Hear me out, we get rid of Haru and move Arrietty and her family into the mansion. Everyone would be happy, safe, and you can't tell me that wouldn't have been a better ending. All I'm saying is, we can get better help that isn't prejudiced towards the Borrowers. Is that too much to ask?Our Links:Ian WolffeSend us a text

Though not technically a Miyazaki film, the gang believes that 2010's Arrietty belongs in his pantheon of works with Studio Ghibli nestled in between Ponyo and The Wind Rises, with thematic and artistic similarities to Miyazaki's more carefree films like My Neighbor Totoro. It's a film that leans heavily on Ghibli's masterful work with scenery, colors, and the whimsy of Arrietty's mini-world, but falters somewhat without a strong main (human) character in Shō (or Shawn) or a particularly strong emotional throughline. If you're like Marcus and enjoy a movie paced like a relaxed afternoon walk, then look no further than this magical Secret World. Content warning: SPOILERS, strong language.

Miyazaki Club returns to discuss 2010’s “The Secret World of Arrietty,” a Studio Ghibli production with a screenplay by Hayao Miyazaki based on a series of children’s books. Why are we so unnerved by the linear storyline and lack of weirdness? Why does Jason have Bay Leaf head canon? And why is surface tension the true star of the show? Jason Snell with Steve Lutz, Moisés Chiullán, John Siracusa and Aleen Simms.

This week's episode was on 2010's The Secret World of Arrietty and it was a very nice and welcome surprise. Generally, we aren't huge fans of the craziness with faces and animation that usually comes with Ghibli, but this one actually kind of resonated with us. The visuals are beautiful like always, but the detail in how the borrowers move around and live was very cool to see.Want to join us live? When a character in Narnia has "read all the wrong books," you know they're in for a difficult time. But spending time in Narnia does a lot to compensate for a bad literary diet. What, though, about our kids, who all live well after the Narnian apocalypse and need good books to thrive in our world? What are "the right books," and how do we get our children to read them? Heck, how do we find them for ourselves, for that matter? Chris' guests this week are Angela Teal and Marena Bleech, who, with their powers combined, form In The Burrow Books. You can follow them on Instagram for more recommendations: @intheburrowbooks. You can also find Angela Teal's (a.k.a. J. Reese Bradley's) books, the Brumbletide series (which my eight-year-old is currently enjoying), here. Among other things, we discuss: Why Christians should go to the library Ideological conformity among "top five" publishers Motivating kids and competing with screens "On Fairy Stories," by J.R.R. Tolkien "On Three Ways of Writing for Children," by C.S. Lewis Why you should judge books by their illustrations Among other things, we recommend: Harry Potter Inkheart The Wrinkle in Time series Anything by Roald Dahl, who was a mean old cuss The Borrowers Grimm's Fairy Tales The Wind in the Willows (illustrated by Arthur Rackham) Anne of Green Gables The Secret Garden Peter and Wendy Brambly Hedge Beatrix Potter Beverly Cleary's Ramona books The Indian in the Cupboard The Magic Treehouse series Picture books: The Little House by Virginia Lee Burton The Naming and I Believe:The Nicene Creed illustrated by Pauline Baynes Beatrix Potter's books (but avoid the new fake stuff not drawn by her as you would avoid Mr. MacGregor's garden--sold under her name, too!). Astrid Sheckels' Hector Fox series Mr. Bliss, by J.R.R. Tolkien Ferdinand, by Munro Leaf Post-show recommendations from Marena: Amy Grimes does some of the most beautiful work. I highly recommend her book(s) and giving her a follow. I adore these Enid Blyton picture books. They're great for early readers. I think one of my favorite picture books (which of course, I didn't mention) is The Cottage At the End of the Lane which is worth having if you can get it. Like I said, Brambly Hedge is the best! Astrid Sheckels was one I mentioned that's a great current author/illustrator. Of course, A Book of Narnians is wonderful. This is such a beautiful book of poetry. (And anything by Tasha Tudor is worth having) I'm also a big Winnie-the-Pooh fan, and any book with Ernest Shepherd illustrations. Post-show recommendations from Chris: My friend J.D. Peabody's middle grade book series, The Inkwell Chronicles is a lot of fun (“The Inklings” is a secret society of authors far larger and older than the Oxford group with Lewis and Tolkien). He also wrote an article on middle grade books for Christianity Today that I'm going to release a podcast about soon. I didn't talk about the Prydain Chronicles or the Earthsea books as great fantasy books that aren't necessarily Christian, but they were absolutely vital (though I didn't get into Earthsea until college) I have a Pauline Baynes (out of print) book that is a beautiful illustration of the Nicene Creed. Spells of Enchantment (collection of stories), edited by Jack Zipes Tales before Tolkien (collection of stories), edited by Douglas Anderson My wife Glencora's children's book and my far less successful one, where we tried to create engaging (if not very professional) illustrations for good poems Our book about Christmas, Twelve Tide, which has lots of literature excerpts and has done a bit better. The Never Ending Story (the book!) by Michael Ende The Half Magic series, by Edward Eager Five Children and It, by E. Nesbit The Book of Wonder, by Lord Dunsany Movies and TV Series: The Secret World of Arrietty (there are actually better Miyazaki films (such as the most recent one), though, and they are all absolutely gorgeous. He's not afraid to be still. I have to mention two of the hand-drawn Irish films influenced by Miyazaki, The Secret of Kells and Song of the Sea. Best of all (and most American), the series Over the Garden Wall, which is funny, beautiful, moral, and creepy. Here's the first episode (though the rest you have to buy—worth it!) But what about new children's books and middle-grade fiction? Next time: Middle-grade author J.D. Peabody weighs in. Check out his article on the subject in Christianity Today. Picking up straight where season one left off:Lina is furious to discover she's risked everything on a boat stuck at anchor and void of supplies. With dwindling water and plenty of injuries, a traumatised Arrietty is faced with the reality of killing Jimmy. All the while a new adversary is waiting patiently for them to make a mistake.

[School of Movies 2023] A strange period for Ghibli brings us to the end of our current run, still with the closing triumph of Spirited Away (2000) to cap this body of work off, as well as this year's The Boy and the Heron paving the way for a future tenth instalment. What we are looking at is the last film from Isao Takahata (who died only five years later) the visually resplendent as well as distinctive Princess Kaguya, which is my favourite of his works, but still has one glaring bad decision inherent to the edit. Then there's the most astonishing surprise from this entire project, which is quite how I unexpectedly adored When Marnie was There (from Hiromasa Yonebayashi, the director of Arrietty). The most delicate, Gothic tale in their back catalogue. After that, yet another film that deliberately defies the established Ghibli aesthetic, the first collaboration with a non-Japanese director Michael Dudok de Wit and the wordless caveman-accessible tale of a red turtle (who is secretly a woman, or vice versa). And then for maximum shame, the definite WORST Ghibli film ever made, or that ever will be made; Earwig and the Witch, directed by Goro Miyazaki. A film so awful it dragged his father out of retirement yet again. But to end on a pleasant note, we talk about both the RPG video game Ni no Kuni and the freshly established "Studio Ponoc" and their debut "Mary and the Witch's Flower". Truly the child of Ghibli, and a team we hope will continue making beautiful films far beyond our lifespans. 2013: The Tale of the Princess Kaguya (0m 35s) 2014: When Marnie Was There (16m 50s) 2016: The Red Turtle (29m 30s) 2020: Earwig and the Witch (45m 35s) 2017: Mary and the Witch's Flower (1h 4m 20s)
[School of Movies 2023] With the grandfather of the studio, Hayao Miyazaki retired and his son Goro not warmly welcomed by the fans, there was now an enormous question mark over the future of Ghibli that persists to this day. Luckily, there was still amazing talent to be found within their walls. Hiromasa Yonebayashi (better known as Maro) made his directorial debut with one of our faviourites, which positively cries out for watching in HD, The Secret World of Arrietty. It's the tale -adapted from yet another classic children's fantasy book- of tiny people who live unnoticed in our houses, and the perils of their survival. Notable for its different British and American voice actor teams, since over here we got Saoirse Ronan and Tom Holland! After this, Goro attempted a second movie about confused teenagers, this time with a more delicate touch which achieves it low-key melodrama qualities. And in the absence of a breakout new direction, his father Hayao came back out of retirement to direct one of his most sobering reflections on aviation and war, with The Wind Rises (which is far more appealing to me than Oppenheimer's handling of similar themes this year). 2010: The Secret World of Arrietty (1m 55s) 2011: From Up On Poppy Hill (29m 30s) 2013: The Wind Rises (45m 35s)
With the second entry of September for our Studio Ghibli series, we turn to yet another novel adaptation with The Secret World of Arrietty. But more importantly, the group comes to the same realization throughout their discussion; we are all gluttons for closure.

Based on an adaptation of the 1952 novel The Borrowers by Mary Norton, The Secret World of Arrietty by Studio Ghibli is still beloved by many watchers for it's beautiful storytelling and imaginative world-building. While spending the summer at his aunt's house, Shou gets a glimpse of a tiny girl and soon finds out they are living under the floorboards; collecting and surviving on bits of human possessions. Despite her parents' warnings, Arrietty befriends Shou, stirring up unexpected events that change their lives forever. This week we cover a whimsical tale of a young girl, named Arrietty, going on her first “borrowing” mission with her father, and the sickly boy, named Shawn, who just will not leave her alone. Both Shawn and Arrietty struggle to find out how they belong in a will they won't they scenario that may leave you feeling queasy, since she's a tiny 6 inch tall teenage Borrower (basically like a mythological brownie) and he's a twelve year old human boy who is about to undergo heart surgery. Why does he see a creature akin to a fairy without wings as a potential love interest you might ask? Well, you'll just have to tune in to find out, dear listener! It was another recommendation from Angel from Chile. But this time it was not as great as the other ones that were recommended but it still was a solid choice. The story was solid especially since it was adapted from a 1950s children's book. The artwork and thought that went into it was solid and the world-building made it a beautiful work of art like always. But sadly even with all that it was still a meh experience for us.Next week's choice is The Land Of Leadale. Have you seen next week's choice or one of the previous ones? Hi friends! This week, we are continuing our streak of feel-good movies with the 2010 Japanese Anime film The Secret World of Arrietty. The film tells the story of a young Borrower befriending a human boy, while trying to avoid being detected by other humans. This is a nice film to follow our discussion on Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, in that it creates a miniature world full of whimsy and wonder. What are your thoughts on the film? This film made over $145 million dollars and won the Animation Film of the Year in Japan and was created by Studio Ghibli.Did you miss the video premier of this episode? This week we are taking a short break from kdramas and talking about some Studio Ghibli films. Studio Ghibli is a Japanese animation studio that is known worldwide for their films. We are both very big lovers of Ghibli and have watched a lot of their films. Today we are talking about three films which are: Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, Spirited Away, and The Secret World of Arrietty. We've seen all three of these films more then once and we love all of them. We will be talking about the characters, plot, atmosphere, and over all storytelling and messages that these films portray. We had so much fun talking about them and we hope you enjoy!
