In April 2025, President Guskiewicz launched the Council to champion bold initiatives that will amplify MSU's role as Michigan's state university and address the state's biggest challenges. Harnessing MSU's distinctive assets and the unparalleled expertise of its members while focusing on what matters most for Michigan, the Council guides initiatives designed to: Develop talent for in-demand jobs across the state and equip Spartans with the skills of the future. Connect Spartans to great companies and careers in Michigan. Leverage MSU's cutting-edge research and intellectual property to propel Michigan's economy. Co-chaired by university alumnus Matt Elliott and Eli Broad College of Business Dean Emeritus and Professor Sanjay Gupta, the council's partnership with MSU helps align education, research, and industry to current workforce needs, identification of future skills, and guidance toward initiatives that prepare Spartans for a rapidly evolving economy. The Council has designed three transformational initiatives that drive this work: AI-Ready Spartans: Builds digital competencies across the undergraduate experience by prioritizing AI through an industry-backed, employer-informed approach, ensuring every graduate can use AI effectively and responsibly. Career-Connected Spartans: Ensures every undergraduate gains access to career exploration and real-world experiences, building the skills, confidence, and clarity needed to launch successfully into the workforce. Spartan Catalyst: Accelerates collaboration between MSU researchers and industry to translate discovery into innovation and economic impact by tackling their most pressing challenges. Looking Ahead University leadership, in coordination with the Green and White Council, is currently working to integrate the initiatives across colleges and units at MSU. The university invites companies and industry leaders to partner on applied AI and digital competency curriculum, career exploration and experiential learning opportunities, and applied research collaborations. Employers play a pivotal role in preparing the future workforce, and MSU welcomes partners ready to build alongside and help power the innovation economy. More information and the opportunity to engage with the council's initiatives is available here. A $5 million seed gift from an Eli Broad College of Business alumnus will help launch the council's initiatives and advance the university's continued incorporation of artificial intelligence, experiential learning and applied research as part of the undergraduate experience at MSU. The council anticipates additional philanthropic investments to expand opportunities for students and partners nationwide.

Whitmer highlights pathways for student success during Career and Technical Education Month CTE offers high school and college students hands-on learning experiences that can be applied to real-world training and career pathways LANSING, Mich. — To shine a spotlight on the power of hands-on learning that prepares Michiganders for in-demand, good-paying careers, Gov. Whitmer joins the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO) and the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) in proclaiming February as Career and Technical Education Month. With nearly 500,000 job openings projected in Michigan each year through 2032, Career and Technical Education (CTE) offers high school and college students hands-on learning experiences that can be applied to real-world training and career pathways. Throughout the month of February, individuals of all ages, including students and those seeking new career opportunities, are encouraged to explore programs that prepare them for successful career entry, advancement and/or continuing education. “Career and Technical Education programs offer Michiganders tangible skills they can use to land good-paying, in-demand jobs in growing fields and trades like plumbing, welding, and more,” said Governor Whitmer. “I'm proud of the progress we've made through ongoing investments in Career and Technical Education and the Going PRO Talent fund, as well as our efforts to create 23,000 apprenticeships. But we're just getting started. This Career and Technical Education Month, let's keep working together to create opportunity, grow our economy, and help more people ‘make it' in Michigan.” Michigan also offers Early Middle Colleges (EMCs), an MDE approved five-year program of study, who work closely with post-secondary partners to provide students with an opportunity to earn a high school diploma and one or more of the following: 60 transferable college credits, an associate degree, a professional certification, the Michigan Early Middle College Association technical certificate and/or participation in a Registered Apprenticeship. “With CTE programs, Michigan schools put students first by preparing them for high-wage and high-skills careers or postsecondary education,” said State Superintendent Dr. Glenn Maleyko. “During the last three years, the number of CTE completers has increased by almost 10,800 students, or 24%, to more than 55,000 students, the highest number in Michigan history. CTE contributes to several goals in Michigan's Top 10 Strategic Education Plan – including expanding secondary learning opportunities for all students, increasing the percentage of all students who graduate from high school and increasing the percentage of adults with a postsecondary credential.”

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Martin Commercial Properties has released its 2025 H1 Market Insights Report for the Greater Lansing Area, offering an in-depth analysis of commercial real estate conditions across the industrial, office, and retail sectors. The report points to increasing market stability and positive momentum, even as many industries continue to navigate broader economic uncertainty. MBN: MCP Van Martin “While the economic landscape remains mixed, commercial real estate in Greater Lansing is demonstrating resilience and steady forward progress,” said Van W. Martin, CCIM, SIOR, CRE, President and CEO of Martin Commercial Properties (left). “Across all three sectors, we're seeing fundamentals that suggest the market is adjusting thoughtfully rather than pulling back.” According to the report, the industrial sector continues to be supported by historically high rental rates, limited availability of modern facilities, and sustained investment tied to manufacturing, logistics, and energy-related users. Demand for well-located, functional industrial space remains strong, underscoring the region's competitiveness and long-term growth potential. The office market is showing early signs of stabilization as obsolete inventory is removed, sublease space declines, and tenants increasingly prioritize high-quality, well-located buildings. While challenges remain, particularly in older properties, leasing activity and owner-occupier interest are helping rebalance the market. Retail performance remains strongest in established corridors, where consistent leasing activity, redevelopment of formerly vacant spaces, and targeted new construction continue to reinforce neighborhood and necessity-based retail demand. Prime locations are outperforming the broader market, reflecting disciplined expansion by retailers and continued consumer engagement. MBN: MCP GL “Greater Lansing's commercial real estate market is evolving in a measured and responsible way,” Martin added. “The data shows continued confidence in quality assets, strategic reinvestment, and a foundation that supports long-term economic health across the region.” About Martin Commercial Properties: Martin Commercial Properties is one of Michigan's leading independent commercial real estate firms, with a legacy spanning over 60 years. (January 16, 2026). The Battle Creek Battle Jacks today announced a new official tagline that will guide the organization into its next chapter, while also previewing plans for a Southwest Michigan alternate identity to be introduced during the 2026 season. As the Battle Jacks prepare to enter its fifth season since the rebrand from the “Bombers”, the announcement reflects a moment of reflection, pride, and purpose for the organization and the community it serves. Beginning in 2026, the Battle Jacks will officially carry the tagline: Battle Creek Battle Jacks. Home of Southwest Michigan Baseball. The new identity represents more than a branding update. It signals a renewed commitment to Battle Creek, recognition of the city's deep baseball roots, and a long-term vision that positions the ballpark as the gathering place for baseball fans across the entire Southwest Michigan region. “This moment is about clarity,” said Owner and President Scott Miles. “Southwest Michigan is -*the region we serve. Battle Creek is the home that defines it. Our ballpark stands on some of the most historic baseball grounds in the Midwest. Hall of Famers played here in their early years. Generations of families have come through this park. Past teams wore Southwest Michigan across their chests because Battle Creek had earned that identity.” A Home Built on History Baseball in Battle Creek did not begin with the Battle Jacks. For decades, Bailey Park and historic C.O. Brown Stadium in Battle Creek have stood among the Midwest's most important amateur baseball venues. Long before the Battle Jacks took the field, the park hosted professional baseball, championship teams, and a who's who of Michigan baseball royalty. From future Hall of Famers like Derek Jeter and John Smoltz in the earliest stages of their careers to countless unforgettable summer nights, the ballpark helped shape the baseball culture of Michigan. Families traveled from communities across Southwest Michigan to watch the game played here. Players grew up dreaming of stepping onto this field. Teams proudly represented not just a city, but an entire region. Calling Battle Creek the Home of Southwest Michigan Baseball is not a marketing slogan. It is recognition of what has already been true for generations. “This ballpark is sacred ground,” Miles said. “When you walk into Bailey Park, you feel the history. Our responsibility is to protect that legacy while building something that honors it and carries it forward.” A Natural Evolution in Year Five When the Battle Jacks rebranded in 2021, the team's original tagline, Fans Best Friend, captured the warmth, accessibility, and family-first spirit that defined the franchise's early years. That identity will continue to serve a meaningful purpose within the organization. “That foundation mattered,” said General Manager Sam Connell. “As a young organization, that identity helped us build trust and connection. It reflected who we were at that moment.” Now entering the fifth season, the organization has grown, expectations have grown, and the role the team plays in the community and across the region has grown as well.

Chris Holman welcomes John Sellek, Spokesperson, Michigan Smart Trade Alliance, Lansing, MI. Where do Michiganders stand on trade and tariffs? I understand many polls have been done, including one by your new organization, Michigan Smart Trade Alliance. Among the MISTA's first initiatives is a study of consumer sentiment in Michigan on key trade-related topics, including tariffs and their effects on family and business budgets. MISTA recently commissioned a statewide poll of 600 registered Michigan voters focused on U.S. trade policy and tariffs, conducted by a respected, bipartisan team of national pollsters from UpONE Insights (R) and Impact Research (D). Our poll confirmed that Michiganders across party lines are struggling with affordability issues and, understandably, are not wild about policies that can cause higher prices. They know we must reduce our reliance on foreign suppliers through smart trade deals, but in ways that reduce the pressures of everyday costs, support Michigan's diverse economy, and protect critical trading relationships, like the one our auto industry has with Canada. We know that tariffs hurt Michigan businesses, Michigan consumers and Michigan farmers at a time when the economy is struggling, we need leaders in both parties to work together to forge trade policies that help Michigan's economy and bolster our relationships with our trade partners like Canada. The Michigan Smart Trade Alliance (MISTA), launched in December. John, tell us about this new non-partisan statewide public policy organization. MISTA's mission is to encourage thoughtful discussion about trade policy, including tariffs, that affect the entirety of our great state's economy. We are seeking a nonpartisan discussion on the need for consistent trade policy that creates Michigan jobs, lowers costs for businesses & families, and protects our trading relationship with Canada. What is the Michigan Smart Trade Alliance focusing on? We will focus on growing our coalition by providing opportunities where both trade and tariff education and discussion can take place. Do Michigan voters understand tariff and trade issues? More than 80% have heard about U.S. tariff policy discussions, across the political spectrum. The honor is part of the Manufacturing Excellence Awards, presented annually by the Michigan Manufacturers Association (MMA). MMA will reveal and honor the winners of the 2025 Manufacturing Excellence Awards during a celebration on Thursday, Nov. 20, 2025, in Lansing. VERAX ERP was selected as a finalist for the 2025 Innovation Excellence Award due to its dedication and expertise in the industry. VERAX ERP is one of the very few pure-play software products wholly produced in the State of Michigan that services the complex needs of manufacturing companies statewide. The Manufacturing Excellence Awards is the annual statewide celebration of the exceptional contributions that Michigan manufacturers make to their workforce, their communities, the economy and the industry. The program promotes the inspiring stories of Michigan's manufacturing industry, the thousands of unique manufacturing companies across the state, the hundreds of thousands of Michiganders employed in the industry and the local communities that support it. Starting out of a garage in Warren, Michigan in 1969, TARUS manufactures a variety of machine tools for heavy industry, including large volume, high-precision 5-axis CNC machines, gundrill and deephole drilling machines for nuclear power, coordinate measuring machines, and was the inventor of the Claymill. The Claymill revolutionized car and transportation design worldwide and TARUS remains the preeminent global leader. Key to TARUS' success since its founding is its belief in total vertical integration. In the late 1970s, this philosophy meant TARUS created its own CNC control for the machines it built. It laid the foundation of software development dating back almost 50 years. For more than 120 years, MMA has served as a unifying champion of an industry that is in constant evolution and growth. They represent the most diverse manufacturing center in perhaps the entire world and, just as they have since the industrial revolution, Michigan will continue to be the cradle of innovation and invention for generations to come. MMA's sole purpose is to advocate for, support, train and grow the manufacturing industry in Michigan. Learn more about MMA and the 2025 Manufacturing Excellence Awards at mimfg.org/excellence.

Hardy explained that the Commission was created to ensure Dr. King's legacy remained active and meaningful beyond his lifetime. Its efforts include partnerships with schools, faith groups, civic leaders, and community organizations, as well as scholarship and student essay programs that invest directly in the next generation of leaders. A centerpiece of the Commission's work is the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Celebration, recognized as the nation's largest MLK Day luncheon. The 2026 event, taking place January 19 at the Lansing Center, marks the 41st year of the celebration and coincides with the 40th anniversary of the first federally observed MLK holiday. Drawing more than 1,600 attendees each year, the event blends inspiration, music, reflection, and a clear call to action. Hardy emphasized that the goal is not only inspiration, but responsibility. Chris Holman welcomes back Lindsey M. Mead, Associate, Foster Swift Collins & Smith PC Attorneys Lansing with 5 offices across Michigan. (1) What is the WBENC WBE certification? There are a lot of acronyms here, but WBENC stands for the Women's Business Enterprise National Council. WBENC offers a women's business enterprise or WBE certification. Through the WBENC, WBE-certified businesses are offered the opportunity to work with diverse suppliers and purchasing executives with hundreds of United States corporations that accept WBENC certification. The WBENC connects certified women businessowners to their community through networking events and mentoring programs, as well. The WBENC encourages all certified women-owned businesses to utilize their authorized logo and seal after receiving WBE certification so these businesses can showcase its commitment to women ownership and leadership in an easily identifiable way. (2) What is a WOSB or EDWOSB certification? The United States Small Business Administration has created two contracting programs – the women-owned small business or WOSB program and the economically disadvantaged WOSB program or EDWOSB program. To participate in either, you must qualify as a small business under the SBA's size requirements and receive a WOSB or EDWOSB certification from the SBA. The intention when creating these programs was to level the playing field for women business owners in predominately male-dominated industries. The SBA limits competition for certain federal government contracts to certified WOSBs or EDWOSBs only. However, the SBA maintains a list of eligible trades and industries that can qualify for either program – they are not available certifications to all women-owned businesses. (3) What are the typical eligibility criteria you see for these types of federal certifications? Though the eligibility criteria differs through each individualized program, these certifications are looking for evidence that your business is at least 51% owned, controlled, operated, and managed by a woman or multiple women. To prevent situations where a company obtains WBENC or SBA certification simply by assigning ownership shares to a woman while not allowing her to actively lead or manage the business, both organizations require documentation proving that the woman owner – or multiple women owners – are directly in control of the daily operations of the business and have invested capital in the business. (4) What types of documents could interested women-owned businesses begin to compile if they were interested in obtaining either WBENC or SBA certifications? Again, the specific document lists vary depending on the actual certification you are interested in, though the WBENC and SBA have quite a bit of overlap in their requests. Examples of the documents you may be requested to provide to complete a certification application through either WBENC or SBA include evidence of the history of your business; documentation or professional business licenses; evidence of ownership and management details related to the business; proof of U.S. citizenship for the women owners; financial statements and related data; personnel information; and business structure and governance data, such as a business' state-specific organizing documents. (5) How can Foster Swift help me and my business apply for these types of certifications? Through either the WBENC or SBA, both organizations permit applicants of their certification programs to delegate attorneys to assist with compiling the necessary information for their certification applications and submitted that application on their behalf. » Visit MBN website: www.michiganbusinessnetwork.com/ » Subscribe to MBN's YouTube: www.youtube.com/@MichiganbusinessnetworkMBN » Like MBN: www.facebook.com/mibiznetwork » Follow MBN: twitter.com/MIBizNetwork/ » MBN Instagram: www.instagram.com/mibiznetwork/
