You Will Be Peter with Jerry Lathan, Steve Manchester The extraordinary story of a young fisherman who became the Founding Father of Christianity, the most influential and enduring institution in history. He's one of the most well-known figures in cultures around the world, etched into stained glass, painted in frescoes, even caricatured as standing at the gates of heaven with a long white beard and keys in hand. But long before he was portrayed as a venerated and untouchable figure, Peter was simply known as Simon, a twenty-something fisherman in a far-flung Jewish province controlled by the Roman Empire. Loyal and faithful, impetuous and passionate, Simon's quiet life is upended by the arrival of a man called Jesus of Nazareth, rumored to be the long-awaited Messiah who would rescue the Jewish people from oppression. When Simon meets Jesus, the mysterious man tells him, “You will be Peter,” a prophetic statement that would slowly transform Simon's life. Eager to be free of the Romans, Simon joins Jesus in hopes that he can guard this leader who will, undoubtedly, build an army to challenge Rome. But as Simon waits for the army to form, he watches Jesus show a compassion for others Simon has never seen before. The miracles Jesus performs—healing the sick, feeding crowds of thousands—show not a display of military might, but of service and love. Real, relatable and impeccably researched, You Will Be Peter draws on the four Gospel accounts to weave Simon Peter's story into one seamless tapestry. Readers get a front-row seat to Simon's three-year walk with Jesus, as Simon watches the Son of Man feed the hungry, raise the dead, upend the status quo and challenge the elite during one of world history's most pivotal seasons. In perhaps one of the greatest miracles, we can see ourselves in Simon, this ordinary man Jesus chose to accompany Him. Simon wasn't well-educated, but he was faithful and headstrong. Though he could rush to judgment and use a foul word from time to time, he was the kind of friend who loved fiercely and was doggedly loyal—until he wasn't. Although he failed, Simon wasn't cast away from Jesus' mission. In fact, his failures and subsequent redemption made him a more empathetic and capable rock upon whom the Church was built. With storytelling artistry that transports readers to the first-century world, with the sights, sounds, and smells of that time, You Will Be Peter shares an age-old story told from a new set of eyes: it's possible for one ordinary person, however unlikely, to change the world forever. https://www.youwillbepeter.com/ Jerry Lathan brings a wealth of knowledge in telling the remarkable story of Simon Peter. Combining his lifelong interest of history with a decade of research, Jerry has unearthed missing details on the evolution of Simon—the brash fisherman who became Peter. Over forty-plus years, Jerry's national award-winning construction company has preserved and restored historic churches and other structures and national monuments. His deep interest in the lives of historic characters is central to his calling to author You Will Be Peter. From Jerry's time as co-owner of Big Easy Studios in New Orleans where more than twelve major movies were filmed, he understands the incredible power of a good story. In this book, the culmination of his life's work, Jerry shares the real and relatable story of Simon Peter, the very flawed man whom Jesus chose to build His church. youwillbepeter@gmail.com 251.443.7663  (Monday-Friday) Co-Author Steven Manchester is the author of the soul-awakening novel The Menu as well as the 1980s nostalgia-series Bread Bags & Bullies and Lawn Darts & Lemonade. Other works include the #1 bestsellers Twelve Months, The Rockin' Chair, Pressed Pennies, and  Gooseberry Island; the national bestsellers Ashes, The Changing Season, and Three Shoeboxes; the multi-award winning novels Dad and  Goodnight Brian; and the heartwarming Christmas movie The Thursday Night Club. His work has appeared on NBC's TODAY and CBS's The Early Show; and in Billboard and People magazines. Three of Steven's short stories were selected for “101 Best” for the Chicken Soup for the Soul  series. I have a friend who just celebrated his 100th birthday. He was a bombadier during World War II. Do you ever feel like you have to be perfect? The perfect mother, daughter, employee, partner, etc? It's a familiar struggle that I have grappled with in my own life, and as a therapist, I've witnessed this innate desire to be perfect from thousands of women. That's how I first came across Elise Loehnen's bestselling book, On Our Best Behavior: The Seven Deadly Sins and the Price Women Pay to Be Good.  It is such an intriguing read and I am thrilled to have her on the Cracking Open podcast today.Elise is not only a New York Times bestselling author, but also the host of the podcast Pulling the Thread, where she interviews cultural luminaries about life's big questions. In our conversation, we talk through some of our own big questions like how she got the idea for her book after speaking with the celebrity therapist Lori Gottlieb on the Goop podcast. Ms. Gottlieb told her - pay attention to envy, it can show you what you want. Gottlieb's insight into using envy as a revealing emotion inspired Elise to explore the other six "deadly sins" —lust, anger, greed, gluttony, sloth, and pride—and their impact on women's lives. Not only did this exploration deeply influence millions of women's lives but her own as well."I'm the primary breadwinner. I've killed myself to succeed in life and be a good mother, partner, citizen, employee, and boss. And, you know, I was breathless, exhausted, and recognized that I was running a race with no finish line, that I was competing against a standard that I had not created and that would never give me any rewards that would mean anything to me." ~ Elise LoehnenBoy oh boy, can I relate! Maybe you can too?Join us as we delve into a wide range of topics, such as the Enneagram personality type system, Elise's affinity with spiritual figures such as Mary Magdalene (and how I feel that Elise is our modern-day Joan of Arc!). Elise was previously the chief content officer of the famous lifestyle brand goop. While there, she co-hosted The goop Podcast and The goop Lab on Netflix, and led the brand's content strategy and programming, including launching a magazine with Condé Nast and a book imprint. Before goop, she held roles as the editorial projects director of Conde Nast Traveler and editor at large and deputy editor of Lucky Magazine, where she also served as the on-air spokesperson, appearing regularly on shows like Today, E!, Good Morning America, and The Early Show. Elise is highly accomplished in her career and a staunch advocate for women's self-acceptance. She emphasizes that it's not about striving for perfection but rather about becoming aware of how cultural programming and ancient ideas of morality, such as the seven deadly sins, continue to control and distort women's lives today. Elise believes that trusting in our natural instincts can lead us back to a more balanced, peaceful, and spiritually fulfilling way of living. My conversation with Elise was a breath of fresh air. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.Love,MollyLearn more about Elise Loehnen hereJoin Elise's Substack herePurchase On Our Best Behavior hereListen to Pulling the Thread podcast hereFollow Elise on Instagram

— “You must grieve the loss of who you were before you can accept the reality of who you have become.”  Susan Kelley is a successful author of humor and relationship books and is a veteran of the talk show circuit – including an appearance on Oprah. Until recently she was living and working with her artist husband between homes in Florence, Italy and Sarasota, Florida. A fit and attractive former model who was always on the go, Susan thought she was invincible and did not feel old. And then she fell off a train. She had another bad fall and then another. Searching for answers, she started to chronicle her journey with no idea what could be causing the problem. She just needed someone to fix it. She saw a parade of doctors and specialists. Her often amusing, and always frustrating, quest ultimately led to a definitive diagnosis – a progressive condition with no treatment or cure. Now she had to figure out how to move forward, and she kept writing because she learned that an astonishing number of people are being challenged by chronic disease. Maybe you are one of them. These diseases and conditions have an impact on just about all of us. On these pages you will read an honest, courageous, and brilliantly comic account about one woman's real-life challenges to find and then face a life-changing diagnosis. Valeria interviews Susan Kelley — She is the author of  “The Diagnosis Diaries: A Frank, Funny And Poignant Book For Anyone Touched By Chronic Disease.” Susan Kelley is also the author of Real Women Send Flowers, Why Men Commit, Why Men Stray / Why Men Stay, The Second Time Around: Everything You Need to Know to Make Your Remarriage Happy, I Oprahed and Other Adventures of a Woman of a Certain Age and, Ciao Pussy! A Memoir of Florence, published in September 2015 and re-titled, Forever Florence: A Memoir, in 2020). Her best-selling relationship books have been translated into several foreign languages, including Japanese, Polish, Turkish and Dutch. Susan has appeared as guest relationship expert on The Oprah Winfrey Show, The Early Show on CBS NEWS, “Homepage” MSNBC, Fox TV and numerous other national and local television programs throughout the country as well as hundreds of radio interviews in the United States and Canada. She lives in Florence, Italy and Sarasota, Florida. When it comes to health and fitness, myths abound. From the latest diet fad to the "perfect" exercise routine, it can be challenging to discern what's factual and sustainable. In this episode, I'm joined by Adam Bornstein, a fitness expert and author of “You Can't Screw This Up”, who shares his knowledge and experience to help navigate the complexities of dieting, weight loss, and the psychological barriers associated with forming new, healthier habits.  We discuss the importance of forming sustainable health and fitness habits over quick fixes, the need for debunking common health myths and understanding science-backed information, and the role of psychology and environment design in habit formation and change. Adam Bornstein is the editorial director of Livestrong.com, and former fitness editor at Men's Health. He co-authored the bestselling The IMPACT! Body Plan, The Men's Health Diet, and has been featured on Good Morning America, The Early Show, and E!'s The Daily 10. What we discuss: (0:02:00) - Adam's transition from university researcher to fitness editor and media icon and the importance of disseminating science-backed health information (0:12:47) - Why making small, sustainable changes in diet and exercise is more effective for long-term weight loss than drastic calorie cuts and intense workouts (0:27:49) - Why aligning diet with individual lifestyle is more sustainable than following fads (0:30:03) - The consequences of consuming ultra-processed foods, supported by findings from an NIH study on increased calorie intake and weight gain (0:40:34) - The psychological aspects of weight loss, stressing the importance of accepting occasional deviations as part of a sustainable health plan (0:45:59) - Common weight loss myths and the need for setting achievable goals and forming habits to prevent reliance on willpower alone (0:50:21) - The importance of being present during meals to regulate food intake and the underestimated calorie count in restaurant meals (1:00:07) - Personal eating boundaries, such as closing the kitchen at specific times, to prevent overeating and improve nutritional discipline Thank you to our sponsors: Head to factormeals.com/habitsandhustle50 and use code habitsandhustle50 to get 50% off.
