Jeffrey Miller's "Our Bend in the River" chronicles his family's sustainable homestead journey at Cottonwood Bend Farm. Plus, Fred Eaglesmith's 1997 performance at the Westward Ho.
The best concert three musicheads may have ever seen was Fred Eaglesmith at The Fabulous Westward Ho March 20, 1997, just a few weeks before the disastrous flood. A look back at that night and the rising Grand Forks arts scene before the flood changed everything. Plus, music from Ana Egge, a singer-songwriter from the now nearly deserted Ambrose, North Dakota; and Juneau, Alaska-based artist Josh Fortenbery.
Welcome to Episode 14 of Roots Music Rambler! Join us – hosts Francesca Folinazzo (Frank) and Jason Falls (Falls) as we explore the real roots of the music we love. This week, the Patron Saint of the Dollar Store herself blesses us with her presence. S.G. Goodman joins the show to talk about her meteoric rise to prominence in the Americana music scene. The last 12-18 months have included her being named Americana Emerging Artist of the Year, releasing her second album to high acclaim, having Tyler Childers cover “Space and Time” on his Rustin' in the Rain album, then being asked to join him on stage at the Grand Ole Opry, then going on tour to open for Childers and Jason Isbell … WOW! Goodman sat in with Falls to talk about the rise, her background, the whole Tyler Childers evolution with Space and Time and a lot more. Frank and Falls also talk about the Jason Isbell-Amanda Shires divorce, The 2024 Grammys and more. Falls had a very pointed reaction to Taylor Swift's on-stage announcement of her new album much to his daughter's chagrin. Frank lamented the fact Childers's In Your Love video didn't win. And, of course, both share their regular pickin' the grinnin' recommendations for new music. Falls even asked Goodman to contribute, so she told us who she's listening to during her brief break from the road. Don't forget you can now show your support of the show with Roots Music Rambler's new merch, now available at rootsmusicrambler.com/store. Authentic t-shirts, hats and stickers are now available. Born to a British expat in Kentucky, Nick Teale combines heartfelt Americana authenticity with the eclectic musicianship of British art rockers like Peter Gabriel. He has shared the stage with Louisville's Mama Said String Band and Austin's Scott Collins, and songs from his album "Still in Limbo" have played on airwaves across Kentucky and the U.S. His new single "Angel Wings", releasing to all major outlets on August 2, 2023, draws from vintage blues, folk, country, and classic rock traditions to tell a story of isolation, generational cycles of addiction, and the bleak realities of American poverty. Fans of Sean Rowe, Rag'n'Bone Man, and Fred Eaglesmith will love this bold new single--and fans of any style of music will find something to love in Teale's back catalog! --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/tophillrecording/support

Georgian Bay Roots Summerfolk 2022! This special episode is part Summerfolk greatest hits, and part marking the time of summer when Saugeen and Neyaashiinigmiing host their powwows. Things start in high gear with an OLP classic, followed by Chippewa Travellers, Rick Fines, Beverly Glenn Copeland, back to back gems from Helen Roy, some dancey numbers from The Magic and Lemon Bucket Orchestra, deep cuts from Gene Parsons and Tom Rush, a happy tune from Fred Eaglesmith for all you Fredheads out there and a Connie Kaldor song for the paddlers. It all wraps up with a cut from the Sadies' new album and a message from Buffy Ste. Marie. Chi migwetch, thanks for listening!

Wherein Tom kicks off 2022 by debuting some new music from locals Dave Marshak, Melissa Dawne and Andy Elliott and generally ties up some loose ends GBR's 2021 season never got around to. Listen in to hear cuts from Guelph artists with ties to Grey County: Geordie Gordon and LCON, some Harmonium, a franco cover of a Tom Waits classic courtesy of Fred Pellerin, songs of hope from Njacko Backo and Bob Skelly and a not so hopeful one from Fred Eaglesmith, a very deep Eugene Smith platter released as Jay Smith & the Majestics, a nice dose of heaviness from Collingwood's The High Road and an aggressive call to action from Peterborough's Muriqui, featuring a bass player/administrator with Bluewater District School Board. To round out the rockers, an Aerial hit from yesteryear!
Family is the guiding principle of this episode. The show kicks off with Tom's daughter Nora singing on record for the first time, followed by a Culture Reject tune, the man responsible for writing and recording said debut. Russ Walsh's (Sour Cat Records, First Winter, Cruel Bloom) entrance into fatherhood is marked on the show with some cuts from local artists he wrote about in this summer's Rrampt: Habit, Swamp Horlick and Third Development. Steve Ritchie's nephew Josh Ritchie gets in on the action with a track called '911' before Georgian Bay Roots tears the roof off the sucker with Parliament's 'Chocolate City' (yes, there's a local connection!). Summerfolk alumni Fred Eaglesmith chimes in with his song 'Wilder Than Her' and we catch up with local group The Ontarians. Collingwood's Swampy & the Note Troll capture the essence of this episode's theme with their aptly titled 'Connection'. House of Velvet and Drew McIvor round out the hour; never a dull moment on Georgian Bay Roots!

I was fortunate enough to sit down and talk with Scott Nolan. I’m a big fan of his and it was so much fun to get to interview him. Scott’s an accomplished singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Winnipeg, Canada. He has a very rare and unique sound that I absolutely love and I hope you will too. Scott has worked with artists such as Adam Carroll, Mary Gauthier, Hayes Carll, and Fred Eaglesmith among others. Not only is Scott an amazing singer-songwriter, he’s also an astounding poet and collage artist. He has a book of poetry entitled The Moon Was a Feather and he posts his collage art regularly on his Facebook and Instagram. Scott’s a very interesting guy and I can’t wait to see what he’s gonna do next. As always email me at jack@jackbarksdale.com for questions or show ideas.

I had to talk about Fred Eaglesmith and the characters he brings to us in his songs. The coming of age of a hopeless trucker, a home ridden women who wants a new screen door and more.
Behind the music, songwriting, and willing to fail with Canadian songwriter Donovan Woods. Born and raised in Canada, Donovan was pretty hip to the folk and bluegrass scene. Sighting Emmylou Harris, Fred Eaglesmith, and even east coast rap as inspirations. He knew songwriting was going to be his thing. So with the advice of his sister to pick up girls, he would need to learn the guitar. Years of honing the songwriting craft and uploading music to Myspace, Donovan was noticed by an indie movies' producers and actors to use his song for the film. Then sometime in the mix, another song was picked up for a national ad. From there it has taken time and dedication to the craft and his music. Woods is known in his songwriting to talk about the feelings that nobody really wants to talk about or even the feelings we don't even notice. Since flying to Nashville for songwriting sessions, he soon had Tim McGraw cutting "Portland, Maine", Charles Kelley "Leaving Nashville", Billy Currington "Sweet Love", Charlie Worsham "The Beginning of Things", just to name a few. Woods is also one to not shy away from hot topics and even stating country music was never a genre to follow the status quo. Donovan is on tour and he has a new record out. Be sure to go to for tour dates and stream Both Ways on your favorite music platform. Then give him a follow @donovanwoods.

Episode 20! I have some old friends of the show, Dave Charters, Mike Bouw and Mike Ostapchuk come by to talk about how far the Dutch Hall has come in 20 weeks. We also breakdown the Fred Eaglesmith episode, talk about music and tell you where the show is headed.
Pete welcomes one of Canada's great renaissance men, Fred Eaglesmith to the Dutch Hall for a lesson on how to make it in Rock and Roll the Eaglesmith way. Fred has been making music for over four decades and has just recently released his 20th studio album, Tambourine. His songs have been covered by Toby Kieth, Miranda Lambert and Alan Jackson. His Travelling Steam Show is aggressively making its way across North America. In addition to talking about Fred's storied career, they talk about merits of the education system, the evolution of the music business and whether there is any value to integrity anymore. And Fred performs 2 songs live, unplugged at the Dutch Hall!
Today a chat with one of the greats, and one we’re excited to be welcoming back to town this week, Mary Gauthier. She’s headed in to reunite with her frequent backing band, Scott Nolan & Joanna Miller, as well as working on a book and awaiting the release of a new album. Lots to talk about. And following up on last week’s chat with Jaxon Haldane about The Willie P Bennett Legacy Project, we present our annual tribute to the late, great Willie P Bennett, who left this world on Feb. 15, 2008. I didn’t even know the guy, but I miss him terribly. There’s never a bad time to listen to a lot of his brilliant songs, but the anniversary of his death reminds me that I’ll do my best to never let the music be forgotten, and thankfully, folks like Jaxon are taking the cause to a whole new level.
