Manga Mavericks EP. 215: Gakkyu Hotei (School Judgment)

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 24, 2022 103:32

On this episode of Manga Mavericks, Colton & Lum are joined by David from the Shonen Flop podcast for what is possibly the biggest trial of the century! As they will have to argue why Gakkyu Hotei (aka School Judgment) is one of, if not the worst manga they have ever covered on the show!! Gakkyu Hotei being a series written by Nobuaki Enoki and illustrated by Takeshi Obata (also known as the artist of both Death Note & Bakuman), centered in a world where Japanese grade schools are corrupted to the point where the government creates the School Judgment System! Where elementary school students can take their grievances and discuss them during Classroom Arbitration sessions! Trials for children by children! With the series' protagonist and defense attorney, Abaku Inugami, solving all kinds of cases ranging from who dismembered the classroom pet to figuring out the identity of local snack (NOT DRUG) dealers, all while getting closer to finding out who murdered his old classmates on that fateful day known as the Bloody Classroom Session!! Now you might be saying to yourself, "Huh, that doesn't sound too bad!", but trust us, its not only mostly mediocre, but also contains a lot of weird, creepy choices that Enoki himself is a little too boastful about and proud of. What are those choices, you ask? Enter the court and find out!! A story about a single father who has to face his internalized prejudices in order to accept certain members of his family for who they are. The first discussion comes from Episode 35 of the podcast when we went over our first impressions of the series with Pantheon's release of the first volume back in 2017, with the second discussion being the bonus podcast we released on our Patreon covering the rest of the series three years later in 2020! A collection of comics from Akira Toriyama spanning across multiple decades of his career from before the start of Dr Slump to near the end of Dragon Ball! Toriyama is one of our favorite manga artists of all time, so there was no way we wouldn't cover more of his comics at some point, especially with a new collection of his stories that have never been released before officially in English until recently! We cover this collection of over 20 stories as exhaustively as possible, as Mike provides a lot of much needed context for the publication of a lot of them and pinpoint where Toriyama was in his career at the time of each of them, while Darren provides his perspective as a fellow artist and what makes Toriyama's comics craft so interesting even as far back as his pre-Dr Slump days! Join us as we rediscover our love of Toriyama's works and reevaluate why he's simply one of the best at what he does! It may have taken a thousand years for the dragon warriors to reunite, but it only took us a couple of weeks! We still had so much more to explore in the world of Yona of the Dawn that we knew we had to return to answer the questions of the people! We're once again rejoined by our own Happy Hungry Bunch, the Dragon Warriors of the Yona fandom; Marion, host of the Good Friends Anime Club, MHA Podcast, Shaman King Podcast, & The View From the Top!, Caitlin, editor for Anime Feminist and writer for Anime News Network and her own blog I Have a Heroine Problem, and Olive St. Sauver, writer for ButWhyTho?! We discuss several thoughtful questions curious about what we think sets Yona apart from other series, as well as the strengths of its titular protagonist and her growth throughout the story. In the process, we also interrogate questions that attempt to pedestalize Yona above other shojo manga as we challenge broad assumptions about what shojo manga are like and female protagonists should be that come from perspectives seemingly formed through either innocent inexperience or myopic misogyny. We also delve deeper into themes and motifs that define the series, including various forms of symbolism in the manga and the conflicts between divinity and humanity, destiny and free will. Manga Mavericks EP. 198: "Yona of the Dawn"

Play Episode Listen Later May 7, 2022

It's the dawn of a new podcast adventure as we're embarking on a journey into one of the most epic modern fantasy adventure manga, Mizuho Kusanagi's Yona of the Dawn. And joining us on our quest are some legendary dragons of the fandom, Marion, host of the Good Friends Anime Club, Saturday Night Shoggy, MHA Podcast, Shaman King Podcast, & The View From the Top!, Caitlin Moore, editor for Anime Feminist and writer for Anime News Network and her own blog I Have a Heroine Problem, and Olive St. Sauver, writer for ButWhyTho?! Yona of the Dawn follows the journey of the eponymous Yona, the crimson-haired teenage princess of a pan-Asian amalgam of Korea, Japan, & China called Kohka. Yona is in love with her first cousin Su-won and has a love-hate relationship with her bodyguard Hak, both of whom have been her longtime childhood friends. She confesses her love for Su-won on her 16th birthday, but when she goes to tell her father about her feelings, she finds him being murdered by Su-won himself. Su-won has staged a coup against King Il because the latter's pacifistic and non-interventionist policies have put the country in dire straits and as revenge for murdering his father, Yu-hon. At the urging of his advisor, Kei-shuk, Su-won also nearly executes Yona, but she is rescued by Hak and they go on the run. Over the course of her journey and after meeting and befriending the legendary Dragon Warriors, Yona gets stronger and more confident in her battle skills. She realizes that the people of Kohka are suffering from a ton of problems due to her father's mismanagement, so rather than reclaim the throne, she resolves to do what she can as a wandering nomad going around the kingdom to help improve the living conditions of the people and stamp out criminals and corrupt government officials exploiting them. But as Yona and her companions achieve results in helping improve things in the Kohka kingdom and neutralizing foreign threats, their reputation grows amongst the people who believe in the legend of the dragon warriors and start worshipping her and them as godly beings, dividing the loyalties of the people between Yona and Su-won and threatening to factionalize the unified kingdom that the latter so desired to create... We discuss our thoughts on Yona's growth as a heroine, the complicated relationship between her, Hak, and Su-won, and how the series challenges the concepts of prophecy and the divine authority, exploring what it means to be a leader and what it takes to lead. We also gush and argue about our favorite Dragon Warriors, and champion our favorite supporting characters like Yun, Riri, and (perhaps surprisingly?) Tae-jun! We also speculate about the direction of the story, debate the merits of the Xing arc, explore Yona's obliviousness and Hak's brazenness in their slow-burn romance, and explain just why Yona is both a throwback to the 90s shojo fantasies of yore while also being the best possible version of them, and why it satisfies a craving for more action-focused shojo fantasy works that're so few and far between these days. Yona's story and world are so rich with detail that we couldn't contain our discussion to just one podcast, so look forward to another equally meaty Q&A podcast next week to go over even more of our thoughts and theories on the series! For a complete list of links and Community Shout-Outs mentioned in this episode, please visit this podcast's webpage at: http://all-comic.com/2022/manga-mavericks-ep-198-yona-of-the-dawn/ With the recent news of the potential overturn of Roe v. Wade by the Supreme Court and thereby nationwide abortion rights protections, we're also providing a list of links to abortion funds and organizations to help spread awareness of ways pregnant people can find safe access and financial aid for abortion services. We will keep our eye open for other Abortion access funds and organizations to shout out and promote in the future as this situation develops. We'll do our best to get involved in other community efforts to support the fight for abortion rights and stay informed and educated on what's going on and how to best use our platform to help spread awareness as best we can. Even if there's a limit on how much one of us alone can do to challenge the Court's decision, donating to these Funds and Organizations fighting the good fight and helping people in your own community who needs access to clinics and resources can make a difference, and even if that's all you can do right now sometimes that's more than enough to matter. On this episode of Manga Mavericks, Colton & Lum are joined once again by John from the Mercury Falcon Youtube channel, as well as first time guest and manga letterer, Phil Christie, to finally discuss one of Shotaro Ishinomori's many classic manga titles with Kamen Rider! One of two of the biggest long lasting tokusatsu hero franchises Ishinomori was responsible for creating about a man who, after being kidnapped by an evil organization known as Shocker and turned into a cyborg, dons the superhero persona of Kamen Rider, the defender of justice! Join us as we gush about Ishinomori's amazing art and rave about how fun the series was to read, but also how we feel the development of both the story and the characters fall a bit flat due to the comic needing to stay consistent with the then concurrently airing television series. Plus, John gives us a lot of history on the background and development of Kamen Rider, while Phil discusses his process while working on the lettering for the manga's release from Seven Seas! Nagata Kabi has explored her struggles with her physical and mental health in her previous memoirs, and now turns her attention to one of her biggest lifelong hurdles - love. Okazu founder and yuri scholar extraordinaire Erica Friedman joins us once again to discuss the latest chapter in Kabi's ongoing and evolving memoir narrative, My Wandering Warrior Existence. Kabi uses the evocative image and anecdote of holding a wedding dress photo shoot as a springboard for exploring her desire to love and be loved, and her frustrations figuring out how to do that, including her experiences with online dating apps. We come to understand why she's afraid to meet and form relationships with people, a response that stems from lingering issues about her own negative self-image, and a mistrust of other people in part caused by, CONTENT WARNING, a horrifically traumatic sexual assault she experienced as a child. Which, because of the particular descriptiveness and upsetting nature of the story, we encourage you to use your discretion and the timestamps in the podcast breakdown below as to whether you rather skip that part of the discussion. But lest you fear Wandering Warrior finds Kabi drowning in her sorrows and traumas, we discuss how the book instead reflects the emotional growth and self-awareness that Kabi has come to understand over her previous books. This book finds Kabi taking in her memoirs in a new, confident direction with a clear thesis and structured storytelling designed with a message to the reader in mind, and we explore how it represents a positive direction for her as an artist and storyteller as we appreciate the messages she imparts in the book and her experiences and thoughts resonate with our own. Kabi may still be a wanderer in the landscape of love, but like a warrior, she's held firm in her resolve to find happiness, and we're more than happy to travel with her on her journey into whatever unknown territory the future may bring. Hello, darlings! Welcome back to #LumSquad, a podcast hosted by @LumRanmaYasha and @ProdTally devoted to the wonderful and wacky world of Rumiko Takahashi's Urusei Yatsura! We're approaching the 2/3rds mark of the series' volume count as we head into the first half of the 11th omnibus! Not only that, we're entering one of the strongest periods for the series to date, and this volume in particular is filled with classic chapters that offered so much to talk about that we went on for two hours on just the first half alone! We had good reason to, however, as we discuss iconic stories like the “Blue-White Flames of Anger” arc and pivotal character-building chapters centered on Ataru and Lum's relationship like “The Glove of Love and Conflict” and the deceptively emotional “Lum Becomes a Cow!” We also discuss the various hilarious chapters in-between, from the absurdly extravagant festive farce of Mendo's Christmas Party to transformation antics gone unthinkably wrong! We also spend a lot of time discussing recurring themes and notable details that pervade the series in these chapters, like Kosuke and Torajima becoming more prominent, the Ryunosuke/Shinobu ship, the differences between Lum and Oyuki as alien royalty, the shift in Lum's relationships with both her friend group and Shinobu, and a whole lot more! It's a podcast stuffed full of surprises and while we haven't hidden a bomb inside, we still think you'll have a blast! In which we visit Kabi during her time recovering in the hospital from severe pancreatitis due to her excessive drinking, as well chronicling through her artist's journey of deciding between working on either fiction or non-fiction. We discuss our thoughts on this book in particular and once again grapple with the difficult and complicated feelings we get from reading Kabi's works as pieces of entertainment, as well as her journey as an artist up to this point. One of these days our convention report podcasts won't take months after the con is over to come out. Today is not that day. But hey, Anime NYC kept us waiting too! After a pandemic-imposed hiatus, Anime NYC returned in 2021 with its highest-ever attendance… and longest lines. Was the wait worth it… or was it just more waiting? Has Anime NYC grown too big for the Javits Center to handle? Was it even a good idea to congregate fifty thousand anime nerds together during a global pandemic? Was Anime NYC a super event… or just a superspreader event? Lum and VLord are joined by their usual gang of friends - Sakaki, Jecka, and Marion - to answer the call to all these questions and discuss the highs and lows of Anime NYC 2021! Welcome back to #LumSquad, a podcast hosted by @LumRanmaYasha and @ProdTally devoted to the wonderful and wacky world of Rumiko Takahashi's Urusei Yatsura! Urusei Yatsura's getting a new anime!!! The Urusei Yatsura All-Stars reboot was announced on New Year's Eve to bring in the year of the tiger with electrifying excitement! All us Urusei Yatsura fans went out of our minds with this out of the world announcement, and we couldn't wait to talk about it on the show. Which is why right at the stroke of midnight (central US time), we recorded a special podcast covering everything we know about the upcoming anime and what to expect from it! That's right, we recorded our first new podcast of the year literally right when the year began! I wish I could've released this episode as timely as we released it, but hey, at least it isn't out of date yet! Even if it's a little late, this episode is still special because it's our very first episode to have special guests! That's right, we're joined by VLord, host of many podcasts including the Shogakukan-focused podcast Saturday Night Shoggy, and Sakaki, co-host of Saturday Night Shoggy and webmaster of the Weekly Shogakukan Edition blog and Twitter, whose tweet about the news went viral hours before it was officially confirmed! We discuss our reactions to the leaks before the official confirmation came in, our thoughts on the new studio and actors, wonder if Nagotoro is the modern-day Lum, worry whether Ataru's perviness would offend modern viewers, what stories we expect to be adapted, and whether we think the new show will broaden UY's worldwide popularity! So join us as we put weird and weird together yet again and embrace a new anime that'll make things even weirder! Manga Mavericks EP. 187: "Letterers Roundtable"

Take the Manga Mavericks 2021 Podcast Survey and get entered into our FREE MANGA giveaway! Click the link to take the survey and listen to the show for details! - https://s.surveyplanet.com/1m409qcf We all know manga is translated from japanese to english, but do you ever think about how the actual text is placed on the page, and who places it there? It doesn't magically appear out of thin air - manga letterers are the folks responsible for putting the words you read on the page, which is not always an easy task, as lettering is more than just fitting words into a balloon, which is hard enough in of itself, but requires creativity and ingenuity to replicate the feel of the original text with creative solutions and hand-drawn effects, and even cleaning, touching up, and redrawing the original art! We've had several manga Letterers on the show to discuss their work before, but today is an especially red-letter day, because we've brought on a dream team, some of the best in the business, to spell out what a manga letterer does and lay down the letter of the law for a letter-perfect walkthrough of the art, process, and career of manga lettering! Joining us on for this auspicious and ambitious roundtable are returning special guests, longtime lettering enthusiast and breakout letterer Aidan, (letterer of Otaku Elf, School Zone Girls, and Toki), Final Fantasy XXV and COR enthusiast Ace Christman (letterer of Black Clover, World Trigger, and Goodnight Punpun), the hashtag LEGEND ™ himself Brandon Bovia (letterer of Kaiju No. 8, Dragon Ball Super, and Snow White with the Red Hair), and welcoming to the first time on the show a real lettering maverick, the queen of letterers - Sara Linsley (letterer of Sweat and Soap, Dandadan, That Wolf Boy is Mine!)! Join us as we spend over three hours discussing the ins and outs of Manga Lettering, including different workflows, the best and worst fonts, working with editors and handling corrections, and many humorous anecdotes about the joys (and frustrations) of the craft! We discuss how essential the art of lettering is, and how it can really define the look of the series just as much as the rest of the artwork, even if many readers don't consciously pay attention to it. We also explore how the work of letterers has evolved over the years, and what publishers can and should do to help make their jobs easier. We cover a lot of ground that will hopefully give you all great insight into one of the most interesting aspects of comics, and it's a bread-and-butter letter of thanks from us to all the hardworking folks responsible for making the words in our comics fun to read! As we've outlined on the show and in our Community Shout-outs, there is a wealth of resources out there to learn more about the craft and career of lettering and I'm glad that even more attention is being brought to discussing the work of manga letterers in particular. I hope that our own letterer's roundtable has provided a worthwhile and valuable contribution to this collection of helpful and educational resources and I hope we'll continue to produce and provide even more spotlights on the work of different letterers and the lettering of different series in upcoming podcasts and profiles now and in many years to come! Hello darlings! Welcome back to #LumSquad, a podcast hosted by @LumRanmaYasha and @ProdTally devoted to the wonderful and wacky world of Rumiko Takahashi's Urusei Yatsura! It's time for I, I, You, and I to review the Urusei Yatsura: Only You! We're so excited to finally have the films streaming on Crunchyroll and coming to blu-ray courtesy of Discotek, and so we'll be periodically interrupting our coverage of the manga to review each movie! What better occasion to start than on our 10th episode AND just ahead of the upcoming blu-ray release of Only You coming later this month! We're starting off with the series's first movie, Only You, a much-beloved crowd-pleaser that director Mamoru Oshii was loath to make! While clearly a love-letter to the series, do we agree with Oshii that it's more of an extended episode than a “real film?” We discuss the fascinatingly fraught production history of Only You, analyze Elle as a parallel to both Lum and Ataru, describe the multitude of references and callbacks to the series, and evaluate the film's iconic music and far less esteemed english dub! They say a rose by any other name would smell just as sweet, but where does this first feature fall among the other films in the franchise? Only you will find out by listening to our show! Hello, darlings! Welcome back to #LumSquad, a podcast hosted by @LumRanmaYasha and @ProdTally devoted to the wonderful and wacky world of Rumiko Takahashi's Urusei Yatsura! Our discussion on Urusei Yatsura Volume 10 was so long we had to split it up across multiple recordings for different parts! This discussion is an interesting mix of different recordings in of itself, because we had originally discussed the first two chapters in this episode, the “Love Letter Trouble” two-parter, at the tail end of our previous recording that you heard in our last episode, and our discussion of the remaining chapters in the volume was split down the middle into two different recordings because of an audio mishap on AC's end that froze his Audacity during our discussion of the “Lover Thief” two-parter. All this to say that this episode is still kind of a weird frankenstein of different recordings, which is why you may hear some differences in the audio during different parts of it. That said, I think the sum of these parts still makes for an excellent episode and discussion of the chapters included in the second half of UY's 10th omnibus volume, effectively the 20th volume of the original tankobons! We talk about a really uneven collection of chapters in this one, featuring a lotta stories about love troubles! We've got Ryoko trying to run the bases with Tobimaro, starcrossed peach spirits who can't get a head, ghost girls with puppy love, giant octopuses gone wild, Kurama's last-ditch attempt to get laid, and even some character development for Rei?! It's a wild ride as we go over some really great chapters, as well as one of the series' absolute worst! Which of these stories did we love and which one did we loathe? You'll just have to tune in and join us as we go on another journey into the lovely world of Urusei Yatsura!
