The Whole Milk for Healthy Kids Act has a 60 percent chance of becoming law this year, with congressional momentum building along with consensus that whole milk in schools is the best option for schoolkids, Sen. Peter Welch, D-VT, said in a Dairy Defined podcast released today.“This is one of those things where, if we get it on the floor, and get the cooperation of leadership, we get the votes,” he said. “This is one of those areas of rare bipartisanship that we have right now.”Welch, the ranking member of the Senate Agriculture Committee's rural development subcommittee, is a Senate co-sponsor of Whole Milk for Healthy Kids, which passed the House of Representatives in 2023 and this year is advancing in both chambers. The legislation would restore the ability of schools to offer whole and 2% milk as options.Welch also serves on the Judiciary, Finance and Rules committees, touching on agricultural issues including immigration and trade.

The Political mess in the United States House of Representatives is nothing new. But there are definitely a few more wrinkles. Trump and Musk. The latest dust-up began early in the week when the Speaker shared the latest Budget Compromise with Democrats and Republicans.  And the world's richest man, who can't find shirts to fit, didn't like what he saw. So he began Tweeting. Hours later, I mean many hours, the president-elect weighed in. He didn't like it either. So a man who is not the president until Jan. 20, 2025 and another rich dude who paid to help get Trump elected, but want not born here and can never be President, blew up the budget deal.  Here is an important point: The "Four Corners" worked on the final documents and it was a compromise plan. COMPROMISE. That means not everybody got what they wanted, but they worked it out, and this was the agreement. Let me take a minute to explain the "Four Corners". These are lawmakers who are experts in their committee assignments. Two Democrats and two Republicans from the House and Senate. For example, one of the key budget items was the Farm Bill. And the need for farmers to get some fiscal help from the Government. It appeared a one-time aid package had been agreed upon by the lawmakers who make up the "four corners" in farm bill talks. Those lawmakers are Rep. Glenn "GT" Thompson, R-Pa., chairman of the House Agriculture Committee; Sen. John Boozman, R-Ark., ranking member of the Senate Agriculture Committee; Rep. David Scott, D-Ga., ranking member of the House Agriculture Committee; and Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., chairwoman of the Senate Agriculture Committee.  More on this story on gloriamoraga.com. **The Shadow of Sam Bankman-Fried: How Crypto's Lawlessness Influenced Washington**Sam Bankman-Fried, the former CEO of FTX, has left an indelible mark on the cryptocurrency world and the halls of Congress. His 25-year prison sentence for stealing $8 billion from FTX customers serves as a stark reminder of the crypto industry's vulnerabilities and the need for robust regulation.Bankman-Fried's influence extended far beyond his company's collapse. He spent "hundreds, probably thousands of hours" in Washington, D.C., lobbying regulators and lawmakers. His efforts included contributing tens of thousands of dollars to election campaigns, particularly those of the Senate Agriculture Committee members who were considering the Digital Commodities Consumer Protection Act (DCCPA).The DCCPA, which aims to give the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) greater control over crypto markets, has been a focal point in the regulatory debate. However, critics argue that the bill lacks teeth in protecting customers from shady practices and that the CFTC might be the wrong agency to police it. Advocacy groups like Better Markets have raised concerns about the CFTC's ability to regulate the crypto market effectively, given its smaller size and perceived light-touch approach.CFTC Chairman Rostin Behnam has been under scrutiny for his interactions with Bankman-Fried. Senators Elizabeth Warren and Chuck Grassley have requested an accounting of all meetings and correspondence between Behnam and Bankman-Fried, highlighting the need for transparency in regulatory interactions. The collapse of FTX has led to a series of congressional hearings and investigations. The CFTC has launched a significant enforcement action, obtaining a $12.7 billion judgment against FTX and Alameda Research, with $8.7 billion in restitution and $4 billion in disgorgement. These actions underscore the regulatory challenges posed by the crypto industry and the need for comprehensive market regulation. In summary, Sam Bankman-Fried's influence on Washington has been multifaceted and far-reaching. His actions have highlighted the need for stronger regulations in the crypto industry, and ongoing investigations aim to hold him and his associates accountable for their egregious crimes. The legacy of FTX serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of unregulated markets and the importance of robust oversight.

The organization's mission is to educate and empower mothers and others with actions and solutions to create healthy communities. Zen Honeycutt and Moms Across America initiated the first glyphosate testing in America and successfully petitioned Costco to remove Roundup from their shelves. She is the author of UNSTOPPABLE, Transforming Sickness and Struggle into Triumph, Empowerment, and Celebration of Community, the director of a short film called “Communities Rising” and the co-founder of the recently launched program called “The Neighborhood Food Network” whose mission is to create a parallel food system, one street at a time.Extensive Testing on 21 of the Nation's Most Popular Fast Food Brands Reveals Alarming Levels of Toxins and Limited Nutritional Value (Fast food brands are also suppliers for school lunches) Out of growing concern for skyrocketing levels of chronic illness, mental health issues, violence, behavior and learning disorders, and autism in American children, Moms Across America, a national educational nonprofit, has initiated a Fast Food Testing Program to test for potential toxins in one of our nation's most iconic, go-to nutritional sources- the fast food restaurant. Fast food is consumed by eight-five million Americans each day. Furthermore, many chains are suppliers of school lunches, thirty million of which are served daily to children. For millions of under privileged children, these meals are their only access to a full meal. To further investigate the status of a major source of food and nutrition for children as well as adults in America, Moms Across America commissioned extensive testing on 21 of the country's most popular fast food brands (The 21 brands include the top 20 highest grossing brands as rated by the QSR50, in addition to In-N-Out Burger, which is ranked #33). In all, forty-two samples of fast food meals gathered from 21 locations nationwide were tested by the Health Research Institute. All 21 brands were tested for the most widely used herbicide in the world, glyphosate, 203 agrochemicals, 160 heavy metals, PFAS, phthalates, and mineral content. The top ten brands were additionally tested for 106 commonly used veterinary drugs and hormones, Vitamin B's and calories. Two types of samples- three to four meals of each type- from each of 21 locations across the United States were shipped to the Health Research Institute in their original packaging, untouched and frozen. At the invitation of the Senate Agriculture Committee, results of the Fast Food Testing Program were shared at a congressional briefing on food toxicity in school lunches this October 17 in Washington, DC.Moms Across America (MAA) is a 501c3 nonprofit organization whose mission is to educate and empower mothers and others with actions and solutions to create healthy communities. Their motto is “Empowered Moms, Healthy Kids”. The national coalition of mothers is dedicated to ensuring that the food we eat and feed our families is safe and healthy, with an emphasis on eliminating GMOs and glyphosate, the key ingredient in Roundup herbicide, from our food supply. A powerhouse activist organization, MAA reaches as many as more than four million followers on social media each month and millions in person with local events across the country. Among its many successes, the group is responsible for having initiated the first-ever glyphosate testing in tap water, urine, and breast milk in 2013. Season 5, episode 7. The United Nations Security Council tends to capture the headlines, but throughout the United Nations system are dozens of organizations and agencies that make a substantial difference in our everyday lives. From standardizing rules around flight to providing data that shape global policy, these institutions are often the unsung heroes of the UN. Given ISD's work on food security, we wanted to highlight the work of one such organization - The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO). So, for this episode, we chatted with Deputy Director General of the FAO Beth Bechdol. Beth talked about the role the FAO plays in collecting crucial data and providing programmatic expertise, how innovation and partnerships enhance their work, and how Russia's invasion of Ukraine affects their efforts to end hunger.   Beth is responsible for FAO's partnership and outreach work, including UN collaboration, resource mobilization, private sector engagement, and South-South and triangular cooperation. She oversees plant production and protection programs, FAO's technical advisory committee on agriculture and the International Plant Protection Convention Secretariat. Before joining FAO, Beth was President and CEO of AgriNovus Indiana. Prior to this, she served as a Chief of Staff at the U.S. Department of Agriculture and as an Economist on the Senate Agriculture Committee.   For more on global food security and policy recommendations to enhance it, check out ISD's working group and related publications and research on the topic here. In 2020, Cowen Digital formed to allow institutional customers of the investment bank Cowen to trade digital assets. The digital arm has been growing steadily in its eight months of existence, despite the onset of crypto winter. In this episode of The Scoop, Cowen Digital managing director and head Drew Forman explains how the crypto industry can rebuild in the wake of FTX's meltdown, as well as what it will take to repair trust in the space among institutional investors. According to Forman, many of Cowen's institutional clients are “getting the pipes ready” to take part in crypto's next wave. But regulatory clarity is still needed before large, sophisticated institutions get involved. Forman explains: “I welcome a set of rules ahead of time that we all look to abide by — and hopefully that allows the big institutional investors with the trillion dollar balance sheets to start allocating to the space.” The SEC and DOJ are currently examining FTX's case, and the CFTC chair's is set to appear before the Senate Agriculture Committee on December 1 to testify on the exchange's collapse.
