For this holiday special we begin with a traditional English Christmas feast as described by a family friend, highlighting a strange historical black dessert called a plum pudding or simply a Christmas pudding. Being topped with a holly sprig, we then learn the origins of some ancient plant-lore. But the meat of this sumptuous episode is a reading from a deeply mysterious and haunting, 14th-century Arthurian legend that takes place at a Christmas feast; one rudely interrupted by an axe-wielding Green Knight who demands a volunteer to join him in a deadly game. Merry Christmas! Reading excerpts from Folklore of Kent by Fran & Geoff Doel; English Botany Or, Coloured Figures of British Plants · Volume 2 by James Sowerby; and Plant Lore, Legends, and Lyrics; Embracing the Myths, Traditions, Superstitions, and Folk-lore of the Plant Kingdom by Richard Folkard.Main reading from Sir Gawain and The Green Knight translated by Simon Armitage."Sweet was the Songe the Virgine Sung" 16th-century Christmas CarolPerformed by Ernst Stolz & Katrhine Brandt"Dove's Figary or Chestnut" English Country DancePerformed by Ernst Stolz"Be Merry, Be Merry I Pray You"Medieval English CarolPerformed by Ernst Stolz "What Child is This? “The circumstances under which we are spending this particular Christmas are unusual.” This is the story of the Christmases of World War I. Germans and British troops, singing carols together. French and German troops, kicking, playing sports and exchanging treats. It may not last, but for a brief moment–for Christmas of 1914–these opposing armies refuse the orders of their superiors as they temporarily “beat their swords into plowshares and spears into pruninghooks.” In the years ahead, the United States' forces have their own Christmas celebrations “over there.” In 1917, New York's Harlem Rattlers, or Hellfighters, sing and celebrate as they travel to France. In 1918, all ranks of the AEF–be they doughboys or Hello Girls–celebrate a post-armistice Christmas. We'll catch a speech by the president and a Christmas Bash at Black Jack Pershing's headquarters where George Patton eats way too much plum pudding. And then, we'll say goodbye to Black Jack. With a loving Christmas connection years down the road, it's time to lay him to rest with his beloved doughboys in Arlington. ____ 3 Ways to dive deeper into History That Doesn't Suck Join our growing facebook community Get our weekly newsletter, The Revolution Become part of the HTDS Patreon family Learn more about your ad choices. Welcome to February 12th, 2023 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate a presidential favorite and the perfect Big Game crunch. Plum pudding hails from England, but Abraham Lincoln liked it so much that the recipe can still be found in White House Historical cookbooks. This steamed pudding does not call for plums, however, but is made instead from apples, dates, raisins, nutmeg and cinnamon. Thanks to Charles Dickens, most people think of it as a Christmas dessert. Back in the day people dimmed the lights to serve plum pudding and children played a game called snap dragon as they tried to snatch raisins from the flaming dessert. National Plum Pudding Day coincides with President Lincoln's birthday to honor this American's love for a traditional English treat. And what could be better than plum pudding to serve on the day of the Big Game? Today your snacking choices are endless, but doesn't it seem fitting to put pigskin on the menu? Pork rinds have been around for centuries and got their start with Spanish royalty in the 1500s. Apparently the aristocracy saw them as a delicacy. In the 1800s the tasty rinds became a convenient snack for shepherds, who cooked most meals over an open fire as they tended their flocks. They were also favored by United States soldiers as a way to provide sustenance on long journeys. Today, pork rinds are a dieter's dream if you follow the low carb, paleo or keto trend. But with a variety of flavors that rival potato chips, any and all snackers can have their protein and crunch it too. On National Pork Rind Day pop open a bag of your favorite flavor and enjoy the Big Game. I'm Anna Devere and I'm Marlo Anderson. Thanks for joining us as we Celebrate Every Day! Welcome to February 12th, 2022 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate how far movies have come and a Presidential birthday treat. Before there were movie theaters, there were Kinetoscopes. These cabinet-like devices looked a little like arcade games. For a quarter—which was a pretty steep price in 1894—people could watch a movie. By themselves, anyway. Kinetoscopes showed short films via a peephole and only one person could watch at a time. The films were very basic—usually nothing more than people dancing or a horse running. But to a world that had never seen a moving image before, the Kinetoscope was nothing short of magical. Over a century later, we can celebrate Global Movie Day from the couch as we stream our favorite films—with or without someone else. Everyone knows that the birthday boy or girl gets to choose their favorite dessert on their special day. Most of us like cakes or pies for the occasion, but one American president loved plum pudding. While this dessert hails from England, Abraham Lincoln liked it so much that the recipe can still be found in White House Historical cookbooks. The steamed pudding does not call for plums, however, but is made instead from apples, dates, raisins, nutmeg and cinnamon. Thanks to Charles Dickens, most people think of it as a Christmas dessert. Back in the day people dimmed the lights to serve plum pudding and children played a game called snap dragon as they tried to snatch raisins from the flaming dessert. On National Plum Pudding Day we honor the birthday boy's choice and give a nod to Mr. Lincoln. I'm Anna Devere and I'm Marlo Anderson. Thanks for joining us as we Celebrate Every Day! Hear us out! In this holiday episode, Anna & Lia slice into that much maligned Christmas staple, fruitcake - and hopefully change your mind about it. Lia takes us to the small-town Texas bakery that pumps out 30,000 fruitcakes a day (!) and a medieval fruitcake toss competition in Colorado. We also hear how literary legend Truman Capote made fruitcake a sacred food in his Alabama hometown, and how his aunt became “The Fruitcake Lady” with her own bizarre segment on The Tonight Show. In the Deep Dish, Anna tells us about the fascinating journey of fruitcake from crusader energy bar to royal wedding cake, and shares the different versions from all over the world - including a particularly traumatic experience she had with the Irish kind, Plum Pudding. But Listeners, there's one Fruitcake Mystery we need your help solving: WTF are those green things?!Connect with us at @FoodDayPod on Instagram & Twitter, join our Facebook Group, and check out our webpage.Explore more from the show: Listen to Truman Capote's beautiful reading of A Christmas Memory Watch our favorite Tonight Show guest, the Fruitcake Lady, give people very interesting advice Watch this clip of the great fruitcake toss and the amazing inventions that accompany itFind episode transcripts here.

Frances reads from the Machell Cox Family Budget - a stream of letters collectively written by ten adult siblings from a middle class Edwardian family. They started writing in 1906 and continued, non-stop, for the rest of their lives. There are eighty years worth of letters, safely preserved in the Bodleian Library in Oxford, which is where Frances discovered them. The letters were written by the family members of Frances, but are available to be read by anyone eligible for admittance to the library. There are also family letters from the 1820s.Today Frances reads more of the 1907 Christmas Budget - a special edition, written by the seven "home siblings" (Enid, Edmund, Arthur, Bernard, Cuthbert, Avice & Vera), along with contributions from their parents (Rev Dr John Charles Cox and Mrs Marian Cox.) The Budget was read aloud by Bernard, Cuthbert, Avice and Vera; they read it to each other, at home in Sydenham on Christmas Day, after tea and presents. The family home was called St Alban's and they lived at 13 Longton Avenue in Sydenham, south London. The Budget was then posted to the other UK siblings - Enid in Liverpool, Edmund in Derbyshire and Arthur in Plymouth. It was then posted to Wilfred in Canada, Neville in South Africa and Aldwyn in Nyasaland (Malawi). It was then posted back to England and was stored in the bottom of a wardrobe and then in a garage for about 70 years.Edmund is the great grandfather of Frances, and she is thoroughly enjoying deciphering the handwriting and sharing these fascinating documents through this podcast. Cameroon is one of those tobaccos that seems to be appearing in more and more new cigars. Today we light up one of the most anticipated Cameroon releases, the Aladino Cameroon Super Toro, which features a Cameroon wrapper grown by Julio Eiroa on his own farm in the Jamastran Valley of Honduras. We paired it with Down East Aloha Friday, an apple and pineapple hard cider. Was this a complimentary or contrasting pairing or a "comp-trasting" pairing? While we smoke the Aladino, we also talk about the differences between this Honduran grown tobacco and the African variety, and share what our favorite Cameroon cigars are.For our pipe tobacco we light up what some say is the "Nirvana" of Balkan blends, Seattle Pipe Club's Plum Pudding Special Reserve. Does this coveted crumble cake deserve such praise? We give our take on this popular tobacco. We brought pack a favorite cocktail that Pastor Padron believed would be a perfect pairing with the Plum Pudding Special Reserve-the Penicillin, a cocktail made with Johnnie Walker Black, lemon juice, honey ginger simple syrup, over ice with a float of Laphroaig 10 Year.We also talk about our favorite summer drinks, Paul brings us up to date on the latest news, talk about the difference between English and Balkan blends, answer viewer questions, and ask an other would you rather question. This is the only podcast that brings the wealth of knowledge, expertise, and fun of Twins Smoke Shop, New England’s premiere smoke shop, right to you, wherever you are, whenever you want it. Our series of sequels for our 2 year anniversary continues with this Christmas movie from Hallmark. You know, for anniversaries, you should get gifts.
