Sometimes you can get everything you want as a dancer, only to discover the reality is quite different from what you imagined it would be. In this episode, author and former dancer, Rym Kechacha, shares how that realization shaped her own journey, from early ballet training in London to dancing professionally with Northern Ballet, where touring life was both joyful and intensely demanding. She reflects on what it felt like to end her career as a dancer earlier than expected, and how that ending opened the door to a new creative identity. Rym traces her path into teaching, studying creative writing, and eventually publishing fiction, shaped by a lifelong love of books and fantasy. Our conversation explores her latest novel, The Apple and the Pearl, a ballet-inspired fantasy that captures both the beauty and cruelty of the stage world, blending realism with folkloric and fantastical elements. Thoughtful and candid about reinvention, artistry, and creative freedom, Rym offers her insights on what happens when one dream ends and another begins. Listen in for a rich discussion on dance, writing, and the stories that carry us forward! Key Points From This Episode: Rym's upbringing in London and her love of dance from a young age. How she persuaded her parents to let her attend ballet school at age 16. The demanding daily schedule of life at Central School of Ballet. Figuring out her plans after Ballet School and how her love of story ballets guided her. How she joined Northern Ballet and what it was like touring with the company. The serious impact of arts funding cuts and austerity measures in 2010. Losing her place at Northern Ballet: why it was both sad and liberating. What Rym did next in her career: travelling, au pairing, and becoming a teacher. How she rediscovered writing, earned her creative writing MA, and published her first novel. Reflections on the challenges of publishing and how ballet prepares you for rejection. Her experience writing her latest book, The Apple and The Pearl, and how it relates to ballet. A closer look at her upcoming novels, from Algerian history to London folklore and fantasy. Rym Kechacha is a former dancer, now writer from London, UK. Turns out the great big beautiful White House ballroom was just a roof for the elites' new underground bunker — and they tore out the OLD bunker to build it. Rob Bernstein debuts the brand new million-dollar Run Your Mouth studio, immediately fires Producer Man, and declares war on being the biggest show on the internet. The FEMA administrator apparently got teleported to Waffle House by demons -- and Rob breaks down why that tracks. A hot Iranian woman gets deported for calling America "the great Satan" and Rob pitches his immigration reform platform: import more hot women, put the fives and sixes on notice. Pam Bondi's replacement channels his inner Lil Wayne dodging every Epstein question. Then Rob uses AI to calculate what $2 billion could actually do for Americans instead of rescuing one downed pilot, tears apart a Wall Street Journal article pitching the Iran war as an energy win, explains the petrodollar like a guy who's confident but admittedly might be wrong, and closes with a pitch to design society from the toilets up.Support the show: robbernsteincomedy.comSheath Underwear -- promo code RYM: sheathunderwear.comChapters:00:00:00 - New Million-Dollar Studio Debut + Producer Man Is Fired00:03:17 - Waffle House Is a Demon Portal (FEMA Administrator Confirms)00:05:57 - Deported Iranian Woman: The "Iranian Aubrey Plaza" Immigration Plan00:08:22 - Epstein Update: New AG Channels Chappelle's Lil Wayne00:12:32 - Sponsor: Sheath Underwear (Promo Code RYM)00:13:33 - Iran War Coverage: Power Plant and Bridge Day00:19:29 - SEAL Team Six Rescue Mission -- $2 Billion for One Pilot00:24:00 - AI Slop Research Division: What $2B Could Do for Americans00:27:16 - Petrodollar Breakdown (Said Confidently from a Nice Studio)00:31:29 - Debunking the Wall Street Journal's Pro-War Energy Article00:41:36 - Live Chat Comments + Viewer Q&A00:44:17 - Navy Toilets, NASA Toilets, and the Buc-ee's Philosophy00:47:14 - Domino's Driver Gets $40K -- Ring Camera Justice System00:49:24 - Sign Off

What makes the fae such enduring figures in fantasy? How do you write in the present tense without it feeling awkward? And can a fantasy story work in a confined setting instead of a vast world? In this episode, I'm joined by author Rym Kechacha to talk about her new novel The Apple and the Pearl. We dive into the strange allure of the fae in fantasy fiction, explore the craft of writing in the present tense, and discuss how powerful stories can unfold in smaller, more contained settings.Rym shares insights into her writing process, including the idea of “vibe writing” — letting the tone and atmosphere of a story guide you as you discover the narrative. We also talk about taking inspiration from artwork and paintings, and how visual sources can shape characters, mood and worldbuilding. One of the most interesting aspects of The Apple and the Pearl is its setting. Rather than a sprawling epic landscape, much of the story unfolds within the confined environment of a train. We discuss how limitations like this can actually strengthen tension, character development and narrative focus. If you're a fantasy writer or reader, this conversation offers a fascinating look at craft, inspiration and the creative decisions behind a unique fantasy novel. In this episode, you'll learn:How writing in the present tense can make a story feel immediate and active Why the fae remain one of the most compelling forces in fantasy fiction How to create characters readers genuinely care about The idea behind “vibe writing” and discovering your story as you write How artwork and paintings can inspire story ideas and atmosphere Why confined settings can create powerful fantasy storiesAbout The Apple and the Pearl The Apple and the Pearl blends myth, atmosphere and character-driven storytelling, drawing on fae folklore and rich visual inspiration to create a unique fantasy experience.Whether you're interested in folklore-inspired fantasy, writing craft, or the creative process behind a novel, this episode offers plenty of insight.Subscribe to the podcast for more conversations with fantasy authors, writing advice and behind-the-scenes discussions about storytelling.Get it here > https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/800526/the-apple-and-the-pearl-by-rym-kechacha/About Rym KechachaRym Kechacha is a fantasy author and teacher whose work blends folklore, art, and literary fantasy. What happens when you tell a country demanding jobs to create them instead?
