Liza is off riding the mountains of Pakistan again, so it's her turn to pick a favorite from the archives, and it doesn't get much better than Debbie Evans Leavitt. She's a 7 time Taurus World Stunt Award winner, she's in the AMA Hall of Fame and the Hollywood Stunt Hall of Fame. She's got almost 400 movie and TV credits to her name, and was also one of the best trials riders in the world. But for us her most notable job has been that of Trinity on the Ducati in Matrix Revolutions which I believe to be the best motorcycle stunt in the movies ever done. Debbie tells us about her dad that got her into riding when she was six, some of the highs and lows of her career, and her whole family that shares in her love of motorcycles and stunts. As player safety continues to be the number one issue in Rugby League today our heroes are buoyed with confidence knowing the NRL will not.... ever.... compromise...... if there's a fire. Our heroes provide the CSA that there has been no crackdown, none...Crackdown here, no... The 18 sin bins last week was the eventuality of an anomaly, which despite our sincerest efforts we have been unable to eliminate from what is otherwise a harmony of mathematical precision. Matrix Revolutions quotes aside, the Grapplers tackle the assertions of the NRL's top dog and turn from admiration to criticism the deeper they delve and separate themselves from comparisons with David Gallop. The player safety focus is challenged by the numbers in the NRL casualty ward and the Rabbitohs being with a 3rd of their top squad riding the pine. Far too much Broncos analysis for one, is never enough for another, as these men offer solutions for Madge's glaring absence of hookers in his squad.Rugby Australia's deal with their new coach is sealed with a Kiss, Joe Schmidt gives the resurgent men in Gold the Long Kiss Goodnight, and the Reds are Kissed on the proverbial to hold on to their coach for another year.Tom Lynagh has not been given the Kiss of Death despite what some outlets are reporting, he's just being rested, and Harry McLaughlin-Phillips is next on Kiss List. With every Kiss pun exhausted our hero's gaze turns to the Subcontinent and the actions of a young man aged between 14 and 34 who became the youngest kid in the IPL to knock a ton and in 35 balls thank you very much.Amazing considering how small the Indian junior base is. NBA, a quick lesson on vice work and a couple of charming dudes who simply want to Grapple.Like it, subscribe to it, share it, dig it.

The Horrifying Reality of THE MATRIX

Does It Fly?

Released in 1999, The Matrix has become a timeless sci-fi classic. Whether it's the groundbreaking visual effects, the positively bonkers action sequences, or the disturbing looks at a world that has been consumed by AI and virtual experiences, there's something that will resonate with just about any member of the audience, even a quarter century after its initial box office success. But there's one moment in particular that perfectly illustrates the true horror at the heart of The Matrix. Since the titular concept of the film can only exist because humans have all been placed in a form of stasis, with their very bodies used to power the machines that now rule the world and create their shared reality, the big reveal of how that works needs to be suitably disturbing. And boy, does it deliver. When Neo (Keanu Reeves) chooses to wake up to actual reality, he's revealed as a hairless body, covered in goo, with feeding and breathing tubes stuffed down his throat. While not quite the iconic moment that the bullet time fights and martial arts sequences are, it might very well be the most powerful moment in the film or its sequels. It's a moment that has stayed with us for over 25 years, which is why today we're asking the question: does the human body really generate enough electrical power to essentially serve as a battery?Take the red pill in the latest episode of Does it Fly? for the answers…https://youtu.be/9e-CZiFpd6oSUGGESTED VIEWING We based the majority of today's discussion just on the first film in the franchise, which is, of course, 1999's The Matrix. If you need a viewing order, it's followed by The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions in 2003. But we've gotta say, you're missing out if you don't check out the bizarre and cool The Animatrix, which fills in a lot of backstory. And count us among the folks who think 2021's The Matrix Resurrections is a much sharper movie than it gets credit for.FURTHER READING Do you want to delve a little deeper into the facts, concepts, and stories Hakeem and Tamara referenced in today's episode? Of course you do! The Simulation ArgumentEver wonder if you're living in a computer simulation? The roots of that argument come from Nick Bostrum and the details on it can be found here. How Much Power Output From Humans?Believe it or not, there have been respectable studies about the potential for the human body to generate power for small devices from everyday activities. A summary can be found here with some more in depth information here. Somewhat related, it's worth considering the difference between the efficiency of solar energy power and the use of power from biofuels. The Matrix Starter PackThere are three books that are key to understanding the themes of The Matrix, and it seems they were required reading on set of the film. They are: Jean Baudrillard's 1981 philosophical treatise Simulacra and Simulation, William Gibson's seminal work of cyberpunk fiction Neuromancer (which has yet to get the screen adaptation it deserves), and 1995's Out of Control by Kevin Kelly.WANT MORE FROM DOES IT FLY?For a more recent take on a sci-fi dystopia, allow us to recommend our Squid Game episode! The disturbing practical effects of the Neo awakening scene does recall some of the more unsettling cyberpunk aspects of RoboCop, which we covered here.FOLLOW US!Stay in the loop! What pill would you take - Blue or Red? Join the Born to Watch team as we follow the white rabbit and discover 'The Matrix" The movie that changed the way movies were made and expanded all our minds, this episode is life-changing.In the realm of groundbreaking cinematic experiences, few films have managed to achieve what "The Matrix" accomplished upon its release in 1999. Directed by the Wachowskis, this science fiction masterpiece not only redefined the genre but also left an indelible mark on popular culture. With its innovative storytelling, mind-bending visuals, and philosophical underpinnings, "The Matrix" continues to captivate audiences and remains a benchmark for futuristic storytelling. At its core, "The Matrix" introduces viewers to a dystopian future where machines have enslaved humanity within an artificial reality called the Matrix. Thomas Anderson (Keanu Reeves), a hacker known as Neo, becomes the film's central character. Plagued by a sense of unease and the feeling that there's more to reality than meets the eye, Neo is eventually contacted by a group of rebels led by Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne), who reveals the shocking truth about the Matrix. What follows is a mind-bending journey as Neo grapples with the concept of reality and his role in the rebellion against the machines."The Matrix" is renowned for its groundbreaking special effects and visually stunning sequences that were, at the time, unparalleled. The film introduced the concept of "bullet time," a visual effect that slowed down time while allowing the camera to move around the action, creating an awe-inspiring sense of fluidity and control over motion. This technique, coupled with meticulously choreographed fight scenes, raised the bar for action sequences in cinema. From the iconic lobby shootout to the thrilling rooftop chase, the film's visual prowess remains a benchmark for the genre.Beneath the surface of its impressive action and visual effects, "The Matrix" delves into profound philosophical themes that have sparked discussions and debates for years. The concept of reality itself is questioned, blurring the lines between the tangible and the virtual. The film draws inspiration from a range of philosophical and religious sources, including Descartes' skepticism and Eastern philosophies. The red pill/blue pill dilemma posed by Morpheus presents a choice that goes beyond Neo's physical reality, forcing audiences to reflect on their own perceptions of the world around them. The characters of "The Matrix" are as memorable as they are complex. Keanu Reeves's portrayal of Neo brings a mix of vulnerability and determination to the role, allowing audiences to connect with his journey of self-discovery. Laurence Fishburne's Morpheus exudes wisdom and unwavering conviction, while Carrie-Anne Moss's Trinity showcases both strength and vulnerability. Hugo Weaving's performance as the enigmatic Agent Smith is nothing short of mesmerizing, creating an antagonist that embodies both cold calculation and subtle menace. The world-building in "The Matrix" is meticulous and immersive. The juxtaposition between the stark, desolate reality of the human world and the artificially constructed Matrix is visually striking. The green-tinted hue of the Matrix scenes becomes a visual motif that reflects the artificiality of the simulated reality. This contrast between the worlds reinforces the central theme of reality versus illusion, grounding the philosophical explorations in tangible visuals."The Matrix" transcended the boundaries of cinema to become a cultural phenomenon. Its iconic imagery, including the distinctive black leather attire worn by the characters, has become synonymous with the film itself. The film's influence extends beyond aesthetics, however. Phrases like "I know kung fu" and "There is no spoon" have woven themselves into popular culture, maintaining their relevance years after the film's release. Moreover, "The Matrix" paved the way for a surge in interest in cyberpunk aesthetics and virtual reality narratives, shaping subsequent films and media. The success of "The Matrix" led to the creation of two sequels, "The Matrix Reloaded" and "The Matrix Revolutions." While these films expanded upon the universe and the philosophical themes introduced in the original, they didn't quite match the impact of the first installment. Nevertheless, the trilogy as a whole maintains a dedicated fan base and continues to be studied and analyzed for its narrative complexity and thought-provoking concepts."The Matrix" remains an enduring masterpiece that defies categorization. Its seamless blend of high-octane action, mind-bending visual effects, and philosophical depth has earned it a place in cinematic history. The film's exploration of reality, identity, and human agency remains as relevant today as it was upon its release, inviting audiences to question the nature of their own existence. Two decades later, Neo's journey from questioning his reality to embracing his role as "The One" continues to resonate, inviting us all to ponder the thin line between what we perceive and what truly is.Please follow the Podcast and join our community at https://linktr.ee/borntowatchpodcast If you are looking to start a podcast and want a host or get guests to pipe in remotely, look no further than Riverside.fmClick the link below https://riverside.fm/?utm_campaign=campaign_1&utm_medium=affiliate&utm_source=rewardful&via=matthew
