In this segment, Sean and Jacquie are joined by Technologist and editor of TechForThePeople.org Chris Garaffa to discuss how the hack that took down Colonial Pipeline was traced back to a single compromised password, the negligence of companies in password encryption that makes them vulnerable to these types of breaches, how Amazon's doorbell camera Ring does not make neighborhoods safer despite their inflated claims, and how it is possible to get safety laws passed without the use of privacy-compromising cameras.
The Colonial Pipeline has was pulled off from one breached password. This episode talks about what happened and the steps that could have been in place to prevent this. Be aware, be safe. The Colonial Pipeline hack, subsequent payment of cyber-ransom and government "response" has exposed the nation's power infrastructure's vulnerabilities to cyber attacks. The recent Colonial Pipeline attack was yet another example of the escalating threats in cyberspace as many Americans experienced long lines at gas stations amid fears of shortages after a ransomware attack. This incident just comes months after the likely Russian government-sponsored SolarWinds hack that compromised thousands of government and company platforms. Meanwhile, the Facebook Oversight Board recently upheld its ban on former President Donald Trump. With all these disruptions in the digital realm, the line between what is acceptable and unacceptable behavior online—and who should manage cyberspace—has never been blurrier. Companies are exercising their private authorities, paying off ransoms and managing challenging content moderation decisions. Have governments ceded too much ground to the private sector, and is there a way to build a more organized structure to make these groundbreaking decisions in cyberspace?Jon Bateman, a fellow at Carnegie's Cyber Policy Initiative, joins Laura to tackle the growing governance challenges in the technology sector.

Beyond the chatter and circus of Washington, there are real threats out there, America. The Colonial Pipeline Hack was just a sliver of the digital damage our enemies can and will inflict on our infrastructure, grid, and citizenry. And one of those threats remains an EMP (electromagnetic pulse) attack. If China or Russia unleashed this weapon on us at full force, it would take down our grid, transit, industries, Wall Street: any and everything that relies on electricity. And draped in darkness, our country would crumble -- we cannot allow that to happen. Dr. Peter Pry, Executive Director of the EMP Task Force, details the science behind what an EMP attack consists of and how much damage it’s capable of wreaking. The two also discuss how bureaucracy often trumps expertise in government, realizing Reagan’s vision for our Space Force, and the inevitable digital war with Russia.

Brad runs Bannon Communications Research, a polling, message development and media firm which helps labor unions, progressive issue groups and Democratic candidates win public affairs and political campaigns. His show, 'Deadline D.C. with Brad Bannon,' airs every Monday from 3-4pm ET. Brad is first joined by Rocio Zamora, a Policy Advocate with the Youth Justice Coalition (YJC), which works to build an abolitionist, youth-led movement to end police terror, mass incarceration and criminalization of youth of color. Rocio is also a member of the 'STOP Police Terror Coalition of California,' which is a statewide Coalition of impacted family members whose loved ones were killed by law enforcement. Brad and Rocio discuss re-imagining public safety by reforming the police forces of California and the entire United States. There are two specific bills that Rocio and her organizations are working to help get passed in California, which could become models for the entire country. Those two bills are California's 'SB-2' and 'AB-118.' SB-2 would create a decertification process for rogue officers and is intended to give victims of police violence a better shot in civil court. AB-118, also known as the CRISES Act, would fund emergency response programs that are not handled by police. The website for the Youth Justice Coalition (YJC) is youthjusticela.org and their Twitter handle is @YouthJusticeLA. During the second half of the show, Brad is joined by Colonel Cedric Leighton, Founder and President of Cedric Leighton Associates, a strategic risk and leadership consultancy serving global companies and organizations. He founded the company in 2010, after serving in the US Air Force for 26 years as an Intelligence Officer and attaining the rank of Colonel. Brad and Colonel Leighton analyze what is causing the current conflict in the Gaza strip between the Israelis and the Palestinians, as well as what role the U.S. is playing in trying to broker a peace deal between the two sides. We've all heard about the Colonial pipeline hack, one that cost the company $5 million dollars. How did it happen? And more importantly, how can you as a business owner protect yourself and your company? We'll be discussing this and more with industry experts Brittany Fugate and David Warner from Cenetric. Here's the reality - 300,000 new malware programs are created every day, and because they often do not employ traditional virus coding, your anti-virus program likely will not protect you. A new hack occurs every 39 seconds. Hackers infiltrate a company's systems in as little as 18 minutes. No business or individual is safe unless they employ the proper safeguards, but the good news is that there are things you can do to prevent your company from falling victim to this pervasive threat. A must listen! Cenetric is an IT/ Network Services company based in Kansas City and serving clients ranging from Law Firms to Universities to Fortune 500 Companies located in the mid-west.
