Jon Cohen on The DJ Sessions presents the Virtual Sessions 1/14/21   About Jon Cohen -   Jon Cohen is a Montreal a musician whose electrifying story songs transport listeners into the dreamlike dance floors of their minds. His soulful tunes are rooted in 90s fuzz-washed art rock, but quickly reach toward the sunshine of hip-shaking electro grooves.    Lorem Ipsum is Cohen's seventh studio release. Recorded almost entirely using an iPhone, the eight tracks take listeners on an inner journey while simultaneously making you want to dance. The album is a melting pot of early 2000 fuzz electronica, from Bonobo to OK GO, Chemical Brothers to Tame Impala.     Cohen collaborated with Montreal luminaries Sabrina Halde of Groenland, Cellist Justin Wright & Lou Laurence of DJ Champion to name a few. The new album was mixed by audio Guru Steven Chouinard (Le Couleur,) and mastered by Richard Addison (Daniel Bélanger, We are Wolves) This album is truly a community.     Jon Cohen has been described as “...like no one else in the Canadian music scene” (Exclaim!). Cohen has played with many great bands including The Dears, Final Flash, JF Robitaille and more. Under his own moniker, Cohen has toured Canada, USA, UK and Europe, as a solo artist and with  band, supporting many noteworthy acts like Rich Aucoin, Dropkick Murphies, Justin Ruthledge, Elephant Stone, Moulettes, Sean Lennon, and playing festivals likeCMW, Pop Montreal, Iceland Airwaves and Sled Island among others. Jon also co-organizes the One Wo/Man Band Festival.    In 2019 the band toured in the UK and eastern Canada in support of their last album, a collection of b-sides entitled 'Songs Only A Mother Could Love'. It’s no enigma why heavyweights like Four Tet and Ben UFO count themselves as fans of East London DJ and producer DJ Champion. The Formula Records head honcho exhibits the unfaltering ability to be any party’s highlight every time he steps behind the decks. “It’s just about the sickest tunes we can play out and put out”, declared Champion as the vision behind his label – a platform that has (pardon the pun) championed the likes of Flava D and Zed Bias – in an interview with London’s fabric nightclub. The same vision drives this 31-minutes-long mix ahead of his India tour in August. Champion wastes no time on anything esoteric, too hard-hitting or too mellow. The selections serve the sole purpose of imparting fun. The same is reflected in the tracklist, as Champion manages to squeeze a huge chunk of his own productions along with undercuts by the likes of Mind Of A Dragon and Wittyboy, within this short mix. Présenté par Trou Du Diable. J’ai reçu dans mon sous-sol le beatmaker / producer de hip hop Québecois, Toast Dawg. J’ai encore eu un problème avec un des micros que je n’utiliserai plus jamais. Le son est un peu wack et en plus la moitié du podcast à été effacé parce que je pense que Garage Band a arrêté tout seul quand il a senti que le micro en question fuckait le chien. Il voulait me protéger, mais il m’a ruiné.  Jusqu’à maintenant les épisodes avec du monde rap sont les plus populaire si on met de coté celui avec Catherine Éthier qui reste encore à ce jour le plus downloadé de Spart 30. Moi et Toast on s’est rencontré il y a longtemps, quand moi j’étais dans Yesterday’s Ring et lui dans Attach Tatuq. J’aimais bien Attach Tatuq et Louis et Beaudet ( et mon frère ) avaient été au Cégep avec eux, alors on avait un genre de lien. On avait joué un bizarre de show organisé par Sirius XM à la SAT dirigé par DJ Champion et on s’est échangé nos vinyles. Deluxxx contre El Rancho. Après j’ai booké un de ses bands de courte durée, Payz Play, quand je travaillais chez Preste. Des fois on se croise backstage dans des trucs et je le gosse depuis un boutte pour qu’il me fasse une toune. Je trippe ben raide sur BROWN, et il est dans le band. Le seul pas dans famille tsé. On a fini par beaucoup parlé de rap et de recording / production. Je suis un grand fan de hip hop et j’aimerais vraiment assisté au processus de writing et recording d’un bon album de rap. Toast lui, aimerait assisté au recording du next Marc Dupré. Il veut voir comment ils font les long reverbs. Sinon on a parlé de réseau sociaux et de modernité. Niveau fast food, il se criss du Harvey’s, aime bien le McDo et semble s’ennuyer de celui Mont-Royal / Papineau comme beaucoup d’autres gens, mais son vrai coup de coeur, ce sont les «  mini cheeseburger » du Nouveau Palais, ceux qui sortent à minuit.  Je lui ai dit que je lui donnerai Hysteria de Def Leppard mais j’ai oublié. L’autre bon album de eux que je parlais c’est Pyromania. Je viens de checker et de 1981 à 1992, leur artworks sont sick. Good job Def. Have fun. Fleischmann's It's All So gets the HSS edit and the beautiful voice of Lisa Gerrard soars with The Secret Language of Angels. Continuing with the vibe we move into a rootsy Hugo rework of Jay Z's 99 Problems and Montreal's Elage Diouf gives his take on a classic. Keb Mo and Michael Franti both wrap up the rootness and Nicolas Jaar takes us back into electronics with some Variations.
