Stacey is joined by Chris Wilson on a Twitter Spaces Chat and you'll also hear from Mike Hoskins for a look back to 2022. Mike is currently an editor at Healthline and formerly the managing editor at DiabetesMine. Chris Wilson, is a longtime advocate and information junkie who just marked 25 years with type 1. Chris will tell you that for much of his time with diabetes he didn't have insurance and didn't use a lot of the more advanced tech.. and now he really follows it all very closely, takes part in clinical trials and is designing his own pretty incredibly sounding DIY closed loop features.   Merry Christmas! Hosts Jared Haley and Chris Wilson talk about the true meaning of Christmas, what is Christmas Spirit and how they talk about Santa Claus and Jesus with their children. They also recount some of their favorite Christmas moments and share some hilarious stories about the magic of Santa.  Christmas is a time of reflection and pause...   A time to remember how blessed we are in this life and for the year that is ending. A time to focus on what truly matters. A time to give back to other people and show you care for them. A time to smile more, be grateful for the life you have, the people who are in it and let your light shine for others to see. A time of hope, love, light, singing, celebration and giving.  The greatest time of the year not measured in what you get but in what you have with family, friends and loved ones.  Christmas is the day our Savior was born. The day that will forever change who we are and how we live our lives forever. The day 'the most talked about man who ever lived' was born. A day of celebration for Jesus of Nazareth - Hallelujah for Jesus Christ our King on His birthday.    “Our kids, even when they do believe Santa is real, they understand the hierarchy -- that Jesus is more important and will always be important than giving gifts from Santa Claus. And the gift that Jesus gives is way more important than anything you're gonna receive.” -- Jared Haley    Scripture for today's episode:  John 3:16  "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life."    Isaiah 7:14  Therefore, the Lord Himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call His name Immanuel.    Luke 1:35  And the angel answered her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy — the Son of God."    Isaiah 9:6  For to us a Child is born, to us a Son is given; and the government shall be upon His shoulder, and His name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.     Matthew 2:10-12  When they [the wise men] saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. And going into the house, they saw the Child with Mary His mother, and they fell down and worshiped Him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered Him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh. And being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed to their own country by another way.    Time Stamps   00:00 – How Santa Claus points us to Jesus  00:25 – Welcome to the 'Strong By Design' podcast  03:40 – Hosts Jared Haley and Chris Wilson on what Christmas makes them feel  11:55 – Is it okay for Christians to believe in Santa?  18:10 – The true spirit of Christmas giving  23:40 – Jared and Chris share their respective family's Christmas traditions  29:39 – Is Santa real? What effect does marijuana have on the brain itself and the chemical activity happening at the neuron receptor sites? Over the last 10+ years smoking marijuana has become a widely accepted drug used recreationally and prescribed by doctors in some cases. It has become big business. But no one seems to be talking about the negative implications attached to using this carcinogenic drug that is highly addictive, is as harmful as tobacco and has long term impact on the brain, especially on younger developing brains. Internal medicine physician Dr. Annette Bosworth (Dr. Boz) returns to the Strong By Design podcast show to speak with host Chris Wilson about her scientifically backed research. This conversation is based on a recent 90-minute webinar she made showcasing the consequences of chronic marijuana use.   “Marijuana is a great example of how just compartmentalizing one organ would leave you missing the bigger punch line of what this molecule really does to the development of proper human, and the healing that people really want it to do but the evidence is not there.” -- Dr. Boz - Annette Bosworth   Time Stamps 00:28 - Welcome to the 'Strong By Design' podcast 03:48 - Meet today's special guest, Dr. Boz  07:02 - Dr. Boz gets real about marijuana and its effect on brain health 20:43 - Marijuana use among youth: Is it safe? 27:03 - Hippocampal growth: Dr. Boz on why it's crucial to educate teens about marijuana 34:55 - Discover other factors associated with blunted development of hippocampus  41:33 - Dr. Boz on hippocampus damage, and how to heal injured brains 44:04 - Learn how marijuana impacts the cannabinoid receptors of the brain 50:48 - How long does marijuana stay in your brain?   Resources: Dr Boz Webinar – Marijuana and Brain Health   Connect w/ Dr. Boz: Facebook Instagram YouTube   Connect w/ CriticalBench:  Youtube Facebook Instagram CriticalBench.com StrongByDesignPodcast.com

Chris Wilson had a normal childhood with a loving and nurturing mom who gave him many of the lessons and skill sets he uses today, but when gun violence started showing up in his neighborhood everything changed for Chris. In this podcast, we discuss the traumatic stress young Chris had to go through surrounded by so much violence both from kids on the streets and the folks who were supposed to be protecting him, how that landed him with a life sentence, and how he got free both literally and mentally. We cover the specific tools Chris used and continues to use to change his way of thinking and achieve accomplishments that most would find impossible outside the confines of prison. There is so much to learn here from Chris's single-minded focus, use of rewards and deterrents, journaling, and vision boarding. I'm so glad I got to have this conversation with him.   Chris splits his time between Baltimore, Maryland, and New York City and works as a visual artist, author, film producer, and social justice advocate. Through his work, he investigates societal injustices, human relationships, and public policies. His book, The Master Plan, continues to inspire people from all walks of life. His artwork is collected and displayed internationally and his production company, Cuttlefish, has produced several successful films, including The Box which was featured at the Tribeca Film Festival. He is also the founder of the Chris Wilson Foundation, which supports social entrepreneurs and prison education, including re-entry and financial literacy for returning citizens, as well as art-related programs. This week we start our conversation we got while attending the Whip Mix (https://www.whipmix.com/) Digital Forum (https://www.whipmix.com/special-events/2022-digital-forum/) back in October. This amazing yearly event brought so many great speakers and attendees that gave us an opportunity to talk to so many wonderful people in our industry. There is nothing like good ol' face-to-face recording. First up is the Vice President of Zubler USA (https://zublerusa.com/), Chris Wilson. Chris talks about a lot of the items that Zubler sells, but really educates us all the different ovens in a lab and what makes a good oven good. Chiming in is Blake Barksdale from Barksdale Dental Lab (https://barksdaledentallab.com/) (who was on episode 204) (https://www.voicesfromthebench.com/204) to give the perspective of actual real life lab use of a lot of the Zubler USA equipment.   Reality or fantasy? Non-fiction or fiction? Truth or deception? What head space are you living in these days?  Today's conversation on SBD is two regular guys, co-hosts Jared and Chris, talking candidly about what it means to live and behave with a high regard for other people, to live morally, ethically, and biblically. To live in the present and proximity of others in a world living separated on technology.  In the last decade, there has been a major shift of people living online and projecting what they want others to “think” is their life through social channels.  What are the long-term consequences of this, we do not yet know.  Ultimately it comes down to what matters most to us: Our relationships and connections to other human beings in a real, physical way -or- basing the quality of our lives on how many followers and likes we are getting.    “There is such thing as too much of a good thing and too much of a bad thing… and it's finding that healthy balance and healthy line of what are my priorities and how much time am I going to invest in that digital space.” – Jared Haley    Time Stamps   00:00 – The negatives of digital life  00:46 – Welcome to the 'Strong By Design' podcast  06:05 – Virtual vs. virtuous life: What is the difference?  13:09 – Are you losing touch with reality in the digital age?  21:58 – Hosts Jared Haley & Chris Wilson on why social media is all a façade  28:36 – The power of unpretentious living  34:01 – Jared and Chris on dealing with habitual sins in a digital age  40:18 – Jared and Chris share a powerful verse on how to live the Christian life    Connect w/ Chris & Jared:  Instagram – Chris  Instagram – Jared  Facebook – Chris  Facebook - Jared    Connect w/ CriticalBench:   Youtube  Facebook  Instagram  CriticalBench.com  StrongByDesignPodcast.com

For the past 23 years, a non-profit theater company called Only Make Believe has been creating and performing live in-person and virtual interactive theater for children in hospitals, care facilities, and special education programs. It started here in New York City but has since opened an office Washington, DC with some outreach in other cities as well. In the next episode you'll hear an encore presentation of my conversation with founder Dena Hammerstein. But for today, I'm sitting down with one of the board members and the director of their annual gala, who has known Dena and OMB since its inception. Joe DiPietro is certainly no stranger to theater and has been writing for the stage since 1991. His musicals and plays have received multiple awards and nominations on and off-Broadway, including Memphis starring Montego Glover and All Shook Up with Cheyenne Jackson. He talks about these two talented performers and shares his affection for Only Make Believe. We also get into two of his most recent Broadway shows: Diana, the Musical and Living on Love, his lone Broadway play so far (starring former WINMI guest Douglas Sills). Both shows had their own challenges coming to and surviving on Broadway. In fact, Diana filmed their stage production for Netflix during the Covid shutdown, and that movie notoriously went on to win Golden Raspberry Awards for Worst Screenplay and Worst Picture, among others. But Joe takes it all in stride and shares with us not only his passion for theater but also what has kept him going through the ups and downs. You can support Why I'll Never Make It as well through Subscriptions or Donations. 03:02 - Joe's introduction to theater 05:30 - Only Make Believe and its mission 13:58 - Montego Glover and Cheyenne Jackson 19:32 - How you can help OMB and WINMI 21:37 - Diana, the Musical 34:31 - Living on Love 45:16 - His theater writing process   Staying cooped up anywhere can be difficult for anyone, but facing the four walls of a hospital room 24/7 can be especially tough -- draining even. For more than 20 years, Only Make Believe has brought happiness to thousands of children in hospitals and care facilities in New York City and the DC area through live interactive theater. To date, approximately 95,000 children have been impacted by OMB's services, and that number continues to grow each year. Because OMB knows that “freeing a child's imagination is a valuable part of the healing process,” the organization works with a team of professional actors to provide interactive theater for sick children using nothing by a backdrop, along with a supply of props, costumes and imagination, of course. What happens next is quite magical to say the least. By the end of an OMB show, the same children who were having the worst day imaginable and didn't intend on participating are dancing, laughing and having fun. Professional actor Chris Wilson, who has since gone on to become OMB's Director of Programming & Communications, calls days like this a job well done. “Only Make Believe allows theater to become a truly immersive experience. The actors transform the space, interact with the audience, and adjust the show to the needs of each group of children,” Wilson said. “I am a firm believer that the performing arts have the ability to allow children to think and grasp concepts in a different way.” Learn more about Only Make Believe and how you can help.   The 2022 Only Make Believe Gala Join OMB as they celebrate those who inspire us with their dedication to philanthropy and raise funds to support our interactive theatre programming in hospitals, care facilities, and schools with special education programs. They have garnered so much the support for their virtual & hybrid galas over the past 2 years, and are certainly ecstatic to be BACK ON BROADWAY in person with former WINMI guests like Brad Oscar and Kathryn Allison. Only Make Believe's annual gala has earned a reputation as New York's most entertaining and unique charity event of the season! So join them if you can.

Everyone longs for a hero to save the day and most people all over the world love a good Superhero movie.  So then, what are the characteristics we associate with a hero that make them so powerful and amazing?  Well, heroes are brave, courageous, strong, and fearless.   Yes, those are great but what about this list of attributes… loving, compassionate, truthful, devoted, humble, meek, patient and oh yes, sacrificing.  While the first list gets the attention at the box office, the second list is the foundation of any great Superhero at his or her core.  And those attributes are also associated with the ultimate hero, Jesus of Nazareth. He is often the star of the movie, whether people realize it or not.  In his 3rd time on the Strong By Design podcast show, Frank Turek shares his insights about his latest book, Hollywood Heroes with host Chris Wilson.    “We all want to have a hero come in and save us and take us to a place of bliss… That's what Jesus actually does.” - Frank Turek    Time Stamps   01:01 – Welcome to the ‘Strong by Design' podcast  03:02 – Meet Frank Turek, speaker and award-winning author  05:30 – Frank discusses his new book, ‘Hollywood Heroes: How Your Favorite Movies Reveal God'  12:40 – Captain America vs. Iron Man: Discover their respective unique characteristics and how it relates to Jesus  20:50 – Frank reveals how Harry Potter points to the ultimate hero, Jesus  27:53 – Frank deep dives into the Star Wars saga  33:45 – What does C.S. A motion filed last week by John T. Lay and Peter M. McCoy Jr. — the two attorneys who were appointed as co-receivers in November 2021 to tally Murdaugh's assets — revealed even more shocking and unheard of banking practices at Palmetto State Bank. It's yet another layer of this story that shows us how powerful institutions treated Alex Murdaugh differently and therefore, potentially played a role in his alleged crimes.  In this episode, Mandy, Liz, and fan favorite attorney Eric Bland explain the new information uncovered by the receivers and what we know about what happened to the money.  Also this week, the State newspaper published an interesting piece about Chris Wilson — the third attorney on the infamous Omaha flight. Will Wilson be a witness IF murder charges arise? And a special thank you to our sponsors: Microdose.com, Priceline, Embark Vet, VOURI, Babbel, Article, and others.
