Sneaker History Podcast - Sneakers, Sneaker Culture and the Business of Footwear
Chris Kaufman co-founded StockX, but this isn't an origin story. We talk about what he learned watching companies destroy culture for quarterly gains, why constant layoffs cost more than just keeping good people, and what leadership actually looks like when you stop pretending you have all the answers. Plus: the Kanye visit, the first StockX trades, and why Detroit was the perfect place to build something weird and new.Chris wrote "Empathy at Work" because he's convinced being decent to people isn't just morally right... it's better business. After this conversation, I think he's right.(This is the first episode of a new/show I'm still naming. Outside The Box? Pursuit of Something? Unplanned Entrepreneur? What if “word is bond” was the operating system for your love life, leadership and legacy? We dive into a raw, funny and deeply honest conversation about building families with intention, founding companies without shortcuts, and protecting your peace while you do both. From the South Bronx to boardrooms, our guest unpacks why he won't have another child before marriage, how age gaps shape values, and why he refuses to force relationships with a partner's kids—yet still shows up as a long‑term “bonus” dad when the bond is real.We pull back the curtain on the CEO myth. There's a world of difference between a hired executive inheriting systems and a founder who starts with none and wears every hat. Expect real talk about quitting high six‑figure roles, investing life savings into a mission, and drawing hard lines around contracts, releases and NDAs to protect intellectual property and sanity. Integrity isn't a slogan here; it's pricing you honour, scope you deliver and deals you walk away from when terms shift. That's how you build a brand people trust. We also get personal about pressure and mental health. Burnout never disappears; it moves. The gym becomes medicine, therapy becomes a goal, and self‑knowledge turns into better matches in life and work. Success gets redefined as time‑rich and health‑first: consolidating five ventures into one, prioritising community, and carving out space to fish, laugh and live. Along the way we celebrate the quiet power of consistency—how showing up, even when no one comments, sets standards others adopt in their homes and companies. If you're navigating love in your 30s and 40s, leading as a founder, or debating a risky leap that looks reckless to everyone else, this conversation will give you clarity, courage and a compass. A joke about silk sheets turns into a sharp, unfiltered dive into how we built a podcast into a real business and why titles don't tell the whole story. We start with the lesson that still echoes: Dr Matthew Knowles' mindset of backing your kids at the highest level and resourcing ambition like it's oxygen. From there, we unpack our own journey—why we treat the show like a company, why clean contracts matter, and how a tough co-host decision protected the brand they've been building brick by brick. We get real about risk. Walking away from high six-figure roles to bet on themselves, not because it was easy, but because staying felt like a slow leak of purpose. If you've ever wondered whether to leave comfort for ownership, you'll hear exactly what shifts when you swap titles for responsibility. We break down the difference between founder-CEOs who wear every hat and hired-CEOs who inherit systems, and why integrity—saying no to a misaligned deal even when the money is good—keeps your reputation compounding. "Word is bond isn't nostalgia; it's our operating system".Pressure never disappears, it just moves lanes. We talk burnout and the gym as therapy, the value of real therapy, and the South Bronx code that shaped his approach to deals and community. We also talk legacy. Fatherhood sits at the center of everything—showing up for sons and for daughters from past relationships—and redefining success as the freedom to choose peace. Five years out, the goal is simple: live well enough to pause, fish, and be present. If you're building a show, a brand, or a business, this conversation gives you a blueprint: focus beats frenzy, contracts protect IP, and integrity scales better than hype. Tap play, then tell us the bold bet you're ready to make. We've talked a lot about AI on the show this year, but this week's conversation might be my favorite take yet... because instead of talking about how to save time or write faster, we're talking about how AI can actually make your work more creative and more personal.I'm joined by Austin-based photographer Jessica Martin, who's using AI in ways that honestly surprised me. She's building tools that help her connect more deeply with her clients; from personalized prompts that make her seniors feel seen to playful ideas that keep family sessions fun and interactive.Jessica shares how she uses ChatGPT to brainstorm and customize ideas, how she turns those digital concepts into real-world client experiences, and why she sees AI as a creative partner rather than a replacement. If you've been curious about AI but aren't sure how to make it feel authentic or human, this episode will show you what's possible when technology supports your imagination instead of competing with it.LINKS:Home of Jessica's photography work, senior prompts, and her upcoming custom GPT project.Follow Jessica on InstagramMonthly Marketing Magic for Photographers: Get your first month of The Consistency Club for just $1Resources: New to the podcast? Joel and Justyna Bedford are photographers whose work feels cinematic, soulful, and quietly rebellious. They've built a career defined by risk, trust, and the courage to do things their own way, without ever waiting for permission. In this conversation, we dig into what it means to see differently in a world that rewards sameness. We talk about the tension between confidence and doubt, how to keep creating when expectations get loud, and why serving your couples with honesty and calm will always outlast trends. From happy accidents that shaped their signature style to the moments that made them question everything, Joel and Justyna share how they've stayed grounded, curious, and kind through it all. Whether you're a photographer, filmmaker, or creative who's ever wondered if you're “doing it right,” this one's a reminder that the best work comes when you stop asking for permission and start trusting what only you can see. When artist Sherrill Roland returned to grad school at University of North Carolina at Greensboro after nearly a year in jail for a crime he didn't commit, he found himself haunted by the invisible weight of his experience. Determined to confront how incarceration had reshaped his body, psyche and place in the world, he — with the encouragement of then-faculty member, artist Sheryl Oring — turned that burden into "The Jumpsuit Project," a performance in which he wore an orange prison uniform on campus every day for a year. The project soon expanded beyond the university to public spaces across the country, where Roland sat inside a 7-by-9-foot square of orange tape, an echo of a prison cell, and invited passersby to step inside and talk with him, transforming uncomfortable encounters into moments of shared reflection and empathy. In the years since, Roland has become one of the most prominent conceptual artists in the South, translating that raw act of endurance into a studio practice that explores the architecture of confinement, the language of data and the humanity hidden within systems of control. His work, which is now in the collections of major museums including the Studio Museum in Harlem and the North Carolina Museum of Art, asks how objects and numbers can embody both memory and freedom. In this interview, Roland speaks about the fear and necessity of donning the orange jumpsuit, the emotional toll of transforming personal pain into public conversation, and how his practice continues to evolve toward accessibility, dialogue and compassion. https://www.sherrillroland.com/Hosted by Ausha.
