The Spin Chagrin, a concept that finds Frank having to watch a movie he's never seen before based on the random spin of a wheel filled with off-the-wall genres, continues into its fourth year. All the categories are quotables from Frank himself. In this episode, Frank's category was "Black Belt Cop.” For this category, he watched and reviewed three Cynthia Rothrock movies - Martial Law, Martial Law 2, and Yes, Madam.

Lights, Camera, Action! Dive into the World of Spanish Martial Arts Cinema with Nacho Serapio and Alberto Hidalgo. In the latest episode of our podcast, we had the immense pleasure of speaking with two incredible talents from the Spanish film industry, Nacho and Alberto. Both martial arts champions and now rising stars in the world of action cinema, their journeys are nothing short of inspiring. In this awesome episode, Alberto and Nacho talk to Andrew Staton, senior reporter, at the Doncaster UK Martial Arts Show. Nacho's story is one of perseverance and passion. Growing up with a love for action movies and martial arts, he was inspired by legends like Don Wilson and Cynthia Rothrock. His dedication led him to win nine world championships in martial arts, which paved the way for his entry into the film industry. Despite a setback with a broken hand, Nacho channeled his energy into creating his first movie, "Bullets and Katanas." This action comedy features an impressive 50-minute one-take sequence, a testament to Nacho's commitment to delivering an immersive experience. The film has garnered over 20 awards and earned Nacho a place in the Martial Arts Hall of Fame. Alberto's journey is equally compelling. Inspired by Bruce Lee at a young age, he pursued martial arts and acting with unwavering determination. His collaboration with Nacho on "Bullets and Katanas" was a fantastic experience, and it led to Nacho directing Alberto's own film, "Hard Coin." This film blends action, comedy, and a touch of drama, showcasing Alberto's skills both in front of and behind the camera. With six novels to his name, Alberto's storytelling prowess shines through in "Hard Coin," which is set to premiere at the Tag Fest in Toledo. The conversation also touched on the rich history of Spanish stuntmen and their influence on the action film genre. Nacho and Alberto highlighted the contributions of Pedro Conde and Dragon Entertainment, a company that embodies the passion and dedication of Spanish filmmakers. Dragon Magazine, a publication dedicated to martial arts, has been a source of inspiration for many, including our guests. For fans of classic action movies and martial arts, this episode is a must-listen. Nacho and Alberto's stories are a testament to the power of passion and perseverance. Their films, "Bullets and Katanas" and "Hard Coin," are available on Amazon Prime UK and will soon be hitting film festivals and platforms worldwide. Tune in to our latest episode to hear more about their incredible journeys, the making of their films, and their vision for the future of Spanish martial arts cinema. Don't miss out on this action-packed and inspiring conversation! Filmed by Dean Meadows of Pentagram Pictures at the Martial Arts Show Doncaster event 2024 Learn more about your ad choices. We're back from an extended break to give you a real treat. New York Ninja (2021) has everything. A ninja. A roller skating ninja. A radioactive serial killer. Cynthia Rothrock (as a voice). And helicopters. In 1984, John Liu had a dream: to make a movie about a New York ninja. He shot 6-8 hours of footage, but his distribution company went bankrupt so the entire movie was scrapped. Cut to 2020. The new hotshot b-movie home video distributor Vinegar Syndrome unearths these reels with no script, storyboard, or audio track. They get to work basically reimagining the entire plot and restoring the footage. What we have here is a reimagining of what would have been an 80s film, cut, dubbed, and scored in the 2020s. John Liu (John Liu) is a non-ninja New Yorker whose pregnant wife is killed by one of the many roving violence gangs of 1980s New York. In his grief, he becomes a New York Ninja and starts throwing smoke bombs and shurikens at the gangs. It turns out the gangs (but not all of the gangs, some just like to go around smashing cars and murdering orphans) are behind a wide-sweeping human trafficking operation, led by the Plutonium Killer, a former CIA agent with radioactive powers, and hypnotism powers, and shapeshifting powers. He puts young women under a spell and then murders them, which seems like it would cut into his human trafficking bottom line, but I guess we all need hobbies. New York Ninja flips around the city beating up street punks and having guns pulled on him numerous times. Can he save the day and defeat the baddies? Assuming John Liu shot that footage before pulling the plug, the answer is yes.

Send us a Text Message. If you think action movies are all testosterone, think again! We have three movies for you, with ladies kicking some serious butt. You'd better hope that you're not on the wrong side of vengeance, messed with a police officer/martial arts instructor's family, and that you haven't been stealing babies!A child conceived to become an instrument of vengeance? Probably not the best situation to be born into. But she does manage to display some wonderful umbrella sword-related blood spraying and splattering for us. Meiko Kaji IS Lady Snowblood (1973)!An unfortunate mistake causes a martial arts instructor to leave a big city police force, returning to small town Utah, where some rich jerk and his goons are ruining everything. Including eliminating her father, the local sheriff! Can she become the new sheriff, thanks to an emergency election, and make things safe again for the innocent townspeople? Cynthia Rothrock IS China O'Brien (1990)!And then from there, babies are being stolen and taken to the underworld, with one set to become the emperor of China, and the others destined to become evil minions of the Grandmaster! What the hell? Only three women from different perspectives can possibly stop this madness! Maggie Cheung, Michelle Yeoh, and Anita Mui ARE The Heroic Trio (1993)!
This week, we're solving crimes with two ass-kicking chicks, as we watch Michelle Yeoh and Cynthia Rothrock in the 1985 Hong Kong buddy cop movie, Yes, Madam!Join us as we talk about the slapstick, the badass fight scenes, and things that were lost in translation.Find us on Twitter and Instagram @TCTAMPod and on TikTok @theycalledthisamovie.Our theme music was written and performed by Dave Katusa. Welcome to the 80's! We all remember the time: lime green overalls, bolo ties, and dynamite doppelgängers. That's right, Kung Fjune continues with the Hong Kong movie that kicked off the Girls with Guns genre: Corey Yuen's YES, MADAM! from 1985!It was the high-five heard around the world: Michelle Yeoh and Cynthia Rothrock's first starring roles. We're running down just how much these two women could kick one's ass, especially Rothrock's Grand Master status and how she was cooking fools even as a teenager, and take some time to shout out our numerous cameo-filled trios of doofuses.Plus, Nick connects the threads from last episode's Shaw talk on our 36th Chamber episode to YES, MADAM!'s contemporary setting. This movie kicked off a lot of careers, many of which guided the action genre through the next few decades and we're here to celebrate that.Next time we're heading to the 90's for a different side of Hong Kong film: Wong Kar-wei's CHUNGKING EXPRESS!
Roden and Thunder watch a Cynthia Rothrock masterpiece!
We're back after a brief hiatus with another geographically centered mini-series, this time focused on the movies of Hong Kong! And to kick it off, Nick is finally making good on his longstanding threat to talk Shaw Bros: it's Lau Kar-Leung's THE 36TH CHAMBER OF SHAOLIN (1978)!36th Chamber is an enormous tentpole in kung fu film, and one of the first post-Bruce Lee HK movies to break through to international audiences. We're probing into what made it so influential, how it established training tropes, and we opine on why it's a perfect introduction to the genre. We're also talking about Lau Kar-Leung's approach to martial arts as a self-improvement tool, Gordon Liu and Shaw Bros' outsized impact outside of the kung fu world, and the Kill Bill siren. And yes, we mention Bruce Lee.But who are the Shaw Bros exactly? Nick's here with a quick rundown of their history and how there's literally a place called Movietown. We also determine what chambers would absolutely wreck us personally.Next time: we're agreeing with Michelle Yeoh and Cynthia Rothrock in Corey Yuen's YES MADAM (1985)!
Is Scott Adkins the natural successor to Jean-Claude Van Damme? Why did Andrew Koji almost quit acting only months before landing the lead role in the beloved kung fu series, Warrior? And can we expect a rematch between Indonesian action stars Joe Taslim and Iko Uwais? The answers to these questions and many more are revealed in Best of Actors, one of three compilation shows released simultaneously to celebrate the 100th episode of this podcast, which started life back in 2016. Over three episodes, I share some of my favourite conversations recorded over the last eight years of the show. On this episode, you will hear from: Cynthia Rothrock, the undisputed queen of martial arts movies, who discusses her feelings about being a role model for women in action cinema and the martial arts; Andrew Koji, the British actor whose career has gone from strength to strength after securing the lead role in the Warrior TV show, inspired by the writings of Bruce Lee; Scott Adkins, who has made five appearances on the show since its inception, who discusses his career highlights including receiving awards in China from Jackie Chan; Michiko Nishiwaki, the Japanese bodybuilder who became an action star during the golden age of Hong Kong action cinema in the 1980s and 90s; and Joe Taslim, Indonesian judo champion and one of the biggest names in modern martial arts cinema, whose films include The Raid, The Night Comes for Us, and Mortal Kombat. If you enjoyed this 'best of' compilation episode, remember to check out Best of Directors and Best of Stunts, which have also dropped at the same time as this episode. Richard Norton (born 6 January 1950) is an Australian martial artist, actor, stunt performer, stunt coordinator, security consultant, and fight choreographer. He holds a 5th dan black belt in Goju-ryu karate, a 6th dan black belt in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, an 8th dan black belt in Chun Kuk Do, and a level 6 ranking in American Kickboxing. After high school, Norton worked as a bodyguard in the entertainment business before pursuing an acting career. Richard appeared as a bodyguard in the 1977 ABBA movie, as they toured his native country, Australia. He had a very minor speaking part. His first movie screen appearance was in the 1980 Chuck Norris film The Octagon, and he has worked on over 80 feature films and television programs. He appeared in a number of martial arts films, facing off against stars such as Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung, Yasuaki Kurata, Benny Urquidez, Don Wilson and Cynthia Rothrock, and has worked as fight choreographer for titles like The Condemned (2007), Mad Max: Fury Road (2015), Suicide Squad (2016), Dark Phoenix (2019) and The Suicide Squad (2021). With fellow karateka Bob Jones, Norton is the co-creator of Zen Do Kai, a hybrid self-defense martial art intended for the security industry. He is also the head of Richard Norton BJJ.
Vincent Lyn's short career in Hong Kong action movies may only span a few years, but his good looks, martial arts abilities and acting skills saw him work with some of the biggest names in the industry, operating at the height of their powers. The list includes Donnie Yen, Yuen Woo-ping, Corey Yuen, Cynthia Rothrock, Cynthia Khan, Simon Yam, and Jackie Chan. He admits he had no idea that the films he was making would go on to become so influential and cherished by generations of action fans around the world. In fact, given the ad-hoc nature and breakneck speed of Hong Kong filmmaking, he sometimes had very little concept of which film he was working on at any given time, moving from set to set as part of a staple of dependable 'gweilo' fighters who always played the villain, and ultimately got their asses kicked by the lead. His final Hong Kong film role was as the main heavy in the Jackie Chan adventure, 'Armour of God II: Operation Condor' (1991), before he returned to the USA to pursue a multitude of other talents. He became a kung fu instructor (teaching his own family style, Ling Gar Kung Fu), a Grammy Award-nominated musician, a philanthropist and humanitarian. His charity, We Can Save Children, has seen him visit some of the poorest parts of the world in a bid to end the exploitation of children. He can often be found travelling the world, meeting with dignitaries and governments, and talking at the UN. When he's not focused on his charity work, he can be found behind the piano - something he learned from his musical mother at a very young age. Vincent's new immersive album, 'Elysian Eclipse', is available now.LINKSVincent Lyn on IMDb:Vincent Lyn on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/vincent.lyn.50/Vincent Lyn on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/vincent.lyn.50/Vincent Lyn profile on Kung Fu Movie Guide: https://bit.ly/ProfileVincentLynWe Can Save Children website: https://www.wecansavechildren.org/Listen to 'Elysian Eclipse': https://exxeo.xyz/elysian-eclipse/Robert Samuels on the Kung Fu Movie Guide Podcast: https://bit.ly/RobertSamuelsKFMGPod'Tiger Cage' (1988) review on Kung Fu Movie Guide: https://bit.ly/KFMGTigerCage'The Blonde Fury' (1989) review on Kung Fu Movie Guide: https://bit.ly/TheBlondeFury1989'Armour of God II: Operation Condor' (1991) review on Kung Fu Movie Guide: https://bit.ly/ArmourOfGod2 Hosted on Acast.
