Em (Verbal Diorama podcast) and Clare (W-Rated podcast) join Flixwatcher remotely to review Clare's choice Howls Moving Castle. Howl's Moving Castle is a 2004 Japanese Studio Ghibli animation written and directed by the legendary Hayao Miyazaki. Howls Moving Castle blends fantasy, multiple kingdoms, wizardry, romance and strong anti-war messages. A young woman called Sophie is a victim of a spell cast on her by the Witch of the Waste, who transforms her into a 90-year-old woman. To try and break the curse she follows a turnip head scarecrow to Howls Castle and jumps onboard as a cleaning lady. While onboard she befriends Howls apprentice Markl and a fire demon named Calcifer, who makes a deal with her to help her break the spell. To sub or the dub? The English dub of Howls Moving Castle stars Jean Simmons, Emily Mortimer, Lauren Bacall, Christian Bale (on top form), Josh Hutcherson and Billy Crystal (particularly brilliant as Calcifer) and is recommended. Howls Moving Castle has stunning animation and weird and wonderful characters so it is no surprise that it scores very highly for recommendability, even slightly lower scores for small screen still give it a very respectable overall rating of 4.31. Howl's Moving Castle, a beautifully animated tale following a hat shop owner, Sophie, and how she gets wrapped up in the chaotic but magical world of witches and wizards. From the very beginning, we understand what kind of character Sophie is by how the people around her react and judge her; she places herself as unimportant. Her heart is closed to herself, but is open for others so that they can enjoy their lives whilst she takes care of everything else. But she is not the only one with worries about the heart. As the story unfolds, the more we realise that Sophie has a lot more in common with the fantastical world of witches and wizards than first realised. But having someone in common, is that enough? what can we realise about this story? Let's find out. Happy Folge 64!

The siblings are bookending their coverage of Ani-May with another Ghibli classic, Howl's Moving Castle (2004). Carie and Ross break down Hayao Miyazaki's adaptation of a book by Diana Wynne Jones, about a young witch, ignorant of her power, who must embark on a journey of growth and empowerment in order to save the wizard she loves from doom. Ross gets real sick of Howl real quick, and Carie falls in love all over again with the marvelous performances of the voice cast, including the legendary Lauren Bacall. However, the evil Witch of Waste (Lauren Bacall) takes issue with their budding relationship and casts a spell on young Sophie, which ages her prematurely. Now Howl must use all his magical talents to battle the jealous hag and return Sophie to her former youth and beauty.
If there was every truly a "most handsome boy in all of anime" then it would surely be Howl from this film. Miyazaki is at it again with the sheer whimsy in his 2004 creation which we're talking all about in this episode! Cubby holes for your boots, the best way to eat eggs, and the origin of chicken and waffles are all discussed as well as a little bit about this movie (I guess if that's why you're actually here for some reason) so sit down, listen in, and let us help carry the heavy burden of your heart by interjecting a little bit of WHIMSY in your life for like an hour or so. We all need a little wholesome in our lives right about now! Welcome to week two of our Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month coverage as we treat ourselves to the wonderful world of Studio Ghibli, in what will certainly not be the last time we take a bite out of Hayao Miyazaki's monumental contribution to cinema. We will take many bites. We will turn into pigs. Our selection this time around features an OG (though debatably not Ghibli) Miyazaki film with Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, along with the award winning Spirited Away, and the questionable follow up of Howl's Moving Castle. Join us as we gawk over food that should not look that good animated, gush over cute a.f. spirit creatures, and try to stop all wars and heal that planet. That's the POWER of Miyazaki bay-bee!
