prison for child endangerment.  After subsequently surviving a long and abusive relationship, the college junior promised her foster parents that she would avoid romantic entanglements for at least a year. But when she met incoming freshman Justin on the first day of their scholarship program, they both felt the world melt away, leaving just the two of them in the room.  Justin Black lived in abandoned houses in the poorest section of Detroit before his parents surrendered him to CPS at the age of nine. He stayed in the child welfare system until he was graduated from high school. Determined to be the first in his family to pursue higher education, Black attended Western Michigan University, where he met beautiful third-year Alexis. At first,  their past traumas--and their age difference--conspired to complicate their attraction. But the joy each took in the other eventually conquered those obstacles, and these two survivors journeyed hand-in-hand toward healing. In their stark and often shocking story,  Alexis and Justin reveal how two people brutalized in childhood managed to defy the odds, get healthy, and build a new life together. Guided by hope and a sense of purpose, as well as a desire to help others who have similarly suffered, they learned to reject the abusive patterns of their past, thereby breaking the cycle of generational violence and neglect.  Written in alternating accounts,  Justin and Alexis offer a thoughtful exchange of ideas and personal experiences illustrating how anybody, no matter their background, can heal and find joy. We talk to them about how they met and started their romantic relationship. They are now working as full-time entrepreneurs. They started an organization called Redefining Normal to talk about mental health boundaries, healthy relationships, definitions of love, community success, and all of the things in the books. They have several workbooks, graphic novels, and other items in the works. Welcome to Ujana (pron. Oyana) : A Teenager's & Young Adults Journey to Self Love

Today, I have the pleasure and honour to share a space with Justin and Alexis Black, Authors of ‘Redefining normal: How two foster children beat the odds and discovered healing, happiness, and love'. Alexis and Justin both grew up in the foster care system. They met at college on a scholarship program for foster youth At first, their past traumas and their age difference conspired to complicate their attraction. But the joy each took in the other eventually conquered those obstacles. They managed to defy the odds, get healthy, and build a new life together. Guided by hope and a sense of purpose, as well as a desire to help others who have similarly suffered, they learned to reject the abusive patterns of their past, thereby breaking the cycle of generational violence and neglect. Since writing their book, their world has opened up, and are now embracing their entrepreneurial journey, supporting other people in breaking generational patterns and creating a life they would love to live. We talk about and what you will learn: ➤Growing up as a foster child ➤Redefining or retuning yourself ➤Overcoming Trauma ➤Dealing with disconnections and negative emotions ➤ Building healthy relationships ➤Creating your own family ➤Their entrepreneurial journey ➤Their book journey ➤Their internship program Plus much more…… lots of advice throughout. In today's episode, our guests are Justin Black and Alexis Black. Justin Black founded Rising Over Societal Expectations (ROSE) Empowerment Group to close the knowledge gap for today's generation of Black and Brown young adults after his experiences as a Black male in the foster care system. Alexis Black is a foster care graduate. She created The Scholarship Specialist and wrote The Scholarship Roadmap book and workbook and an online tutorial to help students graduate from college debt-free. She is now a foster care volunteer and works as a database reviewer for the National Youth and Transition Database. Today, they will share with us what they have gone through in foster care.  [7:45] Why should we listen to you? They should listen to us because everybody has a perspective of the ordinary. And everybody's normal is entirely different. [9:35] What were your experiences like growing in foster care? How we laid out the book was we each wrote our alternating perspectives because even though we are together, we are very much individual people with dreams, goals, and pains. I grew up in an emotionally abusive and toxic environment until I met Justin. That's how our story intertwines together the past that we once experienced when we met in college. [21:00] What was the vision for the book? We originally started the book as more of a selfish project of getting closer together before getting married because the divorce rate is exceptionally high. We're an interracial couple, which makes it more difficult. It was more of a way of getting closer together and making sure that we have everything out there on the table and we're completely vulnerable and open with each other. And that's how we love each other through that process. [25:39] Do you think your past makes it easier to step into certain situations? Absolutely. I always tell people that our past in foster care prepared us to be entrepreneurs. Being a foster parent, you develop the skills of being resilient, flexible, and resourceful. And that's just basic coping mechanisms and survival mode. Having faith in the vision and sees the end goal keeps me going. Of course, having my partner has always encouraged me. [32:02] What promise did God make to the world when He created you? God uses us as messengers, and he gives us promising talents and abilities to solve the problems that the world has created. He gives us his skills and abilities to go into the world and spread His words, His love, and His truth. If we continue to submit ourselves to God and be obedient, then we have the power to solve the issues in His world.  Key Quotes [22:10-22:13] “Sharing your story gives other people the courage to share theirs.” [33:10-33:12] “You have the power to redefine what has been normal to you.” Learn more about Justin & Alexis Black on: Website: https://www.re-definingnormal.com/  Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/redefiningnormalmemoir/  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/re.definingnormal/

Redefining Normal: How Two Foster Kids Beat The Odds and Discovered Healing, Happiness and Love #RedefiningNormalBook What is it like to grow up in the foster care system? Justin & Alexis share how they found healing, happiness, and love after their childhood experiences with trauma & toxic relationships. "I struggled with anxiety, depression, PTSD. I tried to commit suicide a few times... layers of trauma. It wasn't until I met my foster, now adoptive, parents that I got to start on that healing journey with them. As a young boy you are living in the poorest section of Detroit before your parents surrendered you to the foster care system, you are nine years old. What can you trust when your world flips upside down overnight? In another part of the world, a young woman endures the death of her mother and her step-father's imprisonment. She too will enter the foster parent system. She then escapes a highly abusive relationship. Promising her foster parents not to get involved in dating for awhile, she is off to College. As both enter college, they meet and in spite of all the other students, it is only each other that stand out to the other. This is the true story of Alexis Black and Justin Black and what they had to learn to be able to stay in their relationship. Old learned behaviours from their pasts started to play out in their relationship. Old unconscious patterns threatened all hope for a shared future.
