This week, we pay tribute to one of the most devastating (and life-affirming) movies ever made. It's our very first Takahata film, and… it's a doozy. We simply couldn't do a Studio Ghibli series without honoring this masterpiece. **Please be aware that this episode includes some distressing themes around children and violence. We tried our best to celebrate the brilliance of the film but inevitably the conversation turned dark at times. Next week, we get a (much-needed) big, fuzzy hug from MY NEIGHBOR TOTORO (1988). In the latest episode of Heroic Purgatory: An Asian Cinema Podcast, John and Jason move to the countryside for a friendly chat with magical owls and bus-sized orange cats. That's right, we are covering My Neighbor Totoro, the 1988 Hayao Miyazaki film who's titular character became the logo for the newly minted Studio Ghibli. Though often viewed as a "children" film, Totoro is not all about laughs and cuddles. We discuss the more tragical underpinnings of the story and how it reflects the ambivalent Japanese society of Miyazaki's youth. Enjoy! Get in, losers, we're going to Laputa! From Astro Boy to Gundam to real-world robots like ASIMO and Pepper, Japan's fascination with robots runs deep. This week, the Krewe is joined by author, cultural commentator, & robot enthusiast Matt Alt to explore how robots became heroes instead of threats in Japanese pop culture and how those sci-fi dreams quietly shaped Japan's modern relationship with technology, AI, and everyday automation. From giant mecha and cyborg icons to robot cafés and beyond, we dig into why Japan seems so comfortable living alongside machines in an episode that's equal parts nostalgia, culture, and future tech.------ About the Krewe ------The Krewe of Japan Podcast is a weekly episodic podcast sponsored by the Japan Society of New Orleans. Seeds Mix #6: Angie QQ – A Meditation Through Taroko (Taiwan)

Angela Lin, aka Angie QQ, producer and A&R behind the Sounds of Taiwan compilation, returned to Taiwan in May 2019 seeking refuge after the loss of her mother. What she discovered in Taroko National Park became the seed for this mix: a meditation on grief, memory, and the way certain places hold us when we need holding most. Taroko's hidden temples and fervent lushness offered Lin sanctuary. She describes the experience as feeling “totally alive” – each leaf, each butterfly, each beam of light made sharp from grief. High in those mountains, she felt her mother could finally see her. Later, her father revealed that Taroko was one of her mother's favourite places in the world. Though earthquakes have since closed many of the park's paths, this aural journey captures what it's like to walk and meditate there: spiritual, powerful, introspective, and healing. Understanding how music can hold both landscape and loss, the mix moves like a meditation, like the scene in Totoro where they dance to make their garden sprout, capturing the moment when grief sharpens everything into aliveness, when even the sound of light becomes audible. Angie QQ is a Taiwanese American cultural producer based in Los Angeles. With her label Pure Person Press, she “creates and collects records that preserve the spirit of Taiwan.” Her latest collaboration with composer Lim Giong, Sounds of Taiwan, is an ambient record that invites artists to sample Lim Giong's personal field recordings of Taiwan – a sonic landscape of the island's people, nature, and spirituality. Through her other company, East Never Loses,, she has transformed mahjong into a cultural movement. Whether through music or mahjong, her work seeks to connect people to Taiwanese culture. “This mixtape was inspired by my time in Taroko National Park in May 2019. My mother had just passed 6 months ago, and to mourn, I returned to nature. Taroko has hidden temples and places of meditation tucked in all of its crevices. I was able to disappear and hide in its fervent lushness. Inside Taroko's incredible energy, I felt totally alive. Up high in those mountains, I knew my mother could finally see me. I found out later from my father that Taroko was one of my mother's favourite places in the world. Sadly, Taroko in recent years has been decimated by earthquakes. Many paths and roads are no longer accessible. Nature reclaims nature. I hope however, this mix offers a feeling of what it would be like to meditate and walk in Taroko: spiritual, powerful, introspective, and healing.” Interview: https://www.theransomnote.com/music/mixes/seeds-mix-6-angie-qq-a-meditation-through-taroko-taiwan-%e7%a9%bf%e8%b6%8a%e5%a4%aa%e9%ad%af%e9%96%a3%e7%9a%84%e5%86%a5%e6%83%b3%e4%b9%8b%e6%97%85%e5%8f%b0%e7%81%a3/

All aboard the Cat Bus for a moving conversation about one of the greatest animations of all time – and the emotional madness of trying to bring that tale to the stage in London's West End. If you're in London at the moment, you need to see the current theatrical adaptation of My Neighbour Totoro currently showing in the West End. Produced by the Royal Shakespeare Company with puppet designs by Jim Henson's Creature Shop, this magical re-telling of the iconic Studio Ghibli animation was written by our guest today, Tom Morton-Smith – a storyteller whose past work includes Oppenheimer (not the Christopher Nolan movie, but an acclaimed stage drama) and Ravens, a Cold War thriller set at the 1972 World Chess Championship. Taking on Totoro was an undertaking as big and daunting as the titular forest spirit himself. Set in post-war Japan, Hayao Miyazaki's story told the tale of a father and his two daughters who move to the edge of an enchanted forest, to be closer to the hospital where the girls' mother is undergoing medical care. As uncertainty gathers, strange creatures reveal themselves to little Satsuki and Mei – leading them on an adventure of wonder and awe. In the spoiler conversation you're about to hear, Tom details how he translated that wonder and awe to the stage. He's also open about his persoal experience, writing the play amid huge change in his family life. The grief and loss – or potential for loss – that sits in the background of the Totoro story is something Tom was moving through himself as he sat down to pen this adaptation. We break down the tale's themes of environmentalism and the kindness we owe to each other. We also get into the darkness of Ghibli that is often erased or reduced in how the west talks about films like this one. Finally, we talk about “ma” – the Japanese word for “emptiness” – that Miyazaki fills Totoro with, and why it might just be the secret to the joy of this film, now more than ever, in a frantic, digital world. I recorded this episode in the wake of my own mother's death, and I speak about how grief has shaped my experience of the film.

Monsters of Design

In this episode of Monsters of Design, the Tenacious Trio—Jon Sontag, Adrian Crabtree, and Jon Delman—join forces with Karen Piper, Head of Brand Strategy at Code and Theory, to confront a particularly moody menace: CX, the monster that emerges when Customer Experience goes bad. This isn't the warm, fuzzy kind—it's the version dripping in frowny face emojis and weighed down by heavy thumbs downs. It shows up when brands make big, shiny promises but fail to deliver where it counts. Together, they dig into why beautiful content and sleek design aren't enough—brands must follow through with meaningful, consistent experiences or risk awakening this sulky, trust-breaking beast. And to keep things balanced, they end the episode swapping stories about their current favorite monsters, including aggressive wild turkeys, the cuddly enigma of Totoro, and a few unexpected legends lurking in the shadows.

Short answer is sort of. We're back, it's been a minute and that's kind of been a pattern, for good reason but we'll get to that. We mentioned a few episode ago that the scope and scale of the podcast was likely to change and if you've been a long time listener you've already likely noticed. We've made the decision to keep moving in an even more casual direction that'll honestly look a lot more like this episode in terms of format, what do I mean by that? Really the structure and frequency of our episodes are the things that'll be changing most. We'll be continuing with our kind of sporadic upload schedule for the foreseeable future and our  content will be a lot less comprehensive and a lot more based on what we're watching rather than focusing on a season as a whole. We've had a blast these past 4 years covering anime, and we don't want to hang that up but the reality is as always that things change and this how things shook out. Thank you to all of the folks who've tuned in either for an episode or since the beginning, we're not going away, we'll still be around bullshitting about cartoons from time to time, but it feels worthy of an explanation so there it is. Power Rankings live @tjapod on instagram

We're back! It's been a minute, but you all know how it goes. Fortunately for us this little delay has line us right up with the new season, that's right it's Spring 2025 over here at TJA and we've got a whole slew of new shows to talk about. There are some anticipated new titles, a few top notch returning shows, and a whole bunch of middle of the road nonsense and as per usual we're gonna try to watch a little bit of all of it. So thanks for your patience while we get back into the swing of things, and if you're wondering what to watch this season then we've got you covered. Power Rankings live @tjapod on instagram
