Here's an episode that's a switch from our regular programming. On this episode of the Healthcare Education Transformation Podcast, we talk about how using current day popular culture such as Taylor Swift, can help students connect with the material more, to improve their critical thinking, even when they start off being bored with the class. Elizabeth Scala teaches in the English Department and currently runs its Honors Program. She is the Ellen Clayton Garwood Centennial Professor of English Literature. Before arriving at UT, she attended Wellesley College (BA) and Harvard University (MA, PhD) and held a post-doc at the University of Chicago, where she taught in the Freshman Humanities program. Her primary area of research concerns the works of medieval poet, Geoffrey Chaucer, and the textual environments in which his works survive—both manuscripts and early prints. She regularly teaches a course on Chaucer's Canterbury Tales each year. She has also been known to teach classes on Shakespeare, Harry Potter, Food Writing, and the films of Alfred Hitchcock. This is her third year directing the Junior Fellows Program, which she thoroughly enjoys. If you would like to reach out to Dr. Scala, please feel free to do so: Email | Instagram  Dr F Scott Feil is a husband, a father, a physical therapist, a professor, and most recently an Amazon best-selling author. F Scott is also a business coach and mentor despite starting his journey as an English major before landing as a Physical Therapist. He is one of the creators and co-hosts of the Healthcare Education Transformation Podcast which aims to break down the silos between healthcare professions in an attempt to find best practices in teaching and learning throughout healthcare academia. He also hosts the Professors of Profit Podcast where he interviews healthcare professionals about their side gigs and side hustles. His goal is to help at least 222 professors (one from every PT School at the time of publication of his book) and clinicians pay off their student loans quicker and/or more efficiently by using multiple revenue streams. If he helps some others with terminal degrees or other healthcare clinicians along the way, then it's a bonus! He is also the owner of PTEducator.com , FGI Consulting, and Epic Therapy and Wellness. His areas of interest are in the realms of Geriatrics, Service Based Learning, and Business. Who is Elizabeth Scala? Who am I exactly? Well, I am a happily rehabilitated, “Negative Nancy Nurse”. I once was a total mess. A former psychiatric nurse on one of the most acute inpatient units in the state of Maryland, I lived (and worked) too busy, too stressed and too overwhelmed.  And all of that “too much” took a toll on my relationships and my physical, mental, and emotional well-being. That is why I am here- to guide your staff to remember the passion they once felt for their nursing careers. I have been where they are and can reconnect them with their purpose, which ignites job satisfaction, employee morale, and teamwork.
