Welcome back to Manga Mavericks @ Movies! The show where we don't just talk smack about movies, we celebrate them! We're back after (check notes) FOUR YEARS(?!) to talk about the year of film in 2024! It's been a long time since we've done one of these, so you may be wondering why we were so eager to record a podcast about 2024 films than years past. While 2024 was a bad year for most of the world, it was a pretty strong year for entertainment all around, including movies. While it got off to a rough start with movies that didn't click with audiences and hit at the box office, by the end of the year we got a lot of interesting and entertaining gems that delighted film critics and moviegoing audiences alike. I think that's why we have an Oscars race this year where you have a lot of films people have seen and are genuinely enthusiastic about, plus Emilia Perez for some reason, and the lack of clear overwhelming favorites like Oppenheimer and Everything, Everywhere, All At Once like the past two years has made the Awards season really competitive, to the point where it's hard to predict what will win at the Oscars this year, especially in the Best Picture race. Some critics and commentators consider 2024 a weaker year for film than years previous, but personally, this was the most engaged moviegoing year I've ever had. This is the first year since I (Lum) started using Letterboxd over a decade ago where I managed to see over 100 movies that came out that year within the year itself! Only time will tell which films will be remembered as part of the canon of great and essential cinema, but as far as I'm concerned, there were plenty of great films that came out in 2024 that I adore and want to explore, so we're here to discuss them so much more! Vlord and I each count down our Top 10 favorite films from 2024, celebrating the films we enjoyed and resonated with the most. Then, we discuss all the films and categories nominated at the 97th Academy Awards, giving our thoughts on the nominations picked for each category and speculating on who the Academy will pick as winners. As someone who has listened to lots of Oscars-related podcasts over the course of this Awards season, I can guarantee you that you won't find a longer discussion of the Short Film categories on any other film podcasts! So get listen up and listen good to our thoughts on the best and most awarded movies of 2024 (not necessarily the same) in our nearly 4-hour long podcast that's probably longer than this year's Oscars ceremony itself! On this episode of Manga Mavericks, Colton & Lum are joined by tokusatsu enthusiasts, Grant & Patrick, from the Super Senpai Podcast, to discuss Shotaro Ishinomori's original Himitsu Sentai Gorenger manga released by Seven Seas! Not only a comic which ran in Weekly Shonen Sunday back in 1975 that served as the tie-in to the television show of the same name, but was a starting point for what would eventually become another staple iconic tokusatsu franchise just as big, if not bigger, than Kamen Rider! While the comic itself is much more transparently a commercial product tie-in for an existing tv show than Kamen Rider was, that doesn't mean there isn't a lot to love! Join us as we discuss why Gorenger, as well as Super Sentai and tokusatu as a whole, is fun! Enjoy!! Hi yo, Yolo! Hey there folks in tv land! Don't touch that dial, and don't change the channel, you're tuned into the right podcast station - welcome back to Manga Mavericks On TV! It's been a long time since our previous episode covering the first season of Central Park, but we're finally back with another special episode because we got a special opportunity to both cover the premiere episodes of the newest season of adult swim's aussiest animated series, Yolo: Silver Destiny, as well as interview its creator, the incredible Michael Cusack and the show's lead actors Sarah Bishop and Todor Manojlovic! As you'll hear in the interview and review, I really enjoyed the show and getting a chance to preview the new season before it premiered, and had a lot to discuss with Michael, Sarah, and Tod about their thoughts on the show's dip into serialization, how the show's look has been refined without losing the charm of its animation, the series' focus on female friendship and toxic relationships, and where the show may be headed in the future! Plus, Michael and Todor answer where the season's new title, Silver Destiny, comes from - and you may be surprised to learn what's in a name! Before we get into the show proper, I want to take a commercial break to announce that this year's annual Manga Mavericks podcast survey is now live! Vote for your favorite podcast episodes, guests, thumbnails, and more from 2022, and let us know your favorite parts of the show, your podcast preferences, and what you'd like to see us cover in 2023 and beyond! Plus, all participants of the survey will be entered into a special giveaway to win a manga of their choosing, including volumes of series we've covered before on the show, convention exclusives, limited releases, and select issues of Shonen Jump! The survey will be live until February 28th, so get your votes in now! Looking forward to learning what your guys' favorite episodes and parts of the show were last year, and what we can look forward to making for you in 2023 and beyond! And now, let's get right back to the show and this party started, and take our destined leap into a sliver of Silver Desitny with our interview with Michael, Sarah, and Todor, and stick around after these messages for my thoughts the first few episodes of the season and my pitch to watch it for so many reasons! Hello everybody and welcome back to Manga Mavericks @ Movies, the show where we don't talk smack about movies, we celebrate them, except for the rare occasions we do talk smack about movies, but that wouldn't be very Christmasy of us would it? Yes, it's been a while, but we're back to throw another log on the @ Movies fire just in time for Yule as a Christmas gift to our dear listeners, presenting our first ever special Manga Mavericks @ Movies interview with Casper Kelly, the creator of many [adult swim] classics like Stroker & Hoop, Your Pretty Face is Going to Hell, Too Many Cooks, Final Deployment 4, and his newest special and first ever feature film, Adult Swim's Yule Log (aka The Fireplace)! Yule Log was the wonderful wintertime gift we didn't know we wanted when it premiered after the Rick & Morty season finale last Sunday night, it's the kind of special surprise and creative novelty that I absolutely love [adult swim] for and why they're still the best network around, because no other network would greenlight a feature film based around a Yule Log video gone horribly wrong like this. But the film is so much more than just an inspired gimmick, and we go deep with Casper to ask burning questions about what sparks his imagination and lit the fire of the themes placed in the film, and he lays down a lot of fascinating insights you'll want to log! If you have not seen Yule Log yet I highly recommend you go to adult swim's website or HBO MAX and watch it first, going in completely blind, and then coming back to this interview. I do not avoid spoilers in my questions and one of mine involves discussing the ending of the film and its implications, so definitely watch the film first, and don't start a flame war with me if you don't! But enough burning the midnight oil, let's crawl into the fireplace and chat with the man behind this Yuletime jewel sublime, Casper Kelly! On this episode of Manga Mavericks, Colton & Lum are joined by both Maxy Barnard of Friendship Effort Victory and Shonen Flop, as well as Doctor from the SSAA Podcast, to discuss yet another Jump Stop manga with Tomohiro Yagi's Red Sprite! A series centered around protagonist, Tatsu Frampt, who after having his orphan friends taken away to be used as human batteries by a definitely-not-fascist government, crashes their country's dictator's highly televised rally and commandeers an airship in order to find his friends and start up their own independent nation! The nation of Manga Mavericks however is a little split this time around, as some of its citizens find this series to be sort of an enjoyable, breezy read, despite it clearly not living up to its potential. While other citizens find this series so frustratingly barren of any kind of set up and payoff for anything it wants to explore, that they might just consider it one of the worst Jump Stop manga ever covered on the show! What side do you fall on? Listen to the episode and decide for yourself! On this episode of Manga Mavericks, Colton & Lum are joined by David from the Shonen Flop podcast for what is possibly the biggest trial of the century! As they will have to argue why Gakkyu Hotei (aka School Judgment) is one of, if not the worst manga they have ever covered on the show!! Gakkyu Hotei being a series written by Nobuaki Enoki and illustrated by Takeshi Obata (also known as the artist of both Death Note & Bakuman), centered in a world where Japanese grade schools are corrupted to the point where the government creates the School Judgment System! Where elementary school students can take their grievances and discuss them during Classroom Arbitration sessions! Trials for children by children! With the series' protagonist and defense attorney, Abaku Inugami, solving all kinds of cases ranging from who dismembered the classroom pet to figuring out the identity of local snack (NOT DRUG) dealers, all while getting closer to finding out who murdered his old classmates on that fateful day known as the Bloody Classroom Session!! Now you might be saying to yourself, "Huh, that doesn't sound too bad!", but trust us, its not only mostly mediocre, but also contains a lot of weird, creepy choices that Enoki himself is a little too boastful about and proud of. What are those choices, you ask? Enter the court and find out!! On this episode of Manga Mavericks, Colton & Lum discuss Gengoroh Tagame's Our Colors with translator of the book, Anne Ishii! Our Colors is Tagame's newest all ages comic about a high schooler named Sora Itoda, who struggles with being himself around most of his family and friends because he hasn't worked up the courage to come out yet. That is, until he meets, Mr. Amamiya, the owner of a hidden local café and the first real gay person Sora becomes friends with who inspires him little by little to start living as his true self (but little does Sora know, he may end up doing the same for Mr. Amamiya as well). The Mavericks discuss with Anne about her time translating the series, as well as why it may be even better then Tagame's previous all ages work, My Brother's Husband! Enjoy! On this episode of Manga Mavericks, Colton and Lum are joined by Mike (VegettoEX), one of the founders of the biggest Dragon Ball fansite on the internet, Kanzenshuu, as well as Darren Vogt, artist extraordinaire and one of the hosts of the Comics on the Spot podcast, to discuss Akira Toriyama's Manga Theater! A collection of comics from Akira Toriyama spanning across multiple decades of his career from before the start of Dr Slump to near the end of Dragon Ball! Toriyama is one of our favorite manga artists of all time, so there was no way we wouldn't cover more of his comics at some point, especially with a new collection of his stories that have never been released before officially in English until recently! We cover this collection of over 20 stories as exhaustively as possible, as Mike provides a lot of much needed context for the publication of a lot of them and pinpoint where Toriyama was in his career at the time of each of them, while Darren provides his perspective as a fellow artist and what makes Toriyama's comics craft so interesting even as far back as his pre-Dr Slump days! Join us as we rediscover our love of Toriyama's works and reevaluate why he's simply one of the best at what he does!
Subscribers! Be sure to go to the blog to read the description easier & check out links for this episode! This month's Guest Episode is a manga-centric one!
