We must guess; and once again, we have another old properly getting an anime adaptation (Dengeki Daisy) which has Helen fearing for it due to age-gap being part of his premise to Justin actually being a bit cynical about all these manga from years ago — and well after they’ve ended — getting an anime adaptation. Join Alex and Dr. Ethan Harrod as they navigate the spirit world in Hayao Miyazaki's masterpiece Spirited Away (2001)! The English language dubbed version features the voice acting of Daveigh Chase (RIP :'( ), Suzanne Pleshette, Jason Marsden, and Susan Egan. Chihiro is a little girl whose family is moving, when they happen upon a strangely deserted resort town. Her parents turn into pigs after eating some food, they are subsumed within a spirit world, and Chihiro, now named Sen, must navigate working for an evil witch named Yubaba so she can find her parents, turn them back into people and get out of the spirit world. Along the way, she meets No Face, a spirit that learns the value of family and empathy from Chihiro. Several topics are discussed in this episode, but cultural psychology — and the differences between this Japanese film and American films — is the overarching theme and concepts. It's definitely a beautiful film, so it deserves a watch — and parents, listen to your kids! Welcome to Manga Monday! This week we're diving into Kagurabachi, Takeru Hokazono's sword fighting revenge epic running in Weekly Shonen Jump that memed its way into the conversation and then backed it up with one of the best action manga in years. Chihiro Rokuhira grew up training under his father Kunishige, a legendary swordsmith whose six Enchanted Blades single-handedly ended a war. The goofy dad and the serious kid lived a quiet life together until a group of criminal sorcerers called the Hishaku murdered Kunishige and stole the blades. Now Chihiro wields his father's seventh and final blade on a blood soaked quest to reclaim what was taken. But this isn't just mindless revenge. It's about a father's belief that his creations should protect, not destroy, and a son carrying that forward even when hatred would be easier. The fight choreography is brutal, the lore keeps getting deeper, and Chihiro is the kind of protagonist who says almost nothing but hits you right in the chest with everything he does. Over 3 million copies sold. This one earned every bit of the hype.If you enjoy the show, please rate, review, like, and subscribe to Sakura Society | An Anime Appreciation Podcast — and any other podcasts you love. Welcome to a very special Money On Film miniseries!Over three episodes, Slate Money's Felix Salmon and Slate culture writer Nadira Goffe revisit three films at the intersection of culture and finance. On this episode, Nadira and Felix take a trip to a bathhouse for spirits in 2001's Spirited Away.Directed by Hayao Miyazaki, the film follows a girl named Chihiro, who becomes trapped in the spirit world and must save her parents, encountering soot sprites, river spirits, a giant baby, and many more wonderful and terrifying beings along the way.The film is a masterpiece of storytelling and technical animation, but as Felix explains, it also works as a highly developed metaphor for capital and the Japanese economy at the close of the millennium: the bathhouse stands in for a stable but exploitative economic system, beset by outside capital forces, with workers stripped of their names and identities. This is the final episode of the Money On Film miniseries. This week on Wrestling Omakase the double John connection is back at it again, as John is once again joined by John Bivins! First, some complaints about a much too tiny anime convention John just went to, plus John B. also went to a renaissance faire (can you believe both these people have girlfriends??) where he ran into a Randy Savage impersonator, for some reason. Hear all about it! Once the assorted wackiness is out of the way the two of them start off with a pair of Korakuen shows from joshi promotions: first, Sendai Girls' 11/16 show that just so happens to have been Chihiro Hashimoto's 10th anniversary event. They discuss a Chihiro vs. Sareee match that's getting MOTYC buzz, Mika Iwata making an extremely appropriate tribute, the finals of the Jaja Uma tournament for young wrestlers and more! The second Korakuen show comes to us from Dream Star Fighting Marigold, as they talk about a match that both of them really loved, some stuff they were more meh on, another very strange Rossy booking decision and where things look to be going heading into their 1/3 PPV show from Ota Ward.Next, they head back to STARDOM for four more nights of the Goddesses tag league, two of which were quite good and two of which, well, weren't really. Plus: the We Hate STARDOM crew is at it again with maybe their dumbest complaint yet (and that's REALLY saying something), and the standings look to be taking shape, for better or worse. And for the sake of diversity they finally talk some men's wrestling, as they break down NOAH's 11/15 show from Osaka that featured two second round matches in their junior tournament, a very strange GHC Tag #1 contenders match, and a preview tag for next week's Mr. Smack Daddy vs. The Dang Joker showdown. Things are weird in NOAH these days!Fill out this form if you're interested in appearing on our Wrestle Kingdom Week preview show (deadline for submissions is 11/30!): https://forms.gle/PoTPsfetRribc4Av9Follow Wrestling Omakase's Twitter account: http://www.twitter.com/wrestleomakaseFollow John on Bluesky: http://bsky.app/profile/justoneenby.bsky.socialCheck out John Bivins on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/john.bivins.372And on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/punkrock.darkroast/And here's a random clip of John B. provoking an old lady: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1piF6ngT9lv-gX-1LZggZLc4bSvnQKMnr/view?usp=sharingAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Title: Changing of Leaves in Studio GhibliIn this episode of MC Anime, guest Leslie—a photographer, business owner, and devoted Studio Ghibli fan—joins us to examine how the studio captures the essence of autumn through its storytelling and visual artistry. From the vibrancy of fall's colors to the quiet reflection of change, Studio Ghibli masterfully uses the season as a metaphor for growth, transformation, and memory. The conversation begins with Howl's Moving Castle, where Leslie discusses how the shift from fall's brightness to muted tones parallels the film's emotional depth and evolving characters. The fading warmth of the landscape reflects the story's transition from wonder to introspection, illustrating how the season mirrors human experience.Leslie also shares insights on Spirited Away, highlighting how autumn's themes of change and renewal shape Chihiro's journey. The film's use of natural imagery captures the fleeting beauty of transformation, symbolizing both loss and personal discovery. The discussion expands to My Neighbor Totoro, which celebrates the cyclical nature of the seasons and underscores the importance of environmental harmony. Through its depiction of rural life and the protection of nature, the film reminds viewers of the enduring bond between people and the world around them. Finally, Only Yesterday serves as a reflective tribute to the fall harvest, connecting nostalgia, memory, and the passage of time. Its portrayal of autumnal life speaks to the universal rhythm of change and the beauty found in remembering where we come from.Together, these explorations reveal how Studio Ghibli transforms the changing of leaves into a poetic expression of nature's cycles and humanity's emotional landscapes.

It's the final day of Anime August Week and Amanda and Patrick have saved the best for last: today, they're treating you all to Hayao Miyazaki's award-winning, record-breaking 2001 Japanese animated fantasy film, Spirited Away! Often considered Ghibli Studios's breakout project—and a usual suspect on “best of” lists throughout the industry—Spirited Away is the company's (and Miyazaki's) first Academy Award-winning film, having been only the second movie to win Best Animated Feature at the 75th Academy Awards (following Shrek, the award's inaugural winner, lol). As with all Miyazaki films, Spirited Away tackles themes of community building, environmentalism, and greed, conveyed across a simultaneously tender and exciting coming-of-age adventure set against a backdrop of cultural Japanese folklore. Mythical deities, acerbic witches, and whimsical magical entities (looking at you, Soot Sprites!) are just a few things that the 10-year-old protagonist, Chihiro, encounters during her employment at a bathhouse for spirits, where she's forced to earn her keep if she doesn't want to run afoul of powerful witch Yubaba, the bathhouse's austere owner. If Chihiro hopes to make it back to the mortal realm, she'll have to rely on the help of her coworkers and Yubaba's mysterious right-hand man, dragon-shifter Haku. Join Amanda and Patrick as they engage in some all-too-familiar antics, including (but not limited to): Amanda forgetting how to read, Patrick going on a tangent about music, Amanda literally crying about how much she loves this movie, and Patrick Googling things in real time. We at GateCrashers are so excited to bring you the final episode of one of our favorite annual segments. Thank you for joining us. See you next year. Long live Anime August!
