High and Dry: Def Leppard's Gateway from NWOBHM to Arena Rock KingsBefore Hysteria took over MTV and Pyromania lit up the charts, Def Leppard were loud, raw, and hungry. Their 1981 album, High and Dry, was the crucial turning point—bridging the grit of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) with the polished, hook-laden sound that would dominate ‘80s rock radio. But does it get the recognition it deserves? This week, we go deep into Def Leppard's unsung classic—breaking down the ferocious dual-guitar attack, the emergence of the power ballad, and why this album is the missing link between underground metal and stadium rock dominance. If you love AC/DC, Scorpions, Van Halen, or Judas Priest, this episode is for you.

Introducing the Band:Your hosts Scot Bertram (@ScotBertram) and Jeff Blehar (@EsotericCD) are joined by guest Steve Singiser. Steve is formerly a contributing editor at Daily Kos Elections and now is a contributor at The Downballot.Steve's Music Pick: Def LeppardDo you wanna get rocked? If the answer is yes and the decade was the 1980s, it's likely Def Leppard was at least partially responsible for the rocking. With two massive albums released four years apart, the band's songs provided the soundtrack for a generation.Pyromania lit the fuse, so to speak, with “Photograph” bursting through televisions on MTV and with “Foolin'” and “Rock of Ages” cracking the Billboard Top 40 chart. The production skills and songwriting savvy of “Mutt” Lange was key. A de-facto sixth band member, his contributions transformed the group from a solid British hard rock/heavy metal band to one that took over the world with massive pop/rock crossover success. Infinite hooks, layered vocals, processed everything, pre-choruses everywhere -- those are Lange trademarks that helped lure in listeners.Hysteria followed after a number of setbacks and delays. Drummer Rick Allen lost an arm and Lange initially pulled out of the project due to exhaustion. But once things came together, the album took off like a rocket. “Pour Some Sugar on Me” was the jet fuel to power Hysteria after initial just okay sales numbers. Eventually seven singles were released, including #1 hit “Love Bites,” fulfilling the ambitions of creating a hard rock Thriller.Unfortunately, guitarist Steve Clark lost his battle with alcoholism shortly afterward. His songwriting contributions and playing style are missed from future releases, though Vivian Campbell has proven to be a solid replacement. There's plenty to love from the first two albums, prior to the band's breakthrough, and Adrenalize and Euphoria still contain highlights (we urge you to check out “Paper Sun” from the latter album). This is also a story about loyalty. Def Leppard's line-up has been remarkably consistent through the years. When Rick Allen lost his arm, band members gave him the time to recover and learn to play in a different way. When “Mutt” Lange couldn't produce Hysteria, the band realized the project couldn't move forward without him. When Steve Clark needed help, the band gave him time off and got him into rehab as many times as possible. The band still is a huge draw on tour because songs as good as these don't die. Listen in, enjoy the tunes and feel free to rock, rock ‘til you drop.

Hair Metal: The Soundtrack of Suburban Rebellion The term "hair metal" is often loaded with contradictory emotions. For some, it carries a pejorative tone, evoking images of overproduced, superficial music that prioritized style over substance. For others, it symbolizes a golden era of hedonism and carefree excess—a nostalgic portal to the cultural climate of the 1980s. Whether you're a Gen X'er reliving the glory years of 1981-1987 or a Gen Z'er discovering the era's flamboyant spectacle for the first time, hair metal offers an intriguing entry into a bygone cultural zeitgeist. Origins and Influences: A Hybrid of Excess Hair metal is best understood as an amalgamation of diverse influences: the shock rock theatrics of Alice Cooper and KISS, the virtuosic intensity of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM), and the pop hooks reminiscent of 70s classic rock. The genre's genesis can be traced to Los Angeles in the late 1970s and early 1980s, amid the decline of hardcore punk and new wave. Unlike the disaffected rebellion of punk or the cerebral stylings of new wave, hair metal embraced a more commercial, hedonistic ethos that resonated with suburban youth. Key Players and Early Success Van Halen's meteoric rise in the late 70s, driven by Eddie Van Halen's guitar innovation and David Lee Roth's charismatic theatrics, laid much of the groundwork. Yet, it was Quiet Riot that first achieved mainstream success with 1983's Metal Health, the first metal album to reach #1 on the Billboard charts. Their cover of Slade's “Cum on Feel the Noize” exemplified the blend of hard rock bombast and pop sensibility that defined the genre. Simultaneously, Ozzy Osbourne's Blizzard of Ozz (1980) featuring Randy Rhoads, redefined what metal could be—dark and heavy, but also catchy and accessible. This formula of blending metal's aggression with pop hooks became the template for hair metal's commercial domination. The Cultural Politics of Hair Metal Unlike punk's overt challenge to conservative politics, hair metal offered rebellion as a commodified spectacle. It was less about collective resistance to authority and more about personal indulgence. The Reagan and Thatcher years saw the rise of neoliberal individualism, and hair metal became the soundtrack to this ethos: drugs, sex, and flashy excess. Bands like Mötley Crüe, with albums such as Shout at the Devil (1983), exemplified this aesthetic, blending occult imagery with glam decadence. However, by the late 80s, the genre began to cannibalize itself. Bands influenced by early hair metal—such as Poison—were producing sanitized versions of the form. By 1988, hair metal had become a bloated commercial enterprise. Simultaneously, the rise of bands like Guns N' Roses and Faster Pussycat, who rejected the cartoonish glam aesthetic, signaled a shift. Mötley Crüe's 1987 album Girls, Girls, Girls symbolized this transition—gone were the lace and makeup, replaced by leather and a grittier image. The Decline: From Cultural Dominance to Nostalgia The genre's decline was swift, for many hastened by the rise of grunge and alternative rock in the early 90s. While I don't discount the raw authenticity of bands like Nirvana, and how it  stood in stark contrast to the excesses of hair metal; By 1987 most of the “hair metal” songs were pop music with distorted guitars. Def Leppard's 1983 Pyromania was to be their “Thriller”. This was less an authentic genre, and more a media moniker, and everyone with a Marshall stack and hair spray wanted to use that moniker to get in the business.  By the early 90s, the genre was relegated to nostalgia tours and retro compilations, a relic of a pre-grunge world. We covered the big commercial hit album "Brothers In Arms" back in episode 154, but many afficianados of Dire Straits consider their finest work to be the album that preceeded this one.  Love Over Gold is their fourth studio album, released in late September 1982 and on the charts in June 1983.  For this album, prime mover and lead vocalist Mark Knopfler, bassist John Illsley, and percussionist Pick Withers are joined by new members Hal Lindes on guitars and Alan Clark on keyboards.  The songs on this album are longer than your standard single, particularly the majestic 14-minute "Telegraph Road."  Despite their length, "Private Investigations" was released as a single in the UK and reached number 2on the charts.  The shortest song, "Industrial Disease" (still clocking in at 5:50) was released as a single in the US.  It would reach number 75 on the Billboard Hot 100, but would be a staple of rock radio stations at the time.A number of songs were written and recorded during the "Love Over Gold" sessions, but subsequently discarded from album release.  Amongst these was the song "Private Dancer," which was instead provided to Tina Turner for her comeback album of the same name.   Turner would take this song to number 7 on the US charts, and see her career reinvigorated by the success of her "Private Dancer" album."Love Over Gold" was a number 1 album on a number of charts, including Australia, Austria, and the UK, and reached number 19 on the US Billboard 200 albums chart.Rob brings us this outstanding, deep, and thought-provoking album for this week's podcast.Telegraph RoadThis lengthy masterpiece was inspired while Knopfler was riding in his tour bus down the 70-mile road of the same name.  The song narrarates the development and history along the road as the decades roll past.  It is easy to describe this song as prog rock, but it also contains one of the best guitar solo riffs you will hear. Industrial DiseaseGoodness me, goodness me!  We have to highlight the US single from the album.  The title comes from a term for work-related illness, and the term in this song references both individual work illness and the decline of British industry in general.  The reference to Dr. Parkinson is a British professor and satirist who is famous for the phrase "work expands to fill the time available for its completion." ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Overture to the Marriage of Figaro by Mozart (from the motion picture “Trading Places”)Eddie Murphy and Dan Aykroyd star in this comedy about a yuppie and a homeless man who are forced to trade places as the result of a bet by two rich stock brokers.   STAFF PICKS:Murder By Numbers by The PoliceBruce initiates the staff picks with a dark song about becoming a serial killer.  This Police song appears on the cassette and CD version of the album "Synchronicity," but was left off the vinyl due to lack of space.  It was written by Sting and Andy Summers, the only collaborative song on the album, and was recorded in a single take.  Rock of Ages by Def LeppardLynch brings us a huge song from Def Leppard's "Pyromania" album.  Producer Mutt Lange counts off the nonsensical "Gunter Glieben Glauten Globen," to open the song, and the lyrics form an anthem suitable for arena show openers.  Joan Jett's "I Love Rock 'n' Roll" was an inspiration to the creation of this anthem.Don't Pay the Ferryman by Chris deBurghWayne's staff pick takes a fantasy approach to the story of Charon and the crossing of the river Styx, advising not to pay until the trip is done.  Irish artist Chris deBurgh broke into the US top 40 with this song, peaking at number 34.  Lines from Shakespeare's play "The Tempest" can be heard in the bridge to the song. The Walls came Down by The Call Rob finishes the staff picks with a song that is inspired by the Biblical tale of the fall of Jericho.  Lead singer Michael Been would pull biblical references into his lyrics, including this song.  The Call formed in 1980 in California, and blended rock, New Wave, and post-Punk.  U2 and Simple Minds both consider The Call an influence in their music. COMEDY TRACK:My Bologna by "Weird Al" YankovicWe close out with Weird Al's meaty take on "My Sharona by" the Knack. What the Riff?!?
1987 - December: Def Leppard “Hysteria”

What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 5, 2024 43:05

Hysteria is the album that should not exist.  Def Leppard's fourth studio album was plagued with delays and tragedy.  Despite this fact, the album would become one of the greatest heavy metal albums of all time. The band wrapped up their Pyromania tour in early 1984, and started writing their next album shortly thereafter.  Producter John "Mutt" Lange began working with them to arrange the songs, but was suffering from burnout and couldn't commit to producing the album.  Jim Steinman (of Meatloaf's "Bat Out of Hell" fame).  The fit was not good, and the band parted ways with Steinman by the fall.  They began self-producing, but it was slow work.  Then in December tragedy struck, as drummer Rick Allen crashed his Corvette, losing his left arm in the accident.  The band stuck with him as he returned to the drums, using a combination of acoustic and electronic drums and MIDI pedals to trigger sounds for parts ordinarily played with the left arm.  Self-production was continued until Mutt Lange was able to rejoin in mid-1985.  Final recording sessions occurred in early 1987, and the finished product finally was released in August 1987.Def Leppard's goal with the album, was amazingly aggressive:  they wanted to create a rock album similar to Michael Jackson's "Thriller," such that every track on the album could potentially be a hit single.  This goal was largely achieved, as seven of the albums tracks were released as singles, an unpresidented achievement for a rock band at the time.  This would also produce controversy with Def Leppard fans, as the group was perceived by some as selling out to commercial "hair metal" sensitivities popular at the time. Friend of the show Steve Hardin joins us in Bruce's absence, and Lynch brings us this monster album of heavy metal (or hair metal, depending on your perspecitve) for week's podcast. HysteriaThe title track was the fourth single from the album, and the group's first top 10 single in the US.  Drummer Rick Allen came up with the name for this slow rocker.  "'Cause it's a miracle, oh say you will, ooh babe.  Hysteria when you're near."AnimalThis fast paced song was the second release in the US and the first single in the UK where it broke into the top 10.  It was one of the more difficult songs for the group to write, going through multiple iterations with multiple producers before arriving in the style used on the album.RocketThis track was almost created as an instrumental, but morphed into a tribute song, referencing many of the influential groups of the 60's and 70's.  It also features a backwards masking vocal from another song on the album (Gods of War) which says, "we're fighting with the gods of war."  Pour Some Suger On MeOften considered Def Leppard's signature song, this track was a last-minute addition to the album.  It came out of an acoustic jam developed by lead singer Joe Elliott.  Producer Mutt Lange liked the tune and pushed for its development despite the album being behind schedule.  It was created in about 2 weeks, and would reach number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100.   ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:I Get Around by The Beach Boys (from the motion picture “Goor Morning, Vietnam”)This movie starred Robin Williams as an Armed Forces Radio Service DJ who is popular with the troops, but problemmatic to the bureaucrats. STAFF PICKS:Say You Will by ForeignerRob starts the staff pick with a song that hit number 6 on the charts.  Foreigner evolved their sound in the late 80's to meet the aesthetic of the day, with heavier use of the synthesizer and less guitar riffs.  It is the first single from their sixth studio album, "Inside Information."No New Tale to Tell by Love and RocketsWayne's staff pick is an alternative rock sound with an unusual flute instrumentation from a group out of the UK underground.  This was their first US hit, going to number 18 on the US Mainstream Rock chart.  It is from their third album, "Earth, Sun, Moon," and they would release another four albums before breaking up in 1989,Big River by the Beat FarmersFriend of the show Steve Hardin brings an unusual song with a country/rocakabilly slant.  The lyrics discuss following a girl down the Mississippi.Faith by George MichaelLynch finishes the title track from George Michael's debut solo album.  This song with a Bo Diddley beat on an acoustic rhythm guitar went to number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.  Michael wrote the song because he needed faith in his own abilities after leaving the band Wham! to go solo. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Complexity by Front Line AssemblyThis Canadian industrial band released their first full-length album in 1987. Summary: AC/DC's follow-up to Back In Black, 1981's FOR THOSE ABOUT TO ROCK (WE SALUTE YOU), seems to have a heavier, darker, and doomier vibe than its legendary, multi-platinum predecessor. FTATR (WSY) is all about dynamics, as Robert John “Mutt” Lange's production masterfully blends the sounds of Highway To Hell & Back In Black with just a touch of the old school Bon era, resulting in an album that's louder, crispier, crunchier, and overall, pure FIRE! (Not to mention, it's got frickin' cannons on it!). And similarly, as with Back In Black, there is almost an interchangeable quality to it, as you could just as easily listen to Side 2 first and then listen to Side 1 (though, to be fair, Side 2 might actually be better than Side 1).    Always remember that there's no such thing as “fat vampires” and “you can't change your name once people are used to calling you what they're used to calling you”. Get ready to do some “binge listening”, try to avoid doing “all that weird flippity stuff”, be sure to “have a nice June” while you're “rubbing the canyon” and JOIN US as we dive into what may just be the finest album of the Brian Johnson era of AC/DC with FOR THOSE ABOUT TO ROCK (WE SALUTE YOU).   Visit www.metalnerdery.com/podcast for more on this episode Help Support Metal Nerdery https://www.patreon.com/metalnerderypodcast   Leave us a Voicemail to be played on a future episode: 980-666-8182 Metal Nerdery Tees and Hoodies – metalnerdery.com/merch and kindly leave us a review and/or rating on the iTunes/Apple Podcasts - Spotify or your favorite Podcast app Listen on iTunes, Spotify, Podbean, or wherever you get your Podcasts. The influential British shredder talks about how he formed his playing style and demonstrates how to rip one of his most iconic leads. To hear Phil Collen tell it, he joined Def Leppard almost by accident. He had loaned the band one of his amps, and when they asked him to play some leads on their upcoming record Pyromania, Collen thought he was just doing his friends a solid. The rest is history. He and Shifty talk through Collen's formative years on guitar, where he soaked up the scorching playing of classic guitar heroes: Jimmy Page, Ritchie Blackmore, Mick Ronson, Michael Schenker, and John Petrucci all played a hand in Collen's high-flying fretwork. How did Collen fit into the '80s arms race of speedy guitar playing? His participation might have had something to do with Thin Lizzy's Gary Moore. Collen's solo on “Photograph” is a perfect example of the sort of “ear candy” that producer Mutt Lange encouraged the band to chase in the studio—and yes, he did record individual notes to build a single guitar chord on Pyromania. But there weren't many tricks to Collen's sound on the solo. His Ibanez Destroyer and a 50-watt Marshall were all he needed to get the job done for the slick, Johnny Thunders-inspired solo. Tune in to see how he worked that two-piece setup to record one of the most influential guitar solos of the '80s. Click below to subscribe to the podcast! If you thought this episode was going to be all about early Metallica, early Anthrax, or early Slayer, SURPRISE, it's not! While the above bands do in fact belong under the same umbrella, CLASSIC METAL (relative to today's heavy metal landscape) falls right in that sweet spot from the late 70's through the 80's, when hard rock began its transformation into something darker, heavier, and more aggressive than anything before it.    Prepare to brush up on your “ball caller” skills because it's time to “call the balls” for our virtual CLASSIC METAL bingo, where we will address a variety of provocative topics such as “one hit wonders” (both inside and outside of metal), the ongoing debate as to whether or not the Black Cadillac was in fact “slick” or just “big”, as well as “the most popular classic metal song” which still holds up and is just as relevant today as in the CLASSIC METAL days of yore.   Discover which band was formed on Christmas Day 48 years ago, grab some more “boner gum” and bust out your “laser phasers” when you “clear the room” after sharing the details of your “Trans-Siberian” date night experience. Find out what “getting feelings” (down there) from out of nowhere actually means, embrace your middle school metal memories, fire up the “scary devil synthesizer” and JOIN US as we plunge deep into a wellspring of CLASSIC METAL.  Visit www.metalnerdery.com/podcast for more on this episode   Leave us a Voicemail to be played on a future episode: 980-666-8182 Metal Nerdery Tees and Hoodies – metalnerdery.com/merch and kindly leave us a review and/or rating on the iTunes/Apple Podcasts - Spotify or your favorite Podcast app Listen on iTunes, Spotify, Podbean, Google Podcasts or wherever you get your Podcasts. Wildfire season is starting earlier and lasting longer due to global warming across the world. What will we do to save the world on fire? His other books are Rethinking Environmental Security, Anthropocene Geopolitics: Globalization, Security, Sustainability, and Security and Environmental Change. He's co-editor of Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, and Reframing Climate Change: Constructing Ecological Geopolitics."We also need to note most people move locally rather than globally. In the discussions about climate refugees, people are going to be dislocated. There are obviously going to be places that are going to become quite literally uninhabitable because they're too hot and too dry, or they've been flooded so frequently that they're just not sustainable. That said it is also worth pointing out that this climate change process is playing out in a global economy, which is also changing where people live and how people live very rapidly. the migration from rural areas to urban systems has been massive over the last couple of generations.
