Five years have passed since the initial waves of the pandemic, yet the echoes of devastation resonate deeply within Canada's nursing workforce. Burnout remains rampant, exacerbated by chronic understaffing, unsafe patient-to-nurse ratios, and a shocking lack of basic protections against workplace violence. This Nursing Week, the usual calls for celebration ring hollow for many on the frontlines. Instead of accepting platitudes, this episode dives into the stark realities facing nurses across the country. We'll explore why "thank yous" are no longer enough and why this designated week must become a catalyst for meaningful change. Join us as we discuss how nurses, their allies, and the public can leverage Nursing Week as a powerful platform for activism, demanding safe staffing levels, enforceable patient ratios, and tangible measures to ensure the well-being and safety of those who dedicate their lives to caring for others. It's time to move beyond applause and demand the systemic changes our healthcare system – and our nurses – desperately need. Order our Book, The Wisdom Of Nurses! Send us a textA sunburned arm, forgotten Mother's Day acknowledgments, and debates about paper straws might seem like small things, but they're the threads weaving together this wonderfully authentic glimpse into Mac and Kelli's mom-son relationship. Their candid conversation reveals both the friction and fondness that define parent-teen dynamics. After catching up on recent activities—Kelli's completed patio project and Nurses Week celebrations—the pair drift through topics with the comfortable familiarity that regular listeners have come to love. When Kelli gently confronts Mac about not properly acknowledging Mother's Day, we witness Mac's hilariously reluctant attempt to list what he appreciates about his mom: "You're nice... you're funny..." with Kelli prompting, "Keep going, what's great about me?" It's a moment every parent of a teenager will recognize with a knowing smile. The episode takes entertaining turns through their respective entertainment choices (Kelli's book recommendations versus Mac's fascination with "The Walking Dead"), before launching into rapid-fire "hot takes" on everything from the superiority of staying up late to the inferiority of paper straws. Their perspectives sometimes align perfectly and other times reveal generational divides—particularly when discussing whether college is necessary for everyone or if astrology holds any truth.Throughout the conversation, Mac's periodic verbal tic of saying "coping mechanism" adds a layer of endearing quirkiness, while sponsored content about Magic Mind performance shots is woven naturally into their dialogue. The episode concludes with trivia, riddles, and a surprisingly dark "would you rather" scenario that showcases their comfort with hypothetical moral dilemmas.Ready for a refreshingly real podcast that captures the beautiful complexity of family relationships? RaeAnn Tucker from the Henry and Stark County Health Departments joined Wake Up Tri-Counties to talk about health designations as we begin the month of May. Child Mental Health Week is celebrated from May 5th to 11th, 2025, and Nurses Week is celebrated from May 6th to 12th, 2025. Health advocates in Henry and Stark counties are spotlighting children's mental health as part of a national awareness week from May 5th to 11th, underscoring that one in six youth nationwide faces mental illness annually. Limited resources leave many without critical care, so families are urged to seek help early. Alongside this, National Nurses Week runs from May 6th to 12th, honoring nurses' critical roles—from bedside support to community leadership. Meanwhile, Clean Air Month brings a warning about radon dangers, with local data revealing high levels in most Stark County homes. Affordable radon test kits are available for $15 at Health Department offices in Kewanee, Colona, and Toulon.

It feels like only yesterday that workforce challenges were the biggest problem facing the healthcare industry. While COVID-19-related staffing shortages may have declined, an inefficient workforce can still threaten health system operations and finances. Often, systems turn to staffing ratios or benchmarks to determine whether they need more cuts or more hires. However, systems need more than staffing ratios to make sure they have the right headcount and the right expertise in place to safely and effectively care for patients. The question is: if workforce benchmarks aren't enough, then what is? To answer that question, host Rachel (Rae) Woods invites Advisory Board nursing expert Ali Knight to unpack the state of the workforce five years after the peak of COVID-19. Later, Rae brings on Optum Advisory workforce management experts Sherilynn Quist and Anne Schmidt to break down their work in the field, addressing what they call the “blocking and tackling” of workforce efficiency within a hospital. Nurse Jessica and Nurse Erica spent their Nurses Week in Ohio attending the Rally for Ratios and Mental Health, organized by the family of Tristin Kate Smith ('Letter to my Abuser'). They express admiration for Tristin Kate Smith's family for their commitment to improving nursing conditions. They also mention media coverage and unpredictable weather at the rally. Jessica shares personal anecdotes about signs from loved ones in her life and at the rally. Nurses Erica and Jessica discuss their experience, their speeches and the impromptu march that followed. What a great way to wrap up Nurses Week! In the second half of the episode, they talk about the challenges faced by nurses during the cyber attack on Ascension Healthcare, the largest Catholic hospital chain in the US. The attack has allegedly caused system failures, paper charting, and communication issues, allegedly putting patient safety at risk. Ascension's response to the attack has been criticized, and the nurses express their frustration with the lack of support and preparation. The conversation ends with a discussion about the Enema of the Week award. Thank you to our sponsor, Vivian Health! Radio Advisory has commemorated Nurses Week every year since we started production in April 2020. A lot has changed since the early days of the pandemic, but the reality is that we're still grappling with a workforce crisis defined by rising burnout, turnover, and shortages. Celebrating nurses just one week out of the year will not suffice in addressing these complex issues. In this episode, host Rachel (Rae) Woods sits down with Advisory Board nursing experts Monica Westhead, Allyson Paiewonsky, and Ali Knight to discuss why the industry needs to pivot towards more sustainable strategies for their care teams, what leaders should be thinking about when training and supporting nurses, and why "top-of-license care" is an incomplete solution. For the past few years, Nurse.org has released its annual State of Nursing report, looking at various trends in nursing, including salary, career goals, and what nurses think about the future of their profession. In the past, the reports revealed some eye-opening information, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. With the arrival of Nurses Week—a time when healthcare institutions and other healthcare professionals are celebrating nurses —we wanted to go beyond celebrations and shed some light on the real issues nurses face every day. Our survey found that, overall, nurses' conditions have improved since previous reports in 2021 and 2022. But despite this, the nursing profession still has a very long way to go.In this episode of the Nurse Converse Podcast, Dr. Wali Khan and Dr. Tina Loarte-Rodriguez discuss the 2024 State of Nursing Report while highlighting its key themes including job satisfaction, education, and support in the nursing profession.
