A growing number of start-ups are offering farmers compensation for the generation of agricultural carbon credits. Large corporations purchase credits in pursuit of reducing their environmental footprints. The Growing Climate Solutions Act of 2021 cleared the US Senate June 24th making way for the development of a voluntary market in agricultural credits derived from prevention, reduction, or mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG). While the Act creates a voluntary certification program managed by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), there is still much unknown about the feasibility of developing new ecosystem services markets for farmers. In this edition of the Levi Lyle Podcast, guest Ruth McCabe, Conservation Agronomist with Heartland Cooperative, offers clarity and insight into the question, “Should farmers participate?”
Chairwoman of the Senate Agriculture Committee Debbie Stabenow joins OCP founder Heidi Heitkamp on the Hot Dish podcast to discuss the historic, bipartisan Growing Climate Solutions Act and how farmers can play a leading role in climate action. They discuss the impact of voluntary, climate-smart agriculture and Senator Stabenow gives a sneak peek at the upcoming Farm Bill.

The Growing Climate Solutions Act recently passed the Senate and, if enacted, would pave the way for farmers and ranchers to more easily participate in voluntary environmental credit markets, such as land or soil carbon sequestration. Some agricultural practices that can typically earn credits in these markets include cover crops and no-till and reduced tillage practices. Dr. Larry Van Tassell discusses how these three practices — planting cover crops, no-till and reduced tillage — have been used in Nebraska, and how well producers in the state may be positioned to enter carbon markets. Dr. Van Tassell is a professor and head of the Department of Agricultural Economics at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He also serves as director of UNL's Center for Agricultural Profitability. On June 24, the U.S. Senate adopted S. 1251, the Growing Climate Solutions Act of 2021. The bill seeks to make it easier for farmers and ranchers to participate in voluntary carbon credit markets, and to get a fair share of the carbon revenue they generate. Dave Aiken, a professor and water and agricultural law specialist in the Department of Agricultural Economics at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, discusses what's in the bill, what it could require of USDA and how it could impact farmers and ranchers.
From incentives for carbon markets to new conservation initiatives, the policies that will support dairy's Net Zero Initiative continue to take shape, says Paul Bleiberg, NMPF's Senior Vice President for Government Relations, in a Dairy Defined podcast released today. The Growing Climate Solutions Act, which passed the U.S. Senate by a 92-8 vote in June, “is very helpful to our overall efforts because environmental markets are a key tool in the toolbox of the Net Zero Initiative,” Bleiberg said. Meanwhile, an investment tax-credit bill for greenhouse-gas-reducing technologies “has started to make sore real headway,” he said. And conservation programs built around climate-friendly agricultural practices “may be able to encompass some of the work that we're doing and help us build on it.”
