The "I Am" statements are a series of declarations made by Jesus in the Gospel of John which underscore His divine identity and mission. Each of these statements serves not only as a reflection of His nature but also as a way of revealing how He fulfills the spiritual needs of humanity. Jesus wasn't just exercising positive self-talk when He made these bold statements. He was letting the first-century Jews, familiar with God's definition of Himself, know that He truly was God incarnate, the Messiah they were waiting for. It's important to consider that He knew who He was, and He wanted us to clearly know, too. He can't be minimized to merely our “ticket to heaven” but must be seen as our daily sustenance, our direction, our protector, our sacrificial Savior, our victory over death, our access to the Father and eternal life.

Why did Jesus refer to Himself as the door. What does it mean to be saved? When is a person saved? This message is critical for clarity.

"Therefore Jesus said again, “Very truly I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep. All who have come before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep have not listened to them. I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. They will come in and go out, and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full." (John 10:7-10) NIV When Jesus spoke these words, those who listened would have been immediately familiar with the imagery. In today's message, Pastor Phil explores the meaning of these words with historical insight, and preaches on the spiritual message behind the picture being painted. Since Jesus is the Gate for the sheep--and the Shepherd!--and since we who believe on Him are His sheep, then we know that life is better with Him.

Doors and gates are things that we likely don't give much thought to until they are in need of repair—and while the truth is that they are usually constructed to keep people or animals out, they can also certainly be opened to let them in. In this week's message from John 10, Pastor Bryan explains perhaps the most overlooked of Jesus' "I Am" statements: "I am the door." Though most people recognize this as Jesus' claim to be the only way to salvation—and it is—it is also a statement that is far richer and deeper than we may realize. Because while Jesus is indeed the only door to salvation, he is also the door that leads to a flourishing life here on earth.

The homicide was subsequently compared to the murder of Carol Stuart by her husband Charles Stuart, five years earlier in Boston.
