My very special guest on this one-year-anniversary episode is Meaghan Strimas. Meaghan is the author of three collections of poetry, including Junkman's Daughter and A Good Time Had By All, which was shortlisted for the 2011 ReLit Award. She the editor of The Selected Gwendolyn MacEwen and co-edited Another Dysfunctional Cancer Poem Anthology with the late Priscila Uppal. She is a professor in the Faculty of Media and Creative Arts at Humber College, where she runs the Bachelor of Creative and Professional Writing degree. (She is also married... to me.) Meaghan's most recent book is Yes or Nope, which was published by Mansfield Press in 2016 and was awarded the Trillium Book Award for Poetry in the following year. Author Zoe Whittall said of that book that “the poetry in Yes or Nope is whip-smart and tenderhearted, funny and alive.” Meaghan and I talk about the shift that happened in her writing that allowed her to write Yes Or Nope under some difficult circumstances and time constraints, about working on the final books by her friends Priscila Uppal and Teva Harrison, books that, in both cases, were published posthumously, and about her new work, which she says further develops the stylistic freedoms she discovered in Yes or Nope and which will pay tribute to some of the writers who have inspired her. We meet her next guest, Jeneen Slaughter at her apartment in Raleigh. Jeneen's just got that super warm, fun, personality and you can tell right away it's gonna be a great interview. She grew up in Detroit, and she's a mom of four. Her father worked with cars at Chrysler, and although she's a daddies girl her father was abusive towards her mother. Her mom was depressed, and both her and her mom ended up in some codependency, really missing love and validation, and like many she grew up with low self-esteem. She talks about how in life, she was always looking for love to fill a void and how she made mistakes because she was coming from the wrong place. A place where her inner child was yet to be healed. She was finding codependency and thinking it was love. Now though, she's in such a great place, and it was really through raising her children, that she ultimately found true love and validation within, and for herself. She's a great example that you don't have to be a product of your upbringing, and you can stop the cycle of abuse. You can give children a better start and opportunity than we were given. She shares a message for the audience; to be fearless in life and to forget your past, to not stay bonded to it, and how for her, God pulled her out of it. Finishing with a fantastic quote from her, “don't let the junkman appraise your value, you are a diamond.” For behind the scenes content of the making of The Jar, meet the guests, see some footage of unreleased podcast episodes and more visit : https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCaTqB1dhDvl0Oh505ysdxTgTo be a guest on the show email us at thejarguest@gmail.com or visit our webpage : https://www.thejar.live/Follow The Jar on Instagram : https://www.instagram.com/thejar_podcast/Follow The Jar on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/podcast.thejarDisclaimer: The views stated in this episode are our guest's opinions and do not represent the views, beliefs or opinions of The Jar Podcast. Episode 65. Six Degrees of Patti LaBelle. The Queen. The Legendary Godmother of Soul. Hosted by Troy Saunders, Wanda T., and Arif St. Michael. In this part of our series on the music and career of the legendary Patti LaBelle, we focus on Patti's early years with The Bluebells and LaBelle. Our special guest is singer and songwriter Keith Anthony Fluitt, who has performed with Patti LaBelle, Nona Hendryx, Sarah Dash, Diana Ross, Roberta Flack, Bruce Springsteen, Pet Shop Boys, Michael Jackson, Harry Belafonte, and many others. We have asked him to be on the show since he has worked with Patti, Nona, and Sarah.Patti LaBelle grew up singing in a local Baptist choir, and in 1960 teamed with friend Cindy Birdsong to form a group called the Ordettes. A year later, following the additions of vocalists Nona Hendryx and Sarah Dash, the group was renamed the Blue Belles. With producer Bobby Martin at the helm, they scored a Top 20 pop and R&B hit in 1962 with the single "I Sold My Heart to the Junkman," and subsequently hit the charts in 1964 with renditions of "Danny Boy" and "You'll Never Walk Alone."The quartet, now known as Patti LaBelle & the Bluebelles, signed in 1965 to Atlantic, where they earned a minor hit with their version of the standard "Somewhere Over the Rainbow." In 1967, Birdsong replaced Florence Ballard in the Supremes. The remaining trio toured the so-called "Chitlin' Circuit" for the remainder of the decade before signing on with British manager Vicki Wickham in 1970. Wickham renamed the group simply LaBelle and pushed their music in a funkier, rock-oriented direction, and in the wake of their self-titled 1971 Warner Bros. debut, they even toured with the Who. The trio also collaborated with Laura Nyro on the superb R&B-influenced album “Gonna Take a Miracle”. By 1973, LaBelle had gone glam, taking the stage in wildly theatrical, futuristic costumes. A year later, they became the first African-American act to appear at New York's Metropolitan Opera House. The landmark performance introduced "Lady Marmalade," which in 1974 became their lone chart-topping single, produced by Allen Toussaint.Listen and subscribe to the BAAS Entertainment Podcast on Spotify, Amazon Music, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Deezer, iHeartRadio, Pandora, Podchaser, Pocket Casts and TuneIn. “Hey, Alexa. Halicki, the action auteur who never met a car he didn't crash, basically plays himself, and gets hounded all over Central California by assassins in cars and planes. It's thin on plot, but who cares, it's all about crashing cars and fun stunts. Paired with this are two beers: River Rocker Funday IPA and Cave Ale Amber. Dial us in this Saturday for the episode. In 1992 Grunge was the only genre of music on the radio and in college dorms around the US. Alice in Chains were riding high (literally) on the success of their first album Facelift and hit single Man in a Box. After a successful opening stint with Van Halen and a best selling EP, Sap, Jerry Cantrell, Layne Staley, Mike Starr and Sean Kinney were ready to rise to the top of the grunge/metal scene. But drugs, particularly heroin, were having a detrimental effect on the band which produced an album full of darkness, self-hatred and sickness. With titles like Sickman, Junkman, Down in a Hole, Hate to Feel, and Godsmack it's obvious Layne Staley is in pain but he delivers some extraordinary performances throughout the record.Selling over 6 million copies with over 6 million singles as well, Alice in Chains couldn't really capitalize on all that success as they couldn't afford to take Layne Staley out on the road for fear of him being arrested or ODing. Still, with hits like Would?, Them Bones, Angry Chair & Rooster, this record will always be remembered, though it should be seen as a cautionary tale.Ugly American Werewolf in London WebsiteYouTubeTwitterInstagramLInkTreewww.pantheonpodcasts.comCheck out our sponsor RareVinyl.com and use code podcast to save 10% off all orders!Want to win front row seats to Nick Mason's Saucerful of Secrets in the US?Enter here to win tickets and a chance to be on a Pantheon Podcast: https://pantheonpodcasts.com/nickmasonGet tickets here: https://www.thesaucerfulofsecrets.com/

Simplify Your Sales and Business meetings. Lisa Thal is an Author, Speaker, and Business Coach. She has over 35 years of marketing, sales, and leadership experience. She wrote the book "Three Word Meetings." Lisa coaches leaders on simplifying sales and business meetings with fun and interesting 3-word topics to motivate and inspire your sales team. Episode 168, What can you do when you face a temporary setback? What words inspire you to keep moving forward when facing setbacks? Here are a few of my favorite three words. Just Do it. It's worth it! You got this! Keep moving forward. Keep Showing up. Find a Way. Keep on digging. We've all been there – times we would have used any combination of the words above to keep us from facing defeat. I wanted to share the story from Napoleon Hill's book, "Think and Grow Rich," about how close we all are to succeed. We must keep showing up! After all, if we don't, there's no telling what opportunities we may miss. You know I love a story that involves anything with three. This story is about Three Feet From Gold. The story will have you digging and pushing yourself through any setbacks you may face because you could be one call, email, or proposal way from winning that business or personally finding success. Keyword to remember, temporary. One of the most common causes of failure is the habit of quitting when facing temporary defeat. Every person is guilty of this mistake at one time or another and gives up. The cliff notes version of the story is an uncle of R. U. Darby who was caught up in the hype by the gold fever in the gold-rush days and went west to dig and get rich. He staked a claim and went to work with a pick and shovel. The going was hard, but his lust for gold was his vision. After weeks of labor, he discovered shining ore. Ore is a valuable metal or mineral that can extract for gold. He needed machinery to bring the ore to the surface. He covered up the mine, retraced his footsteps to his home, and told his relatives and a few neighbors of the "strike." They got together money for the needed machinery and had it shipped. The first car of ore was mined and shipped to a smelter. The returns proved they had one of the richest mines in Colorado! A few more cars of that ore would clear the debts. Then the big profits would be rolling in. Down went the drills! Up went the hopes of Darby and Uncle! Then something happened! The vein of gold ore disappeared! They had come to the end of the rainbow, and the pot of gold was no longer there! They drilled on, desperately trying to pick up the vein again— all to no avail. Finally, they decided to give up and head home. They sold the machinery to a junk man for a few hundred dollars and took the train back home. The Junkman was resourceful and called in a mining engineer to look at the mine and do a little calculating. The engineer advised that the project failed because the owners were unfamiliar with "fault lines." His calculations located the ore of the vein about three feet from where Darby stopped drilling. I think you can imagine where this story is going. The "Junk" man took millions of dollars in ore from the mine because he knew enough to seek expert counsel before giving up. So what happened to Darby? He went into the business of selling life insurance. He remembers losing a considerable fortune because he stopped three feet from gold. Darby profited from the experience in his chosen work by the simple method of saying to himself, "I stopped three feet from gold, but I will never stop because someone says 'no' when I ask them to buy insurance." What a great lesson for all of us! He owes this to the lesson he learned from his experience in the gold mining business. Before success comes into our lives, we could face temporary defeat and, perhaps, some failure. When defeat overtakes you, quitting is the easiest and most logical thing. That is what the majority of us do. Most successes will come one step beyond the point at which defeat has overtaken. The question is, what are you three feet from achieving? Have you given up too soon, only to discover that you're close to success? My advice is to keep showing up and digging because you could be Three feet away from realizing your dreams. If nothing else, every defeat is a lesson showing you how to win the next time. If you think someone could benefit from this episode, share it, rate it, or subscribe for Free on Itunes or Spotify, so you don't miss out on the next three-word podcast.
