When hip-hop's popularity skyrocketed in the 90s and early 2000s, designers and stylists embraced—and dressed—their tribes. And the world took notice. Featuring Monica Morrow, Boz Bradshaw, Elena Romero and April Walker.  Syllabus:  The multi-billion dollar fashion industry didn't become so profitable on its own. Check out the book, Free Stylin': How Hip-Hop Changed the Fashion Industry, where author (and guest) Elena Romero breaks down how hip hop fashion went “from the ‘hood' to the runway.”  What were some of the most defining fashion labels and looks in hip hop fashion history? The essay, “A Great Day in Hip Hop – A Decade of Hip Hop Style's Influences” brings it all together, and urges us to never forget. Check out our profile of Misa Hylton, who was a contemporary of Monica and Boz, advocating to dress Black music artists. A great way to take in all of the incredible hip hop style from the past is to see it in motion. Sit back and watch the documentary Fresh Dressed for an introduction to hip hop's pioneers and tastemakers.  Black fashion contributions have had a global impact, and the industry doesn't hesitate to monetize it – often with no credit. The book White Negroes: When Cornrows Were in Vogue... and Other Thoughts on Cultural Appropriation builds an argument for why this is problematic and even harmful. How many of you are familiar with the name Isaiah Rankin when it comes to head-turning streetwear?Guest Elizabeth Way provides a formal introduction. Guest April Walker told us about the influence that a particular streetwear icon had on her design and business trajectory. You can read his story in the memoir, Dapper Dan: Made in Harlem. Black music artists have been setting the trends for at least a century. Guest Elizabeth Way takes us back in time to acknowledge the unforgettable menswear legacy of Sam Cooke. The multitalented performer and activist Eartha Kitt was wearing luxury fashion labels amidst the segregation era. This profile reminds us of the power she wielded with her style, leaving a feminist sartorial legacy that reverberates to this day. This week we catch up with Sharene Wood, Founder of HH Bespoke Spirits, and Filippo Lapides, National Brand Ambassador to Enovation Brands which has a focus on helping coral reefs! About HH Bespoke Spirits The award-winning (Time Out New York) bespoke boutique listed as "One of the best places to shop in Harlem" (Racked.com). The "retail expression" of 5001 FLAVORS located in the heart of Harlem, NY opened in 2012. The nearly 2,000 square foot boutique, former home of the late civil rights leader Malcolm X, carries emerging accessory and apparel designers and pays homage to Harlem's rich history and luminaries. Harlem Haberdashery was created by legendary custom-fashion design and styling company 5001 FLAVORS (featured in CNN Films documentary “Fresh Dressed”). Introducing a New Line of Spirits from Harlem's First Family of Fashion HH BESPOKE RUM - is a truly unique blend of aged rums reminiscent of those produced in the 18th century. This expressive and distinctive spirit starts as Grade A molasses, which is distilled in a traditional copper still. It is then aged in both New American Oak and then once-used Bourbon barrels. The result is a distinctive barrel rum extremely rich and complex in flavor, with hints of butterscotch, vanilla, and other exotic notes that please the palate. HH BESPOKE GIN - is a remix on a traditional London Dry style gin, with moderate juniper flavors upfront, which is balanced by an infusion of lavender, rosehip, and plum. Our gin mixes well with everything from simple tonic water to stronger bitter or sweet flavors. HH BESPOKE VODKA - is a grain-based, super-premium vodka of exquisite quality, handmade in small batches. With its crisp and clean taste, HH Bespoke Vodka is a perfect mixer for cocktails or a refreshing drink all by itself. About Enovation Brands We overlay our forward motion with a bit of Old World insight, which is most evident in our commitment to never compromise on quality. From our supplier to their partners in the vineyards, to each and every individual in the Enovation family, we are dedicated to delivering a consistently superb product at an excellent value. We present the same products that we are proud to serve to our families and friends on our tables every day. We present these products in distinctive, eye-catching packaging that wins consumers over at the point of sale and are confident knowing that the quality of the wine inside will create a brand loyalist. About Living Coral Living Coral Sparkling Rosé captures the splendor of a coral reef in every glass poured. The color is reminiscent of the sun's rays breaking the ocean's surface to light up the world below and the bubbly effervescence is evocative of the life contained with this lush undersea world. The bouquet is pleasantly fruity with floral notes and gives way to the concentrated fruit flavors of ripe nectarine and peach balanced by refreshing acidity. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/therosehourpodcast/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/therosehourpodcast/support

The Sheap is back! This time around Sean Sheap and I met up at Dicey Riley's and talked a bunch of smack. Topics covered were the internet, hip hop culture and The Get Down, the downfall of Masters, other things and of course the internet. Yes, I wrote "the internet" twice. Now I've said it three times, and if I was to list it corresponding with the amount of times it comes up on the episode this post would be close to infinite. Oh, and I struggle with the word "plural" it seems, hash tag: #prural.  The documentary we were talking about, but couldn't remember the name of is called "Fresh Dressed" and can be found on here on Netflix.  We also talk about Sean's friend @clay_by_bec who did some tremendous custom figurines for him, so if you'd like some of your own that's where to go.  Last but not least, the Sheap has been uploading some videos on his Facebook page of late, showcasing his wizardry on the 1's and 2's, so if you're not already on that or his online archiving of his vinyl collection go and get yourself acquainted!  Facebook: facebook.com/DJ-Sean-Sheap-105319947491/?fref=ts  Tumblr: allseansrecords.tumblr.com  Twitter: twitter.com/SeanSheap1  Instagram: instagram.com/seansheap/

Sacha Jenkins is more than a journalist or filmmaker. He’s spent the better part of two decades documenting and commentating hip hop and other underground cultures. He’s been a creative force behind Mass Appeal magazine, the recent documentary Fresh Dressed, and was a founder of Ego Trip’s subversive media empire that encompassed books and magazines as well as TV shows. If that’s not enough, he also plays in multiple punk bands. In our interview Sacha gives us insight into a career that started as a humble attempt to make a life by living in the culture he loved. In the process, he’s enlightened and entertained hip hop and graffiti fans all over the world. How? He leads with his creativity. Rather than thinking of it as a business, he just creates, and pulls other creative people around him to collaborate. And he isn’t afraid to fail: "If you are afraid to fail you are never going to win ever." Hear Sacha’s great stories about his journey here. *EDM.com Track of the Week: Cas Cray - Smokin' (https://soundcloud.com/hip-hop/cas-cray-smokin)
