Do The Right Thing is one of the most important films ever made. It is the story of a hot day in Brooklyn that dives into race relations, community love, and just regular people having a regular day. The movie was great then and is still great now.

To celebrate our first anniversary, we are spotlighting two of our favorite filmmakers and artists. In today's episode, we explore the collaborations of Spike Lee and Denzel Washington, a potent and mesmerizing cinematic duo. You, our listening audience, voted for our first film - the surprising and gripping heist film Inside Man. Second - Spike and Denzel team up for one of the most seminal films of the last century, Malcolm X. Finally, Spike's eccentric follow-up to Do The Right Thing features Denzel Washington as an egocentric jazz musician in Mo' Better Blues. We are grateful to explore these films with returning guest and friend of the podcast, Trey Armstrong. ❗️SEND US A TEXT MESSAGE ❗️Support the showSign up for our Patreon for exclusive Bonus Content.Follow the podcast on Instagram @gimmethreepodcastYou can keep up with Bella on Instagram @portraitofacinephile or Letterboxd You can keep up with Nick: on Instagram @nicholasybarra, on Twitter (X) @nicholaspybarra, or on LetterboxdShout out to contributor and producer Sonja Mereu. All this & much, much less! Debts No Honest Man Can Pay started in 2003 at WHFR-FM (Dearborn, MI), moved to WGWG-FM (Boiling Springs, NC) in 2006 & Plaza Midwood Community Radio (Charlotte, NC) in 2012, with a brief pit-stop at WLFM-FM (Appleton, WI) in 2004.
In this episode of the show we are touching base with Spike Lee again and this time we are taking on a double bill of Red Hook Summer and Da Sweet Blood of Jesus. Over the course of our conversation you will hear us talk about Red Hook Summer functioning as a spiritual sequel to Do The Right Thing, how it's a dense sermon spanning gentrification, cultural homelessness of working class America, false prophets and the fallacy of American Dream and how it is the most personal film Spike Lee made since the late 90s. We also talk about how Da Sweet Blood of Jesus uses an existing genre movie to take the temperature of American upper classes, how Spike Lee uses the themes of vampirism to discuss greed and detachment and how this movie forms a duet with Red Hook Summer. Another great reminder came my way today from a wonderful difference maker, Coach Ray Ostrowski (@CoachRayO3313) who is a former student that I got to know while working during a few of my 34 years in teaching and now he is an awesome teacher & coach himself. He's not only helping his students and players, but plenty of people like me. Part of what he said as intro to this post was this: “Part of maturing is establishing the strength to persevere and recognizing that the work you do in the darkness will eventually come to the light in due time.” You see, I view myself as still maturing… even at my age.

The gang spends one hot day in Bed-Stuy this week, as they review the classic Spike Lee film, Do The Right Thing (1989). Spike Lee sort of stars in his 3rd feature after She's Gotta Have It and School Daze, taking place on a sweltering humid day in Brooklyn. Sal's Pizzeria is a standard eatery and hang out spot in the neighborhood until it becomes the site of a perceived racial injustice. Featuring a cast of characters that are super memorable, and a cast of actors that is a variatble who's who of Hollywood go-to's, this movie should be required viewing for sheer entertainment, and the complex social messaging wrapping it all together. No Tyler this week, so tune in to hear Joseph and Tyler's take on the classic film. SEASON 10 The Learning Leader Daily Leadership Tips and Discussions As a leader, you must do the right things for the right reasons. At least that's what John C. Maxwell says in his new book High Road Leadership. In this book he writes about how to “bring people together in a world that divides.” Over the next couple of weeks, I will be discussing some of my takeaways from the book, chapter by chapter. I would highly recommend you picking up your very own copy of this book, and here is a direct link to the book on Amazon… order it today! “High Road Leadership: Bringing people together in a world that divides.” By John C, Maxwell, https://amzn.to/4cWxury **To learn more about how Paul can walk you and your team through a 12-week High Road Leadership Mastermind, contact him at Paul@CLCTeam.com and put “High Road Leadership” in the subject block. A Great Book on Self Talk: “What to Say When You Talk to Yourself'” by Shad Helmstetter, https://amzn.to/47rO3uu Thank you for listening. I'm Paul Grau Jr., the host of this show, and I'm excited about Season 10. This season will focus on “The Learning Leader” and/or as we refer to it here at The CLC Team, “The Expanding Leader. Every episode will primarily focus on the lifelong journey of expanding your knowledge of leadership, and I will try to give you a daily takeaway to put what you learn into action. My goal is that you learn something that you can take immediate action on, and see how powerful expanding your leadership can be. Have you ever wondered why it's so difficult for a group of leaders to norm or be consistent? Well, it's because every leader is unique and has their own style and way of leading their team. By coming together and forming a bond in your organizations leadership team, you can begin norming better than ever before. I use the DISC assessment with every client and team I work with and have found it to be a real game-changer for the entire team. This is certainly no different when you have a group of leaders together. In order for them to work together in unison, they have to begin by knowing each other very well. That's where the DISC comes in, so I will mix the DISC behavioral styles in throughout this series. I am a DISC Certified Trainer and Consultant and have worked with behavioral styles for over 20 years. I am certified through the John Maxwell Leadership Team and have worked with hundreds of teams. If you are interested in having me work with your team leaders or if you want to purchase a DISC assessments for yourself and your team, please contact me via email at Paul@CLCTeam.com If you want to dive in deeper, here are some great books to read and study about the behavioral styles: “Surrounded by Idiots” by Thomas Erikson https://amzn.to/4gphp0D “Full Spectrum Success: Living and Leading in True Color” by Jacob Adamo https://amzn.to/3zglV0A “The Four Tendencies” by Gretchen Rubin https://amzn.to/4dVCMVB “Wired That Way” by Marita Littauer. https://amzn.to/4dZHXUj “Personality PLUS” by Florence Littauer. https://amzn.to/4d1jQmT Please listen daily (Mon – Friday) as Paul focuses on not only giving tips about how to be a great leader, but also a leader who is respected, a leader who people want to follow, a leader who can confidently navigate their way through both personal and professional challenges, a leader who is not afraid to share their faith while living it out, a leader who knows his/her purpose and lives to fulfill that purpose every day, and a leader who has no regrets! Originally released as episode #138 on 10/7/21, now tweaked and remastered for Summer Vacay 2024! "Coming together out of the fertile environment of Adelphi University and its college radio station, Public Enemy burst forth with a wall of power, a collective that changed Hip-Hop and helped forge an unholy alliance with Metal! Their song, "Fight The Power" played an actual role in Spike Lee's "Do The Right Thing," which put the group on the radar of a much wider audience. In this week's adventure, we explore the band's roots as a loosely associated group of artists who converge via WBAU, coalescing as The Bomb Squad, with unreal "solid work" being set off. It's a rambling, veering off-kilter look at PE, who have been part of both Imbalanced Brothers' musical life! Hats off to the samplers, the DJs scratchin' it out, the MCs sayin' it! Give it up for The Funky Drummer!!! Take time to learn stuff about stuff you already know stuff about! Listen to this cool episode, and then get caught up here!!!
