In this episode of Monsters of Design, the Tenacious Trio—Jon Sontag, Adrian Crabtree, and Jon Delman—join forces with Karen Piper, Head of Brand Strategy at Code and Theory, to confront a particularly moody menace: CX, the monster that emerges when Customer Experience goes bad. This isn't the warm, fuzzy kind—it's the version dripping in frowny face emojis and weighed down by heavy thumbs downs. It shows up when brands make big, shiny promises but fail to deliver where it counts. Together, they dig into why beautiful content and sleek design aren't enough—brands must follow through with meaningful, consistent experiences or risk awakening this sulky, trust-breaking beast. And to keep things balanced, they end the episode swapping stories about their current favorite monsters, including aggressive wild turkeys, the cuddly enigma of Totoro, and a few unexpected legends lurking in the shadows.
We cover the magical (and messy) world of Ghibli-inspired AI art! Is it a love letter to the studio's iconic style or straight-up art theft? We explore the drama, the ethics, and whether Totoro would approve.
Short answer is sort of. We're back, it's been a minute and that's kind of been a pattern, for good reason but we'll get to that. We mentioned a few episode ago that the scope and scale of the podcast was likely to change and if you've been a long time listener you've already likely noticed. We've made the decision to keep moving in an even more casual direction that'll honestly look a lot more like this episode in terms of format, what do I mean by that? Really the structure and frequency of our episodes are the things that'll be changing most. We'll be continuing with our kind of sporadic upload schedule for the foreseeable future and our content will be a lot less comprehensive and a lot more based on what we're watching rather than focusing on a season as a whole. We've had a blast these past 4 years covering anime, and we don't want to hang that up but the reality is as always that things change and this how things shook out. Thank you to all of the folks who've tuned in either for an episode or since the beginning, we're not going away, we'll still be around bullshitting about cartoons from time to time, but it feels worthy of an explanation so there it is. We're back! It's been a minute, but you all know how it goes. Fortunately for us this little delay has line us right up with the new season, that's right it's Spring 2025 over here at TJA and we've got a whole slew of new shows to talk about. There are some anticipated new titles, a few top notch returning shows, and a whole bunch of middle of the road nonsense and as per usual we're gonna try to watch a little bit of all of it. So thanks for your patience while we get back into the swing of things, and if you're wondering what to watch this season then we've got you covered. Power Rankings live @tjapod on instagram

We had lofty goals of talking about all things Arcane this week, but reality had other plans. As such we're talking about our favorite show this season, and maybe anime of the year, DanDaDan. We're 8 episodes in at the time of recording and it has been a wild ride to say the least. All hype aside, this one feels like something special so we're dedicating this whole episode to seeing if we can put our finger on just what that is.Power Rankings live @tjapod on instagram

We're finally at the end of our first impressions for the fall season, and we managed to do it before the season was half over so that's not nothing. We've got a couple of returning titles and one or two new ones in this episode before finally dropping our top 5 new and top 3(sort of) returning titles of the season. It's a little slower than some falls in the past, but there are a number of really solid titles on offer so tune in to see which ones we're keeping up with. Power Rankings live @tjapod on instagram
We're back and we've got another 12 or so new titles to talk about for first impressions this week. This episode is pretty heavy on the fantasy titles for the fall season, but once again there's a little bit of everything this week as well as a number of pretty surprising titles. This week is pretty much exclusively new shows, except for one remake of an older title, but we'll be hitting some of the returning series in an episode soon! Power Rankings live @tjapod on instagram
We're back once again proving that inconsistency is key. We've wrapped up the Summer season and naturally we have thoughts, but only a few because we've got the Fall season breathing down our necks. There are a good few titles that peak our interest and we've got some speculation before the onslaught of new shows to take in. Curious about where to start this season? We'll have you covered in this episode and our first impressions hopefully out soon. Power Rankings live @tjapod on instagram

The end of the Summer season is rapidly approaching so we figured we should do a little ranking to see where things stand. Rather than categorizing every show we're just hitting a top five new and top three returning series plus a couple of honorable mentions that maybe didn't make the cut. This list is a little more freeform than you're maybe used to if you've been listening to us for a while now but hey it still gives you an idea of what we're watching and what you might want to catch up on. Power Rankings live @tjapod on instagram
Just when you thought everything had dropped this season here we are with two more first impressions. Both titles receiving a fair bit of hype in their own right, this week we're talking Delico's Nursery and Kimi No Todoke season 3. The former is a new title set in a world of vampire aristocracy and upset children while the latter is a much beloved classic rom com dropping a new season. As always we've got our thoughts and first impressions as well as some other nonsense to keep you up to date on this anime season. Power Rankings live @tjapod on instagram
I know it's a late episode this week and the title doesn't fit the meme format but it's the best we got this week. Here's another round of first impressions as we start moving towards the middle of the season. Due to a weird release schedule we're really spreading out the first impressions, but we've got 6 titles some new and some returning to go over this week as we wait for the last couple of holdouts to start. Another trip through the Fantasy/Animation archive lands on this very early episode from February 2019 that focuses on Studio Ghibli's My Neighbor Totoro (Hayao Miyazaki, 1988). Chris and Alex take the opportunity to reminisce about when fantasy and animation first met, and whether Alex has ‘clicked' with the film since the original episode was recorded. With My Neighbor Totoro initially released as part of a double-bill with Grave of the Fireflies (Isao Takahata, 1988) - a film that Chris and Alex have also covered on the podcast - this is a chance for listeners to enjoy their own Fantasy/Animation double-header! **Fantasy/Animation theme tune composed by Francisca Araujo** **As featured on Feedspot's 25 Best London Education Podcasts**

We're doing this thing, another episode right here and guess what? It's more first impressions! This week Nick decided to try and watch all the shows that looked halfway decent, and Cory picked all the titles that seemed like terrible fanservicey garbage. So we've got a pretty good smattering of new shows to pick from this week, some of them good and some of them maybe not as much. So sit back and maybe you'll find your next favorite show for the season. Power Rankings live @tjapod on instagram
Hey everyone, we're still doing this thing! If you stuck around we probably owe you an explanation, but essentially life took a larger focus and Cory was fortunate enough to get married recently which is also pretty cool. We're still planning on making this happen from time to time though, so here's a new episode choc full of new first impressions for the currently happening summer season. If you're worried about how spring ended up... don't be probably, though we may retroactively crown a bgbfg. In the meantime here's summer in all of its weird horniness here to stay. On this episode, we talk about a Hayao Miyazaki classic, My Neighbor Totoro. We talk about growing up through our childhoods, hits of reality, and the cuddly nature of having a Totoro figure in our lives. This week Erin and Brennan are picked up in a time machine captained by Walter Cronkite! Is it a time machine or a spaceship? Or a spaceship time machine?? Whatever it is, it's filled with BRAAAAINNNN GRAAAAAIIIINNN!!!!! A cereal that makes your brain grow, like, a lot! We meet Rex, Elsa, Woog, and Dweeb, dinosaurs (and a pterosaur) that are brought to the 90's to fulfill the wishes of children at The Museum of Natural History *wink* (new law, it must be said in the voice of Cronkite for all time). On the other hand, there is Professor Screweyes who sees our Mesozoic friends as monsters in his show of frights and fears. We talk zombies, Totoro, chainsaws, unreliable friends, and a murder of crows. To be honest though, there's nothing wrong with a horror circus, so we're not actually sure why Screweyes is considered bad. In a month we are calling June Gloom, this is one of our most uplifting and beautiful films from our childhoods. We'll rendez-vous, we'll rendez-vous.
This week we're testing our new short format and talking about two things that do prominently feature shirtless people. First up is Nick's favorite, a new season of Demon Slayer Kimetsu no Yaiba is out and the hashira training arc is well underway. Will this be the season that brings Nick back into the fold or is it too little too late? Next up we're talking the most recent live action adaptation of a beloved anime. This time it's Golden Kamuy who get's its meatspace debut. This adaptation was full of surprises, a number of them pleasant even. Covering live action anime seems to be the main focus of our episodes these days, but all the same we've got a full deep dive if you're into that sort of thing. Special guest Paul Tremblay (author of The Cabin at the End of the World, Survivor Song, and the forthcoming Horror Movie) joins the Squad to talk about one of our favorite underrated horror films, The Blackcoat's Daughter (2017). Then we chat with Paul about his new novel, Horror Movie! Don't worry – there are no spoilers in this interview, so you can listen before you read it. This week in our newly streamlined formula we're just talking about one thing, Blue Giant. It's an anime film about you guessed it, jazz, which came out a while ago but is finally available to stream this month. With the director of Mob Pschyo 100 at the helm and music by Hiromi Uehara, we were pretty excited to see this one. But did it live up to the hype? Sort of... it's complicated which is why we did a whole review for you to enjoy. We'll be back to more seasonal focused content soon, but for now let us know what you thought of Blue Giant. Sierra Katow is an Asian-American woman in stand-up comedy, but those parts of her identity are surface-level. What you might not know about Sierra (unless you watch her new special, FUNT) is that she's also a little sister. That's not the only point of recognition she has with Lilo and Mei, heroes of Lilo & Stitch and My Neighbor Totoro, but it's certainly first on the list. She and Jordan discuss that list, and why Sierra isn't interested in representing anyone but herself onstage. Then, Jordan has one quick thing aboutSierra's new stand-up special is FUNT***With Jordan Crucchiola and Sierra Katow
Maybe, It's hard to say. With life changing in somewhat significant ways as well as a series of other things we've decided to reexamine our format a little bit and change things up. We'll be going into more detail in a future episode, but we wanted to give an abbreviated powercast a shot, one with less structure and tiers and more of a top 10 new and top 5 returning respectively. We're trying things out, we're keeping things a little briefer than usual, and honestly we cover a lot of things in first impressions anyway so bare with us as we try stuff out to find our new vibe a little bit. We reconvene Miyazaki Club to discuss the master animator’s latest final movie, “The Boy and the Heron.” We went in wondering, will this be lyrical and nostalgic magical realism, or will it be a barrage of super-weird fantastical imagery? The voluminous bird poop and the suit of frogs point the way. Jason Snell with John Siracusa, Steve Lutz and Moisés Chiullán.
