Make Music Day isn't about headliners, stages, or ticket sales. It's about showing up with your sound—whatever that is—and putting it out into the world. What started in 1982 as a spontaneous moment in the streets of France has become a global celebration of music made by everyone. And Aaron's been part of growing that idea across more than 150 U.S. cities—and beyond. There's no audition. No gatekeeping. Whether it's a punk band on a rooftop, a saxophonist on a stoop, or 200 people sight-reading Sousa marches in a park, it's all fair game. What makes this work? A custom-built matchmaking platform connects performers with unexpected venues—think record shops, laundromats, patios, public steps. There's even room for big group experiences like Mass Appeal, where companies donate instruments and anyone can join in. No gear? No problem.Aaron shares why this kind of open access matters, especially now. In a world of algorithm-driven listening and self-curated playlists, real connection—hearing music you didn't expect, played by someone you don't know—hits different. It's discovery in its purest form.Make Music Day isn't just about performance. It's about participation. It's about remembering that music doesn't need permission—it just needs a spark. So mark the date: June 21. Wherever you are, find a way to join in. Visit makemusicday.org to find your city or start your own.Because the world doesn't need more noise. It needs more music. In 2024, I birthed two creations: My son, Theo and the feature documentary, THE HONORABLE SHYNE. Back in the late 90s, Shyne was one of the first rappers Diddy signed to Bad Boy Records. After an explosive rise in Hip-hop, a life-altering criminal trial, and years of incarceration, Shyne's journey from rapper, to felon, to politician is one that has defied the odds. This leads me to today's guest, Marcus A. Clarke, the director of THE HONORABLE SHYNE. Marcus is a Brooklyn-born director and producer. He directed Apple's feature-length documentary, The WIZRD, following Atlanta rap superstar Future. Most recently, he directed three episodes of Netflix's reboot of Unsolved Mysteries V1 and three of eight installments in the Netflix Original Hip Hop docu-series Rapture, produced by Mass Appeal. While my human child is currently learning to crawl, my doc child is currently streaming on Hulu. Both were challenging and rewarding in equal measure.  During our conversation, we discuss the trials and tribulations of working on an international documentary, how to pivot when a relevant major controversy drops in the middle of shooting, and I finally get an honest answer about whether or not aliens truly exist. xx Carolina   SUBSCRIBE FOR MORE https://aop.beehiiv.com/   JOIN PATREON patreon.com/angleonproducers   LET'S CONNECT!

Glinda's iconic song from Wicked is catchy, confident, and completely wrong—at least when it comes to your marketing strategy. Just like that peppy song promises popularity is the answer to everything, we're often told that appealing to everyone is the key to business success. But is that actually true?In this episode, I'm exploring why being specific (and authentic!) beats being popular in business, and how to stop diluting your message trying to please everyone. We're thrilled to re-broadcast an insightful episode from the Sinica Podcast, where host Kaiser Kuo sits down with Bryce Whitwam to delve into the ever-evolving world of Chinese livestream e-commerce. Bryce's latest research highlights a fascinating shift: Chinese consumers increasingly gravitate toward smaller, more personalized livestream shows that foster greater interaction with hosts. While large-scale shows with millions of viewers still exist, they're gradually being replaced by micro-targeted streams on platforms like Xiaohongshu and Douyin, which offer a more authentic and engaging experience. This evolution carries significant implications for brands looking to connect with highly targeted audiences in China. It could hint at the future of livestream shopping in the West, especially as TikTok explores similar trends. 1. How did you first engage with the livestream e-commerce trend in China? 2. What's the history of livestream commerce, and how has it evolved since its inception? 3. How does livestreaming contribute to consumer engagement compared to traditional retail? 4. What differentiates Douyin, Xiaohongshu, and Taobao as livestream platforms? 5. What role does authenticity play in driving consumer trust in livestreaming? 6. How do demographics like age, gender, and location influence livestream shopping behavior? 7. What are the key differences between China's livestream strategies and the U.S.'s early adoption of TikTok Shop? 8. How are niche and microtargeted livestreams reshaping consumer behavior? 9. In our conversation with Dr. Sharon Saline, she talks about the origin of the sense of failure so many people with ADHD experience, and how it can be traced back to harmful messaging we've endured since childhood about how we are defective in some way or not okay. Dr. Sharon challenges us to change our inner dialogue and talk to ourselves with compassion, the way we would a close friend or a child in need.Dr. Sharon breaks down what emotional dysregulation looks like and how it shows up for women with ADHD in terms of overwhelm, time management challenges, working memory, and self-evaluation, aka, the way we perceive and speak to ourselves. People with ADHD tend to have "big feelings." Dr. Sharon explains why people with poor working memory also struggle with emotional control. Dr. Sharon guides us through the biology of ADHD and how brain structure as well as neurotransmitter function both play a role in emotional regulation. Dr. Sharon shares with us the mind-blowing concept of the "Takeback of the Day." She walks us through the protocol and "rules" and how transformative it can be in relationship repair. We talk about what it looks like when an ADHD mom "loses it," how terrible it feels, what's often at the root of it, and how to make it right. Dr. Sharon walks us through "do-overs" and repair when children are involved. In order to avoid the "Boy who cried wolf" cycle of damage and repair, Dr. Sharon encourages us to notice the signals that we are about to lose it so we can course correct before we go over the edge—she shares her STAR method which can be revolutionary for stopping the cycle of losing it. Sharon Saline, Psy.D., clinical psychologist and author of the award-winning book, “What your ADHD child wishes you knew: Working together to empower kids for success in school and life and The ADHD solution card deck” specializes in working with children, teens, adults and families living with ADHD, learning disabilities, twice exceptionality and mental health issues. She lectures and facilitates workshops internationally on topics such as ADHD and neurodivergence, executive functioning, the anxiety spectrum, motivation, perfectionism and working with different kinds of learners. B. Cox reviews Gang Starr's classic fourth album Hard To Earn as it turns 30. After the critical success of 1992's Daily Operation, Guru and DJ Premier took a brief hiatus to pursue individual projects. Guru launched his Jazzmatazz series and Premier became one of the most sought after producers in industry, working with the likes Jeru the Damaja, The Notorious B.I.G., Nas and KRS-One. Coming back to record their fourth, the group wanted to prove that they were versatile and wanted to show that they could stray from their jazz-sampled sensibilities on their previous album and could rock with a different sound.Heavily involved with the project was the Gang Starr Foundation, a collective that was aligned with the duo that included the likes of Jeru, the hip-hop duo Group Home, Big Shug, Freddie Foxx (Bumpy Knuckles), Afu-Ra among others. The project featured Jeru, both Lil Dap and Melachi the Nutcracker and Big Shug. Unlike Daily Operation, the album was produced under a wider variety of musical influences. The album featured two classic singles: "DWYCK" with hip-hop duo Nice & Smooth (which was supposed to be originally on Daily Operation and "Mass Appeal". The album was critically acclaimed upon release and reestablished Gang Starr as a force within hip-hop. It also served as a forerunner to a number of different albums over the next 18 months that were credited as being pivotal to the New York hip-hop scene being a power center once again in the hip-hop landscape. Our 38th episode of the Creative Flow: Thinkers and Change Agents Podcast Series features Erin Habes, a dedicated fashion and textile technology department lecturer and Runway Faculty Director at Buffalo State University who is passionate about being a catalyst for inclusive fashion in the Buffalo community.  Erin started her career in New York City, opened her store when she returned to Buffalo, and is well-known for producing large-scale fashion shows such as Runway and Mass Appeal. When appointed adjunct faculty in the fashion program, she learned about the Master's Degree in Creativity and Change Leadership at Buffalo State University, and it was what she was seeking to extend her education. She dedicated ten years to completing the degree and discusses how it continues to help her combine the fashion world and Deliberate Creativity. Erin has developed many partnerships through her work on fashion shows and often plays the role of facilitating meaningful collaborations between students, alums, and entrepreneurs, ensuring diverse perspectives are heard and celebrated. One great example is her work with Visit Buffalo Niagara Buffalo to showcase her home city's beautiful boutiques, fashion, and shopping.  Erin describes the creativity she uses in the classroom and how she helps her students and the Buffalo community champion diversity, equity, and inclusion in fashion. Using design thinking and a focus on empathy, she encourages her students to understand that they are responsible for the products that we are making. Don't miss this discussion of how Erin used AI to help her students get new ideas to create a collection for this year's Runway. To bring the Creative Community together, she is hosting an in-person mixer on January 18, at 7 pm, at Twin Petrels Selzer Company (1250 Niagara St, Buffalo, NY 14213). In 1996, Adrian Moeller and Patrick Elasik published the first issue of Mass Appeal Magazine.   In the nearly three decades that followed, Mass Appeal would grow from an underground graffiti zine into a culture-defining multi-faceted entertainment brand with a hand in everything from digital content, to music distribution, to full-length documentaries and much, much more.   However, the rise of Mass Appeal has been anything but straightforward. From barely legal circulation schemes and bankruptcy to a shocking death in the family, the brand has endured extraordinary challenges and still, through it all, risen like a Phoenix. On this week's episode of All Angles, we talk to co-founder Adrian Moeller, Creative Director Sacha Jenkins, as well as current CEO Peter Bittenbender and rap legend / partner Nas, to hear the tale of two Mass Appeals, and understand how a brand can rise, fall, and rise again, thanks to an ensemble cast of elite like-minded culture creators    See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
