When you think of the city Toronto, there are a few names come to mind. Drake... snowd4y................... the rest. But there's one Torontonian that both Drake and snowd4y look up to and respect. One Torontonian that walked, so that Drake could run. One Torontonian that's actually...weirdly connected to Drake... in the sense that his next album is financed by him... That's right. I'm talking about the GOAT of the Toronto Hip Hop scene, K-OS and we're discussing his debut album paradoxically about his EXIT from the music industry. In this episode we ask the former Time Out editor and acclaimed author of fascinating studies of fonts, maps and encyclopaedias about his long writing career; we also discuss semi-colons and listen to clips from audio interviews with Cher and Luther Vandross. Our guest reflects on Expensive Habits — his 1986 investigation of the music industry's "dark side" — and revisits two of his many great pieces: a hilarious 1987 encounter with Guns N' Roses and a 2003 interview with the newly-solo Beyoncé for the Observer Music Monthly. Cher's new autobiography leads to discussion of the singer-actor's remarkable life and work, while the new documentary Luther: Never Too Much prompts thoughts on the sadness of Vandross's double life as a closeted gay man and object of romantic female desire. Among the newly-added library articles we consider, aptly, is Lucy O'Brien's 2001 Q piece "Why Is Pop So Gay?"; we also hear quotes from the late great Eve Babitz's 1979 Rolling Stone celebration of L.A.'s Troubadour club and from Del Cowie's 2009 Exclaim! interview with hip hop elder Big Daddy Kane. Many thanks to special guest Simon Garfield. For more Simon, visit his website at simongarfield.com. Pieces discussed: Guns N' Roses, Cher audio, Beyoncé: Uh-Oh! Uh-Oh! Uh-Oh!, Pete Townshend: Who He Is, Luther Are Good For The Soul, Luther Vandross: Let's Start with Pacman, Luther Vandross: The Sadness Behind the Soul, Shel Talmy, The Good Old Days at L.A.'s Troubadour, Stock Aitken and Waterman, Pet Shop Boys, Why Is Pop So Gay?, Snoop Dogg live and Big Daddy Kane.
Recorded in May and July 2024 at Afterlife Studios in Vancouver, "Graystone" was produced by Brian Minato and the band, with mixing by Dave Ogilivie and mastering by Ronan Chris Murphy at Veneto West. Since their formation in 2012, SLIPons have established themselves as a powerful, guitar-driven band from Vancouver, BC, blending influences from the Exile on Main St. era of the Stones and the Afghan Whigs. With a history marked by acclaim, their last album, "Heavy Machinery," garnered significant attention, spending seven weeks on College Radio across North America and receiving support from impressive broadcasters like KXLU (Los Angeles, CA), WFMU (Jersey City, NJ), WUTK (Knoxville, TN), and WXAV (Chicago, IL), along with coverage from numerous outlets including Global News, True Skateboarding, and Exclaim. As anticipation builds for "Graystone," SLIPons continue to solidify their place in the power-pop and alt-rock landscape. The band plans to complete more recordings and videos in the months ahead and announce North American tour dates for 2024 and 2025. This week on Finding Your Bliss, we have a show devoted to music. Celebrity Interviewer and Bliss Coach Judy Librach is joined by Gregory Childs & Heart Lung who are an alt-country band, converging on the corner where roots meets grunge. The band is led by songwriter Gregory Childs and consists of his wife Velvet Jean as well as a crew of long-time friends (Brent Kervin, Jonathan Billings, Luke Sutherland), who make up the gritty mix of musical accompaniment that includes harmonica, guitars, drums and screams. In October 2020, the band dropped their debut first release, the “Baby Blue” EP, which was distributed both digitally as well as physically, in a limited release of 7” Vinyl. The EP contained two tracks, “Baby Blue” and “Blood Ties,” both of which garnered play on local radio stations, including CIUT 89.5 FM, as well as internationally, on Galaxy FM in Kawerau, New Zealand where it was picked up by local music enthusiasts and broadcast regularly. In 2022, the band released two new singles, “Lonesome” and “From the Chest.” Both were broadcast on numerous radio stations, including multiple shows on CIUT 89.5 FM and NZ's Galaxy 107FM. “From the Chest” reached number six on the Canadian Independent Country Countdown, run by Coyote 103 FM in Sarnia, Ontario. In early 2023, Gregory Childs & Heart Lung were discovered by Alan Cross, who featured the band as an “undiscovered gem,” as part of The Edge 102.1 FM's show, History of New Music. The band was described as “unplugged Nirvana… maybe a little dark Fleetwood Mac”. In 2024, the band was featured by Canadian radio legend Jeff Woods on his Records and Rockstars podcast, the episode aired on April 5th. Throughout the band's existence, they have been regulars in the Toronto music scene, consistently gigging at places like The Dakota Tavern, Cameron House and Kensington Market. They have finished recording a full-length album and have been mixing in preparation for a release in the fall of 2024. The first single from the album, titled “Useless & Young,” was released on January 30th, 2024. She merges the luminosity of pop with brooding shadows of dark drama and orchestral instrumentations. Her anticipated album just dropped in Fall 2024. Lovelee is fierce yet vulnerable with an eccentric persona; draped in lush lyricisms that echo the influences of icons such as Lady Gaga, Halsey, Melanie Martinez, Mitski and the legendary Freddie Mercury. Inspired by life's kaleidoscope, Lovelee writes about the labyrinth of struggles, unraveling tales of self-growth, acceptance, mental health, religion, and heartbreak. “I'm a huge advocate for mental health awareness and believe in the acceptance of all cultures and identities,” she says. Her music helps turn painful experiences into empowering anthems, offering solace to those who find refuge in her art. From an early age, Lovelee has always been obsessed with skulls and the colours black and pink. “”I'm ultimately a storyteller — through music, art, fashion and movement“ she says. A graduate of York University's Music Program, Lovelee holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts, a testament to her dedication to the craft. Having completed Canada's Music Incubator's Artist Entrepreneur Program in 2021, she learned the alchemy of turning her passion into a music career. As an independent artist, she has garnered over 85K streams on music platforms and has graced the stages of events like Breaking Sound Canada, Taste of Asia, and Durham Pride. She has been featured on media outlets like Aesthetic Magazine (Toronto, 2023), Canadian Beats (2023) and Lefuturewave (Netherlands, 2022). As well as playlist features such as CBC Radio, and Exclaim! In addition, she has received notable grants from FACTOR and Ontario Arts Council, which proves that Lovelee is an artistic prowess. Trigger Warning: This episode contains discussions related to sexual assault. We welcome Hanorah to the sleuth to discuss all things anxiety, PTSD, self-love and more! Hanorah is multidisciplinary artist based out of a small studio filled with cats, canvases, and glittered tape recorders in Montreal's west end. With years of touring under her belt (including several television appearances and supporting the likes of Mavis Staples and Lee Fields), she recently took time to plunge back into song writing and forge a new musical direction. What emerged was a collection of songs highlighting the overlap between maturity and the enduring charm of playfulness. Music that journeys through emotions of the past and present, as she blurs the lines between the recurring cycles of time, choice, and circumstance. In short, her first full length album ‘Perennial'. A work packed with soulful ballads and RnB grooves as it digs deeper into Hanorah's musical roots to explore the lush tones and textures of her voice. Influenced by the likes of Etta James and Joni Mitchell, the combination of Hanorah's powerful voice and the vulnerability of her messaging naturally drew her to soul music. Following an early record deal, she released her debut EP ‘For The Good Guys And The Bad Guys' in 2019. The record amassed over a million streams, won her several awards, and helped her tour extensively through Canada and the U.S. In 2022, Hanorah released her debut album Perennial through Ensoul records. In its initial month, the first singles amassed over 50,000 streams on Spotify and 60,000 views on YouTube. The release was met with wide anticipation. It was featured on over 20 radio stations across Canada and multiple spots on editorial playlists through Spotify. Exclaim! Magazine listed the album as a ‘staff pick' for 2022 and she performed several tracks on the hit Quebec TV show Belle et Bum. The band is currently on tour supporting the album, with stops at Liverpool Sound City and Focus Wales in the UK, as well as Los Angeles, CA (Pop Montreal) and Austin, TX (SXSW).
David McPherson is a Waterloo, Ontario-based author, freelance writer, and communications consultant. Ever since attending his first rock concert in 1989 (The Who) and buying his first LP (Freeze Frame by The J. Geils Band), music has become “the elixir of his life.” With more than 18,000 songs on my iPod, and an ever-growing vintage vinyl collection, it's a joy to discover new music; he loves sharing these discoveries with his wife and two children. After watching his first show [The Old 97s] at the Horseshoe Tavern more than twenty years ago, he was in love with this iconic venue. Welcome to another episode of Parents' Rights in Education with your host, Suzanne Gallagher. In our first segment, we're touching base with the state of education around the country. Highlighted events include The Great Northwest Awakening and our regular Zoom calls and trainings - don't miss out! Visit our website for more details. We are also tracking critical legislation like Virginia's SB 1072, aiming to better address bullying, and Texas' controversial SB 14, which deals with youths' access to transgender medical treatment. In organizational updates, we've introduced a new feature to select your affiliate group and celebrate the addition of 5 new affiliate leaders in Oregon and Washington.Returning to our second segment, we've got good news - our movement is making strides! In 2022, 85 parents' rights bills were introduced across 26 states, while 2023 has already seen 62 bills in 24 states. All of these efforts aim to increase parental involvement and transparency in education. This shows we're making an impact and will continue fighting for parents' rights. In our final segment, we delve into a topic of much debate - Comprehensive Sexual Education. Promoted as an inclusive and age-appropriate approach, it is being seen by many as explicit and incentivizing early sexual activity. Organizations like Planned Parenthood, the WHO, and the ACLU are backing this. As an example, programs like EXCLAIM! suggest that young people need varied sexual experiences for their health. This raises concerns about parental involvement and when a child should learn about sexual activity. As we wrap up, remember that joining our cause ensures you have a say in your child's education. Become a member today and join the fight for parents' rights in education. Until next time, stay strong and engaged. Dr. Navneet Singh highlights the latest evidence-based recommendation updates from the ASCO living guideline on stage IV non-small cell lung cancer with driver alterations. This update focuses on new second-line options for patients with advanced NSCLC and an EGFR exon 20 insertion, including amivantamab and mobocertinib. Dr. Singh also discusses updated results from CodeBreaK 200 and the option of second-line therapy with sotorasib for patients with advanced NSCLC and a KRAS-G12C mutation. Read the update, “Therapy for Stage IV Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer With Driver Alterations: ASCO Living Guideline, Version 2023.2” and view all recommendations at www.asco.org/living-guidelines. TRANSCRIPT This guideline, clinical tools, and resources are available at www.asco.org/living-guidelines. Read the full text of the guideline and review authors' disclosures of potential conflicts of interest disclosures in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, https://ascopubs.org/doi/10.1200/JCO.23.01055 Brittany Harvey: Hello and welcome to the ASCO Guidelines podcast, one of ASCO's podcasts delivering timely information to keep you up to date on the latest changes, challenges, and advances in oncology. You can find all the shows, including this one at asco.org/podcasts. My name is Brittany Harvey, and today I am joined by Dr. Navneet Singh from the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research in Chandigarh, India, co-chair on “Therapy for Stage IV Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer with Driver Alterations: ASCO Living Guideline, Version 2023.2.” Thank you for being here, Dr. Singh. Dr. Navneet Singh: Thank you for having me, Brittany. Brittany Harvey: Before we discuss this guideline, I'd like to note that ASCO takes great care in the development of its guidelines and ensuring that the ASCO conflict of interest policy is followed for each guideline. The disclosures of potential conflicts of interest for the Guideline panel, including Dr. Singh, who has joined us here today, are available online with the publication of the guideline in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, which is linked in the show notes. So then, to dive into this living clinical practice guideline, Dr. Singh, this living guideline for systemic therapy for stage IV non-small cell lung cancer with driver alterations is being routinely updated. What new studies were reviewed by the panel to prompt an update to the recommendations in this version? Dr. Navneet Singh: So for this 2023 version 2 update, three trials were included. These include two studies which involved patients with exon 20 insertion mutations, who had received prior platinum-based chemotherapy and subsequently were treated with either amivantamab in the CHRYSALIS trial or with mobocertinib in the EXCLAIM trial. The third trial which formed the basis for this update was one which involved patients with KRAS G12C mutation who had previously received systemic therapy and subsequently were treated with sotorasib. And this was the CodeBreaK 200 trial. Brittany Harvey: Understood. So then, based on these three new trials that you've just mentioned, what are the updated recommendations from the expert panel for patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer? Dr. Navneet Singh: For patients with advanced NSCLC with an EGFR exon 20 insertion mutation and an ECOG performance status of 0 to 2 who have received prior platinum-based chemotherapy, clinicians may offer amivantamab or mobocertinib as monotherapy. It is important to mention here that in the absence of head-to-head comparison of amivantamab or mobocertinib with each other or with other standard second-line therapies, no recommendation for sequencing can be made and therefore treatment should be individualized. Now, use of either of the two drugs is based on low-quality evidence and has a weak strength of recommendation. And the updates for treating KRAS G12C-mutated NSCLC is largely similar; that patients who have received prior systemic therapy may be offered sotorasib. Brittany Harvey: Thank you for reviewing those updated recommendations. So what should clinicians know as they implement these new recommendations and how do they interface with the existing recommendations? Dr. Navneet Singh: It is important for clinicians involved in the management of EGFR mutant lung cancer to realize that exon 20 insertions are the third most common group of EGFR mutations and comprise approximately 5% of all EGFR mutations. Now, historically, the EGFR targeted drugs which have been the first, second, or third generation tyrosine kinase inhibitors have largely shown efficacy for the two common types of EGFR mutations, namely the exon 19 deletions and the exon 21 L858R point mutation. Exon 20 insertion mutations thus did not have any effective targeted therapy so far. But now, both of these drugs, amivantamab and mobocertinib, have shown very promising results for pretreated patients with this molecular aberration and therefore may be used in view of standard second line therapy. Similarly, in the case of KRAS G12C mutation, before this, there was no effective targeted therapy, but now sotorasib, based on the CodeBreaK 200 trial, appears to be a very valid option in view of standard second-line therapy. Brittany Harvey: Excellent. So then, what do these new treatment options mean for patients with stage IV non-small cell lung cancer and an exon 20 insertion or a KRAS G12C mutation? Dr. Navneet Singh: For patients with stage IV NSCLC and harboring an EGFR exon 20 insertion, the availability of two specific targeted drugs will improve the treatment options available following standard first-line therapy. Furthermore, ongoing trials for these agents in the treatment-naive setting may eventually lead to a scenario wherein such patients may be treated upfront with targeted therapy rather than chemotherapy or chemoimmunotherapy, analogous to how patients with the common EGFR mutations are treated. The ultimate aim of precision medicine is to offer the most effective treatment based on biomarker expression and targeted therapies in comparison to chemotherapy because these lead to better treatment outcomes and lesser side effects. Brittany Harvey: Absolutely. The goal of better outcomes with less side effects is what we're looking to achieve here. So then, finally, as this is a living guideline, what emerging therapies or targets is the panel monitoring for future guideline updates? Dr. Navneet Singh: As was already said, the expert panel eagerly awaits data from ongoing trials which are assessing the efficacy of drugs targeting the EGFR exon 20 insertion mutations, namely amivantamab and mobocertinib as first-line therapy, as also the drugs which target the KRAS G12C mutations which is sotorasib and adagrasib in the treatment-naïve setting. Ultimately, the optimal sequencing of therapies needs to be established in advanced and metastatic non-small cell lung cancer for several of the oncogenic driver alterations other than classical EGFR mutations and ALK and ROS-1 rearrangements. These include the EGFR exon 20 insertions and other uncommon EGFR mutations, the BRAF V600E, KRAS G12C, the HER2, and the MET exon 14 skipping mutations as well as the RET and NTRK fusions. Brittany Harvey: It sounds like the living guideline expert panel will be busy moving forward then. So I want to thank you so much for your work to update this living guideline and thank you for your time today, Dr. Singh. Dr. Navneet Singh: Thank you so much, it was a pleasure being here. Brittany Harvey: And thank you to all of our listeners for tuning in to the ASCO Guidelines podcast. To read the full guideline, go to www.asco.org/living-guidelines. Brown was one of the primary singers and songwriters for the alternative rock band Bourbon Tabernacle Choir in the 1980s and 1990s. When that band broke up, he continued performing as a duo with his Bourbon bandmate Kate Fenner. Brown has accompanied dozens of notable musicians on stage, including a six-month stint as a member of Barenaked Ladies in 1998 filling in for Kevin Hearn while Hearn battled leukemia. He is also a social justice activist and the founder of the Pros and Cons Program bringing recording arts to prisons and creating musical works for charities. The Pros and Cons Program has become internationally recognized as groundbreaking in fields of restorative justice and inmate mentorship, with the support of The David Rockefeller Fund. Brown recorded an album with the prisoners called Postcards from the County which Exclaim! described as "inescapably honest and sincere". Brown has recently launched Wolfe Island Records as a home for the prison music and the many artists he produces and collaborates with, including Fenner, Suzanne Jarvie, David Corley, One River, The Mermaids, Hadley McCall Thackston and the Stephen Stanley Band. In 2017 he released a new solo album Pacem. PopMatters premiered his first single, "Keeper of the Flame", and Huffington Post raved that "Pacem is one of those albums that works on the listener from the inside out." Brown currently lives in Wolfe Island where he tours solo and performs with local musicians in a band called Open Hearts Society. Catch Brown Hawkins Stanley on tour this spring! DEBBY FRIDAY - "SO HARD TO TELL" from the 2023 album GOOD LUCK on Sub Pop Nigerian-born, Toronto-based artist DEBBY FRIDAY needed some convincing before designating today's Song of the Day as the lead single from her debut album, GOOD LUCK, released just last week via Sub Pop Records. "Every single person that I would play the album to was like, 'This song, this song, this song, this song — this one has to be the first single!'" she told Exclaim!. It's a surprisingly softer side than we saw on DEBBY's 2019 EP DEATH DRIVE, with a graceful co-production from Graham Walsh (METZ, Holy Fuck). “I have a lower register and speak with vocal fry so I don't know what came over me when I made this track,” she stated in a press release. “I have never in my life sung like this before and I had no idea I could even make these kinds of sounds with my voice. There's no pitch effects on ‘SO HARD TO TELL,' it's all me.” Read the full story at KEXP.orgSupport the show: https://www.kexp.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode of “The Journey of My Mother's Son” podcast, I sit down to talk with Mike McKenna, Jr. Singer-songwriter Mike McKenna Jr. has become a rising star on the Canadian music scene; with a raspy, soulful voice, his warm indie folk and Americana tones, and songs laden with captivating storytelling. Born in Glace Bay and raised along the Mira River, Mike's songwriting aesthetic points heavily to his roots growing up in small-town industrial Cape Breton. Over the course of 3 studio albums, he's brought us the nostalgia of his home through carefully chosen narrative, poetry, protest, and true stories about life and death in Nova Scotia's coastal, working-class communities. Mike's newest record At the Edge of the World (2020) continues to be met with incredible support both in Canada and internationally. In just over a year since its release, Mike's sophomore album has received a long list of awards and nominations; WINNER of the Rising Star Recording of the Year by the 2021 East Coast Music Awards (along with nominations for Contemporary Roots Recording of the Year and Fan's Choice Video of the Year), nominee for Contemporary Album of the Year by the 2021 Canadian Folk Music Awards, nominee for Americana/Bluegrass Recording of the Year by the Music Nova Scotia Awards, and nominee for 2020 Album of the Year by Blues and Roots Radio. It was also listed on the Bluegrass Situation's 'Class of 2020 Playlist, Absolute Best of this Year's Roots Music Releases'. Several songs from the record have received high-profile features and recognition, including Spotify Editorial playlists Renegade Folk and Contemporary Folk, Mahogany Sessions' Acoustic Coffeehouse and Chilled Folk Vol. 3, The Bluegrass Situation's 'Mixtape', Americana UK, Exclaim!, Canadian Beats, Roots Music Canada, The East and many more. Graventowners and Quarter Pounders: Let's put some cheese and sauce on season two and catch the intellectual train to flavour country. With me today is someone who I'd call a musical hero, but he's far too humble and grounded to accept that title. I actually got to open a few shows for him this year when he performed with a trio called Brown Hawkins Stanley, and I had one of the loveliest tour experiences I've ever had - and I get to open for him again this weekend on two dates and I couldn't be more over the musical moon to have him on the pod. Canadian singer-songwriter and guitarist Stephen Stanley is best known from his many years as a founding member, lead guitarist and vocalist with the vibrant alternative rock band The Lowest of the Low. After many song hits, years of touring and sharing the stage with the likes of Billy Bragg, Bob Mould, The Violent Femmes, The Jayhawks and Lloyd Cole, a gold record for their “genuinely timeless album” (Exclaim!) Shakespeare My Butt, Stanley is back on the music scene with his own band, The Stephen Stanley Band, and an internationally acclaimed record Jimmy & The Moon, (2017), produced by Hugh Christopher Brown. Jimmy & The Moon received considerable radio airplay, raves and features from Canada (Now Toronto, Exclaim!, Spill Magazine, Fervor Coulee, FYI Music News, etc.) to the USA, Netherlands, Ireland and the UK. Stephen and I play together this weekend in Toronto and Wolfe Island (show info below). Thank for your listening ears! Graventown is you and me. It's a community. Covid is only part of the problem. For any musical act that hasn't hit 'star' status, the current reality of putting together a tour, and keeping it on the road, is basically a highwire act. And one that can very easily lose money rather than make it.Why is it so tough to perform live music right now? Who's cancelling tours and why? And what happens to Canadian music if only the superstars can afford to show up for the fans? How do artists stay afloat?GUEST: Kyle Mullin, writing in Exclaim

Bruce LaBruce is an internationally acclaimed filmmaker, photographer, writer, and artist based in Toronto. His latest film is "St. Narcisse" a comedy-drama starring Félix-Antoine Duval as a pair of identical twins who were separated at birth and did not previously know of each other's existence, but who fall in love and begin a twincest relationship with each other after being reunited. The film premiered at the Venice Film Festival.LaBruce's earlier film Gerontophilia won the Grand Prix at the Festival du Nouveau Cinema in Montreal in 2013, and Pierrot Lunaire, which won the Teddy Award Special Jury Prize at the Berlinale in 2014. As a visual artist he is represented by Peres Projects in Berlin, and has had numerous gallery shows around the world, the latest of which, called Obscenity, a photography exhibit, caused a national ruckus in Spain in 2011.His feature film L.A. Zombie was notably banned in Australia in 2010 after having been programmed at the Melbourne International Film Festival. It later premiered in competition at the Locarno Film Festival, Switzerland that same year. LaBruce has written and directed three theatrical works at the Hau Theater in Berlin, including a production of Arnold Schoenberg's avant-garde piece Pierrot Lunaire at the legendary Hebbel am Ufer Theater. He adapted the latter project into an experimental film, incorporating footage from the stage production combined with additional material shot on location in Berlin. He has also directed theatrical works at the Theater Neumarkt in Zurich, Switzerland, and he participated as a director in the Hau Theater's ambitious X-Homes project in Johannesburg, South Africa. LaBruce has written a premature memoir called The Reluctant Pornographer, and has had two books published about his work: Ride, Queer, Ride, from Plug-In Gallery in Winnipeg, and Bruce(x)ploitation, a monograph from his Italian distributor, Atlantide Entertainment. LaBruce has contributed to a variety of international magazines, newspapers and websites as both a writer and photographer, including index magazine, for which he also acted as a contributing editor, Vice, The National Post, Purple Fashion, The Guardian UK, and many others. He has also been a regular columnist over the years for Eye, Exclaim! and Vice magazines. Additionally, LaBruce has directed a number of music videos, two of which won him MuchMusic Video Awards in Canada. Most recently, LaBruce has been honoured with film retrospectives at both TIFF/Bell Lightbox 2014, and at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, 2015. The MoMA retrospective featured all nine of LaBruce's features as well as a program of short films. All of the films have now become part of MoMA's permanent film collection.
