The Ladder of Divine Ascent - Chapter XXX, Part IV

Philokalia Ministries

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 22, 2024 61:33

As we come to the end of the Ladder of Divine Ascent St. John unfolds for us the heights to which we are drawn – the theological virtues of Faith, Hope and Love. Hope, often the most neglected of virtues, is the annulment of despair. It allows us to hold on to the promise of Christ to be with us always. Even when faith seems to fail us and all grows dark because of the cross that we carry, our hope in the Lord allows us to be consoled by his mercy and to be drawn forward. It protects us from despondency and doubt. Love when unimpeded allows us to see as God sees; to see the signs of the times and how things will unfold even when all seems chaotic. This divine love yields miracles; the supernatural healing and perfecting the natural. Through it we come to see the things of the kingdom with clarity. This clarity creates a fire within the heart; an urgent longing and thirst for the Lord that only he can quench. It is our movement into eternity. It reveals to us that the kingdom is now, heaven is now, eternity is now! We come to see that this love is not distant but that the kingdom dwells within.  St. John closes the step by calling out to Love Himself to satisfy his desire, to show him the path of the ascent that is most direct. For even though he had received this wisdom from others, St. John understands that it is only Love himself who can guide us. It is the experience of this love alone that moves us from words to reality. Finally, St. John exhorts us along with all those who read his book to ascend eagerly and to be resolved in their hearts to strive for the Lord above all things. He is our life, our salvation, our love! --- Text of chat during the group: 00:01:21 Bob Cihak, AZ: My microphone isn't working again but this is probably for the better, because I have a strong head cold with the virus also giving my voice into a gravelly inflection.   Doreen Stacy, our artist friend's funeral was yesterday. Bill Hardwig is a Cormacian scholar & associate professor of English at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, Tennessee. This episode is devoted to the early Appalachian Tennessee novels of the late, great, literary master, Cormac McCarthy [best known for No Country for Old Men, All The Pretty Horses, & The Road]. We begin by defining and discussing the literary genre: the southern gothic. From there we lay out the synopsis & inspiration behind three of Cormac's outstanding southern gothic novels: Child of God about a depraved serial killer roaming the Tennessee hills; Outer Dark about an incestuous brother & sister & their baby that's left for dead; and Suttree, Cormac's first acclaimed masterpiece about a shiftless fisherman living amongst the river & street life of 1950's Knoxville where he befriends the likes of petty-criminals, drunks, vagrants and prostitutes. Throughout we will hear of Cormac's upbringing in Knoxville with tidbits on trapping, taxonomy, hellhounds, regional flora & fauna, a folder of local stories, and city landmarks one can visit from Suttree. Bill reads us two passages to illustrate Cormac's ability to capture the region's voice, and finally, we end on highlighting the importance of ambiguity in great works of fiction. GUEST BIO Scott Okamoto is a former English professor and ex-Evangelical writer, musician, and home chef. His newly released book is called Asian American Apostate: Losing Religion and Finding Myself at an Evangelical University. In the book, Scott tells his story of losing all faith while teaching at an evangelical university. Through this process, he dug deep into his roots as a 4th generation Japanese American and found community, art, music, and a life worth living. Scott also has a podcast called Chapel Probation. Religious Deconstruction - a process in which people re-examine their faith and previously held beliefs, sometimes to the point of leaving the religion. Heart Mountain is a historic site sharing the stories of WW2 Japanese American prisoners. Reparations: $20,000 checks paid in the 1990s to some 82,000 surviving Japanese American individuals who was detained in the camps. Camp residents lost some $400 million in property during their incarceration. MENTIONED TAKEAWAYS Japanese Incarceration Camps are still glossed over in history classes. We need to demand that it be taught like Germany teaches about the Nazis. Many felt embarrassed about their incarceration and tried to be exemplary patriots after their release in order to avoid being sent to camps again. Representation helped many Japanese Americans feel like it was ok to talk about the camps. Redlining and other discriminatory practices affect all of us. You don't win people over with facts and arguments, but by building relationships with them. Many of the views of evangelicals are not actually rooted in the bible. Religious texts are updated by flawed humans. Deconstructing is easier if you have a good support system and community outside of religion. It's Baton Rouge: Out to Lunch

If you've ever dreamed about writing or dabbled in writing then you've probably engaged in that fantasy where Terry Gross or Oprah is interviewing you about your brilliant new best seller or memoir or thriller or screen play. For most of us that's just a day dream. But a rare handful of local writers are actually authors of books with titles published by legitimate publishers. How does this happen? Is there a secret to getting someone to read your manuscript? If a publisher picks it up, does it change your life? Two local authors tell all Michael Rubin is a full-time attorney specializing in appellate law with the high powered McGlinchey firm here in Baton Rouge. He's also a successful author of legal thrillers that, like John Grisham's gripping novels, center on things Mike knows well—the Deep South, racism, family legacies and where the law intersects with the criminal justice system. Mike is the co-author of The Cottoncrest Curse, Cashed Out and A White Hot Plan along with his wife, Ayan. The books are published by LSU Press and the University of Lafayette Press and have earned a handful of book awards. Mike's varied career doesn't end with just the law and writing novels, he's also had stints as a jazz musician, a humorist and a public speaker. Barbara Sims is also an author. Her 2014 book, The Next Elvis: Searching for Stardom at Sun Records, is a memoir of her years working as a publicist and promoter at Sun Records in Memphis in the male-dominated workforce of the 1950s. At the time, Barbara was in her early 20s, and her job at Sun placed her in the studio with the likes of Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis, Charlie Rich and other Sun entertainers. Like Mike, Barbara has had a rich and varied career, and though her time at Sun Records was perhaps the most glamorous and book-worthy chapter, she went on to become an English Professor at LSU here in Baton Rouge, where she taught for more than 30 years. Out to Lunch is recorded live over lunch at Mansurs on the Boulevard. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Obed Silva was born in Chihuahua, Mexico, and grew up in Orange County, California.   Raised by a single mother who was often at work, Obed found comfort in the streets early on in his youth, joining a gang and dropping out of high school at age fourteen. After spending the next few years coming in and out of juvenile institutions, at age seventeen, Obed was shot in the back and left paralyzed from the waist down while participating in a liquor store robbery.  A year later, he found himself in a courtroom facing attempted murder charges for shooting a rival gang member. At the time, he was looking at serving a life sentence in prison. Ultimately, he was sentenced to five years on gang-terms probation. It was during this time that he committed himself to a life of education, earning an associate of arts degree at Cypress College before attending California State University at Los Angeles, where he later earned a bachelor's degree in creative writing and a master's degree in English.   Obed teaches English at East Los Angeles College. The Death of My Father the Pope is the first of his two memoirs to be published. He is currently completing his second memoir, In The Hands of My Mother.
