#85: We're back with another segment of How I Got Started, highlighting dope Angelenos in different fields. From the arts, to entertainment, to advocacy – we're talking to people who are doing cool things you should know about. Gina Young wears a bunch of hats: theater director, musician, songwriter, DJ... But there's a common thread in their work: they create community, and foster spaces that LA's queer folk are hungry for. Join HTLA host Brian De Los Santos as he talks to Gina about all the above and more. You can find more of Gina's work on their website: https://www.ginayoung.com/sorority

Today, riot grrrl veteran Gina Young joins Izzy to discuss growing up in a catholic household and finding herself in New York City's anti-folk scene in the 2000s. Other topics of discussion include their role as secretary of their local chapter of riot grrrl, organizing protests against rock radio's sexist codes of conduct, and that one time Regina Spektor performed in her living room. ✨ MORE ABOUT GINA YOUNG ✨Gina Young (she/they) is an award-winning writer, director, songwriter, performer, and curator whose work weaves music, movement, and text. In this first segment Gina Young introduces the concept of the Relationship Dance. Using the idea of a dance, if two couples are in sync, they seem to flow around the dance floor effortlessly. However, when we get out of tune or there is a break in our rhythm, problems begin to emerge. Gina introduces the concept of FAT (Feelings, Actions, and Thoughts) to help couple analyze where their dance may be off.
In this final segment of the Relationship Dance with Gina Young, the message addresses those marriage relationships in unhealthy patterns. Using the acronym TEMPO (Trigger, Emotion, Meaning, Protective action, and Organize), Gina encourages individuals to identify what they are experiencing and to have conversations with your spouse.
Continuing with the Relationship Dance, Gina Young talks about some of the dance patterns that may arise in marriage. Beginning with the healthy steps of pursue-pursue, problems begin to arise when the couple begins to fall into the pursue-withdraw pattern. If these problems are not addressed, a withdraw-withdraw pattern might emerge.

MALE FANTASIES, MALE FANTASIES is everything run by male fantasies? If you believe Margaret Atwood the male gaze is inescapable. If a man isn't looking at you (but tbh when is he not?) then you are your own voyeur, always seeing yourself as male culture (“entertainment”) has taught you to -- whether you know it or not. “Protagonism is propaganda that protects and perpetuates privilege,” Jill Soloway announced at TIFF this fall. Gina Young put it another way: “The people with all the power control the stories that get told.” And the stories they're telling are often narratives that reduce women to objects and false dichotomies, narratives that are designed to teach us how to behave, how to be in service of a male agenda, how to be. This episode is about taking control of the ways we're seen -- the ways we're looked at, in what context, on whose terms, and for what purposes. This episode is about two women and two ideas in conversation: What would media look like if we told our own stories? And how could those stories give us permission to really be ourselves? THE FEMALE GAZE is how we see the world, ourselves, & each other. In this episode WE DISSECT DIRECTOR JILL SOLOWAY'S MASTER CLASS: Jill Soloway perfectly articulates our rage, suggestions for what cis-males should do in the feminist utopia, and why Zack Morris is the epitome of white dude fragility. WE VISIT GINA YOUNG'S FEMINIST ACTING CLASS: The tragedies of Hollywood typecasting, queer casting calls and feminist sororities, and how to maintain your sanity when your body is a commodity. This episode features music by DEATH VALLEY GIRLS and INTI WAWA. Hosting by NICOLE KELLY & PHOEBE ÜNTER. Produced by Phoebe and mastered by audiobruja ELYSSA DUDLEY. 1. Send this to a friend who fucks the patriarchy. 2. CALL 406-28-BITCH & say whatever you want.
Through her exploratory workshop Feminist Acting Class, presented as part of The Hammer Museum's Bureau of Feminism initiative, queer feminist playwright, director, musician, and performer Gina Young hopes to expand the roles for women and non binary people in the theatre by providing a space free from restrictive gender expectations for performers to experiment with roles that would otherwise be off-limits.
