In this episode of IsraelCast, host Steven Shalowitz welcomes independent writer and researcher Melissa Brodsky, author of The Lioness Writes on Substack. Known for her meticulous use of primary sources and documented evidence, Melissa explores the historical blind spots, propaganda networks, and modern-day narratives shaping how Israel and the Jewish people are discussed today. This episode dives into lesser-known chapters of Jewish and Israeli history, including the displacement of Jews from Arab lands, Soviet influence on Palestinian nationalism, and the selective moral outrage often directed at Israel by countries such as Ireland and Spain. They also discuss the dangers of historical ignorance, the rise of antisemitic rhetoric online and on campuses, and the importance of confronting misinformation with facts. The conversation also turns personal, as Melissa reflects on losing friends after October 7, navigating online hate, and building communities of truth-seekers and allies. From Jewish pirates in Jamaica to the enduring lessons of history, this episode is a powerful reminder that knowing the past is essential to understanding the present. Melissa Brodsky is an independent writer and researcher who has made it her mission to document what many would rather ignore. She publishes long-form investigative research and commentary on her Substack, The Lioness Writes, where she has built a readership of more than 4,600 subscribers and reaches an audience of approximately 50,000 followers on Facebook. Her work has also appeared in the Jewish News Syndicate and The Jewish Star.

Frances Brodsky believes that writing her three mystery novels set in the world of bench science has improved her scientific writing. “I love making up titles for my books and chapters,” she says. “One of the best ways to train someone in the lab to focus on their project is for them to come up with the title of a paper that they want to write. That tells them where they're going. Also, when I interview people, I ask them: ‘What is the title of the thesis you plan to write?'”Brodsky, a cell biologist at University College London, writes under the pseudonym B. B. Jordan. Her books feature Celeste Braun, a virologist in San Francisco, California, who uses her scientific expertise to solve mysteries and fight crime. “Sitting down to write these novels, my scientific writing became markedly better,” she says. “The exercise of fiction writing helped me put my work into a narrative.”In the penultimate episode of this six-part podcast series on creativity in science, Brodsky says the discipline of writing a novel has also taught her perseverance, adding: “When you start a writing project, you have to stick with it to get it to the end. Sticking with something and having faith that it will work out is a really good quality to have.” Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

As market dynamics shift, investors are increasingly looking beyond U.S. equities for diversification and return potential. Brodsky shares why non-U.S. small caps—often overlooked and less efficient—can offer compelling valuation opportunities and stronger risk-adjusted returns.  The conversation also examines how structural changes, including the rise of private markets in the U.S., are reshaping the small cap universe, creating a clear divergence between U.S. and non-U.S. companies. Brodsky explains how geopolitical developments, supply chain regionalization, and evolving corporate governance standards are influencing investment opportunities across global markets.  Finally, Brodsky outlines his disciplined, forward-looking approach to value investing—highlighting the importance of cutting through market noise, focusing on long-term fundamentals, and identifying companies positioned for sustainable returns.  Important Disclosures The audio podcast is being provided for informational and educational purposes only and is not meant to be taken as investment advice or a recommendation of any specific investment product or strategy.

Vattenspegel. Översättare: Bengt Jangfeldt. What if the very conversations you're avoiding are the ones that could change everything? In this episode, we explore the hidden cost of silence, and how choosing “peace” over honesty can slowly erode trust, connection, and even joy. Many of us were taught to keep the peace, smooth things over, or stay quiet especially when the stakes are high in families, partnerships, and leadership roles. But as today's conversation reveals, avoiding hard conversations doesn't actually protect relationships. It quietly damages them. This episode is for anyone who knows something needs to be said, but isn't sure how, when, or whether it's safe to say it at all. I'm joined by Amy Brodsky. Amy is Founder and CEO of Sky Partners, a Performance Coaching, Facilitation and Advisory Firm. Amy has spent her career helping CEOs, Leadership Teams, UHNW Families and high-profile individuals navigate their most confidential and complex matters, including challenging team and family dynamics. Amy helps CEOs and Leadership Teams achieve the utmost success through exploring their current thoughts and patterns of behavior while supporting them as they create shifts to increase performance, professional relationships, awareness and peace. Amy has 30 years of experience in leadership, transformational change, negotiation and executive coaching across sectors. She has led client engagements ranging from large-scale mergers and acquisitions, organizational change, and cultural integrations. Amy holds a J.D. from New York Law School, Executive Coaching Certification from Columbia University and B.A. from University of New Hampshire. Her past employers include J.P. She is a well-known speaker on the topic of Family Dynamics, Performance Coaching and Acquisitions. This is not about being confrontational. It's about being honest. It's about understanding the difference between peace and avoidance, and learning how to reclaim your voice without burning bridges. In this episode, we explore: Why avoiding difficult conversations creates fear, dysfunction, and lost potential The emotional dynamics that silently shape families, teams, and organizations The difference between technical problems and adaptive (human) challenges How self-awareness, intentional listening, and inquiry rebuild trust Why psychological safety and dignity are foundational—not optional—for performance About the Guest:Amy Brodsky is a performance coach and advisor who helps CEOs, leadership teams, and families navigate high-stakes conversations, succession planning, and deeply rooted relational challenges. In this special episode, we tackle the second half of the 1963 epic, Cleopatra. In the first part of this double-header, we tried to keep our focus on Cleopatra and Caesar and the initial challenges faced by #TeamCleo. However, today we get to delve into the second half of the movie when Cleopatra and Antony get it on. This means we finally get to discuss ‘Le Scandale', aka the Taylor-Burton affair that developed on the set once these two clapped eyes on each other. Their passion would result in two broken hearts, a publicity sensation and not one, but TWO, marriages (and divorces).Cleopatra (1963) is a classic example of how the context of a film can shape how the history was received. It's hard not to see some weird parallels between Taylor & Burton and Cleopatra & Antony. We need to work on some couple names before this gets too confusing. Cleotony? Antra? Tayton? Burtay? We'll keep workshopping these ideas. Things to listen out for:· Unexpected feline births· The casting couch makes an unwelcome appearance· Studio coups· Editing wars· Broken hearts (#JusticeforSybil&Eddie)· Odd similarities with the production of Spartacus· MORE production problems than you can every imagine! One thing we have concluded after three hours of discussion: don't start shooting a movie without a finished script. If you enjoyed this discussion, you might be interested in checking out The Plot Thickens, who are doing a whole season on Cleopatra (1963).Our SourcesDrs G and Dr Rad discuss ancient sources such as Florus, Cicero, Appian, and of course, Plutarch's Life of Antony.Brodsky, Jack, and Nathan Weiss. In the age of virtual communication, here's how to ensure your messages convey what you mean.Texts. Emails. Slacks. Zooms. We're communicating in more ways than ever, but Andrew Brodsky has a word of warning: Your virtual communication might be sending messages you're not aware of.Brodsky is the author of PING: The Secrets of Successful Virtual Communication. And as a professor of management at the University of Texas McCombs School of Business, he researches the impact of technology on workplace communication. “In virtual communication, there's often missing information,” he says. “As recipients of it, we're searching to fill in the gaps. The problem [is] that the recipient who's making these guesses is often guessing incorrectly.” As his research reveals, variables like typos, the time you schedule a meeting, and even your choice of email signature affect how your messages are received — and how you're perceived. In this episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, host Matt Abrahams and Brodsky explore his PING framework (perspective-taking, initiative, nonverbal awareness, and goals) for mastering digital communication. From understanding when to choose email over a phone call to navigating cameras-on versus cameras-off meetings, he offers practical strategies for ensuring your virtual messages communicate exactly what you intend. To listen to the extended Deep Thinks version of this episode, please visit FasterSmarter.io/premiumEpisode Reference Links:Andrew BrodskyAndrew's Book: PingEp.31 Quick Thinks: How to Shine Online and Excel at Virtual Communication Ep.53 Step Up and Stand Out: How to Create the Right Environment for Communication  Connect:Premium Signup >>>> Think Fast Talk Smart PremiumEmail Questions & Feedback >>> hello@fastersmarter.ioEpisode Transcripts >>> Think Fast Talk Smart WebsiteNewsletter Signup + English Language Learning >>> FasterSmarter.ioThink Fast Talk Smart >>> LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTubeMatt Abrahams >>> LinkedInChapters:(00:00) - Introduction (02:34) - What Is Virtual Communication? Welcome to episode #989 of Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast. Andrew Brodsky is reshaping how we think about work, not by focusing on tasks or tools, but by interrogating how we communicate. A management professor at the McCombs School of Business at The University of Texas at Austin, Andrew specializes in organizational behavior, with a sharp focus on the friction (and possibility) that emerges when human behavior meets digital platforms. With a PhD from Harvard Business School and a BS from Wharton, his work explores everything from how to show emotional authenticity on Zoom to how organizations can build culture without a physical office. In his new book, Ping - The Secrets of Successful Virtual Communication, Andrew offers a science-backed, research-driven guide to the biggest question facing modern professionals: when should something be an email, a Slack, a video call or nothing at all? He pushes past the cliché of "this meeting could've been an email” to examine what kinds of communication actually drive clarity, trust and effectiveness. In this episode, we explore the messy reality of hybrid work, the erosion of “third places” where colleagues used to casually connect, and the deeper organizational consequences of fragmented communication norms. Andrew explains why remote work isn't the root of all workplace disconnection (return-to-office mandates won't fix your culture) and how better communication (intentional, strategic, well-matched to the message) is the real differentiator for teams. We also talk about the long-term implications of this shift: from how loneliness is showing up in employee engagement surveys to how new communication technologies might shape our future work rhythms. Whether you're leading a team, working across time zones, or just trying to get a response to your last message, this conversation offers practical takeaways grounded in deep expertise and real-world research. Andrew's insights cut through the noise and help us see virtual communication not as a limitation, but as an opportunity to be more human, more clear and more connected… no matter the channel. In a world where remote work, Slack threads, and Zoom fatigue dominate, The Art of Charm welcomes Andrew Brodsky, management professor at UT Austin and author of Ping: The Secrets of Successful Virtual Communication. This episode is a masterclass in how to reclaim productivity, enhance visibility, and communicate strategically in a virtual-first world. Andrew introduces the PING Framework — a practical toolkit for navigating digital communication with precision, warmth, and power. If you're feeling drained by back-to-back video calls, unclear on how to network virtually, or unsure how to make your contributions seen and respected — this episode offers the clarity you've been craving. What to Listen For [00:00:00] The one question almost no one asks that instantly improves meetings [00:04:39] Media richness, cue variety, and why Zoom still feels awkward [00:11:43] Introducing the PING Framework: Perspective, Initiative, Nonverbal, Goals [00:16:44] How to create communication boundaries and stop feeling “always on” [00:25:43] Generational differences and why Gen Z hates the thumbs-up emoji [00:29:05] The visibility trap of remote work and how to build presence [00:35:25] Cold messaging: why successful people are more likely to respond than you think [00:44:03] Why asking for advice increases perceived competence — not weakness [00:48:54] How to rekindle faded relationships without making it weird [00:53:47] Bringing back the “virtual water cooler” [00:57:53] Mimicry and digital nonverbal cues that build instant trust Episode Takeaways: Stop defaulting to email or video — ask how people prefer to communicate. It's a subtle power move that builds trust fast. Productivity ≠ Visibility. If no one knows what you're doing, it doesn't count. The people you look up to are getting fewer cold messages than you think. Stand out with brevity, specificity, and a simple ask. Remote communication is not inferior — it's different. Use the PING Framework (Perspective, Initiative, Nonverbal, Goals) to choose the best format for your message. Want better work-life balance? Define communication norms with your team. Dan Brodsky-Chenfeld is widely recognized as one of the most accomplished skydivers in history; a living legend. His journey from mid-western kid to winning multiple gold medals is remarkable, and his ability to distill his experiences into practical leadership strategies has allowed Dan to enrich, empower, and inspire people worldwide.Dan's fascination with human flight began at age five and never let up. He made his first skydive as a freshman at Ohio State, trading labor for jumps while earning a degree in Aviation. By graduation, he was a licensed FAA pilot, parachute rigger, and USPA instructor/jumpmaster.Driven by a passion for competition, Dan moved to California to chase gold on the national and world stage. He soon joined Skydive Perris, where he now runs one of the largest and most respected dropzones in the world—home to over 100 employees and known for its safety, professionalism, and innovation. In 1992, Dan survived a devastating plane crash that took 16 lives, including a teammate he considered a little brother. Dan spent six weeks in a coma and suffered extensive injuries. Doctors doubted he'd survive—let alone skydive again. But within a year, Dan was not only back in the sky—he was back competing. His story of grit and resilience became the foundation of his acclaimed book, Above All Else, and launched a career as a sought-after speaker. From military units and elite universities to Fortune 500 companies, Dan inspires global audiences with powerful lessons on perseverance, teamwork, and mindset.Still active as a coach and mentor, Dan is shaping the next generation of skydivers and leaders. With over 32,000 jumps to his name, he remains a living symbol of passion, purpose, and the power of never giving up.https://www.danbrodsky-chenfeld.com/Support the showCan't get enough of the Journey On Podcast & it's guests? Andrew Brodsky: Ping Andrew Brodsky is an award-winning professor, management consultant, and virtual communications expert at the McCombs School of Business at The University of Texas at Austin. He is an expert in workplace technology, communication, and productivity, and serves as the CEO of Ping Group. He is the author of Ping: The Secrets of Successful Virtual Communication*. We've all heard the well intended advice that having interactions in person is always best. And that being as close to perfect as possible is ideal. Turns out, not always. In this conversation, Andrew and I explore how adapting to the context of tough situations can help you show up in a way that's helpful for the other party and for you. Key Points In virtual interactions, what feels authentic to you may not seem authentic to the person you're interacting with. While video is best for being present, it may not be best when your underlying emotions could leak into a situation. Surface acting helps us all land with the other party more authentically. Audio only can help this land better. If using a less rich medium to communicate (i.e. email instead of a conversation) it's helpful to explain why you made that choice. People who appear perfectly competent may not be as likable. Consider surfacing blunders that aren't central to the core expertise of your work. We often default to the medium that works best for us. Consider what will land best with the other party.
