We're returning for our penultimate Hammer Films Dracula feature this month and we aren't with Terence Fisher this week, instead we check out an early director work by the acclaimed cinematogrpaher, Freddie Francis. Last we saw Dracula, his sad-ass fell into some ice. How does he get out of that pickle? Well, a sadder-ass priest slips on some rocks right outside of the castle and bleeds into cracks in the ice which happens to be right over Dracula's mouth. That's more than enough to bring our most tragic fuckboy back into the fold. We're going on about Hammer Film's third Christopher Lee Dracula portrayal in 1968's “DRACULA HAS RISEN FROM THE GRAVE”. Dracula is definitely looking for love and he's found the right girl, but he will have to contend with her Monsignor Uncle and her hunky atheist boyfriend. Will Atheist Paul's experience in dealing with Dracula lead him to to understand that a lifetime of guilt and self loathing is the way to go? Dracula actually might be Catholic if you think about it. He fears the faith just as those within it do. The end is here and the end is near! Welcome to the LATE NIGHT FRIGHT, broadcasting live from WKMF Cozy Corner Public Radio right here in the United States of America. Today is December 28th, 2020 and you are listening to the 197th edition of the only show available on Betamax and Laserdisc. Our month long celebration of the films of Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee concludes with a Christopher Lee solo adventure, 1968's DRACULA HAS RISEN FROM THE GRAVE from the Hammer house of horror. Lee makes his third appearance as Dracula in a film that finds the resurrected count seeking revenge on a monsignor who dared to exorcise his castle. We paired Lee's Dracula film with Universal's 1943 film SON OF DRACULA starring Lon Chaney. The Southern gothic horror flick from the original house of horror is an interesting misfire. Commercials include spots for Gwynnie Goop, lady lawyer, season's greetings from WKMF, Madame Hill's JuJu Emporium and the Kaiju Report with Yoshi Yokohoma. As always, stay tuned for all the fake news not fit to print! email us at latenightfrightpodcast@gmail.com Happy New Year!
Happy holidays and welcome to Cozy Corner! You are listening to THE LATE NIGHT FRIGHT, broadcasting live from WKMF Cozy Corner Public Radio. Thank you all for tuning in, be you a carbon based life form from spaceship Earth, or an astral traveler from a dimension yet to be discovered. Welcome one and all! Tonight's episode is the 196th edition of THE LATE NIGHT FRIGHT and was broadcast on December 21st, 2020. Tonight's episode continues our month long celebration of the films of two of horror's most revered names: Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee. The Hammer house of horror was built on 1957's THE CURSE OF FRANKENSTEIN, starring Cushing as Baron Frankenstein and Lee as the creature, and 1958's DRACULA (released as HORROR OF DRACULA in the United States), which featured Cushing as Dr. Van Helsing and Lee in his iconic role as Count Dracula. Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee would go on to appear in 22 films together and remained the closest of friends for the rest of their lives. Tonight's first film is a 1964 gem from the Hammer house of horror, THE GORGON, an atmospheric creature feature that reunites Cushing and Lee with director Terence Fisher (THE CURSE OF FRANKENSTEIN, DRACULA, THE MUMMY). The film also features Barbara Shelley and an excellent score from James Bernard, who had previously provided the music for both THE CURSE OF FRANKENSTEIN and DRACULA. The next film is HORROR EXPRESS, a British/Spanish production from 1972 that is a riff on John Campbell's classic sci-fi novella WHO GOES THERE, the story that would become the basis for THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD and John Carpenter's 1982 masterpiece THE THING. Tonight's sponsors include Reverend Rieger's Old Time Religion, Cozy Corner After Dark, Junior's Hoedown, and the Church Under The Bridge (located under the bridge downtown). It's pretty simple: there's Dracula, and he rises from the grave and begins terrorizing people. Ashley & Matt discuss this Hammer Horror film from 1968, as 31 Days of Halloween rolls on.
Dracula. The Prince of Darkness. Nosferatu. He's one of the greatest villains in all of cinema and fiction. But did you know he also wrestled in Chile? No, I'm not pulling your fang. Hear about that and more as we examine the wildest depictions of Dracula in pop culture.NOTE: This episode was recorded before the murder of George Floyd, and as such, the tone doesn’t reflect the current climate. We’ll continue to celebrate & promote diversity in voices & creators among the horror community and amplify the deep systemic change that’s so needed in our country. Please sign petitions, donate if you can, protest, anything to make your voices heard. There's always a way to help. We cannot stay quiet. We need reform. Enough is enough. Black Lives Matter.*Early in the show, I incorrectly refer to Dracula Has Risen From The Grave as Dracula Rises From The Grave. I have been tarred and feathered accordingly.**For the curious, this is the video Casey references in the episode. Jim welcomes radio personality Barry King ("B.K. On The Air") as Co-Host. Hammer Film's 1968 classic "Dracula Has Risen From The Grave," starring Christopher Lee, Veronica Carlson, Barry Andrews, Rupert Davies and Directed by Freddie Francis, is in the MA spotlight. This film is considered by many to be the best Christopher Lee Dracula film Hammer produced. And it is all ahead on this episode of Monster Attack.
Three of our Damn Dirty Geeks -- Frank Dietz, Trish Geiger and Scott Weitz -- pay the first of many DDG tributes to the great actor Christopher Lee while discussing one of his most popular Hammer horror films, DRACULA HAS RISEN FROM THE GRAVE, released in 1968. Filled from start to finish with lush color cinematography and surprisingly bloody violence for a G-rated film, DRACULA HAS RISEN FROM THE GRAVE gives Christopher Lee the opportunity to give one of his most menacing, evil portrayals of cinema's favorite vampire villain. Without Van Helsing around to save the villagers, Dracula quickly gets his fill of blood from numerous victims and turns a bevy of Hammer beauties into his fallen minions until the final battle at Dracula's castle. Frank, Trish and Scott reminisce about their own memories of watching Lee as Dracula for our first times, and marvel at his impact on the role's image that previously was so strongly associated with Bela Lugosi in Universal's classic incarnation. Even in this mini-podcast which runs double the normal length of Uncle Ira's Basement episodes, the Geeks talk at length about this film's honored place in the Hammer horror canon and Dracula series, and director Freddie Francis' use of religious imagery (and ample bosoms) to step up Dracula's danger and evil power. While the promotional poster for this film was very much tongue-and-fang-in-cheek, DRACULA HAS RISEN FROM THE GRAVE is still a great example of Christopher Lee's power and talent as an actor and a horror icon.
