Scot and Jeff discuss the first part of XTC's career (1977-1983) with Andrew Gretes. Introducing the Band: Your hosts Scot Bertram (@ScotBertram) and Jeff Blehar (@EsotericCD) with guest Andrew Gretes. Andrew is a fiction writer teaching creative rhetoric at Georgetown and George Washington University. You can find his work at andrewgretes.com. Andrew's Music Pick: XTC There may be no language in our lungs to tell the world just how we feel about this band, but here we give you a three-hour explanation -- with many clips to illustrate where words fail -- why XTC is arguably the great lost group of the rock era. In the early Seventies, in a rural English nowheresville named Swindon, songwriters Andy Partridge and Colin Moulding got together with local drum-thwacker Terry Chambers to form a local trio with decidedly quirky, non-chart sensibilities. Later they were joined by keyboardist Barry Andrews and began to slowly build a national profile in the (by then) post-punk scene. And only slightly later than that, they decided they were interested in developing those chart sensibilities after all -- but without dropping even one bit of their quirk. But the story of this band is best told by their music -- and it's practically criminal that it isn't universally celebrated this world over. A decades-long career filled with nothing but one sparklingly intelligent post-punk and pop gem after another, XTC was always out of step with their times, always resolutely unassimilable to the true mainstream, always just a bit too self-consciously thoughtful. And eventually they made their grudging peace with it, resigned to always be that “great” group that might have scored a hit or two, might have bubbled around the Top 20 every few years or so during the 1980s, but whose impact was heard in the countless subsequent groups they influenced. The story of XTC is a musical tale that will inspire anyone who cares about true songcraft, one filled with immense optimism and joy as well as some of the bitterest sociological observations to be put into British song. Political Beats has been building up to its XTC episodes (this is the first of two) ever since the day the podcast was founded. The second part of their story is every bit as impressive -- and different -- as the first. All hail the amazing crash-boom-band. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. A well-placed song in a film holds the power to shape a viewer's emotions, heighten tension, set the tone, foreshadow events, provide insight into characters, or deepen the narrative. In essence, music is the heartbeat of the cinema that can elevate a film from good to sublime. Take it from someone who knows, like this week's Third Lad, Barry Andrews - he's had songs soundtracking pivotal moments in films such as Manhunter and Band of the Hand. Barry Andrews began his professional music career in the punk era lending his keyboard stylings to a little band that you may have heard of, XTC, giving them one of the most defining and distinctive features of their sound for their first two albums. After leaving XTC in 1979, he released a fine solo EP and single, formed the short lived Restaurant for Dogs, and played with Iggy Pop and Robert Fripp's League of Gentlemen before forming the band Shriekback with Gang of Four bassist Dave Allen and singer Carl Marsh in 1981. For the better part of the last 43 years, Barry has kept Shriekback alive through various incarnations, continuing to release music that's daring, experimental, and artful, as well as maintaining an ambitious and rewarding solo career. “Lived Through That” is the companion podcast to my book where I look at influential musicians of the 80s and 90s and where they are today. On this podcast, we'll delve deeper into a single pivotal moment in the lives of some of the artists I feature in that book, as well as other artists I love and admire. The stories they tell are open, honest, and inspiring. I'm really pleased to have as our guest this week Barry Andrews with a story about quite literally breaking down walls. Barry started off his musical journey as the keyboardist in XTC. He played on their first two records before leaving to start Shriekback with Dave Allen, former bass player for the Gang of Four. Shreikback's best known song might be “My Spine is the Bassline,” but it's their 1985 song “Nemesis” that I feel is a totally underrated track of the 80s and well worth searching out. You can find what Barry's up to on the Shreikback site here. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Barry Andrews, Regina Doherty, Lynn Boylan, and Aodhán Ó Ríordáin have been elected as Dublin's MEPs after a dramatic evening's counting at the RDS. Ciara spoke with Lynn Boylan, Sinn Fein MEP for Dublin, and Cynthia Ní Mhurchú, Fianna Fáil Candidate for the Ireland South constituency, about the results and what's next for the other constituencies.
Hugh Linehan is joined by Jennifer Bray and Cormac McQuinn on day four of the count.Only a handful of seats remain unfilled in the local elections with Fianna Fáil slightly ahead of Fine Gael for the majority of seats. Sinn Féin now has 100 seats which is an improvement on its disastrous 2019 election, however Jennifer Bray has reported on the growing unease within the party over Mary Lou McDonald's leadership after their poor election results. The Dublin count is nearing its moment of truth with Barry Andrews and Regina Doherty looking comfortably in, and the final two seats still to play for. The team discuss the latest results, the possibility of an autumn election and they answer some listener questions. Minutes after recording the podcast, it was announced that outgoing MEP Clare Daly was eliminated following the 17th count of votes in the Dublin constituency. Hosted on Acast. A European candidate for this region has spoken out against the narrative that environmental measures such as the nitrates derogation are anti-farming. It's after the Tánaiste has issued a statement confirming his party is "absolutely committed to applying for and securing the nitrates derogation at European level", following comments made by Fianna Fáil's Barry Andrews which indicated he didn't support the directive. The nitrates derogation allows farmers to farm at a higher stocking level if they take measures to support the environment. Engineer Independent candidate for the Ireland South constituency Christopher V.S. Doyle insists the derogation is intended to support the entire population in the midst of a climate crisis.
