Grace and peace to you. I'm Rev. Joe Cailles, the pastor of Peakland United Methodist Church in Lynchburg Virginia. Today is Wednesday, November 8, 2023 Peakland United Methodist Church is finishing up with this book, Being a United Methodist Christian which explores our beliefs, our best practices and our history as a United Methodist Christian. This week and next, we are talking about the three general rules of being a United Methodist Christian. John Wesley created the three rules in 1743 when the methodist movement was growing beyond the Holy Club that he led at Oxford University. Small groups of Methodist men and women were gathering each week to pray for one another, read scripture together and to hold one another accountable in their Christian discipleship. John Wesley gave these methodist groups three rules to live by and to strengthen their faith: First: Do no harm and avoid evil of every kind. Second: Do good of every possible sort and as far as possible to all. Third: Attend upon the ordinances of God. A simple way to remember that: Avoid Harm. Do Good. Follow Christ. John Wesley had specific ways that methodist were to avoid harm, do good and follow Christ. Wesley wrote, Avoid harm like drunkenness and buying or selling spiritous liquor or drinking it, unless in extreme necessity. Avoid harm with no Fighting, quarreling, brawling, returning evil for evil or, the using of many words in buying or selling. No putting on gold or costly apparel. No softness or needless self-indulgence. My favorite is No uncharitable or unprofitable conversation particularly no speaking evil of magistrates or of ministers. For doing good, John Wesley quotes the Gospel of Matthew, chapter 25 and directs us to give food to the hungry, clothing to the naked, visiting or helping them who are sick or in prison. That will be the scripture and the theme of the sermon next Sunday, when we at Peakland welcome Rev. Leigh Anne Taylor to the pulpit. John Wesley also warned methodists that they were to avoid the odious custom of avoiding good works unless our hearts be free to do it. Some Christians back then had gotten it into their heads that unless they felt like doing good works, they shouldn't actually do good works. I trust none of us are so foolish as that. I don't always feel like flossing or working out at 6:00 in the morning or paying my bills, but I still do those things. Charity and acts of mercy and kindness and justice are not optional for us United Methodists. John Wesley's final rule was to follow the ordinances of God. “Ordinances” in this case are the activities which God has ordered for us to draw us closer to God and closer to each other. Things like: Sunday worship, prayer, Bible study, fasting and abstinence, communion, and baptism, acts of charity, justice, forgiveness, and mercy. We today may disagree with some of the specific John Wesley wanted methodists to do but the three rules are an honorable part of our heritage and a really good way of being a United Methodist Christian, so this week and in the days to come figure out how you will Avoid Harm. Do Good and Follow Christ. Thanks be to God.

This is a new Year and a New Season of life. Let's talk about your most important collaboration for 2022. In what ways do you need to collaborate with God in this new year? Study first the word of god and see what he says about you and then ask the question why am I here. Here on earth, here in this job, this home etc….. Thoughts Where your thoughts go, where your actions will follow. What are you thinking about: yourself, your plans and the people around you. What are you taking in through your eyes, ears and touch. Who is around you and how are they affecting your thoughts Plans Are your plans God's plans? I ask myself the same thing so often, but the next key is sitting back and listening. And God will show you in small ways. Avoid comparison trap God can only work with you, not your imitation of someone else Study the word and continue to apply God's principle to your life Action How do you take action Based on God's guidance, Create a plan. First Do your research Then create a timeline Recognize the Routines that you will need to have in place and the habits you will need to establish for those routines to become part of your life. I've Created a project planner to help you write and create steps to establish a plan to achieve your goals

This is an episode full of questions! We’ve got answers! Have you ever wondered how labs develop black & white film? Do your photos tell a story? We’ve also got an interview with David Chao, a zine review and some news!Answering MachineDo you feel that your photos or a selection of your photos tell a larger story? It was an odd question this week. Did it break Eric? It probably did. But we had an array of answers and some fun discussion.Hello, DavidOur interview this episode is with David Chao. David grew up between San Francisco and Osaka, Japan. The way he captures the story of a people and their culture is something a bit different than we’ve seen before. While his individual photos may be striking, his series and collections are what create his powerful narrative.@davidchao.film on IGdavidchaophotography.comHere are a few of his photos:How Do Labs Process Black & White Film? But when a photographer drops their film off at a lab, all of those choices are left to the lab. Now, granted, these folks are professionals, often with decades of experience. They’ve honed their craft from an art to a science and back again.Still, we’ve always wondered what happens when you drop black & white film off at a lab. We’ve both done it before, and both had no idea what goes on behind the scenes. We just dropped off the rolls and picked them up a few days later. They looked great and we didn’t really question why.But now we are. Why? Why do they look so good? It’s a question that’s always been in my head. So we reached out to about a dozen labs – and a HUGE thanks to the five that responded. We asked them two questions. First:Do you have a specific developer that you use or each common emulsion? And second:What is the practice for when a customer brings you a roll of some mysterious black & white emulsion? For example, some oddball low ISO Soviet film.We talked with five different labs:Panda Lab – @pandalabseattleCafe Obscura – @cafeobscurasudburyRoberts Camera – @robertscameraIconLA – @iconlaBlue Moon Camera – @bluemooncameraEach answered these two questions in some really interesting and unique ways.Zine ReviewThis is a halfsize, landscape zine, 32 pages, color and b&w. As the name highly suggests, this was taken on a roadtrip from New York to Charleston, South Carolina, though he dips down into Savannah. The photos are mostly empty, which is right in my wheelhouse. This is what I like to shoot, and this is what I like to see. The B&W shots, mostly on HP5, live up to all the praise of that emulsion. Even the Fomapan looks wonderful (something I really can’t make happen).Daniel recently reprinted this issue, and it’s available on his website – danielnovakphoto.com for $8.The Slow Meow ZineOur first rebranded film was dubbed the Slow Meow (it was Tasma Mikrat 200). It was neat to see how many of you used the hashtag and shared their results on IG.So we’ve been talking about this. While this is *our* podcast, we really like to open it up to the community. And because of that, we’d like to make a community zine. And since so many of you shot with the Slow Meow, we’d like to make a zine of a selection of those photos. So if you got the film, we’d like you to submit six of your favorite Slow Meow photosWe’re going to compile a zine together with everyone who has shot with it. Everyone who appears in the zine will receive a free copy (you can always buy more copies). The rest will be sold and traded like any other zine.Criteria:Size of image: at least 3600 x 2400(ish) at 300dpiCut off date: July 30Submit via Email only: allthroughalens.podcast@gmail.comInfo needed: Name; IG/Twitter handle; Camera used; Mailing address—Be sure to check out our Dev Party episodes. ✅ Here’s a summary of what was discussed in this coaching/feedback episode: Breaking down the project into smaller tasks Doing a time analysis Getting clarity on the business idea Christopher Hayles’ entry on Facebook contained the following: “Ok gents, I'm at a loss. 3 kids 5-16, work full time for a consultancy company that works closely with Microsoft. We do cloud migrations, automation, data science and business intelligence. Lots of highly sought after stuff. Obviously, this is pretty well paid.” … I'm not wasting a bunch of time. I rarely watch tv, I play soccer once a week, I time limit my social media, I don't get enough sleep as it is. I'm just kinda stuck. Question: How have you managed to break away from the routine to build something on the side? Is it necessary to let some of the other plates drop, temporarily? DILEMMA ➡️ I've long wanted to break out on my own, but somehow seems there's no time whatsoever to work on any personal projects that could eventually turn into a business. First: Choose a project - singular - that ties in with your business Second: Break down the project into small tasks Third: Work on one little task at a time maybe one each day or week When the project is looked at as a whole, it appears as one gigantic mountain; impossible to scale When it is broken down and given its own focus, the size shrinks DILEMMA ➡️ Usually there's barely enough time to take care of myself after taking care of everyone else and my full-time job. First: Do a time analysis by putting it all down on paper Second: Track your time over a 2-week period and see how you are spending your time. Be brutally honest Third: Look over the data and see what is there that was a time-waster or can be removed DILEMMA ➡️ I also have a hard time justifying (to myself) diverting funds to any of my pet projects. First: It is understandable if you are diverting funds to a pet project. This makes it sound like an expensive hobby Second: Be clear on what it is you are pursuing: is it a hobby or a business? Third: If it is a business, then see it as investing funds, rather than diverting funds ✅ Now Your Turn Go to legacybuildingdads.com, you can request entry into the group, where you’ll answer a couple of questions and if you meet criteria, you’ll be given access to this high achievers group. In 1647, the new puritan government tried to cancel Christmas. People in Canterbury protested in a peculiarly English way, with a destructive game of football followed by a mass brawl. The city’s Plum Pudding Riots led to a royalist revolt throughout Kent and the second round of the Civil War. With Parliamentary armies fighting in Wales and Scotland, could this have marked a revival in fortunes for the beleaguered King Charles the First? Do you like the podcast?
