This week, we talk to journalist and author KATHERINE YESKE TAYLOR (She's A Badass: Women In Rock Shaping Feminism) about the much-requested film PURPLE RAIN!!! We get to discuss Katherine's start at interviewing bands at age 16 and fighting against her highschool newspaper to do so, how she put her book together (interviewing Suzie Quatro to Lydia Lunch to Death Valley Girls), seeing Purple Rain in a movie theater vs. seeing it at home on VHS, how the First Avenue (the lengendary music club in Minneapolis) is such a strong character in the film, the cultural saturation of Prince at this time, the genesis of the film getting made, Prince's complete artistic control & how he did not talk to the press for over 2 years after the film came out, Prince's un-finished first film The Second Coming with director Chuck Statler (director of Devo, Elvis Costello and The Time videos), jamming a movie into a 3 1/3 minute music video during the early 80s, Morris Day's film stealing performance and his post-Purple Rain career, the acting stylings of Prince and his band, the confusing plot point of the bands playing only one song at a time at the club in this movie, the competitive nature of bands, the managment of the club telling Prince not bring his personal shit up onto the stage (when that's all he does!), seeing performers have a meltdown on stage, how much of the movie's storyline doesn't work for modern audiences, the difference between the sexuality of this film vs. his albums, how Prince was also a champion for women in music when men weren't, Wendy & Lisa, When Doves Cry, the final freeze frame of the film & the guitar climax that leading up to it, Whitesnake, how Prince followed up Purple Rain with some of his most esoteric work to date & how at the age of twenty-six Prince already knew that he did not want to do Purple Rain 2!So let's whip our heads quickly towards the camera, and then let's go crazy on this week's episode of Revolutions Per Movie!!KATHERINE YESKE TAYLOR:https://bookshop.org/p/books/she-s-a-badass-women-in-rock-shaping-modern-feminism-katherine-yeske-taylor/19792657?ean=9781493072545@kyt_in_nycREVOLUTIONS PER MOVIE:Host Chris Slusarenko (Eyelids, Guided By Voices, owner of Clinton Street Video rental store) is joined by actors, musicians, comedians, writers & directors who each week pick out their favorite music documentary, musical, music-themed fiction film or music videos to discuss. LA Witch... great tunes, inspired another award approaching show by us... we played some songs by this LA 'garage' band that made a name for themselves in the clubs and have quite the dedicated following.  Once we got started it spun off into a "hey, this other band has a similar sound... dontcha think?"... and it went off into the silly fun chatty stuff we do so well ... like 2 sugared up kids at the park.     Other bands we played tonight:   Yannis & the Yaw, Nirvana, Mazzy Star, the Misfits, Surfin Dead Boys, Messer Chups, Death Valley Girls, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Warm Drag and the Cramps... and likely others.   Some new friends and old friends chime in to this Award Winning Show (hey, "participation ribbon" is an award) presented by idiots (me & Eric) and enjoyed by thousands.   We had a bundle of fun - hope you do to listening to two buddies mince words and play tunes.   You can be part of our Super Secret Schitty Committee - next time we are on - call in and say "Pour Me Another Brother" for fun and prizes.  This underwear isn't getting any newer.  (that's an inside joke?  "yeah, in your PANTS")  - what are we ... eight?

Getting gourmet, a preset on the Yamaha DX7, and obtaining rollercoaster engineering experience. Josh Menashe (Frankie & The Witch Fingers) Frankie and the Witch Fingers - Bonehead / i-Candy 7" (PRE-ORDER)- https://shop.greenwayrecords.com/collections/frontpage/products/frank "Over the past decade Frankie and the Witch Fingers have operated as an outright force of nature, offering up a revelatory form of psych-rock that hits on both a primal and ecstatically mind-bending level. In the making of their new album Data Doom, the Los Angeles-based four-piece forged a sublimely galvanizing sound informed by their love of Afrobeat and proto-punk—a potent vessel for their frenetic meditations on technological change run rampant, encroaching fascism, and corrosive systems of power. Animated by the explosive energy they've brought to the stage in sharing bills with such eclectic acts as Ty Segall and ZZ Top, the result is a major leap forward for one of the most adventurous and forward-thinking bands working today. Rooted in the cerebral yet viscerally commanding songwriting of co-founders Dylan Sizemore (vocals, guitar) and Josh Menashe (lead guitar, synth), Data Doom marks the first Frankie and the Witch Fingers album created with bassist Nikki “Pickle” Smith (formerly of Death Valley Girls) and drummer Nick Aguilar (previously a touring drummer for punk legend Mike Watt). In crafting their most rhythmically complex work to date, the band drew heavily from each new member's distinct sensibilities: Smith tapped into her extensive background in West African drumming (an art form she first discovered thanks to her music-instructor parents), while Aguilar leaned into formative influences like longtime Fela Kuti drummer Tony Allen. Self-produced by the DIY-minded band and recorded direct to tape by Menashe, Data Doom ultimately took shape through countless sessions in their Southeast L.A. rehearsal space, with Frankie and the Witch Fingers allowing themselves unlimited time to explore their most magnificently strange impulses." Lickers Jay and Deon wax poetic on ten of their favorite records from their respective collections which are filed under the letter J. Their choices lead to discussions on Blindboy Boatclub (he rules), the origins of their nicknames (do you even know these guys?), another blind-bought Burger Records beauty (Jay is a total Burger fanboy), Steve Albini (R.I.P.), and much more. Tune in and rock out! --- In the early 1970s, legendary collaborator and self-proclaimed non-musician Brian Eno famously designed a deck of 115 cards containing elliptical imperatives to spark in the user creative connections unobtainable through regular modes of work. He called his creation "Oblique Strategies." For the past half century, countless artists and professionals across the globe have benefited from utilizing the oblique strategies technique when attempting to overcome a lull in creative output. In 2024, idiotic, introverted yet somehow still award-winning* hobby podcasters and self-proclaimed Lightnin' Lickers Jay and Deon found themselves uninspired when contemplating the potential theme of their upcoming thirty-seventh episode. Together, they decided... to default back to the alphabet. Because they have a reasonably solid grasp of the alphabet and how it works. A cesspool of joy, free energy, and the scent of koalas. Bonnie Bloomgarden (Death Valley Girls) "Death Valley Girls, LA's finest purveyors of otherworldly rock n roll, have left little time between their 2023 LP Islands in the Sky and their rollicking new single, "I Am a Wave." The band, which consists of Bonnie Bloomgarden (vocals, organ, Wurlitzer), Larry Schemel (guitar), Sarah Linton (bass), and Rikki Styxx (drums), builds off the strength of their critically acclaimed new project while introducing exciting new sonic terrain. Blending prog, shoegaze, pop, and psych-rock elements, the group lands thrillingly in its own world. Bloomgarden's vocals push up against walls of guitar, crashing and cascading drums, and a sturdy bassline. The group's layered voices gives the song a haunted effect, with bold harmonies coming from every direction. Though the vocals are outstanding, Larry Schemel's various roles as lead guitarist give the song its signature bite. From his Western-inspired introduction melody to a face-melting solo, his versatility is the track's secret weapon. On the final chorus, all of these dueling parts come together for an ecstatic finale, accented by a perfectly placed tambourine. At just two-and-a-half-minutes, "I Am a Wave" takes on the meaning of its title. It crashes out of speakers, lifting listeners to rock and roll heaven and returning them home before they know what happened" Excerpt from https://deathvalleygirls.bandcamp.com/album/i-am-a-wave Death Valley Girls: Bandcamp: https://deathvalleygirls.bandcamp.com/music Instagram: @deathvalleygirls Website: https://linktr.ee/deathvalleygirls Merch: https://churchofpickle.com/collections/death-valley-girls Vinyl: https://suicide-squeeze.myshopify.com/collections/all/death-valley-girls Death Valley Girls Podcast: https://open.spotify.com/show/6kBOnXLHizjqKdF89VMf2y The Vineyard: Instagram: @thevineyardpodcast Website: https://www.thevineyardpodcast.com Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/5Ndle3K... Death Valley Girls - What Are the Odds from the 2023 album Islands in the Sky on Suicide Squeeze. Los Angeles-based garage rockers Death Valley Girls are releasing their fifth record Islands in the Sky on February 24th via Suicide Squeeze. The follow-up to 2020's Under the Spell Of Joy was recorded in a cabin in the California woods in early 2022 following a “mysterious illness” that left frontwoman Bonnie Bloomgarden bedridden from November 2020 to March 2021 which inspired much of the record. “When I was sick I had to sleep most of the day,” Bloomgarden details in a press release. “I kept waking up every few hours with an intense message to take care of the island, feed the island…I have no idea why, but making music for the island kept coming up.”  Our Song of the Day is the lead single off the record “What Are the Odds,” a rollicking riff-ripping scorcher that takes its inspiration from an unlikely source: Madonna. “In ‘I'm A Man Too' we were trying to revisit No Doubt's ‘I'm Just A Girl' but through a new lens,” explains Bloomgarden. “‘What Are The Odds' is in the same way an investigation/revisitation of Madonna's ‘Material Girl' but with a DVG spin.” She continues on to say, “We love to think about consciousness and existence, and we very much believe in some type of reincarnation, but also that this experience isn't linear, there isn't a past and future, there's something else going on! What is it? Is it a simulation, are we simulated girls??” The video for the song sees two versions of the band, one where they're black hoodie-clad amongst a dreary LA landscape and the other a technicolor dreamscape of them lounging at a pool with red beehives. Which one is the simulation is anyone's guess, but I'd personally rather live in the latter. Acid Tongue - "Take Me To Your Leader (feat. Death Valley Girls)" from the 2021 album Arboretum on Freakout Records. This past November, local chairmen of psych-rock Acid Tongue dropped their celebrated third record Arboretum. Their most fully-formed album to date, Arboretum is a joyful, intoxicating psychedelic glam rock opus that employs the many friendships Guy Keltner and Ian Cunningham have made in the music scene for a highly collaborative effort. Our Song of the Day, “Take Me to Your Leader,” sees L.A.-based psych-garage group Death Valley Girls jump in for one of the most rousing tracks on the album. Furious and rollicking, the song blazes in with a message that essentially says, “If the country's burning down, we might as well have fun while it lasts.” Something I can certainly get behind. In a press release, frontwoman Bonnie Bloomgarden shares, “We've talked a lot about trauma, mental health, and how hard it is to live in a human body! One concept that has really been helping during the daily struggle is the perspective shift – that things aren't ‘happening to me,' they're ‘happening for me.' Sometimes if you can, squint your eyes, alter your view, try to see experiences as opportunities to learn and grow! Sometimes that's the best we can do!” Read the full post on KEXP.org Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donate See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
