Ghibli Fest 2023, a yearly re-screening of Studio Ghibli films, may have kicked off back in March but it's upcoming re-release has historical significance. That being the 1997 film “Princess Mononoke,” a film that was renowned filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki's first, global box office hit, making close $200 million. It's domestic and global success at the time was unmatched… up until the 2001 film “Spirited Away.” Fans revisiting these features comes at a time where Miyazaki reaches the next chapter in his storytelling, with his final film “The Boy and the Heron” having released in Japan in July. No official release date globally has been announced, but North America will be blessed with a screening as the Toronto International Film Festival opens its festivities with Miyazaki's last film as a director. Today on AirTalk, we talk about Studio Ghibli's growth in the global box office, Hayao Miyazaki's role in that, and the legendary filmmaker's legacy. Joining guest host Austin Cross is LAist & Animation Scoop film critic Charles Solomon, and Steve Alpert, former overseas promotion manager for Studio Ghibli.
Folks, first, we are so sorry we have not been in your ears for so long. Second, we are so back. Ben and Liam are back to your podcast platform for a quick episode outside our normal themed episodes to shake off the rust. We chat about some pieces we've seen recently. Liam talks Babylon, The Big Sleep, and All The President's Men, while Ben fills us in on Hour of the Wolf, the films of Derek Jarman, and Ghibli Fest! We also spend some time rambling on other foolish topics. Thanks for tuning back in :)
Jim and Jessie dive deep into the world of Ponyo to celebrate Ghibli Fest
On this episode, join Kate, Ed, Dennis, Diana, and Sam as they discuss the Spirited Away stage play adaptation that was a limited run in North American theaters. Thanks to GKIDS for bringing this over during the 2023 Ghibli Fest, and here's hoping that they bring more over. Note: there will not be a plot summary for this as Spirited Away was covered in depth on a previous episode. 0:00:00 Introduction & The Watchlist 0:26:20 Some Anime News 0:34:21 Production Notes 0:42:36 Preamble & Music 0:50:53 Inspired Set Design 1:02:29 Costumes & Puppetry 1:23:06 Some Favorite Scenes 1:33:06 Some Minor Nitpicks 1:39:41 Final Thoughts & Kanpai Support the show by either donating to our Ko-Fi link below or purchasing the Spirited Away anime on Blu-ray through our Amazon affiliate link. Tonight on GeekNights we review the 2023 animated series Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur. The animation and style are fantastic, and if you have or know kids this is a show for them! In the news, Rym bought a new wallet, don't watch any more Made in Abyss, the NHL did a cool telemetry-driven hockey broadcast, and Ghibli Fest 2023 is on!

On our last episode, we exposed the GHIBLI CONSPIRACY - subliminal messages covertly sown into Hayao Miyazaki’s films to brainwash the children of the world! We discussed the secrets hidden in each of the films shown during GKids’ 2017 Ghibli Fest, covering all except for one, Howl’s Moving Castle. Now, to celebrate its 15th anniversary, GKids has brought Howl back to the big screen, giving us a chance to close the case on the conspiracy once and for all! We discuss the film’s anti-war messages, its themes of independence and self-perception, and just exactly what that madman Miyazaki is really mad at… AT LONG LAST, THE TRUTH WILL BE REVEALED!!!!!!! You thought we were done releasing all the podcasts we recorded in 2017. You were mistaken. Very mistaken. Throughout 2017, the Mavericks attended GKids and Fathom Event’s first Ghibli Fest, hoping to unfurl the secrets behind Hayao Miyazaki’s animated masterpieces. Instead, they discovered something different… something darker. A conspiracy. THE GHIBLI CONSPIRACY. This podcast was a mistake. Like anime. But enough is enough. The truth must be heard. Brace yourselves, because once you listen, you’ll never be able to look at these films and the man behind them the same way again.
