I am a creature of habit and often prisoner to my default personality to get things done check things off the list and move onto the next thing. This hustle mentality is as natural as breathing is to me and I have to fight to slow down and smell the roses. I know I am not alone. That's why today's episode invites you to consider reading and writing slooooowly all summer long: less pages read, but more time pondering and fewer pages written, but more time soaking in the insights that appear. This is completely counter to the towering summer TBR and notebook stacks we see on social media, but I say let's topple them down and read them in ways that change us instead of flying through them. It's kind of like that saying: Life isn't about the amount of breaths you take, it's about the number of moments that take your breath away. Reading isn't about the number of books you read, it's about the ways your life changes as a result of reading them. Writing isn't about the number of notebooks you fill, it's about the number of reflections that give you insight into your own life.Today's episode is about giving ourselves permission to read and write slowly this summer. Here's what you'll find once you press play:* Why slow reading and writing are restorative practices.* Permission to finish fewer books and write fewer pages.* What slow writing and writing could look like.* A simple summer reading and writing ritual you can begin today.* A list of summer permissions you may not realize you need.If you've been craving a slower, softer season, this episode is for you!Once you've listened, I'd love to know what slow reading and writing could look like for you and what permissions you're granting yourself this summer. It's time!Let's Work Together!I love to connect with others around our shared love of reading and writing. Here are some ways we can work together to create a life you love where restorative reading and writing is at the center of it all:

Vibe-Coded Catastrophes: Accelerating Intimacy in Digital Apps is Your Security Nightmare

Slick interfaces, instant productivity, and AI platforms that look and feel like they were built by software giants. By all logic, one would logically assume they're making us more secure and professional. Yet, far too frequently, the exact opposite is happening, and we are witnessing the death of the professional "safety floor" in software. The reality is rooted in aesthetic deception. This week, I examine the rise of "vibe-coded" tools built by enthusiasts with professional-grade AI but back-ends held together by digital duct tape. While we have just started getting to the point where people are working to guard against basic data leaks, we're entering the era of application intimacy, granting "always-on" access to our most sensitive digital environments in exchange for minor conveniences. Given that, we have to move beyond basic data security and develop surgical discernment while also removing the bureaucratic friction that forces employees to go rogue in the first place. My goal is to get you off cruise control by highlighting the following opportunities to protect yourself and your organization:Developing Your ROI Smell Test: We've been told that if a product is free, we are the product. But vibe-coded startups are now charging for tools that still harvest your data. You must learn to interrogate the math: if an app promises to fully automate your life for $10, but the compute costs don't add up, your data is subsidizing their business. You cannot blindly trust a paid tier; you must evaluate if the provider has the "chops" and finances to actually protect you. Managing API Intimacy: We've moved from sharing email addresses to granting "API Handshakes". I break down why giving "Read/Write" access to your entire Google, Microsoft, or Slack workspace for a simple summarization tool is a catastrophic trade. You need to audit your persistent permissions this week and stop the "always-on" bridges that allow vulnerable apps to become doors into your entire digital identity. Ending the Shadow IT Insurgency: IT leaders often view employees as "bad actors" bucking the system. I share why Shadow IT is actually a symptom of Friction. If vetting a $10 tool takes three months and a decade of IT experience to navigate, you are the security risk. You must move from the "Department of No" to the "Department of How," streamlining your processes to keep high-performers within your safe ecosystem. By the end, I hope you see that being future-focused isn't about slowing down. It's about having the right strategic friction to keep you from going over the cliff. We can't stop when it comes to technology. Instead, it's about building the partnerships that make innovation safe. ⸻If this conversation helps you think more clearly about the future we're building, make sure to like, share, and subscribe. This week, we present Chris's interview with Brian Schobel, a District Resource Teacher for Transition in Albuquerque, NM. Brian has worked for years supporting transition and employment for people with special needs. Brian reached out to interview Chris about inclusion and how technology can help students of different abilities gain meaningful employment. During the interview, Brian and Chris discuss assistive technology tools that can be used to support students as they transition to employment, as well as areas where we can improve in our support. Brian also shares about using Read & Write by TextHelp himself at work, and why being an assistive technology user inspires Brian to support others who use assistive technology.    Before the interview, Rachel and Chris have an actual in-person banter session at an airport in Minnesota! Rachel and Chris were recently presenting at the PATINS Access to Education conference in Indiana, and they jumped at the opportunity to record a podcast banter while waiting for their next flight. Rachel had two presentations at the PATINS conference. The first presentation was with Elisa Wern and covered using screen recording tools to support students. Elisa compared the tools Screencastify, Screencast-o-matic , and Loom, while Rachel discussed how she uses screen recording for asynchronous learning and coaching. Rachel's second presentation was about on taking a team-based approach to AAC assessment through an abbreviated version of her AAC Ally course (https://rachelmadelslp.thinkific.com/courses/AAC-ally). Chris presented four time at PATINS, including presentations on inclusive coding for robots, ways to enhance AAC implementation, and combining core words with morphemes (e.g. “corephemes”). Chris also did a Wonderfully Inclusive Scavenger Hunt and ran a session where they played Cards against Exclusivity at the conference.   Key ideas this week:

Sophie Salveson survived a stroke at 19. It's not the way any freshman wants to end their first year of college. She was a writer, actor, and singer. The stroke stole her right side limbs, her speech, and her access to language. Over the past 10 years she fought back through PT, OT, speech therapy. She learned to stand, walk and speak again. And she continues to make progress. In the previous episode (http://strokecast.com/ExpandedPractice) I spoke with Marabeth Quinn, Sophie's Mom, and Danielle Stoller, one of Sophie's Physical Therapists. This week, we hear from Sophie and Marabeth and learn more about Sophie's journey. If you don't see the audio player below, visit http://Strokecast.com/Sophie.   Click here for a machine-generated transcript Song Many people with aphasia find it easier to sing than to speak. Early treatment sometimes involves getting folks to sing their name or sing a greeting. Or even sing a song deeply embedded in their memory, like Happy Birthday. It has to do with the way music and song live in different part of the brain. Aphasia isn't the only place music as an impact. In episode 106, I spoke with Brian Harris of Medrhythms about his work using music to bypass limitations of the motor cortex and help people significantly improve their gait. This is an amazing video of Sophie from 2020. You can hear her sing, "A Change in Me" from Beauty and the Beast. Now, I really want to hear Sophie's Eponine. Maggie and Michael Sophie isn't the only stroke survivor with a passion for theater. I talked with Maggie in episode 38. Since then she has acted in a theater company fill with folks with disabilities. She continues to make progress on her documentary, The Great Now What. Here's the trailer: Michael Schutt was on the show in episode 124 talking about creating his solo show to share his stroke story. COVID lock downs meant planned performances didn't happen. He pivoted it into a radio play available on line. You can listen at http://ALessonInSwimming.com. Sophie's Book Recommendations The first book Sophie really read for pleasure after her stroke was "Shatter Me," by Tahereh Mafi.* It came with a powerful endorsement -- her sister's. And connecting about the book with her sister was a powerful incentive to read it, no matter what it took. Sophie's current favorites include "Good Girl's Guide to Murder," by Holly Jackson and "Elsewhere," by Gabrielle Zevin. * Pick up a copy or find them at your library and tell Sophie what you like about her favorites. Hack of the Week Keep trying. Speaking with aphasia is tough, but the only way out is through the key is to keep trying and to keep working on it. I've found it best top to try doing a thing with my affected hand three times before switching to my unaffected side. By trying three times, I'm reminding my brain that my left hand is still there and has a job to do. By stopping after three failed attempts, I stave off frustration and can try again another day.
