200 episodes ago, a group of guys got together to talk about anime every couple of weeks, record those discussions, and upload them to a small corner of the internet that seems to care what a group of would-be's think about all things anime. And 200 episodes later, we're still doing that, just with more refined takes and more realized viewpoints about the whole world at large. It's been quite a journey, and it's a journey we're still traversing through, for better or for worse, and we're glad that you're all here to share this journey with us. So, for the 200th installment, we've got plenty of Dragon Ball related things to talk about, from character popularity rankings and new project announcements, along with a new home for *THE* Ghost in the Shell coming later in the year, and plenty of kvetching about how much Crunchyroll continues to suck. It's funny to see that we've chronicled Crunchyroll's progress of enshittification all throughout this show's life. Here's hoping that in the future things start to turn for the better, for once. And here's to (maybe) 200 more shows to come. intro - happy 200, life is still difficult 10:07 - Dragon Ball popularity rankings, Genkidamatasuri announcements 59:21 - other news items (Amazon nabs The Ghost in the Shell, GKIDS gets cool things, Ninja Scroll 4K announced, more bad Crunchyroll things) 1:46:44 - home video releases (Captain Tsubasa, Monogatari) Apple Podcasts – https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/podcastona/id1348141210?mt=2 Spotify – https://open.spotify.com/show/2JZLO3LfoeHepomejTw4TP iHeartRadio – https://www.iheart.com/podcast/256-podcastona-43099114/ TuneIn – https://tunein.com/podcasts/Podcasts/PodcastONA-p1249922/ As always, check out surrealresolution.com for more content, updates on the show, our continued news posts, reviews, and our fellow podcasts.

Streaming News 39:41: Whatever the Kodansha-Disney deal was supposed to mean, Justin at least doesn’t know since the newest Ghost in the Shell anime will be streamed on Prime this summer; Chainsaw Man: Reze Arc will stream on Crunchyroll this Spring but Justin of course will make this about Demon Slayer; And not surprisingly, things don’t get cheaper, they get more expensive so Crunchyroll upping the subscription price for all tiers is not a shock. 44:43: GKIDS acquired the North American theatrical rights to Shōji Kawamori’s original animation film Labyrinth and it will be in theaters for two days in May; The 76th Berlin International Film Festival is screening a 4K restoration of Ninja Scroll; and Oceanveil continues branching out from what they’re usually known for, and now has Haigakura & Scum’s Wish on their service. Main Topic: Winter Anime 2026 First Impressions 48:04: Justin and Helen discuss a very packed Winter Anime season, which means you should find a lot to like, whether it’s sequels (Frieren S2, Jujutsu Kaisen S3) to thoughtful and dense shows (Journal With Witch) or hilarious romcoms (Tamon's B-Side, You and I Are Polar Opposites). Just don’t do what Justin’s doing and watch objectively bad anime because you liked the original source (Roll Over and Die at 53:03, Tune in to the Midnight Heart at 1:07:47). Weird News 1:57:24: The year of reviving old material continues, as now Chie Shinohara’s Red River is getting an anime adaptation, so once again Justin implores everyone to let their dreams be dreams and put out in the universe what you want to become an anime! 2:03:51: You wouldn’t think a collaboration between artists would generate any controversy, but if it involves China and My Hero Academia, then yes, there will be controversy; if you like spicy foods and Hatsune Miku, Thailand’s got something for you; And finally, Mamoru Oshii has too much time on his hands since he’s logged way too many hours on Fallout, why would he share this with anyone (meanwhile Justin reveals how many hours he’s logged into Fire Emblem: Three Houses) If there’s anything you’d like to share, please feel free to reach out to us on Twitter (@TheOASG) or comment below with your thoughts! Dropping in for a holiday visit to take part in Anime Secret Santa, Jared and Ink of Oldtaku no Radio talk about the 2024 movie, Ghost Cat Anzu. The movie, based off of a manga by Takashi Imashiro, focuses on a tween, Karen (#NotThatKaren), who is taken away from the city by her widower father and dropped off at a rural temple tended by her grandfather. The movie deals with the processing of loss and grief via a sense of sympathy as well as a nostalgia for youthful mischief, bolstered by supernatural elements, and makes fantastic use of ishōtenketsu structure to nail its finale. Direct Download – RSS Feed – Spotify – Stitcher – Google Play: Music – iTunes – Send us Feedback! – More episodes Runtime: 1 hour, 9 minutes Show Notes Episode edited by Ink (Ink's computer was dying, so he apologizes for some of his choppier bits) The Review: Ghost Cat Anzu Name drops: co-directors Yoko Kuno (Linda, Linda, Linda) and Nobuhiro Yamashita (The Case of Hana & Alice, select Crayon Shin-Chan movies) Ghost Cat Anzu can be streamed via HBO Max and has a North American physical release via GKIDS Socials: Jared, Ink
Show Notes 0:00: Justin and Helen for yet another week chat about all the things they’ve been up to, which involves Helen explaining that she’s gotten her mom to watch Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu (and wondering how Justin would know this before the podcast), while Justin’s caught up to all the Fall anime shows, which includes the Gintama spinoff, Mr. Ginpachi's Zany Class. News 6:43: The two hosts then get into Netflix entering an agreement to purchase Warner Bros, HBO & HBO Max. The good news is the planned deal would take until Q3 2026 to actually close. That’s only good because both hosts (Justin especially) are not even sure how big the ramifications of this deal will be, who or what it’ll affect (aside from the consumer, who no matter what will lose), and what this will mean for the Entertainment industry at large. …Of course, not even a day after the two talked about this, a hostile bid from Paramount was announced, which means the hosts will try and talk about that next episode! 15:08: Justin and Helen attempt to figure out what Amazon was actually thinking when they chose to AI dub a couple of anime, to much derision, and then pull it off their service. It does get the hosts to think a bit darker, and why despite this being over, it’s not actually over when it comes to AI dubbing. 27:34: Yuki Ikeda’s Thunder 3 is slated to resume serialization February 6, which suggests Ikeda is healthy enough to resume the manga; Terraformars is also slated to resume next week, after it did see an initial delay during the summer and fall. 28:53: Shinsuke Takahashi’s family shared details of what has happened to the artist a few weeks ago, and the details are not very good. The hosts can only hope for the best for Takahashi moving forward. Licenses 34:04: Following them taking off for Thanksgiving, Seven Seas resumed their Wonderful Wednesdays event and announced they’ve licensed the following: HEKIRU HIKAWA's Hanaori-san Still Wants to Fight in the Next Life AKI YUKURA's Crow Hill: Don’t Be Shy!! – The Complete BL Manga Collection IKUHITO & OHANACHAN's Record of Lustful Warriors: The Rod Master's Unstoppable Conquest in Another World (Ghost Ship) Tsuki Aimi's Lazy Girl Momogusa Coolkyousinnjya & Cometubu's Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid: Ilulu Doesn't Understand Love Mitsu Hashimoto's The Prince’s Body Pillow 35:19: Dark Horse announced exclusively on ANN that they'll release a three-book Deluxe Edition manga series of the following Masamune Shirow works: Appleseed Deluxe Edition (The Deluxe Edition hardcover includes books one to four of the series and has 848 pages, slated for August 2026) Appleseed Companion Deluxe Edition Shirow Masamune Anthology Deluxe Edition 36:49: Noir Caesar is partnering with TOKYOPOP to release Mitsuhiro Mizuno and artist Ryōsuke Tobimatsu’s Deep3 basketball manga in 2026; Hiroyuki’s Girlfriend, Girlfriend manga is now part of the Kodansha Print Club line, and it’s available on select retailers…today! Streaming News 40:08: 4K Kiki’s Delivery Service? 4K Kiki’s Delivery Service!!!…Well, at least Justin thinks so. With GKIDS partnering with IMAX to bring 4K restorations of Studio Ghibli films to North American theaters in 2026, then that means Kiki in 4K should happen! (maybe just not next year, but we’ll have to see the rate of releases though); GKIDS will be bringing the latest Lupin the 3rd film to North America in January; and The 100 Meters film will be on Netflix before the year’s ends, which makes one host happy and one host less interested! 44:54: We’re getting another anime (for Netflix) just announced out of nowhere for the Winter season, and it pairs Boys Over Flowers creator Yoko Kamio with the Wit Studio crew; Chainsaw Man fans who wanted to watch the Reze Arc film but was not willing or able to go a theater to see it can now purchase it digitally…today; And we have a couple anime that will be streaming on Crunchyroll, either for the Winter season (Tamon’s B-Side) or sometime in 2026 (The Drops of God) 47:15: Ever heard of Whale Smart TVs? Well now Crunchyroll is on the service; Ever heard of VIZIO’s WatchFree+? Well now you can get REMOW’s Its Anime service on that app! Weird News 49:56: Weird fish discovery and Super Saiyan in one sentence? We can only thank the The University of the Ryukyus for discovering the goby fish and making the connection to a Saiyan. 51:47: Both Justin and Helen are curious about Korean webtoon and web novel platform RIDI suspending sales of BL novel Crazy Dog Hunts the Tiger only a day after its release a few weeks ago, following accusations it closely mirrors very notable pro gamer Faker. This somehow gets Helen to cook up an absolutely insane scenario (56:22) in this section. 57:51: The combination of Silent Möbius and The Avengers would be less weird decades ago, but in 2025? Both hosts have…questions…even if there is some curiosity about it! 1:00:08: And finally, just what Hideaki Anno needed…a figure of himself as Ultraman! Surprise! We're coming in hot with an early episode featuring impressions of Pokemon Legends Z-A, Disco Elysium, Pac-Man World 2 Re-Pac, the Chainsaw Man movie, GKIDS' wave of movie screenings, and more.
Blue hearts, high school dreams, and one unforgettable rock anthem — we're diving into Nobuhiro Yamashita's Linda Linda Linda (2005). The film follows a group of teenage girls in a Japanese high school who form a last-minute band to play the Blue Hearts' classic “Linda Linda” at their school festival, with a quiet Korean exchange student unexpectedly stepping in as their lead singer.Mike White is joined by Chance Huskey of GKIDS to talk about the film's enduring charm, its place in the coming-of-age canon, and GKIDS's North American release. From Yamashita's understated style to Doona Bae's breakout performance, this conversation riffs on the film's infectious energy, youthful vulnerability, and what makes it resonate almost twenty years later.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-projection-booth-podcast--5513239/support.Become a supporter of The Projection Booth at http://www.patreon.com/projectionbooth

Fashionably late and with Starbucks in hand, because that's just the run of things around here, another three-hour tour of anime nonsense is at hand, bringing both good surprises and shenanigans as far as the eye can see, from the picturesque sights and sounds of AnimEigo and Discotek at this year's Otakon to the madness of the "new" dub for Tai Chi Chasers (a show that, at most, five people will remember), along with plenty of good tidings from San Diego Comic-Con and a slate of upcoming movies to ponder over and question whether or not we want to be around people for some of these films. It'll make sense in context, don't worry. PRODUCER'S NOTE: apologies, once again, for the continued tardiness of these shows, this one in particular. Yes, yes, another late upload, but that's because it's been A WEEK - as most people know. So do enjoy this glorious distraction from the real world as it continues to get more and more enflamed, as we've got good from the Annecy Festival to get to (GKIDS picking things up, Steven Universe returning, and somehow MORE Ninja Kamui coming soon) plus some pre-Anime Expo announcements for CITY (and another show) heading to Prime Video, Gachiakuta getting a same-day dub and a... postshow podcast... coooooool... also Netflix making some interesting moves, Sunrise announcing a new Samurai Troopers series, Shingo Natsume's new project, and plenty of big home video releases coming out in September for you premium box collectors - Frieren, Eizouken, even The Eminence in Shadow. Here is another of Studio Ghibli's heartbreaking masterpieces about chasing your dreams, building beautiful planes, and emotionally wrecking your audience. Is it a love story? A war story? An existential crisis with really good animation? Yes. All of the above. We cry, we dream, we build planes, and question whether following your passion is worth it if it ends in emotional devastation and highly aesthetic aircraft. Spoiler: It is. Kind of. Maybe? Our Links:Ian WolffeSend us a text
The look on Frieren's face says it all. Another year, another terrible attempt at an "awards show" that's riddled with more corporate schmoozing than your annual Christmas party, and it comes with a whole slate of "awards" that we just can't resist riffing on and yelling at Crunchyroll over - especially since this year's event felt a bit off, even compared to recent years. See you back here next year? Maybe? Anyway, there are good things to talk about here, like REMOW releasing shows both old and new (if you can find them), a small dose of manga and light novel announcements with one (or two) very big titles coming stateside, GKIDS (and Toho) delivering the second shot via the Jujutsu Kaisen season 2 compilation film, the Madhouse shoujo crew cooking something fierce for next year, a bit of a leak for an upcoming dub (hint: it's Yaiba), and the JOEN consortium making a pretty interesting move for some upcoming projects. Also, apologies once again for the tardiness - a mini-break happened between recording and release that involved seeing Metallica in the city with 75,000 other people. intro - don't bet on “Bet” (because it sucks) 13:07 - the annual Crunchyroll Anime Awards bitch-fest 1:10:19 - other news items (REMOW, MCM London Comic-Con, Love Bullet manga licensed) 2:03:05 - home video announcements (Made in Abyss box, City Hunter: Angel Dust, Discotek July slate) Apple Podcasts – https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/podcastona/id1348141210?mt=2 Spotify – https://open.spotify.com/show/2JZLO3LfoeHepomejTw4TP iHeartRadio – https://www.iheart.com/podcast/256-podcastona-43099114/ TuneIn – https://tunein.com/podcasts/Podcasts/PodcastONA-p1249922/ As always, check out surrealresolution.com for more content, updates on the show, our continued news posts, reviews, and our fellow podcasts.

The latest film from Kyoto Animation veteran Yamada Naoko – known for K-On!, A Silent Voice, and Tamako Market – arrived in American theaters courtesy GKids this weekend, and both Sean and Jonathan made trips to the theater to check it out. Now working with Science SARU, Yamada's voice is as singular as ever, and while The Colors Within returns to some familiar narrative territory for the director – high-school students forming a band – the way this story is told is singular. It's an aggressively low-key, gentle narrative about quiet but profound emotions, and it builds to a musical climax that is an absolute knockout – one we couldn't resist recording a podcast about. Enjoy! And please look forward to Season 5 of Japanimation Station, our ‘Grand Tour' of anime, which we are excited to announce will be premiering Sunday, March 16th, 2025! This week on The Searchers, Kevin, Ben and Chris discuss the latest film from legendary director Hayao Miyazaki, How Do You Live? Unfortunately it was re-titled by GKids to "The Boy and the Heron," which the three of us agree was a dumb move by the distributor. We meditate over why Miyazaki chose this as his potential last film, and why it was something that pulled him from retirement. Historical trends, modern Japanese culture, personal reflection, the gorgeous animation, and the comparison to other animated works are thoughtfully discussed. Were we over-hyped? Or is this the best Studio Ghibli film of all time? Listen and find out. Submit your mailbags to us at thesearcherspodcast@gmail.com. Thank you. "The Boy And The Heron" had its North American premiere at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival, where it was 2nd runner-up to the People's Choice Award. The new Hayao Miyazaki film has garnered strong reviews, winning Best Animated Feature from the New York and Los Angeles Film Critics and has now been nominated for two Golden Globe Awards for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Score for Miyazaki's close collaborator Joe Hisaishi. The world-renowned Japanese composer has scored all but one of Miyazaki's films, and his latest is receiving considerable praise. Hisaishi was kind enough to spend a few minutes talking with us about his work on the film, which you can listen to below. Please be sure to check out the film, now playing in theaters from GKIDS, which is up for your consideration in all eligible categories at this year's Academy Awards. Thank you, and enjoy! 10 years ago, hand-drawn film Ernest & Celestine, about the unlikely pairing of a bear and a mouse, charmed moviegoers and Academy members. It earned a Best Animated Feature Oscar nomination alongside Hayao Miyazaki's final film at the time, The Wind Rises, and CG blockbusters Frozen, The Croods and Despicable Me 2. This Friday September 1st, GKIDS will release a sequel feature in theaters, with the title characters on their biggest and most meaningful journey yet. Here's my conversation with the directors of Ernest & Celestine: A Trip to Gibberitia, Jean-Christophe Roger and Julien Chheng.
