You may have heard of the idiom 'once in a blue moon' to describe an event that doesn't happen often. But can the Moon really be blue? Our closest neighbour in this vast galaxy, the Moon, orbits the Earth like a natural satellite. Unlike many of the other planets in our Solar System, ours only has the one moon. If you flew to it, you would land on grey rocks. This is because the lunar surface is made from mostly magnesium, iron and other minerals of that colour. But, if you're lucky to have clear skies under the curtain of night, you may be able to admire its luminosity. You might even see that it seems to change shape and hue. It's important to understand that the Moon reflects light from the Sun as it orbits the Earth, and that light bounces back to the Earth. The position of the Moon, Sun and the Earth determines how much of the Moon we see. The new Moon appears almost invisible in the sky as it is in total darkness. This is the opposite to the full Moon which is completely lit up. There are eight different phases to the lunar cycle between a full Moon and a new Moon, each lasting around 28 days. In fact, the word 'month' takes its root from 'Moon' because it was almost equal to the lunar phases. The other phases include the crescent, quarter and gibbous phase. Crescent originates from the Latin verb 'crescere', meaning 'to increase', and so it is the phase just before and after a new Moon as it takes a concave shape. The quarter will show half of the Moon. 'Gibbous' gets its root from the Latin term 'gibbus' which applied to the Moon's convex shape. These shapes are determined by the adjectives 'waning', to get smaller, and 'waxing', to get bigger. So now you know how we've named the shapes, what about those mesmerising colours? The light waves that reach our eyes can vary due to the Moon's position on the horizon and pollution. This is known as Rayleigh scattering. When the Moon is low, light travels through the densest part of the atmosphere and shorter waves of blue scatter away. This leaves only the red and orange light waves to reach us. A warmer atmosphere, as well as smoke from wildfire, may increase the scattering effect as well, making the Moon appear less dull in spring and summer. This is why it's more likely for you to look up and see a pink Moon in April, a golden Moon in May and July, and even a red coloured Moon in the month of June.
As the Gibbous Moon grows larger, you can see new details coming into view as the day-night line progresses across the lunar surface each night. Support this podcast: https://www.deltapublicmedia.org/donate/

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for October 3, 2025 is: gibbous JIB-us adjective Gibbous is most often used to describe the moon or a planet when it is seen with more than half but not all of the apparent disk illuminated. // The waxing gibbous moon provided the perfect lighting for a night of spooky storytelling around the campfire. The Moon slides along one of the horns of Taurus tonight. At nightfall, the bull's bright eye, the star Aldebaran, is to the lower right of the Moon. And the tip of the horn, El Nath, is closer to the left or lower left of the Moon. By the time they set, in the wee hours of the morning, El Nath will stand close above the Moon. The Moon is in its “waxing gibbous” phase. “Gibbous” means the Sun is lighting up more than half of the lunar hemisphere that faces our way. “Waxing” means that more of that half is being lit up every night. The Moon will keep getting “fatter” until it's full, a week from today. “Gibbous” comes from a Latin word that means “hump.” It can be applied to anything that appears to have a hump on its back, such as a camel. A gibbous Moon appears to have a hump on top of its round half. Planets can appear gibbous as well. Mercury and Venus are inside Earth's orbit around the Sun, so they can follow the same cycle of phases as the Moon — from thin crescents to almost full. We don't see them as new or full because, during those phases, they're passing between Earth and the Sun, or behind the Sun. Planets outside Earth's orbit never appear in a crescent phase, but they can appear gibbous, depending on our viewing angle. Stars, on the other hand, are always full. They generate their own light, so the viewing angle doesn't matter — unlike the Moon, which will have a “hump” on its back for another week. Script by Damond Benningfield
After the Full Moon of January 25 the shape of the lunar disc will decrease into a thinner oval each night called the Waning Gibbous.

Jim Rutledge and Matt Hamilton get their first chance to catch up on a long feast weekend of sports for the Wisconsin sports teams -- the Packers win vs. Detroit on Thanksgiving, the Badgers reclaiming the Axe against Minnesota, and Badgers volleyball once again clinching a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. Jim provides his reaction to the Packers' win by asking why fans aren't giving Joe Barry and apology for how good the defense has been. Matt, Jim and Primetime all share their current feeling about Jordan Love after perhaps his best win of the season during the Love-O-Meter. Chris Orr joins the show to talk Badger football's win against the Gophers. Jim starts by asking Chris if he would take a bite out of the mascot in the Pop Tart Bowl, and then they get into a conversation about how the team's roster will change with the transfer portal opening next week and what the team's upcoming Bowl game could look like for some of the team's (likely) outgoing players like Braelon Allen.
In a special event, the guys recap week 12 INCLUDING their immediate reactions to the VIkings/Bears on MNF. Adam wears a giant hat, Dustin gets a rare W, and Jordan Love is a 100% guaranteed first ballot hall of famer (who was robbed of his Turkey).
Even though the nights are cooling down, throw on that coat and grab your binoculars for a look at the Moon! There are many special features to look for.

Something wicked this way comes. The turning of the sphere's wait for no one and time is running out. The Nearlies now have the location of their enemies next move: the Legendary Briar tower where Rapunzel was held so long ago has once again become her prison. With a legend like her, the realms could be rallied to a common cause, but her mother has never been one to give her up easily and the Nearlies are about to find out few enemies are worse to have than a mother scorned and there will be terrible prices to pay indeed if they truly wish to become heroes.
