On today's episode I have Oscar nominated director, Pablo Berger! Pablo's animated feature length film, "Robot Dreams" was nominated for Best Animated film earlier this year at the 96th Academy Awards and will hit theaters Friday, May 31, 2024, after being picked up for American distribution by NEON. I loved this film when I watched it ahead of the Oscars and re-watching it to prepare to talk to Pablo brought that same joy. I talked with Pablo about growing up in Spain and finding filmmaking and a love for film, making the move to animation where all of his past films have been live action films, what inspires him about telling a story through animation, staying true to the fans of the "Robot Dreams" graphic novel, getting his Oscar nomination, how Robot Dreams was created, and so much more. A huge Thank You to Pablo Berger for taking the time to join me on the show. Go see "Robot Dreams" in theaters starting TODAY! The Mitchells vs. the Machines is a 2021 animated family comedy produced by Sony Pictures Animation and Phil Lord and Chris Miller (The Lego Movie). It was scheduled for a cinema release but due to Covid restrictions was released on Netflix in April 2021. The Mitchells are outdoors loving, tech hating dad Rick and peacemaker and baking enthusiast mum Linda. They live in a small town in Michigan with their children Katie (aspiring filmmaker) and Aaron (dinosaur fanatic) and their pug dog Monchi. On the evening before Katie leaves for college to start her dream course in filmmaking she falls out with dad Rick. To try and save their relationship he cancels her flight to instead drive her there in a last chance attempt at a family bonding adventure. At the same time, a highly intelligent AI PAL launches an attack against the human race and orders an army of robots to capture humans. It is left to the Mitchells to stop them and save humanity. Benefiting from fast-paced and frenetic storytelling with pop culture memes and viral videos this was a huge lockdown hit for adults and children last year. Sadly, despite the enthusiasm for The Mitchells vs. the Machines from Flixwatcher and guests, it did not win Best Animated film at the Oscars but it did however score a very respectable 3.84 overall. Reports have surfaced that it appears likely the Pegula's will ultimately get a new stadium built in Western New York. The guys discuss if they're surprised to learn that's likely coming in Orchard Park as opposed to downtown as well as having an overhang as opposed to a dome and the possibility of the team having to play at least a season in Toronto or Penn State while it would get built. Bills wide receiver Cole Beasley was at it on Twitter again recently, criticizing the NFLPA and continuing his controversial takes towards Covid. Patrick explains why he thinks it's time for Beasley to hit the deactivate button on his Twitter account. Joe also pays tribute to Rene Robert, a member of the Sabres famed French Connection line after Robert passed away following a heart attack this week at the age of 72. They finish with this week's “Starting Five” draft, this time selected from animated/cartoon series. The picks include everything from recent years all the way back to 1940.
