This concept emphasizes the importance of providing support and solidarity to the people of Haiti, who have faced significant challenges due to natural disasters, political instability, and economic hardship. Offering a helping hand can take many forms, including financial aid, humanitarian assistance, and development projects that empower communities and promote sustainable growth. The human brain works very hard behind the scenes even in the most mundane aspects of daily life, like enjoying a nice day or determining the meaning of chit-chat with a friend. Ferreting out the basis and structures of our brain's labor is the domain of Daniel Yon, a psychologist and neuroscientists and director of the Uncertainty Lab at Birkbeck, University of London. In this Social Science Bites podcast, Yon - author of the 2025 book A Trick of the Mind: How the Brain Invents Your Reality -- details for interviewer David Edmonds why he feels that just as science itself represents a solid - but not "bullet-proof" way of interpreting the natural world, science also well describes how the brain itself does the same. "I think that at the heart of what I think science and the brain share is this preoccupation with building theories and models based on the data that you've gathered and using those theories to make sense of the world around you. That's a very powerful way to make sense of things," he explains, before adding the caveat, "but it also means that once you start to build your theories and paradigms, they can become the filter and the lens through which everything else gets seen." Yon's scholarship has earned him a number of honors, such as the Experimental Psychology Society's EPS Prize and the Janet Taylor Spence Award from the Association for Psychological Science. He has also been named a Rising Star by the Cognitive Neuroscience Society and received a mid-career fellowship by the British Academy.

War correspondent and former Special Forces operator Michael Yon rejoins the program to deliver a hard-earned assessment of the escalating Iran–Israel conflict — drawing on decades of frontline experience and deep study of military history. This conversation is a sober look at the realities of war beyond headlines and talking points. Yon breaks down how propaganda shapes public perception, how narratives are constructed to justify escalation, and why understanding information warfare is just as critical as understanding battlefield movements. We examine the deeper forces driving this conflict — trade routes, strategic resources, regional power dynamics, and ideology — and how these core elements have fueled nearly every major war throughout history. Yon also shares his perspective on the risk of a broader global confrontation if current trajectories continue, and what signs to watch for as events unfold. Most importantly, we discuss how individuals can look beyond emotionally charged messaging and analyze conflicts through a strategic lens to better discern where truth may lie amid competing narratives. You can follow Yon at https://substack.com/@michaelyonSee exclusives and more at https://SarahWestall.Substack.com

UN COUP DE MAIN AUX HAÏTIENS YON KOUTMEN POU AYISYEN
The human brain is so unbelievably complex that we barely understand its most basic functions. According to the British neuroscientist Daniel Yon, our brains - which some speculate are the most mysteriously complicated things in the universe - might even have minds of their own. In his latest book, A Trick of the Mind, Yon argues that our brains quite literally create our own realities. So is all reality entirely subjective, then? Not quite. Yon describes the brain as functioning like a scientist, constantly generating predictive models based on past experiences to interpret ambiguous sensory data. Rather than passively receiving information, we actively construct our perceptions through these mental frameworks. This isn't pure subjectivity, though—it's what he calls a "duet" between external stimuli and internal predictions. Our brains need these biases and preconceptions to make any sense of the world's overwhelming complexity. Without them, we'd be lost in what Yon calls "chaotic, volatile, unstable mystery." It all sounds like something out of a particularly fabulistic Jorge Luis Borges short story. Maybe it is. 1. Your brain acts like a scientist, not a camera The brain doesn't passively receive reality—it actively generates theories and predictions about the world based on past experiences. We're constantly creating models to interpret ambiguous sensory data, making perception an active construction rather than passive reception.2. Some biases are actually rational necessities Contrary to behavioral economics' focus on "irrational" biases, Yon argues that preconceptions and biases are often essential for making sense of an ambiguous world. Without these mental frameworks, we'd be overwhelmed by raw sensory data—lost in "chaotic, volatile, unstable mystery."3. We're "prisoners of our own pasts" Our brains use past experiences to predict and interpret the present, creating a self-perpetuating cycle. This explains why changing entrenched thought patterns is so difficult—we literally perceive the world through filters created by our history, both personal and cultural.4. Knowledge-seeking has the same neural currency as basic survival drives The brain treats new information and understanding with the same reward systems it uses for food or water. This explains why humans pursue knowledge even at personal risk (like students studying philosophy under Communist surveillance)—our "wanderlust" is biologically encoded.5. Mental health differences reflect alternative predictive models, not deficits Depression, anxiety, and neurodivergent conditions can be understood as different ways the brain models reality rather than as illnesses or deficits. In unpredictable environments, anxiety might be a perfectly rational response to perceived instability.Keen On America is a reader-supported publication.
Send us a textThe story of Reverend Davidson, the vicar of Stiffkey dominated the newspapers in the early 1930s. This is the story. The Lion and Albert, By Stanley Holloway was a comic monologue inspired by actual events they had heard about in 1932. The events in this podcast happened in 1937. Nevertheless, I have put the lyrics here for anyone unfamiliar with the verse. There's a famous seaside place called BlackpoolThat's noted for fresh air and funAnd Mr. and Mrs. RamsbottomWent there with young Albert, their sonA grand little lad were young AlbertAll dressed in his best, quite a swellWith a stick with an horse's head handleThe finest that Woolworth's could sellThey didn't think much to the oceanThe waves they were piddlin' and smallThere was no wrecks and nobody drowneded'Fact, nothin' to laugh at at all!So, seeking for further amusementThey paid, and went into the zooWhere they'd lions and tigers and camelsAnd old ale and sandwiches, tooThere were one great big lion called WallaceHis nose was all covered with scarsHe lay in a somnolent postureWith the side of 'is face on the barsNow Albert had heard about lionsHow they was ferocious and wildTo see Wallace lyin' so peacefulWell it didn't seem right to the childSo straightway the brave little fellerNot showin' a morsel of fearTook 'is stick with the horse's head handleAnd shoved it in Wallace's earYou could see that the lion didn't like itFor givin' a kind of a rollHe pulled Albert inside the cage with himAnd swallowed the little lad whole! Then Pa, who had seen the occurrenceAnd didn't know what to do nextSaid "Mother, yon lion's ate Albert!"And Mother said "Ee, I am vexed"Then Mr. and Mrs. Ramsbottom, quite rightlyWhen all is said and doneComplained to the animal keeperThat the lion had eaten their sonThe keeper was quite nice about itHe said "What a nasty mishapAre you sure that it's your boy he's eaten?"Pa said, "Am I sure? There's his cap!"The manager had to be sent forHe came and he said "What's to-do?"Pa said "Yon lion's ate AlbertAnd him in his Sunday clothes, too!"Then Mother said "Right's right, young feller-I think it's a shame and a sinFor a lion to go and eat AlbertAnd after we paid to come in"The manager wanted no troubleHe took out his purse right awaySayin' "How much to settle the matter?"Pa says "What do you usually pay?"But Mother had turned a bit awkwardWhen she thought where her Albert had goneShe said "No, someone's got to be summonsed!"So that was decided uponThen off they went to the police stationIn front of the Magistrate chapThey told him what happened to AlbertAnd proved it by showing his capThe Magistrate gave his opinionThat no one was really to blameAnd he said that he hoped the RamsbottomsWould have further sons to their nameAt that Mother got proper blazin'"And thank you, sir, kindly, " said she-"What, waste all our lives raisin' childrenTo feed ruddy lions? Not me!"
