Hosts Nate Wilcox & Ryan Harkness continue their discussion of UK dance music in the 1990s with a look at Big Beat. For many Americans Big Beat was the first style of electronic dance music that they saw in concert, purchased on CD or heard in TV ads and movie soundtracks. We discuss this briefly popular genre, how it evolved alongside other genres of EDM in England and it's surprisingly lasting impact. We drew on Rory Hoy's "The Little Big Beat Book" for extra information. Episode 008 of Far East Taste weaves through house and techno with an uplifting touch, moving from soulful piano grooves and disco-tinged edits into deeper melodic layers that balance warmth with forward-driving energy. The journey opens with Alessandro Pierozzi & AKIAL's “Pandem” and U-Jeen & Spectorsonic's vibrant “Madan,” flowing into atmospheric cuts like Eynka's “Narayan” and Roberto Ceratti & JP Graziano's “INNER PIANO.” Standout selections from Duke Dumont, Butch, and The Chemical Brothers are paired with two exclusive originals, “Not The Same” and “Maybe Tonight,” adding a melodic pop edge to the mix. As the energy builds, Latin tech and driving tech house cuts steer the set into peak-time territory, before a bold finale — VIVID & Sesco's “Hey DJ!” at 150 BPM — nods to Tokyo's cutting-edge mainstage techno scene. Recorded in Tokyo, Far East Taste blends underground sensibilities with dancefloor-ready accessibility, delivering a global sound that leaves no energy untapped. ⚡️Like the Show? Is “Let Forever Be” the most British song of the '90s? Diallo and LUXXURY take a closer look at this era-defining track from the Chemical Brothers, where big beat production meets Britpop swagger and Beatles-esque psychedelia. They reflect on their favorite moments from the duo's catalog, wade in Noel Gallagher's introspective lyrics, and explore how the song captures a culture in flux. Lip Biters Sounds is back, and it's pure adrenaline from the first beat to the last drop. We launch with ARTBAT's hypnotic, bass-driven take on Cola before tearing into Ozzy's Crazy Train, flipped into a dancefloor-shaking tribute built for mosh pits under strobes. Mall Grab's remix of Can't Decide keeps the momentum surging, ACID-laced madness from ON 1 twists your senses, and San Pacho's Ride The Train pulls the crowd into full-body movement. Lucas & Steve deliver feel-good euphoria, Floyd West22 drops an unreleased I.D. weapon, and GREG's Pump It Up raises the roof. From Disco Lines to Ultra Naté's iconic Free reimagined, to Biscits, The Chemical Brothers, and Fedde Le Grand igniting the mainstage, this mix is a relentless sprint through tech house, bass house, and pure rave energy. Close it out with PIAI's Devil Doesn't Sleep and you're left breathless, grinning, and craving more. If you're not sweating by the end, you weren't listening loud enough. ⚡️Like the Show? The arena-conquering duo glide from gritty rave to skyscraping arpeggios on RA.1000, a mix many years in the making. A new name undeniably entered the pantheon of major electronic live acts over the past decade: next to Faithless, The Prodigy and The Chemical Brothers, now sit @feelmybicep. The Belfast duo's music doesn't half reach for the stars: a melodic blend of ambient, breakbeat, trance and tech house, able to turn the biggest arenas into intimate affairs. If anything, mainstream success, BRIT Award nominations and mammoth dance crossovers like "Glue" have only hardened Andy Ferguson and Matt McBriar's resolve to keep innovating. Their prized blog, running for nearly as long as the RA Podcast, regularly platforms upcoming artists. And you won't find many festival headliners releasing climate change-themed records with Indigenous artists, as they did recently on Takkuuk. RA.1000 exists in that spirit. After many polite declines, and before a year off to usher in the next era, Bicep come through at the last: from dub techno and screwface breaks to São Paulo garage, before a tide of signature synths floods the zone. Stadium-sized intimacy at its finest. @feelmybicep Find the tracklist and interview at ra.co/podcast/1015. Listen to all RA.1000 mixes, as well as the complete history of the RA Podcast, at 1000.ra.co.

Send us a textThis week, our podcast shines the spotlight on the Female Protagonist, as we continue our "One Last Chance" theme. And so, we watch the 2011 film about the young female assassin, "Hanna," who has one last chance to escape a ruthless intelligence agent trying to track her down across continents. Starring Saoirse Ronan, Eric Bana and Cate Blanchett, this movie has the added bonus of a great score by the Chemical Brothers. We also take a deep dive into what we believe makes a great female protagonist, where writers can fall short, and what exactly a "Mary Sue" is. So listen in, as we toss out our bras, pull on some pants and bust through the glass ceiling of average podcasts.

Richard Fearless is a true lifer. The DJ, producer and Death In Vegas founder sits down with Paul to reflect on 30 years of musical evolution that has taken him from the hugely influential Heavenly Social to Mercury Prize nominations, a top ten hit about a serial killer sung by Iggy Pop to his current creative renaissance, working free from industry bullshit and producing his best work in years,Growing up in remote Zambia with music-loving parents, Fearless recalls connecting with music at an early age. His path would lead through the emerging London techno scene of the late '80s and '90s, where he cut his teeth as a resident DJ alongside contemporaries like Andrew Weatherall and The Chemical Brothers before launching Death in Vegas. The conversation reveals a pivotal moment when commercial success led to a crossroads rather than continued mainstream pursuit. What emerges is the portrait of an artist who deliberately stepped away from major labels, management, and industry expectations to craft a more authentic sonic identity. His riverside studio "The Metal Box" becomes central to this narrative – an analog sanctuary where tape machines, field recordings, and environmental sounds combine to create the stripped-back, trance-inducing techno of his current work. "I make my best music when I'm digging deep within myself," he explains.Perhaps most compelling is Fearless's admission that he feels more proud of his recent, independent work than the commercial hits that brought him fame. His collaborative ventures with friend of Lost and Sound Daniel Avery and new dub-inspired night "Holy" demonstrate an artist still pushing boundaries rather than retreating into nostalgia. "I feel as excited about DJing as I was when I was 20," he confesses, signaling that artistic liberation has reinvigorated his passion.Death Mask by Death In Vegas is out now. Richard Fearless is one of the UKs most enigmatic DJs and Producers and his Death in Vegas project is back with a brand new album 'Death Mask' (their 7th) on Drone Records this June. As a DJ Richard played a pivotal role in some of the countries most forward looking club nights from the infamous Job Club in the early 90s alongside the likes of Claude Young, Dave Angel and Andrew Weatherall to a stint at the controls of The Heavenly Social with the Chemical Brothers and latterly working alongside Daniel Avery at The Pickle Factory's Goo nights. His Dj style is eclectic and visceral with casual disregard for genre specifics Richard developed a gritty style which served him well in terms of setting the tone of his fantastic Death in Vegas project. From the break out success of the seminal track 'Dirge' to the uncompromising sound of the new album 'Death Mask' Richards music is always innovative and excitingly experimental. We are delighted to welcome Richard Fearless of Death in Vegas to the podcast. Before that though, Eamon turns to the digital dark side at last.... Hosted on Acast. Send me a messageAcclaimed mastering engineer Mike Marsh demystifies the final stage of music production in this insightful episode. With a career spanning over three decades, working with artists like Björk, The Chemical Brothers, and Depeche Mode, Mike offers unparalleled expertise on what music mastering is and why it's important. He addresses the common misconception of the "fix it in mastering" mindset, explaining that mastering cannot correct issues that should have been resolved during mixing. This highlights the critical difference between mixing and mastering in music.Mike shares practical music mastering tips for independent artists, emphasising the importance of understanding your listening environment over relying solely on expensive equipment. He notes that some of the best mixes he's received came from modest home studios, underscoring that quality results are achievable without high-end gear. The discussion also covers common mastering mistakes to avoid, such as over-compression and neglecting proper monitoring. Mike weighs in on the debate: Do you need a mastering engineer or can you DIY? He suggests that while self-mastering is possible, a professional's fresh perspective often enhances the final product.Whether you're a seasoned producer or just starting, this episode provides valuable insights to elevate your music's final polish.Links mentioned in this episode:Listen to Half-LifeFollow Mike Marsh Support the showBook your FREE 20 Minute Discovery Call Follow Marc Matthews' Socials:Instagram | YouTube | Synth Music Mastering Thanks for listening!!
Choreographer Sir Wayne McGregor is one of the most acclaimed, innovative and influential figures in contemporary dance. His works are often the result of creative collaborations with artists, musicians, filmmakers, or with scientists to explore technological issues. In 2006 he was appointed as Resident Choreographer at the Royal Ballet. He has created more than 20 new works at Covent Garden in that time, including Chroma, set to music by Joby Talbot and The White Stripes, and Woolf Works, a full-length ballet based on the life and writings of Virginia Woolf. More recently, McGregor brought the post-apocalyptic vision of Margaret Atwood to the stage in his ballet MaddAddam, based on the writer's acclaimed trilogy of novels. He has worked as a movement director on films including Harry Potter Goblet Of Fire and Mary Queen Of Scots, collaborated with bands including Radiohead and Chemical Brothers, and choreographed the virtual concert, ABBA Voyage. In October 2025, Somerset House in London will mount a landmark exhibition dedicated to McGregor's trailblazing collaborations that have radically defined how we think about performance, movement, and the body. Having won numerous awards, including two Oliviers, Sir Wayne McGregor was knighted in 2024.Wayne McGregor talks to John Wilson about his childhood in Stockport, where he took dance classes and was inspired by John Travolta's moves in Saturday Night Fever. He recalls the house and techno music of the late 80s when he was a student, and how the freedom of expression he felt on nightclub dance-floors informed his style of choreography. Whilst living in New York after leaving university, Wayne came across an open-air performance by the legendary American choreographer Merce Cunningham, whose company was dancing to live music conducted by the avant-garde composer John Cage. It was a chance encounter that had a profound impact on McGregor. He also discusses how science and technology has been a major thematic influence on much of his work in recent years, and how AI has been used to create new works through analysis of physical movement and artistic expression.Producer Edwina Pitman

Matt's birthday-inspired journey through debut albums from 1995 reveals the remarkable beginnings of artists who would shape music for decades to come. The mix includes everything from Alanis Morissette's record-breaking "Jagged Little Pill" to Dave Grohl's post-Nirvana reinvention with Foo Fighters. The mid-90s represented a pivotal moment in music history. Grunge was evolving, electronic music was gaining mainstream traction, and powerful female voices were reshaping rock and pop. We dive deep into tracks that showcase these shifts – like Garbage's ironic commentary on angst in "I'm Only Happy When It Rains" and The Chemical Brothers' groundbreaking electronic soundscapes on "Exit Planet Dust."What's particularly striking is how many of these artists continue creating vital music today. Ben Folds, Guster, The Chemical Brothers and others have evolved their sound while maintaining the creative essence first displayed in those 1995 debuts. https://music.apple.com/us/playlist/matt-2025-birthday-mix/pl.u-EPWWTVMmxr1.
